Family And Ben Crump Demand Answers In Tyrone Mason’s Death, Suspect Police Involvement In North Carolina Car Crash

The family of Tyrone Mason and attorney Benjamin Crump are searching for answers related to Mason's crash last year.

The family of Tyrone Mason and attorney Benjamin Crump are searching for answers related to Mason’s crash in October and to that end, Crump called for the release of dash and body camera footage from the crash in Wake County, North Carolina, on March 14, following reports that the officer who responded had almost 200 cases he worked on dismissed in January.

According to NBC News, Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman placed both trooper Garrett Macario and his supervisor, Sgt. Matthew Morrison, on leave after the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation requested that Freeman investigate the car accident further.

In January, Freeman indicated in comments to WRAL that the footage, which has not been released to the public, is disturbing.

“This is concerning to us, and it’s disturbing, but we are committed to doing things the right way,” Freeman said. “We believe credibility among law enforcement officers is essential to the work that we do. We need and have to trust officers. Frankly, when we can’t, it’s disgusting.”

This, along with the dismissal of the cases, seemed to indicate to Crump that there is more to the accident than is currently being shared, which he told reporters at a news conference in Raleigh, North Carolina.

“Let me be clear today, that we know something happened here that is more than they are telling us. They wouldn’t have dismissed those cases if there was not something on that video, from the dash cam and the body cam that was just God awful,” Crump said. “Just show the video.”

Crump continued, “We know that there was a lie from day one when they told her her son died as a result of a single-car accident. When we’re here today, it’s to demand transparency. You don’t need to say no more — just show the video.”

Henrietta Mason, Tyrone’s mother, said, following the news conference, that she has long believed that the account that her son was in a one-car accident never added up to her.

“I never thought my baby would leave this world before me,” Mason said. “From Day 1, when they came to me and told me my son died in a single-car accident with no witnesses, I told them that is not true, someone had to be chasing my son.”

According to NC Newsline, the advocacy of Mason concerning what she believed about the death of her son is what attracted the attention of Crump and another civil rights attorney, Bakari Sellers.

Mason sent hundreds of emails to various government agencies before going to Freeman’s office and sharing her concerns, which led to the inquiry from the State Bureau of Investigations.

Sellers also called on North Carolina’s Governor, Josh Stein, to open an investigation into the state highway patrol, as he believes that Mason’s case is one of many similar cases.

Sellers and Crump are expected to file a lawsuit related to Mason’s death in the coming days, likely to be related to the fact that Macario and Morrison lied and said that Mason died in an accident with no police pursuit.

Mason, meanwhile, pleaded with reporters through tears that someone needs to be held accountable for the death of her son.

“I never thought my baby would leave this world before me,” she said at the news conference. “All that we ask is that everyone come together and get justice for my son, Tyrone Mason.”

Federal Appeals Court Lifts Injunction, Allows Trump DEI Orders To Be Tentatively Enforced

The order gives the Trump administration leeway to enforce the policy while litigation of the policy continues.

A three-judge appeals court allowed Donald Trump’s anti-diversity, equity and inclusion policies to be enforced on March 14, however, that ruling is not final, it just gives the administration leeway to enforce the policy while litigation of the policy continues.

According to Politico, the judges lifted the injunction issued by a lower federal court in February, and in the three judges’ opinions which explained their votes, the judges indicated that the administration be allowed to prove that it will respect First Amendment rights and anti-discrimination laws.

However, two of the judges raised concerns that the Trump administration’s orders could potentially violate the Constitution if federal officials enforce them too zealously, due to the order’s narrow scope of enforcement.

Judge Pamela Harris, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, wrote in her opinion that the Trump orders are not intended to establish that DEI is illegal in a broad context.

“The challenged Executive Orders, on their face, are of distinctly limited scope,” Harris wrote. “The Executive Orders do not purport to establish the illegality of all efforts to advance diversity, equity or inclusion, and they should not be so understood.”

Harris continued, offering a caveat, “Agency enforcement actions that go beyond the Orders’ narrow scope may well raise serious First Amendment and Due Process concerns.”

Chief Judge Albert Diaz, an appointee of President Barack Obama, also argued in his opinion that aggressive implementation of the executive orders targeting diversity, equity and inclusion in the federal government could present problems and also issued a defense of DEI.

“I too reserve judgment on how the administration enforces these executive orders,” Diaz wrote. “It’s unclear what types of programs — formal or informal — the administration seeks to eliminate.”

Diaz continued, “When this country embraces true diversity, it acknowledges and respects the social identity of its people. When it fosters true equity, it opens opportunities and ensures a level playing field for all. And when its policies are truly inclusive, it creates an environment and culture where everyone is respected and valued. What could be more American than that? A country does itself no favors by scrubbing the shameful moments of its past.”

In contrast to the other two judges, judge Allison Rushing, a Trump appointee, argued that the other judges’ defenses of DEI ran counter to their roles as judges.

“Any individual judge’s view on whether certain Executive action is good policy is not only irrelevant to fulfilling our duty to adjudicate cases and controversies according to the law, it is an impermissible consideration,” Rushing wrote in her opinion. “A judge’s opinion that DEI programs ‘deserve praise, not opprobrium’ should play absolutely no part in deciding this case.”

HBCU Hosts ‘100 Women For Howard: A Legacy In Motion Event’ To Empower Women In Sports And Business

The initiative brought together 100 influential women in sports and business to invest in the future of Howard women's basketball.

Howard University celebrated the first iteration of the “100 Women for Howard: A Legacy in Motion” program on March 6, inside the HBCUs Burr Gymnasium. The event, taking place before Howard’s women’s basketball game against Norfolk State, was an initiative that brought together 100 influential women in sports and business with one sole purpose: to encourage them to invest in the future of Howard women’s basketball.

The Women’s History Month celebration created a space centralized around women in sports and empowered them by connecting them to business and media moguls to talk about useful career insights and lived experiences.

The event was born from an idea from the Howard Director of Athletics Kery Davis, according to the Howard University Bison website.

Davis explained that the Legacy in Motion program’s sole goal is to advocate for women by uplifting their aspirations.

Davis said, “‘The 100 Women for Howard: A Legacy in Motion’ event was a tremendous success, demonstrating the power of community and the unwavering support for our women’s basketball program.”

Davis continued about the Howard initiative, “This initiative helped continue our fundraising goals and provided our student-athletes with invaluable mentorship and career connections.”

“Howard Athletics is committed to fostering opportunities that empower our athletes to succeed on and off the court. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to this movement and look forward to continuing to build a strong foundation for the future of Howard Women’s Basketball.”

CEO of The SVE Firm, April D. Taylor, coordinated the event, working with outside vendors and brand partners to provide the panel gifts and products for the event. Through her work, the Howard women’s student-athletes were able to connect with female powerhouses across the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV).

Ty Grace, the Howard head women’s basketball coach added, “Empowering women is important to me, in addition to sustaining economic support towards our NIL collective.”

“There were so many successful and powerful women at this event. The atmosphere was phenomenal. It truly embodied strength, brilliance, and excellence. This legacy in motion will continue to elevate our program, as well as the interests of other women in sports and beyond.

According to Hubison, Taylor explained that the most meaningful part of the program is that it is an empowering way to raise meaningful financial contributions for the Howard women’s basketball program.

Taylor wants to invest in the future of young women who are at the top of their athletic game.

Taylor said, “Watching (the student-athletes) talk to the panelists and see them have real connections made my heart happy.”

“This was a beautiful moment. It’s challenging for student-athletes to have a strong professional development opportunity like this because of their schedules and time commitments, so it was great to provide this platform for them.”

The Legacy in Motion event was created to help student-athletes further their opportunities with outside investments. The event included panels to encourage them to build their brands and prepare for success further beyond their Howard career while maintaining financial stability.

Some speakers in attendance included: Erin Blaine, Fan Experience Manager of the Washington Mystics; Morgan Faulkner, Community Relations & Events Manager for the Washington Commanders; and Patty Medina, Associate AD of SA Development & Inclusive Excellence at American University in the “Let’s Talk: Navigating Leadership and Career Growth” panel.

Grammy-Winning Rapper Jay Rock Arrested In Los Angeles

Jay Rock has been booked on suspicion of illegal firearm possession.

Grammy award-winning rapper Jay Rock was arrested by Los Angeles police on March 13. According to LAPD records, he was taken in near the Watts public housing complex where he grew up and was brought in on charges related to suspicion of illegal firearm possession.

Rock, whose legal name is Johnny Reed McKinzie, was arrested for possession of a firearm at the 13000 block of E. 115th Street in Watts.

LAPD originally stopped Rock near the Nickerson Gardens public housing apartment complex after suspecting him of trespassing and drinking in public. LAPD reported that when confronted, he allegedly fled from his vehicle leaving a firearm inside that police spotted.

In a video circulating X of the arrest, Rock claimed that he ran from police when they did not tell him what he was being detained for. He said in the video, “You don’t even know what I was drinking.”

LAPD reports confirmed that Jay Rock fled from his car after arresting officers refused to tell him why he was being detained — leading to them locating the firearm left behind.

Rock was booked on suspicion of felony weapons violation, violating California Penal Code Section 29800(a)(1).

According to NBC4, the code “prohibits people with prior felony convictions, active felony warrants or certain misdemeanor convictions from possessing a firearm…[and] is a felony charge punishable by up to three years in jail.”

Rock, 39, is most well known for working with the established music label Top Dawg Entertainment and dropping successful collaborations with fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar.

Rock won his Grammy in 2019 for the song “King’s Dead,” which he features alongside Kendrick Lamar, Future, and James Blake. In May of the same year, he was honored with the key to his hometown of Watts, given to him by the former Los Angeles Councilmember Joe Buscaino.

NAACP Sounds Alarm Over Alleged Racism At Virginia Beach High School

Following reports of alleged racial harassment at Kellam High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the Virginia Beach NAACP spoke out.

Following reports of alleged racial harassment at Kellam High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the Virginia Beach NAACP and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office both issued statements decrying the alleged incident and asserting that there was no place for such beliefs and actions in the community.

According to WAVY, the Virginia Beach NAACP’s President, Dr. Eric Majette, issued a statement concerning the allegations and called for school administrators, educators, and community leaders to take decisive action.

“The rise in emboldened racist behavior in recent years is alarming and unacceptable. Racism should have no place in our schools, our communities, or anywhere in society,” Majette said in a statement. The Virginia Beach NAACP is committed to ensuring that all residents, especially African Americans, can live without fear or undue anxiety due to the color of their skin.”

Per the report from WAVY, the students involved are subject to the discipline laid out in the school district’s code of student conduct, which has a zero tolerance policy regarding racial discrimination and harassment.

In addition to the NAACP, Macie Allen, the Public Information Officer for the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office in Virginia Beach, released her own statement to the outlet indicating that although the incident at the high school was reprehensible, it did not meet the level required for criminal charges.

“The situation that occurred at Kellam High School is reprehensible. We understand that people believe the actions of these students should be punished criminally. A thorough investigation was conducted by the Virginia Beach Police Department and reviewed by the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.” Allen said. “The Office has determined that this behavior doesn’t rise to the level of a crime under Virginia statutes. It’s important to note that Virginia’s hate crime statute is not a punitive statute but rather provides the definition of hate crime that can then be used to escalate punishment under other criminal statutes.”

According to 13th News Now, Kellam High School sent an email to families on March 13 about the incident, but beyond saying that one student had been racially harassed by a group of students, and that a staff member intervened immediately after witnessing said harassment, many of the details were vague.

According to the email, “the students involved will be disciplined to the fullest extent possible based upon the school division’s code of student conduct.”

Melinda Rogers, a member of the Virginia Beach School Board, indicated in her comments to the outlet that the incident points to a larger pattern of behavior in Virginia Beach.

“Any kind of racist behavior that is harassment is not acceptable in our community. It’s not the first time it’s happened in our community. We’ve seen instances at Kellam, at Kempsville, at Cox and across the city. Because it keeps happening it tells us this is a problem we need to address,” Rogers said.

Rogers continued, indicating that the board would only address the issue if the parents of students who were involved wanted to appeal the punishments of their children.

“The school board does lack details, and the investigation is ongoing. We don’t have all the details because they [VBCPS] are gathering statements, all of that has to be processed. I feel that we have to do better. Staying silent doesn’t change what is happening. This is why I’ve decided to say something and I absolutely believe that the more we talk about this the more we will say we will not accept this,” Rogers said.

Palmeiras President Leila Mejdalani Pereira Chastises CONMEBOL For ‘Absurd’ Fine Levied For Acts Of Racism During Game

"You see how CONMEBOL views the offence of racism. It's absurd."

The fans of an opposing team racially abused an 18-year-old soccer player. After CONMEBOL, the governing body of the sport (football in South America), fined the Paraguayan club $50,000, Palmeiras president Leila Mejdalani Pereira blasted the organization, saying the punishment was too lenient for the act of blatant racism.

According to ESPN, striker Luighi spoke about the racial abuse he and his team suffered at a recent game against Cerro Porteno. A fan made racist gestures toward the players of the Palmeiras club. Luighi broke down in tears when describing the monkey sounds coming from the opposing team and fans.

Luighi made a statement on his Instagram account regarding the incident.

“It hurts in the soul. And it’s the same pain that all Blacks have felt throughout history, because things evolve, but they are never 100% resolved. Today’s episode leaves scars and needs to be dealt with as it is: a crime. Until when? It’s a question that I hope won’t need to be asked at some point. For now, we keep fighting ✊🏿”

A post shared by Luighi (@luighihanri)

CONMEBOL also banned the fans from attending future home games during the Libertadores under-20 tournament.

The punishment for Cerro Porteno did not sit well with Pereira.

She criticized the organization for how they meted out larger fines for what she deems as lighter offenses.

“Firstly, I would like to express my indignation at CONMEBOL’s penalty of $50,000 and closed gates,” she expressed to TNT Sports. “If you’re a minute late entering the pitch, it’s $100,000. If you light a flare, $78,000. You see how CONMEBOL views the offence of racism. It’s absurd.”

She stated that she and other clubs had forwarded a letter to FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), asking the global governing body to intervene in cases of racism. After the incident, she said she spoke to CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez, who assured her that the punishment would be strict, but she disagreed with his level of strictness.

“When the incident happened, I called President Alejandro, but I couldn’t talk,” Pereira said. “After I gave the interview that everyone saw, he called me and told me that he would be very strict with the sanctions, but from what I saw, he wasn’t that strict. [And you can see that] because of the sanction that CONMEBOL gave for this incident. I have no doubt that this is an incentive for new cases of racism to occur.”

Pereira also threatened to remove the team from CONMEBOL and join with the larger governing body of the sport, Concacaf, which has teams in North America, Central America, and the Caribean.

“I’ll even throw out an idea … why not think about joining Concacaf?” she said. “I think that’s the only way they will respect Brazilian football, because Brazilian football isn’t being respected by CONMEBOL.”

3 Officers Fired Following Fatal Shooting Of Two Brothers By Police In Bay Area

Tahmon and Tommy Wilson were shot by the police in Martinez, California.

Three police officers from the Martinez Police Department have been fired after being involved in the shooting of two brothers, Tahmon and Tommy Wilson. Martinez Police Chief Andrew White identified the four officers who enacted the deadly Aug. 18, 2023 shooting as: Cole Bennett, Marc Kahue, Raul Ceja-Mendez, and Alexander Tirona.

Tahmon and Tommy were shot by the four MPD officers in Martinez, outside of a cannabis dispensary location. While Tommy managed to survive his gunshot wounds, Tahmon died from the incident.

After being shot, police officer Giani Arone taunted the still-living brother — Tommy — by saying, “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”

Police Chief White confirmed on March 15 that three officers had been terminated for their involvement, including Arone. MPD has since released further information about the incident, including police reports, videos, photos, and additional testimonial records.

Tommy is being represented by civil rights attorney Adanté Pointer from Pointer and Buelna law firm. Pointer previously described, “There is no reasonable or lawful explanation for the lethal force employed by the four officers involved. State law prohibits using deadly force against a fleeing vehicle that does not pose an immediate threat.”

The Aug. 18 shooting began when Tommy and Tahmon were declared as suspects attempting to burglarize the Martinez Dispensary called Velvet. Their attempts reportedly triggered a security alarm that called officers to respond.

According to police records, Tommy and Tahmon were driving away from a cannabis store when four officers began shooting at them. Tahmon was hit in the back of his head and Tommy was shot twice in his back by police after their sedan crashed into a fire hydrant.

According to KRON4, Tommy was sitting in the passenger seat of the sedan. After the shooting, Officer Arone arrived on the scene and struck Tommy several times with his knee while the bleeding man was handcuffed.

Arone continued to taunt Tommy after realizing that he had already been shot, telling him, “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”

Chief White wrote a letter to Arone, condemning his conduct on the scene. White wrote, “You violated several Martinez Police Department policies during this incident. One of the suspects — who had been shot — exited the vehicle in the direction of officers and was then handcuffed without resisting. While pulling him, you delivered two or three knee strikes to the suspect’s head/face area. Force was not justified because the suspect was handcuffed, not resisting, and not disobeying any commands.”

Chief White called the use of excessive force against Tommy at the hands of Arone, “disgraceful conduct.”

After fatally shooting Tahmon and beating Tommy, the named officers then engaged in a cover-up, as Officer Arone proceeded to hide two knives for Officer Tirona to conceal from the investigation, one of the officers involved in the shooting since “one of the knives is a type that is prohibited to be worn on duty.”

Chief White concluded, “It is disappointing that misconduct occurred at the scene of this incident after the shooting and understandably adds a layer of complexity to the officer-involved shooting investigation. Once we learned of the misconduct, we took immediate action, conducting thorough investigations, and ultimately imposing termination as a disciplinary measure.”

Currently, the four officers involved in the Wilson shooting are being investigated by the California Department of Justice, and the MPD is awaiting the results.

Dwight Howard Seeks Contempt Of Court Ruling Against Ex In Ongoing Child Support Case

Dwight Howard is escalating his child support case with an ex.

Dwight Howard is escalating his child support case with an ex and is demanding that she be found in contempt of court.

The NBA champion is accusing his ex Tiffany Render of defaming him and wants her found in contempt of court for allegedly violating their court order, The Blast reported. Howard claims Render’s alleged badmouthing exposed their 15-year-old daughter Layla to negativity.

The Orlando Magic star filed a Jan. 8 petition requesting that she be found in “willful” contempt of court.

“[Tiffany] has willfully failed and refused to comply with those requirements and has continued to speak negatively, and publicly, about [Dwight] defaming his name and character and has done so in a manner in which the minor child is exposed to same,” Howard’s lawyer argued.

However, Render argues that Howard’s allegations stem from her casting on The Ladies of Orange County FL, where she stars alongside his other ex Royce Reed. She claims the show, which is currently being pitched to networks, includes no negative remarks about Howard and that she has not violated any court orders.

Howard is moving forward with his petition, with a hearing scheduled for March 27. His lawyers are requesting that Render preserve all texts, emails, and videos relevant to the case.

“[Tiffany] is further notified that a failure to comply with this notice may result in sanctions for any destruction or failures to preserve any such evidence, including, without limitation, adverse inferences against [Tiffany] at trial, as well as an award of expenses and attorney’s fees necessitated by such conduct,” Howard’s lawyers wrote in their petition.

The hearing follows a subpoena Howard issued to Render in November 2024, requesting all communications related to their daughter. The former NBA star seeks access to every email and text exchanged between Render and Layla’s doctors, teachers, coaches, tutors, and youth group leaders.

His legal team has demanded all messages from January 2024 onward, arguing that they are essential to the case. Additionally, Howard is requesting Render’s 2023 tax return, all pay stubs from that year, and any employment records.
