C.J. Wallace Responds to Nepotism Debate, Stresses The Importance of Black Generational Wealth

C.J. Wallace is tackling the nepotism debate by addressing the difference between favoritism for kids born into privilege and the importance of building generational wealth in the Black community.

As the son of the late rapper Notorious B.I.G. and singer Faith Evans, C.J. was thrust into stardom at an early age. He is one of the celebrated rapper’s two children, and the last child Biggie was able to conceive before his untimely death in 1997 at the age of 24.

The “Hypontize” rapper rose to fame in the 90s with songs that provided gritty depictions of his rough upbringing in Brooklyn, NY. Going from street hustler to a breakout rap superstar helped B.I.G., born Christopher Wallace, go from “ashy to classy,” as he infamously rapped in his 1997 single “Sky’s The Limit.”

In the wake of his passing, his two children, son C.J., 26, and daughter T’yanna Wallace,29, have carried on the late rapper’s legacy in the form of business and fashion with their lines Frank White and Notorious clothing.

While some would debate the two celebrity kids had business opportunities handed to them, thanks to their late father, C.J. spoke with BLACK ENTERPRISE about the significance of multigenerational wealth within Black families.

“It’s legacy. At the end of the day, we don’t have a lot of great examples of Black legacy,” he told BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“Or black wealth being built throughout generations. It’s one of those things that we have to make out ourselves. We have to be our own examples.”

C.J. was able to digest some of his late father’s most memorable TV moments on MTV’s “Family Legacy” which premiered on Paramount+ on April 25. The entrepreneur and actor, who played the child version of B.I.G. in the 2009 “Notorious” biopic, was able to relive moments he unfortunately never got to experience after losing his father when he was just shy of six months old.

For kids like C.J. and T’yanna Wallace, continuing their father’s legacy is of greater importance as they work to keep B.I.G.’s memory alive.

“Unfortunately, a lot of our examples get killed,” he explained. “They don’t get to see their wealth materialized through generations. It’s unfortunate.”

“It’s one of those things that we have to talk about. We have to tell our stories about it. My sister and I are living examples of that. It’s one of the things we do not talk about to each other. It’s a new thing now, just being able to be open and vulnerable about some of these things. I love it though. I think it’s beautiful.”

When it comes to being the offspring of two celebrities, C.J. acknowledges the responsibility he feels to combat stigmas about being a nepo baby.

“I would say the biggest misconception, there are a lot of them. I’m trying to break a lot of those stigmas myself,” he said. “One of them being that we don’t work for anything, or we don’t work hard.”

“I can speak for myself and my sister. I know. She’s one of the hardest young women I know,” he continued. “She also inspired me to get into fashion, pursue my own brand. For us, it’s always been about proving the haters wrong, proving the doubters wrong. Continuing the legacy is the most important thing for us.”

Black Workers Are Dying On The Job At A High Rate

April 28 is Workers Memorial Day. The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations released an annual report to spread awareness on the alarming rise in worker deaths, particularly among Black and Brown workers.

Death on the Job: The Toll of Neglect, a national and state-by-state profile of worker safety and health, not only includes data on the fatality rates in all 50 states, but also the most affected industries. The report is a call to action for funding and support needed for critical job safety oversight and enforcement. More progress is needed.

Though underreporting is widespread, AFL-CIO discovered the fatality rate for Black workers grew from 3.5 to 4.0 per 100,000 workers, and more than 650 died on the job, the highest number in nearly two decades.

Latin workers–on the other hand–have the greatest risk of dying on the job, with a fatality rate at 4.5 per 100,000 workers. This number has grown by 13 percent over the past decade. In 2021, the overwhelming majority who died were immigrants.

“Every American should be alarmed and outraged by the tragic data unearthed in this report,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler, according to a press release obtained by BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“It is unconscionable that in the wealthiest nation in the world, Black and Latino workers are facing the highest on-the-job fatality rates in nearly two decades. This report is more than a wake-up call, it is a call to action. No one should have to risk their lives for their livelihoods. There is no corporate cost-benefit analysis that should put human life and worker safety on the wrong side of the ledger,” Shuler said.

From hazardous working conditions to occupational diseases, this year’s AFL-CIO report also revealed that in 2021, 5,190 workers were killed on the job in the United States. Employers also reported nearly 3.2 million work-related injuries and illnesses.

“This report isn’t just about data points, it is about people. Every worker who died on the job represents another empty seat at a family’s kitchen table,” Schuler added.

In 2021, only 1,871 inspectors—900 at the federal level and 971 at the state— were accounted for the more than 10.8 million workplaces under the Occupational Safety and Health Act’s jurisdiction. This number equates to OSHA having the ability to inspect workplaces once every 190 years. Penalties for serious injuries and death of a worker are still too low.

With a goal to enforce worker safety, AFL-CIO laid out recommendations for strengthening federal agencies, including fully enforcing Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) resources, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) job safety and health protections.

“Employers should be held accountable for the working conditions on jobsites, and our lawmakers at every level must use their power to properly enforce the policies designed to protect us,” said AFL-CIO Safety and Health Director Rebecca Reindel, per the release.

DJ Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss’ Widow Allison Holker Acquires Half of His Future Royalties

The case is closed on DJ Stephen’ tWitch’ Boss’ widow Allison Holker’s spousal property petition.

A judge signed off on Holker’s request to be awarded half of the royalties Boss earned after their marriage union. According to Radar Online, Holker asked the court to order “property passing to the surviving spouse or surviving registered domestic partner without administration.”

Holker, a dancer, choreographer, and actress, claimed that her late husband owned “nothing of value” when they exchanged vows. “Existing assets were acquired during the marriage by virtue of the work, skills, and efforts of the parties,” she added.

According to the mother of three, “There were no written agreements between the parties that would have impacted the determination that the assets were community property.”

“During the marriage, the decedent had numerous projects and performed as a dancer, choreographer, actor, and producer, which resulted in rights to royalties as listed in Attachments 7a and 7b of the petition. The majority of these royalties were through Stephen Boss Productions. Petitioner has not located specific contracts related to these royalties, as they constitute a stream of income being paid to the decedent and the corporation. They will continue in the future as shows and productions are re-broadcast,” Holker told the judge.

“The funds used to establish the business and investment accounts came from the decedent’s work as a dancer, choreographer, actor, and producer during the marriage,” she added.

After considering all the presented evidence, the judge concluded that Holker provided sufficient documentation to grant the matter. “There being no objections, the Petition – Spousal/Domestic Partner Property (Initial) filed on 2/8/2023 by Petitioner(s) Allison Boss is granted, as prayed,” the ruling said.

Reportedly, the court awarded the 35-year-old widow half of Boss’s future royalties from Ellen, So You Think You Can Dance, and other projects, including Magic Mike. Other assets Holker petitioned for included half of his nearly $600K company, Stephen Boss Productions, and a cut of a reported Goldman Sachs investment account worth $25K.

Don Lemon Retains Former Colleague Chris Cuomo’s Entertainment Lawyer, Reportedly Owed $25M

Don Lemon Retains Former Colleague Chris Cuomo’s Entertainment Lawyer, Reportedly Owed $25M

Don Lemon isn’t going out without his money.

The former CNN host may be taking the network to court if they fail to pay what he is owed, according to his contract, which reportedly isn’t up. Lemon has lawyered up to claim the $25 million owed from the network.

To help secure his money, Lemon has hired high-powered Los Angeles entertainment attorney Bryan Freedman, co-founder of the law firm Freedman & Taitelman LLP, and lawyer for Lemon’s former CNN colleague, Chris Cuomo, who is seeking a $125 million payout from the network after getting the boot in 2021.

“Don was signed on a high seven-figure deal for the morning show last September, and is assured by CNN he will be paid the remainder of his contract, which runs until 2026,” an unnamed source said regarding Lemon’s deal. “He has retained lawyer Bryan Freedman to conclude this deal and also to investigate if Don could be eligible to further damages surrounding the conditions of his exit.”

CNN CEO Chris Licht released a memo to staff on April 24 saying, “Don will forever be a part of the CNN family, and we thank him for his contributions over the past 17 years. We wish him well and will be cheering him on in his future endeavors.”

Lemon said he was unaware the network would be terminating his position as an anchor. “I am stunned. After 17 years at CNN I would have thought someone in management would have had the decency to tell me directly,” Lemon said in his Twitter announcement of the surprising decision.

The former “CNN This Morning” anchor recently walked the red carpet and gave media outlets a sneak peek into his summer plans as he prepares to spend the season unbothered about work and surrounded by family on the beach.

Brittney Griner Says She’ll Never Hoop Overseas Again ‘Unless It’s to Represent My Country’

There is no more overseas travel in Brittney Griner’s future.

On April 27, the WNBA star spoke at a press conference for the first time since returning home from Russian detainment. According to ESPN, Griner said playing overseas was out of the question, except for traveling to play with the U.S. national team.

“I’m never going overseas to play again unless it’s to represent my country,” Griner said. “The whole reason a lot of us go over is the pay gap … to support our families, to support ourselves. So I don’t knock any player that wants to go overseas.

“I’m hoping that our league continues to grow. I hope a lot [more] companies start to invest in our craft,” she added.

As Griner prepares for May training camps, she continues her advocacy for other internationally detained Americans. The 32-year-old Houston native, who will be playing her 10th season with the Phoenix Mercury, is working closely with her WNBA team in partnership with the Bring Our Families Home organization. According to the organization, 54 Americans are wrongfully detained across seven countries; some have been away for over a decade.

Mercury fans will see a BOFH logo on the court during home games throughout the new season. A mural of Griner and other detainees will grace the outside of Footprint Center. To commit to the cause, the Phoenix organization will host families and friends of detainees with letter-writing stations available for fans to send messages to detainees and join in on the advocacy.

Griner said letters played a significant role throughout her 10-month detainment in Russia.

“It’s hard. You know I come from a military family,” Griner said. “I have that mindset … no one left behind. It hurts because no one should be in those conditions that I went through and they’re going through. I hope everyone continues to bring awareness and fight to bring home everyone.”

Historic Gee’s Bend Quilters Acknowledged By Alabama Senate

Quilting is a way of life for some families in Alabama.

Alabama State Sen. Robert Stewart recently invited quilters from the Gee’s Bend and Alberta areas to view custom quilts crafted by their ancestors and some of their own at the capitol.

According to Montgomery Advertiser, the artists’ crafts were acknowledged as part of the Department of Archives and History in the Alabama State House in Montgomery.

The Gee’s Bend tradition was established in the 1800s as a means of survival for the enslaved during the winter. “The quilting started as a necessity to keep you warm,” Claudia Pettway Charley said. “It wasn’t about art.” During the civil rights movement, the meaning of the quilts evolved as a symbol of economic empowerment during times of disenfranchisement.

The quilters traveled two hours from Wilcox County to the State House.

“To meet people that represent me, it’s a great honor,” Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy Founder Elaine Williams said. “You don’t have to be afraid to express yourself and let them know what you need and what you expect. They’re for us.”

Williams’ goal is to renovate the Bee into a museum for tourists, draw tourists to see the quilt,s and learn their history in Alabama. “For whatever reason, Gee’s Bend just got the attention of the world. Now, we have people come down and deem it as art,” Pettway Charley said. “We cannot stop quilting.”

“Tourism is a huge part of economic development,” Sen. Stewart said, whose ancestors are from the Gee’s Bend area. “When the Black Belt rises, this whole state will rise.” Stewart’s ties to the area have sparked his commitment to support infrastructure improvements and help drive attention to the area.

Reportedly, Gee’s Bend quilts have been featured on several occasions; during Paris Fashion Week 2022, in the Whitney Museum of American Art, in the Smithsonian, and sighted in HBO’s Gossip Girl reboot.

The First Medical Cannabis Dispensaries Open In Georgia After Years of Legal Battles

The First Medical Cannabis Dispensaries Open In Georgia After Years of Legal Battles

Things are looking up for patients in Georgia who want to relieve pain using cannabis without prescriptions.

After years of fighting in the state Capital, medical cannabis dispensaries have officially opened. Fox 5 reports the state commission issued licenses to dispense the medicine as parents of children fighting medical battles have been battling for almost a decade. Shannon Cloud, whose daughter lives with Dravet’s Syndrome, is elated that their hard work is getting results. “This is a huge step forward for patients,” Cloud said. “So many families have put so much into this fight to make this medicine available for our kids and all of our loved ones here in Georgia.”

Earlier this week, Georgia regulations authorized the commission to issue up to five dispensing licenses to each production licensee based on the number of registered patients. Dispensaries are set to be fully operational within 120 days after the license was issued, but first, they have to pass a pre-operational inspection.

One dispensary opening is Trulieve Cannabis Corp., a Florida-based company in Marietta. While this is its first location, they plan on opening three more dispensaries in Georgia this year in Columbus, Newnan, and Pooler. Trulieve CEO Kim Rivers says their low THC oil product can be sold to registered patients who suffer from severe seizures, Parkinson’s, and terminal cancer, something she says is a game changer. “It really is and can be a true game changer for folks in terms of quality of life,” Rivers said.

According to MJ Biz Daily, Georgia law states qualified patients can legally possess up to 20 fluid ounces of “low THC oil,” not exceeding 5 milligrams of THC.

Corey Lowe said her daughter used to suffer from severe seizures daily before she discovered medical marijuana. Lowe says victories like this are “why we slept at the Capitol.” “This is why we were knocking on lawmakers’ doors to get full access.”

Work remains to be done as flower edibles and vape cartridges are still banned in Georgia’s medical marijuana program.

Bishop T.D. Jakes Announces $1 Billion Partnership With Wells Fargo To Create Mixed-Income Housing Developments

Bishop T.D. Jakes Announces $1 Billion Partnership With Wells Fargo To Create Mixed-Income Housing Developments

Bishop T.D. Jakes is on a mission to keep Black people and other minority groups ahead of the game.

During an interview with CBS Mornings, Jakes announced a new partnership with Wells Fargo that creates communities for people at all different income levels. Wells Fargo and the T.D. Jakes Group has committed up to $1 billion to spearhead various projects to foster community development. Jakes feels the time to help minority groups is now. “The future looks very bleak, particularly for minorities,” Jakes said.

“Black people, brown people and also poor white people who are finding it difficult, workforce people, to find a job, to find opportunities to get housing, to get upward mobility.”

The first project will be a mixed-income housing and retail development on a former Army base outside Atlanta. With nearly 95 acres of property, it will sit next to Tyler Perry Studios.

The Potter’s House Church leader has some simple motivation behind this partnership. He feels creating mixed-income housing will bring better opportunities for future generations. Secondly, Jakes wants his legacy to make a positive impact on the lives of people who have been loyal and supportive. “The reason mixed-income housing is vitally important is because we tried low-income communities before, and they fall into the abyss and become ghettos,” Jakes said.

“Mixed-incomes have a much better result, safer, better schools, better opportunities, upward mobility.”

Wells Fargo CEO Charles Scharf told Dallas Innovates he’s excited to work with the T.D. Jakes Group and the partnership goes above and beyond “one-off capital investment. “We’re excited to collaborate with the T.D. Jakes Group as they play a key role in the transformation of communities that will have a lasting impact for generations to come,” Scharf said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing the meaningful difference we’ll make together in communities across the country.”
