College Students Discuss How NCCU Programs Support Black Male Student Success

North Carolina Central University is known to support Black male students through its on-campus programs.

The university offers programs like the Marathon Teaching Institute to support Black male students. MTI is committed to “increasing the number of African-American male teachers, counselors, and Pk-16 administrators. We will decrease the critical shortage of educators of color, particularly African American male teachers, in North Carolina schools.”

According to ABC 11, males only account for 30% of the student population at NCCU, while females comprise 70%.

“The mission of the MTI is to recruit, retain and prepare male students of color for excellence in the field of education. Through unique academic support, service to K-12 schools, professional development opportunities and mentorship, MTI will develop leaders who promote social justice and dedicate themselves to changing to landscape in Pk-16 education,” the program’s mission states.

“The NCCU Marathon Teaching Institute responds to diversity needs in education, while also preparing students for academic and career success,” Audrey W. Beard, Ed.D., NCCU School of Education dean, said during the program’s induction in 2021.

ABC 11 spoke with first-generation college student Gareon Green, who shared his perspective on why he thinks males choose not to go to college after high school.

“Most of them say school isn’t for them,” Green said, referring to some of his high school buddies. “The work they say is not for them.” Green, who wants to major in criminal justice and be a lawyer, said, “Doing the work isn’t hard. It’s the things you put before your work, that’s not more important than your work.”

Marquis Smith, president of MTI, shared how the students are nurtured by campus leaders who host informational meetings, expose them to local school districts, and provide networking opportunities.

“It’s a pathway designed for minority males to advance their way into the classroom,” said Smith, who desires to be a history professor. “A lot of teachers are women. So I feel like males in the classroom hold weight. Being a Black male is almost a rare sight,” Smith said.

Smith and Green have committed to contributing to the increase in male graduates. Students can join MTI members on Aug. 31 at 10:40 a.m. for an interest meeting.

Malika Andrews Taking Over As ESPN’s NBA Finals Host

With all the current changes at ESPN, this one should be a great look! Reportedly, Malika Andrews, who is presently hosting NBA Today, is slated to become the new host of the NBA Finals for ESPN.

According to New York Post, Andrews will replace Mike Greenberg, who has led the show for the past two years. Greenberg reportedly left the show when he and ESPN came to a mutual agreement for him to exit NBA Countdown because of his busy schedule.

It’s been a real Hollywood shuffle, with some of the network’s top talent being let go in recent weeks.

Arguably, two of the network’s top play-by-play guys, former NBA player and coach Mark Jackson and former basketball head coach Jeff Van Gundy, were let go as part of the recent talent shakeup at the network. Mike Breen remains but will be joined by recently hired former NBA head coach Doc Rivers, and Doris Burke will now be the latest addition to the play-by-play team.

Former NBA player Jalen Rose was another analyst laid off earlier this summer during the ESPN personnel cuts.

Andrews will still be hosting NBA Today along with her other new duties.

She initially held reporting duties on the sidelines of the NBA Finals when she took over for Rachel Nichols. She then replaced Nichols in hosting the daily NBA show. Andrews also took Maria Taylor’s previous spot as lead for NBA Countdown. Andrews has hosted Countdown for the past two years, but not during the prime-time editions and not the NBA Finals pregame show.

Basketball Insiders reported that Andrews joined ESPN in October 2018, covering the Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks. She has appeared on SportsCenter, Get Up, Around the Horn, and The Jump.

Luther Vandross Estate Partners With Waterford For Two Luxury Crystal Collections

The late R&B music icon Luther Vandross’ legacy continues in new ways. The late singer’s estate has announced a special edition set of two luxury crystal drinking glass collections in collaboration with Waterford.

The renowned Irish hand-crafted luxury crystal company unveiled two special Luther Vandross X Waterford crystal collections, Luther 81 and the limited-edition Luther 81 X.

Made in partnership with the Luther Vandross Estate and Primary Wave Music, a commercial campaign for Luther 81 X was released on Thursday, Aug. 10. The collection was inspired by the Grammy-winning artist’s platinum single “Never Too Much.”

The commercial captured the joy Vandross’ musical ode to love still brings decades after its 1981 release. The luxury crystal glasses made in his honor aim to inspire the same joy. Pieces include glasses for cocktails, martinis, champagne, and lavish cocktail shaker.

“Our collaboration with Waterford beautifully symbolize this, adding a level of sincerity and elegance that embodies Luther’s legacy in a unique, tangible way,” Lisa Fruggiero, VP of brand partnerships at Primary Wave Musc, said.

A limited-edition decanter is among the collection for $1,300, along with a stunning crystal platinum vinyl record for $15,000. The vinyl is a unique crystal art piece commemorating Luther’s double-platinum debut album, “Never Too Much.” The 12-inch wall-mounted crystal disc is set against steel and brass and features 81 polished precision-cut track grooves with the singer’s signature hand-etched into the center.

“Luther Vandross’ genuine affinity for crystal always mirrored the crystal-clear quality of his voice and spirit,” Lisa Fruggiero, vp of brand partnerships at Primary Wave Music said.

By Friday, the decanter was the first piece to sell out, the one addition that was auctioned off to benefit the Luther Vandross Foundation.

Each piece in the collection of cocktail and barware features a karo cut design highlighting a line from Luther’s song along with a single hand-cut karo kiss on its base, as noted by Billboard. “A thousand kisses from you is never too much,” the glassware reads.

It was during the Foundation’s inaugural luncheon in Philadelphia in April when a one-of-a-kind crystal piece was marked with ‘kiss cuts’ by members of Luther’s Foundation, his Estate, scholarship recipients, and cut by a Waterford Master Craftsman.

The collection is on brand for the late music icon who prided himself in his love for luxury interior design.

“This unique collection honors Luther Vandross’ timeless legacy, beautifully capturing the spirit of his music in each crystal piece,” David Gottlieb, manager of the Luther Vandross Estate said.

“It’s more than just barware — it’s a testament to Luther’s profound influence on music and his ever-present essence in our lives,” Fruggiero said.

The Luther Vandross X Waterford collection is available on waterford.com and exclusively at Bloomingdale’s in the U.S., David Jones in Australia, House of Waterford in Ireland, and Harrods in the U.K.

Tony ‘The Closer’ Robinson Responds to DJ Envy’s Defamation Lawsuit, ‘They Trying to Bully Me’

Tony “The Closer” Robinson is responding to DJ Envy’s defamation lawsuit and says he won’t be bullied into backing down.

On Thursday, August 10, details on the defamation suit DJ Envy, real name Raashaun Casey, filed against former NFL player Tony “The Closer” Robinson, The Shade Room reports. According to the lawsuit, Envy accuses Robinson of spreading false and malicious claims about the radio personality’s real estate dealings across social media.

The defamation claims stem from various social media posts where Robinson labeled Envy a “thief,” “criminal,” and “scammer” who operates a “Ponzi scheme,” that has “stolen millions.” The salacious claims stem from a lawsuit against Envy’s business partners Cesar and Jennifer Pina, one that “The Breakfast Club” host has filed a motion to dismiss.

Envy also calls out an Instagram Live session he had with Robinson that the former pro athlete reportedly used to “prove” the disc jockey was aware of the fraud allegations against the Pinas.

Envy’s legal team claims Robinson’s allegations have harmed the radio personality’s potential business deals and contractual relationships with potential business partners. The father of six is seeking compensatory and punitive damages.

However, Robinson isn’t backing down. He took to Twitter on Thursday to respond to the defamation suit saying he won’t be bullied into being silent about the alleged millions stolen from the community.

“First they tried to send goons to my crib to silence me from telling the victims story now they trying to bully me in court!!” Robinson wrote.

“Naw you won’t push me around as you let your partner steal millions from the community #NoRefundsNoPeace.”

In May, Rick Ross took a jab at Envy by posting a video clip of him and Robinson’s hang-out session. Podcast host Joe Budden has also called out Envy for the fraud allegations.

Boston Man Files Lawsuit Against White Nationalist Group For Brutal Beating During March

Charles Murrell III of Boston has filed a lawsuit against the white nationalist group Patriot Front following a brutal beating inflicted upon him by the organization’s members. The attack occurred near the Boston Public Library on July 2, 2022, where Murreplayeding the saxophone during a march in which white supremacist insignia was openly displayed.

According to the Associated Press, Murrell and his legal counsel seek to bankrupt the Patriot Front and send a clear message to other hate groups.

“Because I am a teacher, because I come from special education, I am filing this suit so that even if one of them has a safer sidewalk to walk on, the work that I am doing will have been very much worth it,” he said.

The march was attended by over 100 members of the white nationalist group, carrying banners with “Reclaim America” plastered onto them. Similar “demonstrations” have been held throughout the country; attendees are often dressed in khaki pants, dark shirts, hats, sunglasses, and face coverings to conceal their identities and thwart legal repercussions.

No charges have been filed concerning the attack on the 36-year-old Murrell; however, his lawsuit claims his injuries were significant.

“As a result of this beating, Mr. Murrell sustained physical injuries to his face, head, and hand, all of which required medical attention. Mr. Murrell also continues to suffer significant emotional distress to this day as a result of the incident,” the suit says. “Among other harms, those physical and emotional injuries have adversely affected Mr. Murrell’s ability to earn a living as a musician.”

As extremist groups become increasingly emboldened, it’s become clear that violence is not only accepted but encouraged by members.

“What happened to Mr. Murrell was no accident,” the suit says. “For years, Patriot Front … has publicly and privately advocated for the use of violence against those who disagree with its express goal of creating an entirely ‘white’ United States.”

In 2023? Some Schools In The South Still Allow Paddling As A Form Of Student Discipline

In 2023? Some Schools In The South Still Allow Paddling As A Form Of Student Discipline

In more than 15 states across the country, paddling is still an option for student discipline in schools, the Washington Post reports.

Primarily in the South, children can receive paddling, or corporal punishment, for several reasons, including talking too much, disrupting class, breaking rules, or being late. According to the Civil Rights Data Collection, Mississippi has been at the top of listed states for years, using that form of punishment over others often. Scott County School District has recorded more than 630 incidents during the 2022-2023 school year. Prentiss County used paddling 34 times, amounting to once every week.

School corporal punishment is a physical disciplinary method made to correct student misbehavior. Gaining popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, students were paddled or “spanked” by a district superintendent or school principal.

Critics claim the practice is underreported and varies by race and gender. Black boys are twice as likely to be paddled or struck at school over white boys. Students with disabilities also face a greater risk.

Missouri made headlines in early 2023 when Cassville R-IV School District reinstated paddling to its discipline policy, according to Missouri Independent. The move came after a new state law regarding student discipline required school districts to get written parent permission to give swats before doing so. Districts implementing corporal punishment are expected to send permission slips at the beginning of the school year.

Some district officials were on the fence. Pamela Halstead, administrator of Callao C-8 School District, said that corporal punishment is the last resort. She admitted that the last time she swatted a student was almost 10 years ago at a parent’s request. “I know we’re probably one of a few districts that do keep corporal punishment on there,” Halstead said. “We keep that as an option. Is it going to be the first option? No, not even the second.”

Psychologists and advocates say not only is paddling extreme, but it’s also ineffective in behavior change or learning from mistakes. The practice can cause a misunderstanding of childhood trauma and shows commonality in adults. Studies show adults who were spanked as kids often show antisocial behavior and mental health problems.

Kandi Burruss Doesn’t Support Reality TV Strike But Is In Favor Of A Union

Kandi Burruss can’t get behind Bethenny Frankel’s call for a reality TV strike, since she’s already addressed her issues with Bravo directly.

“The Real Housewives of Atlanta” star shared her thoughts on a former “Real Housewives” star’s call for a boycott against Bravo. Kandi was speaking with ET about her new Photobook cover when she was asked about Frankel’s current campaign to unionize reality stars and strike to demand better contracts.

“I feel like things that I feel or have felt that needed to be addressed, I actually reached out to the network, and we addressed them,” Kandi said of her relationship with Bravo network.

Frankel went public with her boycott campaign last month in a video message and lengthy Instagram caption outlining her call for “fair and reasonable” terms for reality stars across networks.

“Looking into traditional TV residuals is like looking inside “a beautiful mind.” Content used later with no profit sharing & l exploitation of hard-working talent is as archaic as calling empowered independent women “housewives,” Frankel said in part.

NBCUniversal released a statement to Deadline expressing their commitment “to maintaining a safe and respectful workplace for cast and crew on our reality shows.” But Frankel is pushing full steam ahead with her boycott campaign.

As for Kandi, who has starred on “RHOA” since 2009, she has no interest in the boycott since she’s hashed out her own personal issues with Bravo on her own.

“I myself wouldn’t not be a part of that. It wouldn’t make any sense for me to be a part of that,” Kandi said.

“To me, if I’m working with somebody, and I feel like they’re not doing something that they should be doing, I address it right then.”

Kandi went on to seemingly call out Frankel for waiting years after her exit from “Real Housewives of New York City” to take up an issue with the network that helped turn her into a star.

“I don’t feel like you should wait for after. You are not gonna check with them no more, and then come back and try to go for their throat. That’s just how I feel,” Kandi explained.

“So me, any problems or thoughts or concerns I’ve had, I’ve said them. I speak up, you can tell I speak up.”

Frankel is also seeking a union among reality stars, and with Kandi being a part of a union for scripted actors, she’s in support of her reality TV peers forming one.

“That would be nice, if there was a union for unscripted people, that would be nice,” she said. “I mean, obviously, I’m a part of the union for scripted television and I do think that it’s great to see people be able to get residuals, you know, some healthcare and some type of future. So I think if that was possible, it would be nice.”

Republican Byron Donalds Declines NABJ Invitation To Discuss Florida’s Attack On Black History

Black Florida Republican Congressman Byron Donalds recently missed an opportunity to share his thoughts about the controversial elimination of Black history lessons in Florida schools. He was invited to speak on a panel at the 2023 National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) centered around Black history and featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones.

The discussion was scheduled for Friday, Aug. 4. It was promoted as an opportunity for Donalds to answer questions about the recent attacks from Florida lawmakers on critical race theory and Black history lessons being taught in schools. But the legislator failed to show, citing a “scheduling conflict.”

Despite agreeing with many far-right conservative views, Donalds has openly criticized recent decisions by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a fellow Republican, to further restrict critical parts of the Black American experience from being taught to school-aged children.

For his part, Donalds has publicly decried attempts to paint slavery as beneficial for Black enslaved people.

“The attempt to feature the personal benefits of slavery is wrong & needs to be adjusted,” Donalds stated on social media. “That obviously wasn’t the goal & I have faith that FLDOE will correct this.”

However, the 44-year-old congressman helped to write and pass much of the legislation critiqued by Democrats and educators. The adjusted curriculum the lawmaker has supported often highlights African enslavers while downplaying the atrocities inflicted upon the enslaved during chattel slavery by white supremacist figures.

According to The Black Wall Street Times, NABJ’s goal was to have Donalds answer for the harmful legislation he and other Republicans openly support. His absence indicated that the far-right has no interest in accountability, said some.

“They say they want to debate, but they don’t want to debate the people who actually have facts and knowledge,” Hannah-Jones, author of The 1619 Project and Knight Chair of Race and Journalism at Howard University, said in response to Donalds’ sudden cancelation.

“If you believe that Black suffering is because we have a 400-year system” of racism, “then you’re gonna pass policy that’s structural, and why would people in power want any type of structural change?” she said.
