NY Governor Kathy Hochul Regrets Suggesting Black Kids In The Bronx Don’t Know What ‘Computer’ Means

Who doesn't know what a computer is?

Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul alleged she misspoke when suggesting “Black kids from the Bronx dont know what a computer is.”

The comment was made on May 6 while Hochul was being interviewed at a business conference in California while discussing the expansion of economic opportunities in AI for low-income communities. “Right now, we have young Black kids growing up in the Bronx who don’t even know what the word computer is. They don’t know, they don’t know these things,” Hochul said.

As the comment has gone viral on social media, the governor said “I misspoke, and I regret it. Of course, Black children in the Bronx know what computers are — the problem is that they too often lack access to the technology needed to get on track to high-paying jobs in emerging industries like AI,” Hochul said.

“That’s why I’ve been focused on increasing economic opportunity since Day One of my Administration and will continue that fight to ensure every New Yorker has a shot at a good-paying job.”

Social media users jumped to defend those mentioned kids. “We have children in the Bronx that can build a computer with their eyes closed. We also don’t have STEM programs accessible for them. We have been advocating for more programs, but Miss Kathy isn’t funding them,” @urbanmodernis tweeted.

Another spoke on being frustrated with people constantly being able to apologize for “misspeaking” about Black people. “So, everyone just gets to apologize for “misspeaking” about Black people without ever having to answer why they constantly *choose* to demean and disrespect Black people with their words (and actions) time and time again,” @GJonesWright said.

State legislators were also taken aback by the comment. Assemblywoman Amanda Septimo, a Bronx Democrat, called the governor’s words “harmful, deeply misinformed, and genuinely appalling.” “Repeating harmful stereotypes about one of our most underserved communities while failing to acknowledge the state’s consistent institutional neglect only perpetuates systems of abuse,” she said.

“I would invite Gov. Hochul to visit us in the Bronx to experience first-hand the intelligence, resilience, and joy that radiate from Bronx children and residents each day.”

However, other lawmakers are looking past them.

According to The New York Daily News, Mayor Eric Adams gave Hochul a pass, saying he knows she meant no harm and he knows the governor’s “heart.” “When you make thousands of speeches, when you’re in front of the cameras all the time, when you’re trying to be authentic and say the things that you’re really feeling, one can sit back and do a critical analysis of every sentence you say,” the mayor said.

“I know her heart. I know what she was intending to say, and she was not trying to be disrespectful to the people of the Bronx.” Fellow Bronx representative, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, also defended his governor, saying he believes Hochul “wants to see all of our students excel.”

WNBA To Provide Charter Planes To Help Ensure Players’ Safety

The new commitment extends full-time charter service throughout the regular WNBA season and is projected to cost nearly $25 million per year.

In a significant move aimed at addressing player safety concerns that have persisted for years, the WNBA has announced a commitment of $50 million over the next two years to provide full-time charter flight services for its teams during the season.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert unveiled this decision on Tuesday, May 7. According to The Associated Press, Engelbert revealed in a meeting with sports editors that the league is working to launch the charter program, which is estimated to cost nearly $25 million per year for the upcoming two seasons.

The new commitment extends full-time charter service throughout the regular season. The WNBA previously announced plans to cover charter flights for the entire playoffs and consecutive games during the upcoming season. A 2023 plan posed a program projecting an annual cost of approximately $4 million. Engelbert previously acknowledged the need for the league to be in a financially stable position to implement the initiative.

The decision to prioritize player safety through charter flights comes in the wake of an incident in 2023 in which Brittney Griner and her Phoenix Mercury teammates were confronted by a “provocateur” at a Dallas airport, the Associated Press noted. “The safety of Brittney Griner and all WNBA players is our top priority,” the league stated at the time. Griner was granted permission to book her own charter flights due to security concerns stemming from her highly publicized detainment in Russia.

Lynx forward Napheesa Collier emphasized the safety this initiative will provide for WNBA athletes, stating, “All these players and these faces are becoming so popular that it really is about that as much as it is about recovery,” Collier said.

The WNBA’s popularity has soared, fueled by the excitement surrounding 2024 draft picks like LSU forward Angel Reese, who, as BLACK ENTERPRISE previously reported, contributed to a surge in ticket sales after being drafted to teams like the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever. Fans have already secured tickets to witness the highly anticipated June rivalry between Reese and former University of Iowa guard Caitlin Clark, whose NCAA matchups drew long lines and packed arenas.

Kamala Harris Makes Surprise Speech At NCCU Commencement

Harris spoke about the value of an HBCU education, something that she knows firsthand.

Kamala Harris, a Howard University alumna, sent a special message to North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) graduates.

The vice president surprised attendees at the May 4 commencement ceremony in a pre-recorded video. In her speech, she spoke to NCCU’s graduating class on how the nation needs its leadership now more than ever.

“As Vice President of the United States, I tell you—no matter what path you choose to follow from here—our nation needs you,” Harris said, as reported by HBCU Gameday. “We need your ambition. We need your aspirations [and] your voice, and we need your leadership.”

Harris also emphasized the value of an HBCU education, leading her back to the similar halls she walked during her own matriculation.

“As a proud HBCU graduate—I know firsthand—the value of attending an institution like yours,” Harris said. “You leave here having been taught that you can do and be anything. And that you have a duty to be excellent. To work to uplift the condition of all people. And to fight to protect our most fundamental rights and freedoms.”

She added, “So, as you set out on the next chapter of your life. Remember, there is no obstacle you cannot overcome. There is no barrier that you cannot break. And there is no limit to your capacity for greatness.”

Harris has also stopped by multiple college campuses as she and President Joe Biden seek re-election this year. In September, she visited HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions for the Fight For Our Freedoms tour to advocate for reproductive rights.

The Biden-Harris ticket has also struggled with reinvigorating the Black electorate, which is considered crucial to winning against Trump. In light of this, Harris has numerous engagements to connect with Black voters ahead of November.

UPenn Becomes First Ivy League College To Launch AI Degree Programs

The school will offer both a bachelor's and a master's in the newly established academic discipline.

The University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) is offering the first-ever degree programs in AI in the Ivy League.

UPenn announced the degree will be part of its School of Engineering and Applied Science. Students will earn their Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in Engineering in AI at the Raj and Neera Sing Program in Artificial Intelligence, with the advanced degree offered online.

The school’s interim president J. Larry Jameson explained to Penn Today how the new degree offerings will align with an evolving focus on AI.

“Inventive at its core, Penn excels at the cutting edge,” Jameson said in February. “Data, including AI, is a critical area of focus for our strategic framework, In Principle and Practice, and this new degree program represents a leap forward for the Penn engineers who will lead in developing and deploying these powerful technologies in service to humanity. We are deeply grateful to Raj and Neera Singh, whose leadership helps make this possible.”

The comprehensive program will offer courses in machine learning, data analytics, and advanced robotics. The school hopes to lead the Ivy League in exploring AI’s untapped potential for bettering society. In its statement introducing the Master’s option, the program will also aid students in developing new systems as AI becomes more prevalent in today’s world.

“The online Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) degree at Penn Engineering will empower students with both the practical skills and the ethical foundations to lead AI into the future,” shared the school, as reported by AfroTech. “Building on the expertise of the School’s world-class faculty, the program will equip students with the mathematical and algorithmic foundation to develop groundbreaking AI systems along with the broad perspective to deploy new technologies in an ethical and responsible way.”

Moreover, its acknowledgment of AI as an academic discipline suggests a shift in the attitude toward its use. While some fear AI’s widespread use jeopardizing jobs, especially for Black workers, the trend is not slowing down.

The Bachelor’s program will begin this fall, with the cohort of Master’s students starting in the subsequent spring semester. The program’s website lists more information on applications and course curricula.

Help Mom Get Into Her Wealth-Building Bag For Mother’s Day

Originally Published May 12, 2013.

Mother’s Day is just a few days away. If you haven’t already done so by now (and you know you should have), you’re about to purchase a nice gift, along with the bouquet of flowers, candy and cards designed to express in one day all the love you have for the person many of us take for granted during most of the other 364 days of the year. That’s okay. Most will appreciate the gifts and will love you just the same. That said, cards are eventually discarded (or stored away in the limbo of attics and basements), candy is eaten (most of it by you, likely as not) and flowers will wilt and die. (Please tell me you didn’t buy plastic ones.)

As for the gifts, Mom will likely be thrilled with the clothes, shoes, jewelry, and night out at that fancy restaurant you have planned for her. (You’re not really going to let her cook, are you?) However, your mother has probably spent your entire life investing in you. Mother’s Day is a great time to return the favor, by thinking of gifts that will not just celebrate her for the day, but that will literally enrich her life. Here are a few of my suggestions for gifts to help Mom build wealth for Mother’s Day:

Pay her bills.

You’ve been running up her bills most of your life (she was right, you don’t own the electric company). How about you paying all of her bills —including the rent or mortgage, utilities, and even her credit card payments — for the month of May? If this is too much to handle on your own, recruit your siblings and others who love your momma as if she were their own to chip in. Or pick the biggest monthly bill, and pay that. Or pick a credit card and pay down the entire balance. Whatever you can imagine and your budget can handle. Six months from now, what do you think she’ll find to be the more memorable gift?

Pay for a consultation with a certified financial planner.

Chances are, while she was focusing all her energy and planning around providing for you, your mom was neglecting herself, including her finances and especially her retirement planning. Setting up and paying for a meeting with a financial planner is a great way to let her know you want her to focus on taking care of herself for a change.

Husbands, show her the money.

And the insurance policies, wills, deeds, credit reports and tax filings. Don’t stop at what, but also show her where they are, in case she needs them in an emergency. Few things are sadder than a grieving widow beset with financial disaster because she doesn’t know where insurance polices and other key paperwork is, how to deal with tax issues, or even how to access bank accounts. Every day, women who left such things to their husbands are caught out there when he suddenly dies. It is a major act of love to give her the security of knowing that should she suddenly lose you, not only have you provided for her, but she knows exactly where to look to access those provisions, including account numbers, passwords, insurance policies and other important documents, when she needs them most.

By the way, none of these gifts will get you off the hook. Mom still deserves flowers, candy, a little shopping, to be wined and dined, and to be generally treated like the queen she is on Mother’s Day. However, helping her to build wealth and gain a measure of financial security is a priceless gift — one that you’ll appreciate receiving from your children some day. Establishing Wealth for Life as a Mother’s Day tradition today could pay off big for you tomorrow.

The One Club Helps Launch The ‘Come Up’ Networking Brunch For Black Professionals

The Atlanta event brought panelists across the corporate, entertainment, and entrepreneurial spaces.

The “Come Up” is upon us. The new organization partnered with The One Club For Creativity for a Black networking brunch in Atlanta.

As part of the club’s “Where Are All The Black People At?” programming, The Come Up brunch connected Black professionals across industries for its May 4 event. It intended to foster community through food and mentorship channeled through its attendees and accomplished panelists.

Panels featured key speakers sharing their journeys to entrepreneurial or corporate success. Its “Access Granted” panel included marketing directors at Coca-Cola, creative strategists, and VML’s Global Chief Design Officer, Kaleeta McDade. During the discussion, attendees gained knowledge on building careers from the ground up or learning to pivot into new fields. Equally, its lay-off conversation engaged seasoned HR professionals on how to prepare and elevate when being laid off.

Moreover, Deja Mays, a moderator for the panels and co-founder of The Come-Up, spoke to BLACK ENTERPRISE about the partnership with The One Club to dismantle the obstacles stopping Black professionals from rising in the ranks.

“We reached out to The One Club because we noticed there were things going on in the industry with mid-level talent,” shared Mays.

“[We thought] a brunch would be the perfect way to connect people and bring them together. There’s a lot of Black talent in Atlanta that is on the come up, they just need the right resources and people supporting them to get there.”

Lastly, its final conversation introduced Peter Brooks, vice president of Growth Strategy for BET and VH1 at Paramount, and the founders of the city’s top creative consulting firms, Butter ATL and Atlanta Influences Everything. Alongside The One Club’s Global Head of DEI, Adrienne Lucas, the theme of “Your Network is Your Net Worth” emphasized that the connections one builds throughout one’s career can be a determining factor toward growth and success.

Brooks, who also founded consulting firm 28th and Foster, shared his personal reasoning for becoming a panelist and why he aligns with the firm’s mission of building connections.

“Being able to find that tribe is really important. Being amongst people that have value and want to give that value, I just love it,” expressed Brooks. “In the entertainment world, there’s always new things going on, from new technologies or processes. Always stay hungry to learn and be willing to develop new connections where you can provide value to the space. ”

The Come Up also hopes this journey will lead to more Black leaders in the C-suite and beyond. Although the initiative is just getting started, its focus on community-building and career success continues to level up.

Mays added, “We need to connect as a community as we’re stronger together. Everybody starts from somewhere, if we can just connect one person to that right person, I think we’ve done our job. We want everyone who attends to feel empowered and have the tools to get to the next level in their career.”

The One Club’s website features its latest events and future endeavors with The Come Up.

College Student Who Raised $400K For Unhoused Man In D.C. Returns Money To Donors

Graden posted multiple videos to TikTok explaining why the money had to be refunded.

Sanai Graden went viral for raising over $400,000 for an unhoused man in Washington, D.C. However, the coed had to refund the money to donors after losing touch with its intended recipient.

Graden explained the issue in multiple TikTok videos amassing millions of views. Graden, who attends UC Berkeley in California, temporarily relocated to D.C. for an internship. While walking through its downtown in late January, she met Alonzo Douglas Hebron. She originally went viral after documenting herself obtaining Hebron’s medication as well as a hotel room for the night.

“I really did try to help him,” explained Graden in one of the clips. “I tried to transform his whole life. But sometimes, when you want something for somebody, they may not want that for themselves.”

The unlikely duo rose to social media fame. Graden created a GoFundMe to raise money on his behalf. The GoFundMe reached over $400,000 in donations before Graden had to stop the venture.

Prior to this update, his violent past came to light, including his assault on another unhoused woman, according to the Washington Post. Despite this, Graden intended to help the man receive the help he needed to turn his life around. Upon the news breaking, Hebron became more reclusive and harder to get in touch with.

“All I wanted was to get him housing, get him medical care,” she said in another post. “There’s only so much I can do. I cannot force him to do certain things. At the end of the day, he’s grown.”

GoFundMe also released a statement on the botched fundraiser, claiming that the lack of cooperation from Hebron resulted in the refunds.

“Since the fundraiser’s launch, GoFundMe remained fully committed to helping deliver the funds raised to Mr. Hebron, just as the donors intended,” explained the company. “However, without the cooperation of the organizer or the beneficiary, delivering these funds to Mr. Hebron has not been possible.”

Graden also received $25,000 in another fundraiser to support her schooling. She concluded the series of posts by stating she would focus on graduating.

Reggie Bush Wants His Reputation With The NCAA Restored After Getting Heisman Trophy Back, ‘The Truth Is On My Side’

Reggie Bush has his Heisman Trophy back. Now he wants his reputation restored by the NCAA.

After having his Heisman Trophy returned, Reggie Bush is on a mission to have his reputation within the NCAA restored.

The NFL alum, who played for the USC Trojans, had his 2005 Heisman Trophy for the most outstanding player in the nation restored on Thursday, May 2, AP News reported. With the prestigious honor back in his hands 14 years after he forfeited the trophy, Bush is ready to fight the NCAA to re-establish his college football career’s reputation.

The two-time All-American running back does not doubt his efforts since he “never cheated” during his three seasons at USC.

“There was never a doubt in my mind that it would come,” Bush said. “Because I know the truth is on my side.”

Though Bush and his legal team thanked the Heisman Trust for reinstating his trophy during Thursday’s press conference, they acknowledged their plans to continue their defamation lawsuit against the NCAA. The former New Orleans Saints player sued the NCAA last August for their 2021 statement that accused him of receiving payment for playing football at the University of Southern California.

“It was more of being labeled a cheater,” Bush said. “The trophy … being taken away from me (was painful), but being labeled a cheater was far worse, because I’ve never cheated, and there’s no proof of that, that I’ve cheated.”

It was back in 2010 when Bush forfeited his Heisman Trophy after the NCAA accused him of accepting improper payments from an external source while he was a college athlete. The College Football Hall of Famer was stripped of his collegiate titles and voluntarily returned his 2005 Heisman Trophy.

Speed up 11 years later, when the NCAA introduced policy changes that allow student-athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness. Bush hoped his case would be reconsidered under the new guidelines, however the NCAA says their “rules still do not permit pay-for-play type arrangements.”

But their 2021 claims of Bush being paid to play at USC is what garnered the defamation suit.

“It’s about truth, getting the facts out, and holding the NCAA accountable,” Bush said at the time.

While Bush has his Heisman Trophy back, the NCAA still vacated 14 wins by the USC Trojans and erased many of Bush’s achievements from the record books. He’s hoping his defamation suit will reverse the governing body’s stance.

“This is a clarion call to the NCAA to do the right thing, to get on the right side of history,” attorney Ben Crump said.

“You can’t get to this, or a national championship, by cheating,” Bush said. “I promise you that.”
