Former St. John’s University Basketball Head Coach Files Lawsuit for $45.6M

After being terminated from his coaching contract, former St. John’s University men’s basketball coach Mike Anderson wants $45.6 million from the institution.

According to ESPN, Anderson said he was fired so the university could avoid paying out his contract and use that money to hire the new head coach, Rick Pitino, who won NCAA men’s championships at Kentucky and Louisville, which ended in a bribery scandal involving Adidas

The $45.6 million includes the remaining $11.4 million left on his contract and $34.2 million for “punitive” damages. Anderson was fired March 10. St. John’s hired Pitino, who coached the NBA’s New York Knicks in the late 1980s, shortly after on March 20.

Anderson claims the school was already in talks with Pitino when the school terminated his contract.

In addition to obtaining arbitration documents, ESPN also obtained Anderson’s termination notice. It states he was let go for “failure to create and support an environment that strongly encourages student-athletes who are in the men’s basketball program to meet all university academic requirements.”

There were also statements attributed to Anderson underperforming in his “duties and responsibilities” that reflected positively on St. John’s University. Furthermore, he was accused of actions that discredited the school and didn’t “appropriately supervise” and communicate with his assistant coaches.

Anderson vehemently denies these claims, calling them “fictitious” problems and that he was fired without just cause.

St. John’s responded and challenged “the wildly inaccurate claims” and said it would “vigorously defend those claims in arbitration.”

Anderson’s record as the head coach of the men’s basketball team was 68-56, with a 30-46 record in the Big East in his four seasons at St. John’s.

Fox News reported that Anderson had been given a six-year extension in February 2021. St. John’s hired Pitino shortly after his team, the Iona Gaels, was eliminated from the NCAA tournament by the eventual national champion, The University of Connecticut (UConn) Huskies.

Swarm or Nah: Beyoncé Fan Arrested During Opening Night Of ‘Renaissance’ World Tour

One thing’s for sure, the BeyHive does not play about their Queen. And one fan has learned that neither does the superstar’s security team.

Beyoncé officially kicked off her Renaissance World Tour in Stockholm, Sweden, earlier this week, and fans worldwide were gagged to see the greatest living entertainer do what she does best: SLAY! For nearly three hours, her dedicated and loyal fans were treated to a tour de force; that started with some of her most popular ballads and ran through the entire tracklist of her latest Grammy-nominated offering, “Renaissance.”

Slated to be her highest-grossing tour yet, and projected to bring in over $2 billion in revenue, the RWT already has her fans buzzing.

Including one who may have flown a little too close to the sun. According to HotNewHipHop, a fan was arrested at the Stockholm show after they snuck into the exclusive “Club Renaissance” area. This VIP experience is roped off and includes a concierge team and hosts; to ensure a five-star Beyoncé experience for those willing to cough up the nearly $2,000 asking price.

Many wondered how locked down each section would be and if there would be any wiggle room to move between them. That question was answered as the trespassing fan was seen being escorted out of the arena alongside Beyonce’s longtime publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure.

After two sold-out shows in Sweden, Beyoncé continues the European leg of her tour with stops in Paris, Barcelona, London, Amsterdam, and more. The Queen will return to the States in July, with her first North American stop in Philadelphia on July 12. We all await what other surprises the icon has in store.

NSFW: Janelle Monae Bares It All In ‘Lipstick Lover’ Visuals, Announces New Album

Janelle Monae, who rose to fame donned in various menswear fashions, has ditched the suits and doesn’t seem to be looking back.

Monae released the visuals for her new single “Lipstick Lover” and subsequently sent the internet into hysterics. The track, which will appear on her album The Age of Pleasure, isn’t a departure from her signature sound but rather a current nod to it. However, the video shows all sides of the artist in a way we’ve never seen before.

In a teaser for the visuals, Monae is seen rising out of a pool in a see-through t-shirt that reveals her breasts before the camera leaves to follow the scantily-clad glory of her femme-presenting co-stars. Something that the “Primetime” singer says we should expect to see more of. “Titties out for the next 15 years. [smiling with tongue out emoji],” she posted on Twitter ahead of the release of the video.

The response to the singer’s nudity era has been overwhelming, with fans giving lusty praise for the singer’s incredible physique.

For those who may be late to the party, Monae, who is pansexual, has spent recent years freely expressing all aspects of her sexual identity. In her “emotion picture” for her last musical offering, 2018’s Dirty Computer, she expressed her love for all humankind—and androids alike. “Being a queer Black woman in America — someone who has been in relationships with both men and women — I consider myself to be a free-ass motherf*cker,” she said in an interview with Rolling Stone.

We love seeing a liberated, otherwordly talented, body-positive Black woman.

Black Mothers in the US Speak of Challenges and Resilience During Pregnancy and Postpartum

Black Mothers in the US Speak of Challenges and Resilience During Pregnancy and Postpartum

Ciara Clark, a Black doula, labored for more than nine hours at home before making a last-minute switch to go to the hospital to give birth.

With her own Black doula and mother by her side, Clark had hoped to have her baby at home with no medical assistance at all. She wanted to have a “wild” pregnancy – one that is medically unassisted.

“I wanted to go through this birth without having any medical intervention,” said Clark, 34.

After four cesarean sections with her previous pregnancies, Clark said she feared that her birth plan would not be supported by the medical staff. But after a long labor, Clark said she became anxious and decided to go to the hospital, where she gave birth to a healthy son.

Clark is not alone in her distrust of medical intervention in the birthing process. Nine Black pregnant women and new mothers Reuters spoke to for this story voiced similar comments. All of the women spoke of feeling unseen and unheard at times through their pregnancy and postpartum period.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) April data shows that Black women in the United States are three times more likely to die of pregnancy-related causes than white women. The CDC said this was a result of multiple factors, including variation in the quality of healthcare, underlying chronic conditions, structural racism, and implicit bias.

For Chelsea Ward, 32, a nursing student from Fords, New Jersey, who recently gave birth to twins, the state of Black maternal health in the United States is “inadequate.”

“It’s challenging when you’re fighting and advocating for your maternal health rights, and having to educate your peers as well,” Ward said.

Obtaining knowledge and self-advocating is key to making informed decisions, Ward added.

RESILIENCE AND JOY

Despite their challenges, the women described their resilience as they navigate maternal healthcare and motherhood.

Soyal Smalls, 37, from Poughkeepsie, New York, who was pregnant when Reuters photographed her in August 2022, believes increasing the number of Black healthcare providers would help Black mothers, along with having more hospitals with birthing units to support the mother and allow for more vaginal births.

Ashlee Muhammad, 37, agreed, saying her doctors had assumed she would have a cesarean and she had to advocate for herself to have a vaginal birth for her twins.

Many of the women also emphasized the importance of postpartum care.

“If we are not whole as mothers, I don’t know how anyone expects us to care for these children,” Clark said.

Ward said she thought more education for the Black community on innovations in birthing, postpartum care, and parenting would be beneficial. “I truly believe that if we know better, we would do better,” she said.

Shariah Bottex, a 30-year-old program manager in Flushing, New York, pumped milk while her fiance fed their newborn son when Reuters photographed her in March. She said her biggest hope for her children is that they will feel comfortable in their skin and that they get to enjoy their childhood.

“My greatest joy as a mother is seeing my baby smile so big and knowing that I’m the cause of that smile and his happiness,” Bottex said.

Florida Takes Anti-Woke Movement To Another Level By Removing BLM Movement and George Floyd From Textbooks

Florida Takes Anti-Woke Movement To Another Level By Removing BLM Movement and George Floyd From Textbooks

The Black Lives Matter movement has no place in Florida.

WPTV reports students will receive new textbooks with some very noticeable edits—the removal of BLM and content containing George Floyd’s case. Apparently, this is a process the state conducts routinely every few years; however, Florida’s new “Stop WOKE Act” brings on more controversy.

The lessons being removed on the movement and the rallies seen across the country have civil rights leaders up in arms. Robert Mitchell, founder of Muck City Black Lives Matter, calls the move an “attempt to hide the truth.” “It makes common sense in your textbooks that you would be told, hey, there was a movement called Black Lives Matter,” Mitchell said. “The reason why, there was young men and women being slain and killed unjustifiably.”

Education leaders like Hillsborough School Board member Jessica Vaughn feel the move is scary. “There’s so many emotions, but I guess immediately it’s fear,” Vaughn told the Tampa Bay Times. “I’m afraid of the pattern of erasing or trying to rewrite history because to me this is right out of the playbook of fascism.”

Several rejected textbook passages were shared by Florida Department of Education officials. One passage, headlined “New Calls for Social Justice” in a middle school textbook, discussed the start of the movement in 2013 and the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police in 2020. According to the education department, the passage was an “unsolicited topic,” as told by WPTV.

Even a mention of people kneeling during the national anthem was struck from an elementary school textbook.

Under Gov. Ron DeSantis, new laws have been restrictive of what his press secretary calls “political indoctrination.” “The political indoctrination of children through the K-12 public education system is a very real and prolific problem in this country,” Bryan Griffin tweeted.

He continued, saying the problematic passages were “All CAUGHT & all FIXED under @GovRonDeSantis’ watch.”

Ohio Senate Passes Bill That Lowers Minimum Age To Hire Police Officers To 18

Ohio Senate Passes Bill That Lowers Minimum Age To Hire Police Officers To 18

Ohio legislators are making moves to put younger police officers on the streets.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports a new bill was passed to lower the minimum hiring age for police officers. Senate Bill 53 passed on May 10, allowing local departments to hire candidates at least 18 years old—a huge drop from the current age requirement of 21.

With a vote of 25-8, bill supporters like Sen. Kristina Roegner (R-OH) feel the change will help to staff police departments properly. “There is a recruitment issue for police officers across this great state,” Roegner said.

Other supporters argued that, according to 13 ABC, people who are 18 are old enough to enlist in the U.S. military and said other cities in the state already have those rules applied, with Columbus hiring officers at 20 years old.

Some opposers of the bill agree that staffing issues need to be rectified but feel this isn’t the right way to do it. Sen. Paula Hicks-Hudson (D-OH) called the proposal “misguided.” Others think teenagers aren’t mature enough to handle police duties. Sen. Michele Reynolds (R-OH) agrees with that sentiment but accepts that may not be true for all aspiring young officers. “It is important to note that age and maturity are not mutually exclusive,” Reynolds told the Inquirer.

State representatives aren’t the only ones giving the bill the side-eye. The state’s largest police union and several departments have allegedly spoken out publicly against the bill and the National Fraternal Order of Police. “We do not believe a teenager can be a police officer,” FOP lobbyist Mike Weinman said. “We fear these officers, who can’t purchase a beer, will be left to fend for themselves to handle challenging calls that could expose them to second-guessing and trauma.”

There’s a long road for this bill that needs House approval before heading to the desk of Gov. Mike DeWine.

Da Brat Apologizes For Her Controversial Comments About Black Sperm Donor

Da Brat Apologizes For Her Controversial Comments About Black Sperm Donor

Da Brat’s been out and about since announcing that she and her partner, Jessica “Judy” Harris-Dupart, are expecting; including a recent visit to the Tamron Hall Show to clear up comments made about their decision to go with a non-Black sperm donor on a recent episode of their WE tv series, Brat Loves Judy.

“If you look like Jiminy Cricket — the one or two Black people I saw… that thing ain’t finna be looking like my child,” Da Brat said on the series. The statement’s racial undertones made many wonder if the “Funkadified” rapper did not want her child to look Black, which many fans took issue with. In their sit-down with Hall, the pair spoke candidly about their health risks and concerns and how it added another layer of restrictions on how and with whom they could safely conceive. After narrowing their search from “thousands of donors down to 224” to “about one,” they were displeased with the Black donors who ended up in their pool, according to LoveBScott.

Da Brat insisted that her comments were “taken way out of context” and were never intended to offend.

“I didn’t think it would be offensive to anybody. I cracked jokes about almost everybody that I saw; that one just happened to make it in the show. I wasn’t trying to be mean or say anything negative about Black people,” Da Brat said. “I guess they thought it was funny, and I didn’t think it would bother anybody, or else I would have taken it out. I had no idea people were going to be so offended, but I meant no harm whatsoever.”

She explained that the couple hoped they’d find a Black sperm donor and were deeply disappointed not to find one who met their standards. “We were looking for a Black donor,” the Atlanta rapper clarified. “We’re Black, we wanted a Black donor. So it was just misconstrued and taken way out of context.”

Well, words mean things. Hopefully, this has been a teachable moment for the Da Brat.

Key Strategies for Single Mothers to Build Generational Wealth

Every parent has a single priority in their lives, and it is to find the best available opportunities to help their children have a wonderful life & wealth. Whether we are parents yet or not, we would all want our children to have the best life could offer, to lead healthy, happy, and prosperous lives for all times to come.

Money cannot buy happiness, but one cannot deny its value and necessity. Transferring your wealth to your offspring is a good way to ensure they will be well looked after. Financial stability is something we all strive for, but being a single parent with no inheritance or money to their name can pose serious problems. More so if one is a single mother, in any given society.

What is generational wealth?

Simply put, it is an inheritance or legacy of substantial value that you can pass on to your offspring. A significant amount of generational wealth is a valuable asset as it can bridge any wealth gaps that may exist for future generations.

Life can be tricky, and considering current scenarios, nothing in life is guaranteed – least of all a secure future. If you can provide your children with a pre-set amount, they can try their luck in life, and finding success can become infinitely easier for them.

Why is life more difficult for single mothers?

There are multiple reasons people get into relationships. However, one crucial reason they get married is that the institution of marriage comes with many comforts. If you are a married couple, you can get access to tax breaks, housing, and children benefits, and since there are potentially two breadwinners in the house, the expenses can be split amongst them.

On the contrary, if you’re a single mother, everything can become way more demanding than one can imagine. Single mothers face multiple problems while rearing their kids in every society; they belong to the most distressed class of any state or country, with almost 30% of families surviving below the poverty line in the US only.

Single parents, especially single mothers, are at a considerable disadvantage because of the gender pay gap – as if life wasn’t handicapped enough. All these challenges can leave one baffled and in a state of bewilderment because no one ever plans on living a difficult life.

The silver lining, however, in all such situations is that there are specific ways and measures that a person can adopt to help overcome such disadvantages.

How to build generational wealth?

Let’s be honest. Regardless of whichever society a woman comes from, she has to face more problems and work much harder to generate the same amount of money as a man does in the same situation. It’s a fact that women are considerably more underpaid than their male counterparts.

Nothing can be worse than having to leave work to take up the caregiving responsibilities for the family, only to end up broke with not a penny to their name. A single mother has to focus entirely on not just making ends meet every month. Still, she should also make sure to find ways of generating easy extra income by making sound investments in accounts with a tax advantage.

Here are a few steps that one can take to ensure success:

Find a side hustle

There is no point in working a 9-to-5 day job, followed by a second job which is just as demanding. All of this becomes a lot more challenging once the kids are school-going; they need some time from the only parent they have. So investing in a side hustle is flexible enough to allow you to work from home, thereby allowing one to give quality time to their kids while making extra bank.

For instance, one can try being a virtual teacher. Multiple online spaces offer remote tutoring jobs, a lot of which have gained attention during the pandemic. Numerous businesses have closed their physical stores and have remained online even after the pandemic is dying down.

Another way of earning is to start a carpool service, that is if you have a suitable vehicle. You can pick and drop off other children in your community, and make a means to earn through that. There is also the possibility of making deliveries of various sorts; they could be groceries or dry cleaning and washing. All the extra cash you gain can be used to build a wealth account for your kids to inherit. You can invest it to earn a profit, or you can keep it safe for their college fund.

Invest in your children’s academic future

A college education is becoming extremely expensive everywhere, day by day. If you have young kids at home, it can be an excellent opportunity for single parents to invest some money regularly to help their children get a proper education. An educated generation has a lot better chance to lead a prosperous life.

There are multiple education plans offered by investment institutions, and some government-backed plans to help pay student loans. You can invest in them to reap the maximum benefits for your children.

Invest in real estate

Real estate has immense potential to provide excellent returns on investment or ROIs. The value of a real estate asset usually appreciates over time, depending on its nature and current market trends. If you purchase a property – be it a house or a piece of land – and then keep it until all the payments are made, it will one day belong to your kids and grandkids.

They can either use it as a house to live in or sell it off in case another opportunity arises where they can avail the money that they get from the sale. There won’t be any extra fees to bear, except for the general insurance or utility bills.

Put up a space for rent within your house

If you’re blessed enough to own a home, renting a part of it can help generate some good secondary income. It doesn’t have to be a permanent deal; there are other viable options, like Airbnb, that can help out nicely. Plus, you can choose to whom you rent out your space.

It’s understandable how not everyone would feel comfortable sharing their home space with strangers, so in that case, other assets like your car can be used. People living in densely populated suburbs can rent out parking spots to make a bit of extra money.

Some people invest in insurance policies to help ensure their children’s future. They are generally long-term investments, lasting up to 20 or 30 years, and your children will stand to inherit money when you’re gone or when the term is up.

These are some of the many ways that can help in ensuring a secure future for your children. If you need a sign and some help to start up, then look no further. Through it all, be sure to stay proactive, and don’t lose heart in the face of adversity.

Anita Baker Claps Back And Reclaims Her Time After Social Media Criticism

Songstress Anita Baker wants the public to know she’s good and grown. She wants to make it very clear that she has the ear of many fans, that she shuts down concert halls despite glitches in the matrix—and that her faith in God is unbroken. Baker wants folks to know she is a GOAT.

On Twitter, the Detroit native posted:

“65 yrs old. Happy. Trending. Played our 120th Sold Out Concert, thru Tech Issues, to Our AMAZING Fans… God is Good.
#AnitaBaker”

https://twitter.com/iamanitabaker/status/1656821859478847495?s=46&t=EnI8LpkKUkdwbsuH0OtHUQ

Baker even shared a bit of banter with several followers who responded with praise and spoke to the “Tech issues” that occurred at her performance. Jody Watley paid homage to Baker in her emoji response:

https://twitter.com/jodywatley/status/1656833190735269888?s=20

The “Giving You The Best That I Got” tweeted her perspective May 11, after a day of social media criticism that stemmed from a post singer/songwriter Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds made on Instagram, apologizing to fans who did not get to see him perform as the opening act for Baker’s concert stop in Newark, New Jersey.

Thousands of social media users and singer celebrities rallied around Babyface, sending love and sharing regards.

“We love you, brother” DJ D Nice commented.

Powerhouse singer Stephanie Mills responded,

“Love you Babyface you can come with me!”

In a second response she continued:

“I hate when this happens amongst our people. We should be thankful that people are still paying to come to our shows. We’re not kids anymore. This makes me really sad to see and read this.”

Among support for the multitalented producer, there was speculation around Baker’s alleged history of lateness, difficulty, and diva behavior. Quite a bit of shade and side eyes riddled Babyface’s comments section. A number of Baker fans defended her honor.

“I find it weird how they just took baby face position and back? And don’t even know why Anita made her decision.”

“It’s funny to me all those comments are by WOMEN blindly supporting a man without questioning where Ms. Anita was coming from or even the behind the scenes of it all.”

While no reports have surfaced to detail what took place on May 10 at the Prudential Center, casting judgment remains in the air.
