North Carolina’s GOP Leaders Push To Remove The Only Black Woman Supreme Court Judge For Speaking Up Against Racial Bias

Looks like freedom of speech isn’t a thing if you’re a Black woman. After Justice Anita Earls, the only Black woman on North Carolina’s Supreme Court, spoke out about racial bias existing in the courtroom, Republican legislators are trying to have her removed, Slate reports.

Earls spoke to Law 360 in June 2023 about the court’s lack of clerks of color and how her colleagues treated certain attorneys, including a Black woman, who argued before them.

Two months later, in August, GOP leaders and the Judicial Standards Commission are trying to take her seat, claiming the justice’s concerns may violate judicial ethics rules.

If the commission, which investigates complaints against judges, finds a violation, the state Supreme Court would have the upper hand in deciding whether to accept the recommended sanction.

The violation in question states that judges are to conduct themselves “at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary.” In a letter to Earls, the commission argued that she can’t “suggest” another judge being biased unless she “knows this to be the case,” needing definitive proof.

Earls isn’t backing down. She filed a lawsuit on Aug. 29 against the commission, claiming the investigation is “chilling” her First Amendment right to free speech. She described her media comments as core political speech concerning important public policy questions regarding the justice system and administration of the courts.”

Several community leaders and organizations are defending the 2018 elected judge. Gathering at the state legislature house in Raleigh, a representative from the NC Black Alliance told ABC 11 this is only the beginning. “This is the beginning of a rallying cry for support for Justice Earls.” Emancipate NC Executive Director Dawn Blagrove says she knows this is just another hidden agenda. “What we know is that the (judicial complaint) process is being bastardized in an effort to silence Black and brown people,” Blagrove said.

Earls is one of two Democrats left on the Republican-filled high court.

This isn’t the first time Earls has been targeted. In March, she faced a separate investigation after a complaint alleged she disclosed confidential information about current court matters. The complaint was later dismissed.

Irv Gotti Explains Why He Never Gave Artists Ownership Of Their Masters

Irv Gotti Explains Why He Never Gave Artists Ownership Of Their Masters

Irv Gotti has the mindset of most major record company owners when it comes to the artists signed to their labels. Capitalization is mostly at the helm, and that is why he and the other labels will not easily give their artists ownership of their master recordings.

While appearing on a recent episode of DJ Efn and N.O.R.E.’s popular podcast, “Drink Champs,” the Murder Inc. CEO shared why he was against giving artists who were signed to his label their masters, according to AfroTech. It basically boils down to simple mathematics—he made a lot of money by holding on to them.

“When people talk about the masters and they’re like, ‘Oh you should give your artists their masters.’ No, because that’s how I make my money,” Gotti told the co-hosts. “Like Ja, Ashanti, millions of dollars they make every year [from their shows]. I don’t get a dime of that. I don’t get one f**king penny of that.”

He shares that he doesn’t make the money the artists make, so why should he give up the only way he can make money off of them?

“The only thing that I have that I can sell to get me a check is those masters. And you wanna take that from me?”

He did acknowledge that Ja Rule is the only recording artist who has gotten a piece of the money from the masters he has sold. Ja was given a check that amounted to seven figures.

Last year, Gotti signed a “life-changing” deal worth $300 million. The deal obtained his 50% ownership stake of his masters to Iconoclast. Gotti will also receive funding for various film and television projects.

Gotti was responsible for creating and starting his own label, Murder Inc. Records while working with hip-hop heavyweights who sold millions of units at the start of their careers. His label housed legendary artists Ashanti, Ja Rule, Charli Baltimore, Lloyd, and Vita, to name a few. As an artist and repertoire executive, he worked with the likes of Jay-Z, DMX, Mic Geronimo, and other Def Jam artists.

New AI Tool May Help Startups Pitch Ideas To Investors

Promise Phelon, the managing partner of Growth Warrior Capital, is looking to help startup companies attract new investors, and she has a new tool to do just that.

According to Business Insider, Phelon has a background as an operator for marketing at tech companies such as JazzHR and TapInfluence. She works alongside her partner Ashley Pilipiszyn, who previously worked as a technical director, and is noted as one of OpenAI’s first employees back in 2018.

Phelon is less focused on sorting through pitches from business owners and “deciphering narratives” than she is on spending “more time meeting with founders and CEOs.” She believes these startups have the potential to “fundamentally change the way we work, earn, and build wealth,” according to the outlet. However, Phelon said the issue is the founders of the companies fail to receive recognition from venture capitalists because of their race or gender.

To help startups reach investors, Phelon began to wonder “what if we could take the most successful pitches from a VC’s perspective and from founder outcomes, like getting the valuation they wanted or getting funded quickly, and build a generative product that enable[s] you to do that quickly?”

This led to Elevo, an AI-powered, pitch decker builder created at Growth Warrior Capital. The AI tool was trained using pitch decks from multiple databases and startup decks from other VC companies. “You want the pitch to not tell the entire story, but you want it just to be enough so the VC says, ‘I understand it, it matches what we care about, and I’m intrigued,'” Phelon said.

Elevo’s waitlist launched on Thursday; however, Phelon said founders can register for first access in October when the product is released.

There are currently no plans to make financial gains from the AI pitch deck builder.

Louisiana Woman Arrested After Allegedly Stabbing Grandfather In Face

Local police in Louisiana arrested a woman who allegedly assaulted her grandfather after he and his wife confronted her about her personal hygiene.

According to ABC News, 22-year-old Carrington Harris was arrested by Louisiana police after she allegedly stabbed her grandfather in the face. They had been arguing about her hygiene, since she had not been showering on a regular basis. She was charged with one count of domestic battery abuse and one count of domestic battery abuse with a dangerous weapon.

A press release from the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office stated that Harris, who lives with her grandparents at the 3900 block of Fountainbleu Road in Keithville, had stabbed her grandfather after he and his wife asked her to shower, according to Sheriff Steve Prator. They were speaking to her about her lack of hygiene and when she started damaging property inside the house and then turned the power off from outside.

According to the press release, when her grandparents tried to restrain Harris, she escaped fand went to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. She allegedly used the knife to stab her grandfather. Harris then ran away from the house and hid in the woods.

Police officers found her several hours later, hiding behind a nearby home. She was then booked into the Caddo Correctional Center, where she is currently being held. No bond has been set in this case. Meanwhile, Harris’s grandfather was transported to the Willis-Knighton South and the Center for Women’s Health in Shreveport, LA by Caddo Parish Fire District 6. There has been no update on his condition.

Law and Crime reported that jail records revealed that Harris had been arrested in May and charged with one count of domestic abuse battery — no details on who was involved in that incident.

Cam’ron Thanks Nas for Including Him in Mass Appeal’s Hip-Hop 50th Live Concert

Hip-hop beefs are a normal thing in the industry and, as the years go by, some beefs still aren’t resolved. With the celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, the world has seen former enemies sharing stages and letting bygones be bygones. Harlem Dipset member and It Is What It Is co-founder, Cam’ron recently acknowledged Queenbridge rapper Nas for putting aside past differences and inviting him to the hip-hop concert, Mass Appeal’s Hip-Hop 50 Live that took place at Yankee Stadium earlier this month.

Earlier this week, the “Horse & Carriage” rapper took to Instagram to thank Nas and the company he owns, Mass Appeal, who also produced the epic hip-hop show at Yankee Stadium in the home of hip-hop, The Bronx.

The two had a beef dating back to the early 2000s, when Nas dissed Cam’ron during a Hot 97 interview. Cam’ron stated in earlier interviews that he never understood why Nas did so, but it was a beef nonetheless. Still, he gave Nas a shoutout for allowing him to be a part of this historic event.

“I wanna give a quick shoutout to that ni**a Nas real quick. Queensbridge Nas, yes, Escobar. A lot of people may not know, or if you do know, that was his event, him and his company’s event, Mass Appeal, at Yankee Stadium the other day.”

“For them to invite me and make me a part of the Hip-Hop 50 s**t that they put together, knowing the history we had in the past, that was really big of him to respect what I got going on as my contribution to hip-hop the last 25 years I’ve been doing it.”

“And with the past we had, whether it was beef or not beef or just music, whatever it is, I appreciate the invite from probably the greatest lyricist in our time, in our era. So I just wanna say I’m thankful for that, thank you Mass Appeal.”

NYPD Announces Plan To Use Drone Surveillance Ahead Of Caribbean J’Ouvert Labor Day Event

New York City, don’t be surprised to look up and see a drone crashing your party this Labor Day weekend.

The New York City Police Department announced new drone surveillance in response to large gathering complaints, The Associated Press reports. Using unmanned aircraft, NYPD will monitor all events, including private gatherings and the popular Caribbean carnival celebration J’Ouvert. The festival, which celebrates the end of slavery, brings out thousands of people—and a heavy police presence—to the streets of Brooklyn.

During a press conference, Assistant NYPD Commissioner Kaz Daughtry said the drones would respond to “non-priority and priority calls” past the parade route. If a caller states there’s a large crowd, a large party in a backyard, we’re going to be utilizing our assets to go up and go check on the party,” Daughtry said.

New York isn’t the only city beefing up its drone surveillance. A recent report from the American Civil Liberties Union shows close to 1,400 police departments across the country are using drones in some form or fashion. Federal regulations limit drones to flying within the operator’s line of sight. However, there are some exceptions. According to the data, drone usage will expand dramatically.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams is an avid supporter of drone usage, hoping to see more of it within the department, but privacy experts like the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project’s Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn think drones are a step too far. “One of the biggest concerns with the rush to roll out new forms of aerial surveillance is how few protections we have against seeing these cameras aimed at our backyards or even our bedrooms,” Cahn said.

“Clearly, flying a drone over a backyard barbecue is a step too far for many New Yorkers,” Cahn said.

Surveillance started on Aug. 31 and will last through the Labor Day holiday. According to The Washington Post, the flying drones can broadcast computer-generated voice messages or live messages from an identified NYPD commander. Daughtry pointed out that police drones safely cleared out thousands of parade-goers from Manhattan’s Washington Square Park after the Gay Pride parade in June.

Oprah Winfrey And Dwayne Johnson Team Up For $10 Million Maui Relief Fund

Families in the affected areas of Lahaina and Kula, Hawaii, will be eligible to receive $1,200 each month thanks to a $10 million relief fund started by Oprah Winfrey and Duane “The Rock” Johnson.

The billionaire media mogul teamed with the superstar actor to help families impacted by the devastating wildfires in Maui, Hawaii, with the launch of the People’s Fund of Maui, NBC News reports. The pair partnered up to donate $10 million toward the fund that goes to anyone 18 or older who lives in the affected area and was displaced by the wildfires.

With Winfrey owning a home in Maui and The Rock being of Samoan descent and spending part of his childhood in Hawaii, creating the fund was only right.

“I have been meeting with people throughout the community that were impacted by the fires over the last few weeks, asking what they most needed and how I could be of service,” Winfrey said.

“The main thing I’ve been hearing is their concern about how to move forward under the immense financial burden. The community has come together in so many wonderful ways, and my intention is to support those impacted as they determine what rebuilding looks like for them.”

The Rock appeared in a video with Winfrey announcing the fund, and shared his desire to aid families affected by the damaging wildfires.

“You want to take care of the greatest need of the people, and that’s giving them money,” Johnson said.

“We want to have this fund go for as long as you, America, choose to help us with this fund,” Winfrey added.

The fund was created one month after the wildfires broke out on the island of Maui, killing at least 115 people and leaving 388 others missing in the town of Lahaina.

Now thanks to Oprah and The Rock’s efforts, residents of Maui’s ravaged areas of Lahaina and Kula can receive $1,200 in assistance every month as they get back on their feet. All net proceeds from the fund will go to those directly impacted by the Maui wildfires.

Business Experts Expect A Big Boom In The Job Market In September

Business Experts Expect A Big Boom In The Job Market In September

Business experts have announced that September could produce a boom in the job market. In a recent study by Guy Berger, principal economist and head of macroeconomic trends at LinkedIn, the market is preparing for a “September surge,” defined by an exponential hiring increase following Labor Day.

The beginning of the year produced an alarming number of layoffs from studied companies, but a reprieve could likely be coming. Berger reported that the overall job market could stabilize following the unpredictable trends earlier this year.

Berger said, “Last year’s uptick stood out amid a disappointing trend, while this year it will be scrutinized for green shoots of hiring recovery.”

He cited some of LinkedIn’s data on why September’s hiring rates could be unnaturally high. Reportedly, “companies also add new team members in late summer and fall due to increased demand for seasonal employees.”

Payroll and HR software data have consistently shown a spike in hiring in “professional services sectors” in September and even October, just before the rates plummeted at the year’s end.

The rise and fall of the job market is described by Janet Mertens, vice president of research at HR consultancy The Josh Bersin Company, as cyclic.

“There are times during the year based on calendar years, fiscal years for companies, seasonal needs—especially in consumer products and retail—that you just see more hiring,” she said.

Before the surge, Mertens gave a list of essential tips on getting ready to be hired by Fast Company. She recommends updating your résumé and LinkedIn profiles to include any recent additions you may have to “always be job-ready.” In the meantime, as you’re waiting for applications and decisions, she told the outlet that you should use the time to keep building on your lacking or preexisting skills. Finally, she recommends contacting any networks you may already have and setting up job alerts attuned to opportunities on websites you’re looking for.

Another expert said, “Once you get those alerts, don’t underestimate the importance of being the first to apply.”

Beyoncé Reportedly Shopping ‘Renaissance’ Visual Album To Studios: ‘It’s Like An Art Film’

This a reminder! An official visual album for Beyoncé‘s Renaissance may be coming our way.

As the decorated Grammy-winning superstar closes out her Renaissance World Tour in the U.S., Beyoncé is gearing up for her Los Angeles show, where Hollywood execs will be present who have already seen parts of an alleged visual album the Beyhive has yet to see.

Insiders claim Bey’s Parkwood Entertainment is shopping a Renaissance visual album to studios and streaming services and has yet to finalize a taker, Above the Line reports. Directed by British filmmaker-photographer Nadia Lee Cohen, the visual album has an “artsy” theme that falls in line with Beyoncé’s other visual albums, Lemonade and Black Is King, but is much “weirder” than the latter, which won her an Emmy for the visual project she released as part of her role in Disney’s The Lion King.

“It’s a visual album movie, but it’s like an art film, and I’ve also heard it’s better than ‘Black Is King,’” the source said.

So far, Beyoncé has directed two visual albums. Her first was 2016’s Lemonade, which was released on Jay-Z‘s Tidal platform before joining HBO and earning four Emmy nominations. Beyoncé went on to write, direct, and executive produce her Black Is King visual album, which debuted on Disney+ on July 31, 2020, and won her an Emmy the following year.

Cohen was up for the job with her standout portfolio with renowned artists like Tyler, the Creator, A$AP Rocky, Katy Perry, and Kali Uchis, and major retail brands including Adidas, Balenciaga, Gucci, and Valentino.

It’s said the Renaissance visual album was first shopped about four to six months ago, but studios and streaming services passed. When asked why, the insider couldn’t give a definite answer but credited the possibility of budgeting issues and the film’s desirability.

“I’m guessing the price and lack of replay value for the casual viewer,” they said, before adding the possibility that “maybe Beyoncé didn’t like how it turned out? I don’t know…”

Considering the ongoing Hollywood strike, studios and streaming services could be hungry for content to please their viewers while actors and writers work toward a deal. That means an increased possibility of Beyoncé’s Renaissance visual album seeing the light of day.

Biracial Actress Tia Mowry Says She Identifies As A ‘Black Woman’

Tia Mowry can’t stress enough how much appreciation she has for her mother who she praises as a strong, Black woman.

During a recent episode of The Cool Mom Podcast, Mowry opened up about growing up biracial and how she identifies herself.

“As a mixed race woman, you sound like you identify more in one way or the other. Is that true or no?” host Lizzy Mattis asked the former Sister, Sister actress.

“Yeah,” Mowry responded. “I identify myself as a Black woman. She explained that her mother, Darlene, is a dark-skinned woman, and she praised her for being so strong throughout her life as she faced several challenges that came with her skin color.

“I feel like my mother is a strong woman,” Mowry said. “I have seen and felt her struggles as being a Black woman. And so to me—of course my dad is white—but I am an extension of my mother. So, yes, I am mixed race, but it’s how I identify myself. And I identify myself as a Black woman. That is how I’ve been viewed, how I’ve been seen.”

In 2020, Mowry posted a photo to Instagram posing with her mother and twin sister Tamera Mowry-Housley. The mom of two got candid with her followers about the privileges her father had as a white man compared to her mother. “Growing up #biracial, mom is Black and dad is white, it was very clear to me seeing the #privilege that my dad had as opposed to my #mother.,” Mowry wrote in a detailed caption.

Mowry gave her fans examples of the unfair experiences they were met with as a family.

“During our #sistersister days when traveling for work we would often fly first class. There were several times my mother was asked if she was in the right seat,” she wrote. She also reminisced on another moment when her family was purchasing their first home. “My mother walked in the house model with us asking for a brochure. A person had said the houses were sold out. My dad walked in and it was a different story,” Mowry added.

Mowry said her goal is to see change in the world.
