Baltimore mayor, Brandon M. Scott

ELEVATING YOUR EXCELLENCE: Mayor Brandon M. Scott Stands On Business And Virtue

Scott leads with audacious vision and relentless execution

Brandon M. Scott, the 52nd and youngest mayor of Baltimore in over a century, made history by securing re-election in November 2024, becoming the first Baltimore mayor in two decades to win a second term.

His victory highlights his administration’s unwavering commitment to curbing gun violence, fostering youth development, rebuilding public trust in governance, and cultivating a more equitable Baltimore for all its residents.

During his inaugural term, Mayor Scott spearheaded significant advancements in public safety, notably achieving a historic 20% reduction in homicides in 2023.

As of Dec. 4, 2024, homicides were down an additional 25%, with nonfatal shootings decreasing by 33.8% for the year, building upon the previous year’s gains.

This progress is attributed to Baltimore’s first-ever Comprehensive Violence Prevention Plan, which expanded victim services to include gunshot victims and “indirect victims” — a first for the city. His administration also established local government re-entry programs, providing employment opportunities for incarcerated Baltimoreans before their release and crafting “Safe Return Plans” to aid in their successful societal reintegration.

Beyond direct intervention, Mayor Scott’s strategy includes activating 47 Coordinated Neighborhood Stabilization Responses (CNSRs) to mitigate retaliation, address trauma, and promote healing, notably in areas like Brooklyn Homes after the summer 2023 mass shooting. The Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement has awarded over 50 violence prevention contracts, totaling $16 million, to community organizations such as Challenge2Change, We Our Us, and the PEACE Team, empowering them to co-produce public safety across the city.

Six “Safe Streets” sites have achieved over 365 days without homicides in 2024 alone, including Belvedere, Woodbourne-McCabe, Park Heights, Penn North, Franklin Square, and Brooklyn.

The politician’s leadership has not merely been effective; it has been transformative, defying long-standing challenges with audacious vision and relentless execution.

His administration’s achievements in public safety and community investment are not just statistics; these achievements solidify the mayor’s reputation for facilitating change, while also demonstrating his understanding of the city’s pulse and the rare ability to translate bold aspirations into tangible, life-changing realities for Baltimoreans.

Growing up in Park Heights, Mayor Scott witnessed firsthand the profound effects of disinvestment in Baltimore’s communities and youth. This formative experience directly informed his administration’s priorities, leading to substantial investments in education and recreation.

His first term saw the completion of 11 new or renovated schools, including major high schools like Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and Baltimore City College, along with four new or renovated recreation centers.

The city also dedicated $100 million to previously stalled housing projects in underserved neighborhoods. In the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget, Baltimore City Public Schools received a record $477.1 million, marking a 47.7% increase over three years, serving 75,000 students.

Mayor Scott’s administration continues to be guided by five core pillars in his second term: building public safety, prioritizing youth, fostering clean and healthy communities, ensuring equitable neighborhood development, and responsible stewardship of city resources.

Before his mayoral tenure, Scott served for eight years on the Baltimore City Council, representing the 2nd District, and was subsequently unanimously elected City Council President in 2020. His initial election to the Council made him one of its youngest members, signaling the commencement of a dynamic political career.

Nationally, Mayor Scott has emerged as a respected political leader, known for his authentic and direct approach. He serves as co-chair of Mayors Against Illegal Guns and holds the position of 2nd vice president of the African American Mayors Association.

On reducing gun violence in the city, the mayor shared promising stats on his Instagram page.

“As of this morning, homicides are down 27.7% and nonfatal shootings are down 19.6% compared to this time last year. Our continued progress is the direct result of the comprehensive, evidence-based public safety strategy that we have implemented in partnership with residents.

“I want to acknowledge the leadership of our community violence intervention ecosystem, @baltimoremonse, the men and women of @baltimorepolicedepartment, our regional law enforcement agencies, and our partners in the State Attorney’s Office, U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the Office of the Attorney General. But our work is far from over. Sixty-eight lives lost to violence is 68 too many.”

He continued, “While we acknowledge the historic lows we are experiencing, we must simultaneously acknowledge that there is much more work to do and our success makes me commit even further to doing it.”

Organizations and elected officials, including the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention under former President Joe Biden, frequently seek his expertise in reducing violence. He previously chaired the National League of Cities’ Large Cities Council.

A proud Baltimorean and lifelong resident, Mayor Scott is an alumnus of MERVO High School and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. He resides in the Westfield neighborhood of Northeast Baltimore with his wife, Hana, and their children, Ceron, Charm, and Camden.

Beyond his civic duties, Mayor Scott’s profound impact and forward-thinking leadership have garnered national recognition. In 2023, he was deservedly named to Black Enterprise’s prestigious “40 Under 40” list in the Political and Social Impact category, a testament to his exceptional influence and unwavering dedication to advancing equity and progress within the Black community and beyond.

This esteemed honor further solidifies his standing as a visionary leader whose work is not only shaping Baltimore’s trajectory but also inspiring a new generation of public servants.

ACLU Encourages Trans Community To Update Passports Amid Court Victory Against Trump

Boston’s U.S. District Judge Julia Kobick blocked Trump's anti-trans order and instated a preliminary injunction to expand the April 2025 ruling.

After a federal judge blocked the Trump administration from refusing to issue passports to transgender and nonbinary Americans, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is encouraging members of the community to get their passports in order.

After taking office in January 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring the federal government to “recognize only two sexes, male and female,” and that “these sexes are not changeable.” Following the order, the Department of State stopped issuing passports for anything outside of the applicant’s birth-assigned sex.

However, Boston’s U.S. District Judge Julia Kobick blocked the order and recently issued a preliminary injunction to expand the ruling, according to USA Today

The ruling in Orr v. Trump results in passports with a sex designation aligning with one’s gender identity preference or with an “X” for sex designation will be available for all persons applying for a new passport or seeking to change the sex or name on a current passport. It also applies to people who were sent a previous passport with a sex designation listed with their birth-assigned sex after applying for a new one due to Trump’s anti-trans policies.

Several ACLU leaders, such as Senior Staff Attorney for the ACLU’s LGBTQ & HIV Project Li Nowlin-Sohl, call Judge Kobick’s ruling a needed victory. “This decision is a critical victory against discrimination and for equal justice under the law,” Nowlin-Sohl said, according to an announcement on the ACLU’s website.

“But it’s also a historic win in the fight against this administration’s efforts to drive transgender people out of public life. The State Department’s policy is a baseless barrier for transgender, nonbinary, and intersex Americans and denies them the dignity we all deserve.

Jessie Rossman, legal director at the ACLU of Massachusetts, highlights how the nonprofit organization will continue to fight against disparities faced by the trans and LGBTQ+ community beyond the historic win. “This decision acknowledges the immediate and profound negative impact that the Trump administration’s passport policy has on the ability of people across the country to travel for work, school, and family,” Rossman said.

“The Trump administration’s passport policy attacks the foundations of the right to privacy and the freedom for all people to live their lives safely and with dignity. We will continue to fight to stop this unlawful policy once and for all.”

The war against the trans community by way of passports is just one attempt by the Trump administration to roll back trans rights. In May 2025, the Department of Defense took measures to ban transgender people from serving in the military, a ruling that the Supreme Court supported.

Ever Heard Of Top Dawg Law Or Infinity Live? Meet The Man Behind The Radio Voice

John’s voice has caused curiosity and funny TikTok videos as people always wondered who he was as his commercials always draw attention.

The mystery of the voice behind some of radio’s most popular commercials has been solved.

Meet business owner Terrell John, also known as “Lucky.” John is the famous voice heard while promoting Top Dawg Law and Tuesday nights at Infinity Live on radio stations nationwide. His nickname was given to him because he says he wouldn’t be where he is without luck. “Everything bad that I went through needed to happen for me to get here,” John said, according to WSOC-TV.

John’s voice has sparked curiosity and led to funny TikTok videos, as people wondered who he was. His commercials for Top Dawg Law, a personal injury law firm in Charlotte, always capture attention. Comedian Kev On Stage created a sketch on how the commercials will keep you alert while behind the wheel.

Growing up, John says he was often teased about his voice, but the jokes are on those who teased him in the past, as he is now known as one of the most prolific voices in radio. It all started when he worked as a promoter in 2009 in Philadelphia and became annoyed at how radio stations produced his commercials. So he took matters into his own hands. “I tried it, and everybody was like, ‘Wow, your voice, your voice cuts through radio,’” John said.

“Nobody sees your vision but you; it’s not their vision for them to see.”

Fast forward to 2025, John produces close to 70 commercials each week, all from his home-based studio in the Queen City. He credits his success to the business owners he works with, saying they all trust him with the content. “Nobody tells me what to say,” John said. “They want me to be me, fluently, use my creative judgment, and they trust me to market their product.”

Outside of Top Dawg Law, his favorite business to work with may be a Charlotte-based club called Infinity Live, which he owns and operates. Soon, listeners may hear commercials for new businesses John is set to open, including a hair store and a car dealership in Columbia, South Carolina.

His famous voice doesn’t stop critics from expressing their viewpoints on his commercials. Some comments on social media admit to supporting him but turning the station off when his voiceovers are played. “Respect, but Imma turn the channel every time,” one listener said on Instagram with a crying laughing emoji. “Swear I want him to win, but if he could just move in silence, that would be great,” another social media user said.

Regardless of the haters, John wants to use his voice to inspire others to take a leap outside of their comfort zone, as you never know what the outcome can be. “Failure is how I learned, and I needed that failure to be here. Because if not, I wouldn’t have learned half the stuff that I know,” he said.

“So don’t quit. Work smarter and work harder than everybody else.”

Hitmaka Makes It Plain: Real Money Comes From Music ‘Licensing’ Not Streams

The music producer admits he makes more money through licensing his music instead of traditional means like streaming and publishing

Music producer Hitmaka appeared on a recent episode of the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast and spoke about making real, substantial money from licensing his music, as opposed to the little bit of money artists and producers make from streaming songs.

While talking to Wallo267 and Gillie the Kid, the producer mentioned that his songs have collectively streamed more than 20 billion times, and three of his records are approaching certified diamond status (10 million units sold). Ray J’s “Sexy Can I,” Big Sean’s “Bounce Back,” and A Boogie wit da Hoodie’s “Look Back at It” are the records vying for that status, yet the bulk of his money comes through music licensing.

He stated that the success of those aforementioned records and the many songs he’s produced hasn’t placed that much money in his pocket.

“I ain’t really seen no big bag off of that,” Hitmaka said.

The biggest song that he’s made money off of was “Bounce Back,” but not from publishing; it came from licensing the song and synchronization. He stated that he has made half a million dollars from that song due to the deal in place to play it at the Super Bowl. He schools people listening in and watching the podcast that the real money comes through placements in movies, television shows, commercials, soundtracks, video games, and anything that can run back residual income.

But, it doesn’t come through regular means through a record label, streaming platforms, or publishing checks.

He brings up the money that Lil Wayne made for the deal he had with FS1 when Skip Bayless hosted the Undisputed sports show on the network.

“The money machine gonna ring while he’s in his sleep,” he said.

The money is definitely in licensing one’s song and through synchronization, and Hitmaka is making sure that more musicians and producers know how they can make a great living off their work.

UK Government Is Educating Children On Misogyny And Incel Culture

The UK Department for Education is updating its curriculum to address the rise in misogynistic attitudes in its K-8 students.

The UK government has unveiled updated statutory guidance for Relationships, Sex, and Health Education (RSHE) aimed at addressing and dismantling misogynistic myths in schools.

This initiative seeks to protect children from harmful online influences, including misogynistic content, deepfake pornography, and unhealthy attitudes toward consent and power dynamics.

The guidance, issued July 15, emphasizes the importance of helping boys identify positive role models and challenge myths about women and relationships that are prevalent in online communities, such as the ‘manosphere’. Additionally, it introduces lessons on topics like incel culture, the impact of online content on sexual ethics, and the influence of AI-generated deepfakes. Secondary schools are now required to include these subjects in their curriculum.

The government statement cites data that indicates “misogynistic attitudes have become widespread among secondary school students.” Over a third (37%) of pupils aged 11-19 reported hearing comments in the past week that raised concerns about the safety of girls, and more than half (54%) witnessed comments they described as misogynistic.

New content for secondary schools includes:

  • Sexual ethics beyond consent, for example, teaching young people that yes doesn’t always mean yes, as factors like peer pressure should be taken into account
  • Staying safe in public spaces, to match staying safe online, so young people know how to increase their personal safety in public spaces, build confidence in trusting their instincts, and learn ways to seek help.
  • Financial exploitation
  • Positive conceptions of femininity and masculinity

In addition to addressing misogyny, the updated guidance expands the curriculum to include topics such as spiking, methanol poisoning, and a stronger focus on women’s health issues like endometriosis and fertility. It also aims to enhance students’ resilience and coping skills.

UK Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson emphasized the importance of fostering healthy attitudes from a young age, drawing from her experience managing a refuge for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

“I want our children to be equipped to defy the malign forces that exist online,” Phillipson stated.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader commitment to providing every school child access to a mental health professional and is part of the upcoming Violence Against Women and Girls strategy, set to be published in the autumn.

Stacey Abrams Sends A Message To Companies Rolling Back DEI Efforts: ‘It Costs You’

Stacey Abrams is warning companies that reversing DEI initiatives can carry significant financial consequences.

Stacey Abrams is cautioning companies about the short- and long-term effects of walking back their diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) commitments, warning that doing so risks breaking trust with entire communities.

The lawyer and former Georgia state representative spoke on a panel at NYU School of Law on July 11, where she addressed the growing number of companies rolling back DEI initiatives in response to executive orders from Donald Trump that target such programs in both the public and private sectors. Abrams, who now leads the DEI advocacy group America Pride Rises, emphasized that consumers are closely watching which companies are stepping away from their inclusion commitments, and it’ll come at a cost to those businesses.

“This notion that simply complying a little bit stops at the water’s edge is antithetical to every history we have ever written, and it costs you,” Abrams said, as reported by Fortune. “It may not cost you in the short term, but in the long term.”

Abrams noted that companies pulling back on DEI efforts aren’t going unnoticed, as consumers are responding with boycotts of major retailers like Target. This includes businesses that claim they’re scaling back solely to protect federal contracts under the Trump administration.

“I’m also less sympathetic to multi-billion dollar corporations that are concerned about losing a few contracts when they’re willing to sacrifice whole communities for that purpose,” Abrams said.

The former Georgia gubernatorial candidate also pointed to corporations that are staying committed to DEI efforts, such as Costco, where the board of directors unanimously urged shareholders to reject an anti-DEI proposal earlier this year. Shareholders followed suit, voting it down by a 98% margin. Following that move, analytics released in March showed a rise in foot traffic from Black and Hispanic shoppers at Costco, while other retailers like Target experienced a decline in in-store visits.

“Costco has always been grounded in this responsibility. Therefore, irrespective of the change, they never had to change their policies, they never had to promote who they were,” Abrams said. “They simply are. And we can see the distinction between Costco and other institutions.”

‘Cowboy Carter’ Concertgoers Injured In Alleged Stampede At MARTA Station While Leaving Show

MARTA has launched an investigation into if an escalator malfunction caused the matter.

Several attendees of Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” tour in Atlanta were injured while trying to leave the show through MARTA.

Nine concertgoers faced injuries during a “stampede” at the Vine City MARTA station, used by thousands to get to and from the concert’s venue. The incident occurred on July 14, the final night of Beyoncé’s four-show stint at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

A spokesperson for MARTA stated that the stampede occurred after a woman on the escalator began screaming and running after spotting a bug.

“The initial reports were that a woman was scared of an insect and screamed and ran away from it, and others panicked, not knowing what was happening,” a MARTA spokesperson said in a statement.

Her screams triggered more people on the escalator to run and shout, leading to a pile-up of people at the bottom. One woman also recalled fearing she would suffocate under all the people.

“He now is up under someone, I slide up under him, there’s somebody that comes behind me,” shared Amber Anderson. “I feared suffocation.”

Jaylen Black thought she would end her birthday with a memorable concert experience. Instead, she finished the evening at Grady Memorial Hospital.

“I was maybe three steps in, and the escalator completely free-falls, quickly down to the bottom, where we hit each other like bowling pins,” explained Black on her MARTA station experience. “I just kept telling myself, ‘I don’t want to die like this…I don’t want to die on my birthday.”

Unlike others, Black claims that the malfunction of the escalator is more likely to have caused the alleged stampede.

“I woke up from surgery a couple of hours ago. I’m seeing people covering it as some stampede. No, no one was pushing each other. The escalator malfunctioned,” said the recovering woman.

She added, “There was more of a hurry to get down. I want to be very clear: people weren’t pushing each other down the escalator. People were trying to get out of that area with haste.”

Despite her insistence, MARTA and its escalator manufacturer, Schindler, have yet to confirm if the escalator caused the commotion.

“We take the safety of the riding public seriously and are committed to working closely with MARTA, Vine City Station personnel, and local authorities to investigate and determine the cause of the incident fully,“ clarified Schindler in a statement.

”At this time, we have no verified information as to the cause, and it would be inappropriate to speculate.”

MARTA Safety has launched an investigation into the matter.
