BAFTA Judge Steps Down After ‘Utterly Unforgivable’ Tourette’s N-Word Controversy

A British Academy of Film and Television Arts judge has stepped down following backlash over how the academy handled the televised N-word incident.

A judge in the emerging talent category has stepped down from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) after raising concerns about how racial slurs were handled during the televised ceremony.

Jonte Richardson, an independent producer who has worked on the BET Awards, took to social media a day after the Feb. 22 ceremony to criticize the British Academy of Film and Television Arts for its “handling of the unfortunate Tourette’s N-word incident,” calling it “utterly unforgivable,” Deadline reported.

He also accused the organization of repeatedly failing to protect the dignity of its Black guests, members, and the wider creative community.

“I hope BAFTA leadership comprehends the damage they and the BBC have caused and takes the necessary steps to ensure their production staff is inclusive enough to prevent such an issue in the future,” Richardson wrote, as captured by Philip Lewis.

Richardson said stepping down was “unfortunate,” especially with what he called an exceptional lineup of Black creatives this year, including the team behind Just Act Normal, created by Janice Okoh. He added that the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has a “long history of systemic racism,” an issue he has previously raised when criticizing the British Film Institute over funding decisions affecting filmmakers of color.

“I cannot and will not contribute my time, energy and expertise to an organisation that has repeatedly failed to safeguard the dignity of its Black guests, members and the Black creative community,” he said.

The controversy stems from an incident involving Tourette syndrome advocate John Davidson, the subject of the film I Swear, who was heard shouting the N-word toward Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo during the ceremony.

Host Alan Cumming addressed it onstage, explaining that involuntary tics can be part of Tourette’s syndrome, while BAFTA later issued an apology and said it took “full responsibility,” noting Davidson has no control over his vocal outbursts. Davidson said he was “deeply mortified” if anyone interpreted his tics as intentional.

Lindo addressed the moment, adding that he and Jordan “did what we had to do” while presenting the best visual effects award to Avatar: Fire and Ash, but said he wished “someone from BAFTA spoke to us afterwards.”

Black Influencer With Tourette’s Syndrome Explains Reality Of ‘Tics’ As Celebs Slam BAFTA Scandal

The BAFTA controversy has left many divided on the intentions of the man who hurled the slur.

Shayla Amamiya, a Black influencer with Tourette’s syndrome, broke down the reality of tics as celebrities like Jamie Foxx called out the BAFTA controversy.

The influencer posted a reel giving deeper context behind John Davidson’s racially-charged tics at the British Film Academy Awards (BAFTA) Feb. 22. Davidson, an activist with Tourette’s syndrome, shouted the n-word as Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented on stage, leaving many confused and shocked by the ordeal.

Some began to deny Davidson’s claims that the n-word was an uncontrollable tic, stating that his illness does not excuse racism. While agreeing that the situation remains nuanced, with onlookers able to have complex feelings regarding the outburst, the influencer also shared another side.

“I’m not going to say that people can’t be offended by the fact that somebody said the n-word as a tic. However, it’s not something that somebody can control. It’s not something that somebody wants to say,” argued the influencer.

Despite the empathy for both sides, she also encouraged those offended to dive deeper into how the disorder often presents itself. The woman explained how many people with TS can also have coprolalia, a symptom of the disorder that includes shouting out obscene words.

“We must understand what coprolalia is. [It] causes involuntary swearing and inappropriate tics. This can include the N-word slurs, etc. I am a black person, and even I have the n-word tic and slurs as tics. This is something I don’t see many talk about because of situations like this.”

Even with her context, she still allowed people to express their disappointment with the unfortunate circumstances, especially the actors and audience members who were directly affected. While she emphasized that Jordan and Lindo have “the right” to feel upset, especially if they were unaware, she still called for education on how these tics come to life.

“Yes, it is a very unfortunate situation. Seeing so many people say that they would invoke violence against people with coprolalia if they can’t control their tics. That’s ableism…it’s something that we can’t control. [Its] aggression in the brain being triggered, and ultimately causing inappropriate tics.”

The entire issue sparked debate among Hollywood circles as well as the Black and disabled communities. Jamie Foxx also slammed Davidson for his “unacceptable” remarks, arguing that he meant to say the slur towards the Black actors.

While Foxx received pushback by disability activists for his harsh take on the situation, some Black and disabled commentators also sided with the actor, stating that Davidson’s words still had racist implications. However, given that TS is an uncontrollable neurological disorder, the situation is not as clear-cut as typical bouts of racisms.

The incident has left many divided on Davidson’s intentions, while others called for empathy and understanding for the unusual moment.

Nicki Minaj’s Social Media Engagement Inflated By Thousands Of Bots, Study Finds

Research finds swarms of bots are artificially inflating Nicki Minaj's right-leaning tweets.

A new report claims thousands of bots have amplified right-leaning tweets from Nicki Minaj on the Elon Musk-owned platform.

A new report has uncovered a sophisticated network of bots amplifying posts from the MAGA-aligned rapper on X, formerly known as Twitter, Politico reported. The analysis, conducted by disinformation-tracking firm Cyabra, identified more than 18,000 coordinated accounts allegedly boosting Minaj’s posts and manipulating the platform’s algorithm to expand their reach.

The analysis, which examined social media activity between Nov. 11 and Dec. 28, offers insight into how Minaj raked up millions of views on the social platform and positioned herself as a high-profile figure embraced by the White House.

In recent months, her sharp right-leaning critiques of figures like Gavin Newsom and Don Lemon have drawn millions of views and heavy amplification from far-right influencers on X. Now, the new report sheds light on where much of that engagement is originating.

”We don’t really see a lot of high volume, high impact orchestration of bad and fake actors within that intersection of the geopolitically driven and music culture,” said Dan Brahmy, the CEO and founder of Cyabra. “It is scarce in our field to see the combination of the bad and the fake online world with the entertainment world.”

How were the bots identified? Researchers said the inauthentic accounts stood out by repeatedly boosting Minaj’s posts with nearly identical praise, often using highly similar wording, especially under posts where genuine users were offering longer, more personalized criticism.

“Supportive comments generated by fake profiles were predominantly brief, repetitive, and low in semantic complexity, consisting largely of praising keywords and positive hashtags rather than original or substantive engagement,” the report found.

Researchers also flagged “longer, more detailed comments designed to appear organic” among the inauthentic activity surrounding the “Anaconda” rapper.

According to the report, the pattern points to a coordinated effort to blend into real conversations and boost the credibility and reach of the amplified posts.

FedEx Wants To Be Compensated For Trump’s Tariffs In New Lawsuit Following Supreme Court Ruling

FedEx Chief Customer Officer Brie Carere said the tariffs have been "particularly challenging for small exporters."

FedEx is demanding a refund from the Trump administration in a new lawsuit following the Supreme Court’s bombshell ruling that tariffs are unlawful, The New York Times reports.

Without listing an amount, the delivery service filed the suit in the U.S. Court of International Trade, seeking a refund from Customs and Border Protection, the collecting agency. Analysts like Cato Institute Economist Scott Lincicome say the refund demand is entirely expected, as the emergency tariffs imposed by President Trump at the start of his second term have raised roughly $175 billion for the U.S. government. “It was totally expected that they would do this, because there’s probably millions and millions of dollars on the line here for them,” Lincicome said.

While FedEx is the first to launch litigation since the ruling, it is expected that other large corporations will follow suit, demanding refunds. After lawyers working with the Trump administration said the government would comply with an order to give refunds if the tariffs were found to be illegal in a filed 2025 motion, the president’s tone changed after the Feb. 20 ruling.

Trump suggested that refunds would face legal battles.

FedEx moves 17 million packages per day across hundreds of countries. Since the implementation of tariffs, company executives warned that it would put a dent in the company’s overall earnings, according to NBC News. FedEx said when tariffs were in effect under the now-overturned International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the company imported goods from countries subject to the duties.

In September, before the IEEPA tariffs were rescinded, FedEx announced the hit could be $1 billion during fiscal year 2026. “From a customer perspective, it has been a very stressful period,” FedEx Chief Customer Officer Brie Carere said, adding that it has been “particularly challenging for small exporters.”

Other companies have filed lawsuits against the Trump administration seeking refunds of tariffs before the levies were ruled unlawful. In December 2025, Costco sought a full refund of the tariffs it had paid under IEEPA, claiming that about a third of its U.S. sales are from imported products.

Cosmetics brand Revlon, eyeglasses maker EssilorLuxottica, motorcycle manufacturer Kawasaki, canned foods seller Bumble Bee, Japanese auto supplier Yokohama Tire, and others filed similar suits in the past several months.

After the president labeled the Supreme Court ruling “terrible” and accused the justices who voted 6-3  against the policy of being “fools,” elected officials like avid Trump critics Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and California Gov. Gavin Newsom are also calling for compensation. “On behalf of the people of Illinois, I demand a refund of $1,700 for every family in Illinois,” Pritzker wrote in a letter.

“There are 5,105,448 households in my state, bringing the total damages you owe to $8,679,261,600.”

Zohran Mamdani

‘Out of His Goddamn Mind:’ Black NYC Homeowners Blast Zohran Mamdani Over Property Tax Hike Proposal

The tax increase would impact over three million homeowners living in NYC’s five boroughs, including those in Cambria Heights, a predominantly Black neighborhood, close to 90%.

Black homeowners in New York City are fuming over Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s threat to raise property taxes by roughly 10% — some saying it would force them out, The New York Post reported.

During Black History Month, Mamdani revealed a 9.5% property tax increase in his record $127 billion preliminary budget proposal for 2027. He pitched it as a “last resort” for raising revenue if Gov. Kathy Hochul refused to approve the income tax hike on New Yorkers making $1 million or more. However, Black homeowners feel the tax increase should not be at their expense.

Democratic City Council candidate and Cambria Heights, Queens, resident and activist James Johnson said Mamdani is out of his “goddamn mind” and is pushing a narrative that goes against his campaign promises.

“Mayor Zohran Mamdani, you are out of your goddamn mind.”

“You screamed affordability. You ran on it. You said affordability, affordability, affordability … And the first thing, not even three months into your administration, into your term. You wanna hit us with a 9.5% property tax increase?” Johnson said.

“Not happening.”

He continued to say there are other ways to go about this. “You’re saying if we don’t tax the rich, then I got to increase property taxes. There were many, many, many other options to make sure that things were affordable,” the 35-year-old said.

According to Spectrum News NY 1, the tax increase would affect over 3 million homeowners in NYC’s five boroughs, including those in Cambria Heights, a predominantly Black neighborhood with close to 90% of working-class residents living in single-family homes.

During a Feb. 19 “Hands Off Our Homes” rally, Johnson and other concerned residents highlighted that the Big Apple is already losing residents due to the rising cost of living and gentrification, and they feel this will only make matters worse. “The property taxes will displace us. It’ll push us out. We already have young people moving to North Carolina, to Atlanta, to Houston. This will hurt us,” Johnson said.

“And I just think the mayor could’ve gone about this a different way, and we don’t want to be a part of your negotiation tactics.”

Hochul seemingly agrees, telling Mamdani that she doesn’t see the need to raise taxes and wants the new mayor to go back to the drawing board.

Twenty percent of senior citizens living in the Queens neighborhood are wondering how they will afford rising property costs in the current economic climate. But residents like Oster Bryan, who has lived in Cambria Heights for 40 years, say residents are prepared to fight for what belongs to them. “New York state is horrible for home ownership, period,” Bryan said.

“So the fact that we’ve built a Black community in New York state of homeowners is really remarkable, and to lose it and to sit back idly while we lose it would be irresponsible of me.”

The first hurdle is to secure City Council approval, as the city’s budget is due June 30.

Diddy And Legal Team Reach Agreement In Fee Dispute Amid Assault Case

Summa LLP stated they were in default of at least $53,688.35 in legal fees

Sean “Diddy” Combs and his son, Christian, have finalized a settlement with the law firm they used, Summa LLP, which accused the pair of failing to pay fees for services rendered in a legal dispute.

According to TMZ, the law firm claimed that the father-and-son duo had not paid multiple invoices totaling over 100 attorney hours and 90 paralegal hours since being retained by Combs in March 2025. The work purportedly done was partially for a sexual assault lawsuit that was filed against Christian by a woman, Grace O’Marcaigh, who worked on a yacht that Diddy rented in December 2022. Summa LLP stated that they were in default of at least $53,688.35 in legal fees. Alejandro Barrientos, an attorney for the firm, confirmed to the media outlet that the suit they filed against the pair was dismissed and that the bill had been paid.

The lawsuit filed by O’Marcaigh claims that Christian sexually assaulted her on the yacht Diddy rented for a party. When the alleged victim filed the suit, she said that the younger Combs had allegedly done so while she was working on the vessel. She stated that when the yacht was rented, it had been “sold as a wholesome family excursion” but turned into a “hedonistic environment.”

The paperwork was filed on April 4, 2024, in Los Angeles County Superior Court. O’Marcaigh accuses Christian of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and infliction of emotional distress. Diddy is named in the suit for premises liability because he chartered the yacht and for aiding and abetting Christian in the alleged assault. She also claims that after she told the yacht captain of the alleged assault, he reportedly didn’t believe her and retaliated against her until she was terminated in May 2023.

She said the alleged assault has deeply affected her mental health as well as her professional and personal lives.

The former Bad Boy CEO is currently serving a prison sentence of four years and two months after a Manhattan jury found him not guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking charges, but guilty on two counts of transportation for prostitution in July 2025. He is presently appealing the sentence.

NYC Professor Under Fire After ‘Blatantly Racist’ Comment Caught On Hot Mic At Virtual Meeting

Friedman claims she used the botched reference to explain systemic racism.

A NYC professor may lose her position after she was caught making a “blatantly racist” comment at a virtual meeting.

Allyson Friedman, an associate professor of biology at Hunter College, took part in a virtual meeting of New York City public schools on Feb. 10. During the call, Friedman made public, offensive comments about Black students, all while an eighth-grader expressed her concerns about a potential school closure.

On the call, Friedman seemingly expressed her true thoughts on the students’ appeal while believing she was muted. In reality, the racist remarks were heard by all the participants in the viral hot mic moment. The New York Post re-shared the footage of the shocking incident on X.

“They’re too dumb to know they’re in a bad school,” expressed Friedman. “I mean f-ck… If you train a black person well enough, they’ll know to use the back. You don’t have to tell them anymore.”

The comment itself botched the words of Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Month, in his 1933 book The Mis-Education of the Negro.

The news outlet reported that the quote was initially mentioned by the Manhattan School District’s interim superintendent,  Reginald Higgins, earlier in the meeting.

The moment caught the attention of all attendees for its offensive nature. Two women even covered their mouths in horror. One man on the call finally shouted, stopping the NYC professor in her tracks.

“Allyson Friedman, what you’re saying is absolutely hearable here. You’ve got to stop,” stated the agitated attendee.

As the news went viral, calls for Friedman’s reprimand grew. City officials also became involved, with one deeming her comments as “blatantly racist.”

“I am deeply disturbed by the blatantly racist and harmful remarks made during the CEC3 [Community Education Council for School District 3] meeting…,” shared Councilwoman Rita Joseph.

Manhattan Borough President, Brad Hoylman Sigal, also added, “It is particularly despicable that these vile words were uttered while children were giving testimony at the meeting, exposing them to this hatred.”

Considering that she works in higher education, particularly at the diverse Manhattan CUNY school system, others urged her immediate firing from the position. However, Hunter College only confirmed that they would launch a review into the matter.

“Even as these remarks were made in the individual’s role as a private citizen and we understand that the district is conducting an investigation into the matter, Hunter College is reviewing the situation under the university’s applicable conduct and nondiscrimination policies,” the school wrote in a statement obtained by The Post.

However, this call to action may fall short, especially given her tenured role. People began to condemn Hunter College for failing to take swift action against the teacher for the discriminatory comment.

“She still isn’t fired,” questioned Queens Borough President, Donovan Richards.

Amid calls for her removal, Friedman spoke on the controversy in a new apology. She claimed to have used the words to explain systemic racism to a child in the room. However, she had accidentally unmuted her microphone during the private conversation.

The educator also emphasized that she does not hold those beliefs and did not mean to disrespect the young Black girl speaking. Despite this, she noted how her words still carried racist implications.

“Regardless of context, my words were wrong and caused real harm. I take full responsibility for their impact, and I am deeply sorry to the students, families, educators, and community members who were hurt,” expressed Friedman.

It remains unknown whether Hunter College will take the steps to remove Friedman.

Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao Agree To Rematch, Will Meet In September 2026

“I already fought and beat Manny once,” Mayweather said. “This time will be the same result.”

Right after announcing a professional return to the sport of boxing (after an exhibition match with “Iron” Mike Tyson in April), undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather will make his return with a rematch against Manny Pacquiao.

After reports of negotiations between Mayweather and Pacquiao brewing over the past several months, streaming giant Netflix confirmed that the match is taking place and will be carried by the network this fall, on Sept. 19 in Las Vegas.

This is Mayweather’s fourth time coming out of retirement and will be his first professional, sanctioned fight since he knocked out mixed martial arts legend Conor McGregor in 2017.

According to Netflix, the 47-year-old Pacquiao (62-8-3, with 39 knockouts) and the 49-year-old Mayweather (50-0, 27 by way of knockout) fought in the highest-grossing boxing match in history. When the fight took place on May 2, 2015, it broke pay-per-view and live-gate records. Mayweather emerged victorious with a unanimous decision and won the WBA, WBC, and WBO welterweight titles.

The legends will meet at Sphere, making this the first boxing match ever held at the venue.

Confidence has always been in Mayweather’s toolbox, and he is sure that he will be 51-0 after they meet in the boxing ring.

“I already fought and beat Manny once,” Mayweather said. “This time will be the same result.”

After there had been talks over the past nine years of the two meeting in the ring again, it’s finally time for the two fighters meet again to present another classic boxing match. Pacquiao, known as Pac Man, is also confident that Mayweather will regret not staying retired undefeated and intends to place a blemish on his perfect record.

“It’s been 11 years since Floyd and I gave the world what is still the biggest fight in boxing history,” Pacquiao says. “The fans have waited long enough. They deserve this rematch, which will be even bigger since it will be streamed live globally on Netflix. I want Floyd to be forever haunted by the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him. As always, I dedicate this fight to my fellow Filipinos around the world, and to bring glory to the Philippines.”

Howard, swim team

Howard University Makes History By Taking Home Men’s, Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships

For the women’s team, this is its first NEC title. For the men's team, this is its second straight championship, third in four years.

Howard University has captured both men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships for the Northeast Conference. The wins make Howard the standard-bearer for Black swimming programs.

The university excelled on Feb. 20, to take home the Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. For the women’s team, this is its first NEC title in program history. The men’s team won its second straight championship, the third in four years.

“This moment is about more than winning championships. It’s about showing young swimmers and divers — especially those who may not see themselves represented — that they belong in this sport and can excel at the highest level,” said Nic Askew, director of Swimming & Diving and Tennis, in a written statement.

The NEC Championships took place at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, Feb. 17-20.

Along with bringing home the team championships, individuals were also honored, including Zion Wilson for NEC Most Outstanding Diver, Zuilda “Zuzu” Nwaeze for NEC Most Outstanding Swimmer (the third straight year she has won this honor), and Courtenay Miller for NEC Diving Coach of the Year. Both teams also won the NEC Coaching Staff of the Year award.

History was made this past season with both women’s and men’s teams.

“Watching these teams come together and accomplish so much really has been history in the making,” Askew said. “Never before has a women’s team from an HBCU won a conference title, and never before has an HBCU won back-to-back swimming and diving conference titles. These wins speak volumes about the talent and competitive nature of our program and what is possible for student athletes considering attending an HBCU.”

Howard University is the only HBCU with a Division I swimming and diving team.

Fetty Wap

Fetty Wap Talks Life After Lockup After Getting GED, HVAC Certificates While Behind Bars

While having new academic certificates under his belt, Fetty Wap still has plans for new music.

Fetty Wap has turned over a new leaf, with the formerly incarcerated rapper wanting out of hip-hop for a more stable career.

Fetty Wap initially rose to fame for his 2015 breakout hit “Trap Queen” and subsequent songs that topped the charts in the late 2010s. However, his career came to a halt in 2021 after a federal indictment over conspiracy for drug distribution. The conviction led to a six-year prison sentence in May 2023.

Although Fetty Wap, real name Willie Junior Maxwell II, only served a few of those years, he learned a thing or two while behind bars.

Upon his release in January 2026, the rapper has kept a lower profile. However, Fetty Wap appeared on the Tamron Hall show to speak on his unusual journey to education.

He explained how he obtained his GED through an in-prison program, while also taking some courses to get his HVAC certification.

“I got my GED. I took a few HVAC courses. Oh, yeah, I do a few things,” he told Hall to applause from the audience.

He talked about his experience with fellow inmates as well. The father emphasized how seeing other men make an honest living inspired him.

“You meet a lot of people that … they had legitimate businesses and making a good amount of money. So I’m like, well, he making, like, rapper money. I’ma try that out.”

The famously one-eyed rapper, who has congenital glaucoma, also revealed new revelations about how he makes hits. He shared with the talk show host that he doesn’t need a pen to write his rhymes, letting the music flow through him instead. However, his time away has strengthened his mental vision, with Fetty Wap more determined than ever to do right.

“Staying focused when I get home, being a better father to my kids, being a better co-parent to the mother of my kids. Just do better with myself, you know. And try not to blame everybody else for my problems,” detailed the 34-year-old.

However, Fetty Wap won’t stay away from a studio for too long. He hinted at his long-awaited return to music as he gets his team back in action.

“Even as far as my music, the way I’m [going to] put the team together,” he added. ” The way I’m [going to] move this time…everything’s just going the way that I planned it to go.”

With community initiatives also underway, Fetty Wap hopes to return to the limelight soon as a new man.
