6 Reasons Why A Psilocybin Wellness Retreat May Be Right For You

Wellness is a natural part of travel. It helps to relax and recenter yourself while giving you a much-needed break from everyday life and responsibilities. But when was the last time you embarked on a travel adventure that was solely focused on your personal journey?

I went on my first wellness retreat this summer and walked away transformed and with more clarity and a better understanding of the healing on the other side of a mushroom trip. Yes, that’s right, I took part in a plant medicine experience courtesy of Sayulita Wellness Retreat, which included a guided psilocybin therapy session that was very intense but cathartic in all the right ways.

The thought of a mushroom trip might scare most people. But have you ever thought about the healing that’s on the other side of a guided plant medicine experience?

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic produced by more than 200 species of fungi, according to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation in Australia. Also known as magic mushrooms or shrooms, the psychedelic drug is naturally occurring and consumed for hallucinogenic effects.

Views and uses for psilocybin have evolved in the 50-plus years since the United Nation’s 1971 convention ruling claiming it had no medicinal purpose. On July 1, Australia made a big step toward recognizing the medicinal elements of psilocybin by allowing authorized psychiatrists to prescribe medicines containing psilocybin to people experiencing treatment-resistant depression, ADF.org reports.

Psilocybin has been around for centuries, with links to many Indigenous communities around the world for over 1,000 years. Scientists in the 1950s and 1960s were in the process of researching how psychedelics could possibly treat anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and alcohol dependence. Despite promising findings, by the late 1960s, the U.S. banned all psychedelics. Most of the world followed suit.

Now, we’re seeing a re-emergence of interest in the use of psychedelics, particularly those of psilocybin or magic mushrooms. Recent studies have found psilocybin to contain anti-depressant and anti-anxiety properties that can last for several months.

It can also be helpful in the treatment of nicotine and alcohol addictions and is considered to give patients a new perspective on life, leaving them with new emotional and information pathways.

Like most psychedelics, there are risks, as noted by the New York Times. Psilocybin can cause changes in mood, perception, and thoughts. It can also worsen symptoms of certain mental conditions like personality disorders and schizophrenia.

Research also shows that psychedelics might increase the chance of negative side effects for some physical health conditions, like heart and liver disease.

But that’s where a psilocybin retreat comes in since psychedelic therapy should always take place under professional supervision to reduce risks. After my experience at Sayulita Wellness Retreat in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, I gained a better understanding of just how transformative a guided mushroom trip could be for those who qualify. Because again…..it’s not for everybody.

For those interested, but still skeptical, here are six reasons why you might want to try a psilocybin wellness retreat.

1.) Healing/Letting Go

There is much healing on the other side of a psilocybin retreat. Depending on where you go, the program is typically modeled to help you set your intentions ahead of the mushroom therapy. At Sayulita, we had an intention-setting ceremony, did a series of meditation, yoga, and somatics, and maintained a clean eating diet ahead of the psilocybin session. This all aided in guiding us into a place of release and letting go.

As cited in studies by the National Institutes of Health, psilocybin contains healing properties that can change one’s outlook on life for the better. It can show you how to embrace or overcome your fears and live life more freely. So once we took the mushroom that took each participant on a different journey, everyone had their eyes opened in new life-changing ways.

2.) Third Eye Awakening

Psilocybin is believed to open the pineal gland to see the subtle plans of reality and observe auras, chakras, and spiritual entities around us. A 2014 study from Human Brain Mapping found that those who took psilocybin activated parts of the brain that are typically only active when sleeping or dreaming. There’s no guarantee about what you’ll see or experience during a mushroom trip, but you’ll most likely see something that’ll open you up in new transformative ways.

3.) Connection to Your Ancestors/Indigenous Healing Treatment

While many psilocybin retreats are in Mexico, like the one I attended, the practice isn’t exclusive to Native and Latin Americas. Rock paintings found in North Africa have led historians to believe the use of magic mushrooms in the country dates back as far back as 9000 B.C. While the use of psychedelics has long been credited to Mayan, Aztec, and Asian cultures, its use in Africa was deemed negative under stereotypes placed on Voodoo culture.

But researchers like UK-based educator Darren Springer are dedicated to informing the masses on the forgotten history of psychedelics in Africa, as he told Double Mind Mag. During my mushroom trip at Sayulita, I was in an astral state where I vividly saw Native American ancestors within the trees surrounding the compound. While it might sound crazy to many, the visions were real and sparked my interest in how our indigenous ancestors might be all around us through nature, bloodline, and spirit.

4.) Guided Experience

As mentioned before, if you’re going to do a psilocybin therapy session, you should do it right. Get with the right professionals, shamans, and teams who work together to guide you on a safe and healthy magic mushroom trip. Johns Hopkins Medicine has conducted research about the importance of consuming psilocybin in regulated spaces facilitated by a medical team over a series of guided sessions. So choosing an accredited psilocybin retreat facility, like Sayulita, is of great significance to your overall health, well-being, and the experience you’ll walk away with.

5.) Alternative to Pharmaceuticals & Traditional Therapy

Studies from the National Institutes of Health have found that psilocybin therapy has shown encouraging results in the treatment of substance addiction, which is notoriously difficult to treat. They also found psilocybin can aid in the treatment of major depression, cancer or end-of-life mood disorders, and in reducing the burden of many psychiatric conditions.

6.) Wellness Vacation

Ultimately, a psilocybin retreat is another form of wellness vacation that offers all the scenery, relaxation, and experience a typical getaway provides. At Sayulita, we enjoyed a beautiful private beach, infinity pools with captivating views, hikes, and a beachfront horseback ride through the jungle,. After going on a mushroom trip, you’ll have so many thoughts to process and most credible retreats will provide you with a post-psilocybin therapy session experience to guide you along your come down.

So if you’re thinking about trying psilocybin, do your research, and pick the right accredited resort that will safely guide you along your journey to higher self-awareness. There’s only enlightenment waiting for you on the other side, and maybe an ancestor or two.

Derrick Jaxn Attributes Cheating On Ex-Wife Da’Naia To Feeling ‘Rejected’

Disgraced relationship guru Derrick Jaxn is opening up about the infidelity that led to his divorce from Da’Naia Jackson.

Jaxn appeared on the Dear Future Wifey podcast on Wednesday, August 16, where he spoke candidly about the triggers that fueled the disconnect between him and his ex-wife. In a clip shared by The Shade Room, the social media star explained how he only shows “aggressive energy” toward women during moments of intimacy and found himself feeling “rejected” by his wife when he would come on to her.

“I don’t have aggressive energy toward women except in intimacy,” Jaxn explained “How I would express my affection often times was aggressive.”

Noting examples of how he would pick his wife up or caress her from behind, Jaxn recalled how his actions would cause Jackson to “really really shut down.” Her response would make him feel “rejected,” something he claims he had never felt before.

As a result of feeling rejected by his wife, Jaxn opted for the “safer” option, which was entertaining other women.

“What felt safer was to go out and at least have friendships with other girls,” he admitted. “Just the conversations felt like acceptance again.”

He went on to confess that his “loose boundaries turned into no boundaries,” and his friendships with other women led to infidelity. Jaxn acknowledged his pride and his continued pursuit of other women or partying whenever his wife would shut down.

However, host Laterras Whitfield recalled Jackson’s past appearance on the podcast where she revealed the sexual assault she experienced two weeks before marrying Jaxn. The divorcee seemingly agreed and explained the “repetitive pattern” where both of their triggers were being set off and further fueled the disconnect in their marriage.

“I didn’t know certain forms of affection that felt natural to me, just felt scary for her,” Jaxn said.

Online commenters blasted the relationship guru persona he promoted online while cheating on his wife.

“How this man gonna tell men how to be men when he couldn’t even make his own wife feel comfortable,” one user wrote.

“Ladies, take note this is narcissism. There is not a shred of accountability in any of what he said …..it literally all her fault in his mind,” added someone else.

Jaxn announced his divorce from Jackson in December 2022. She has since gone on to build her own brand and speak candidly about her public split.

Chad Ochocinco Johnson

Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson Admits McDonald’s Was All He Could ‘Afford’ As A Kid, Now Owns 3 Franchises

There are moments in our childhood that can help shape things in adulthood. For former NFL player Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, one of the places he frequented due to the low cost of the menu items was McDonald’s. Now, as an adult, he owns three franchises.

According to AfroTech, the Dancing with the Stars alum owns three McDonald’s franchises in Cincinnati, Indiana, and Miami. His story about his love for McDonald’s is rooted in the affordability of the fast food restaurant. He often speaks of his relationship with the restaurant in interviews. He also discloses that he feels that due to his McDonald’s “diet,” he never suffered any injuries as a child.

“When I was a kid, burgers were 50 cents,” he told GQ Sports. “Fries were 20 cents. Therefore, it was all we could afford when I was a kid. You know what happened when I was little, too when I ate McDonald’s? I never got hurt. You know what else I did as a kid when I ate McDonald’s? I dominated everything that I did, even in kindergarten.”

He may be crediting McDonald’s with all his athletic success.

Speaking of his success, Johnson, who played for the Cincinnati Bengals during his NFL career, is slated to be inducted into the Ring of Honor in the fall of 2023 during the upcoming football season, according to Sports Illustrated. He will be joined by Boomer Esiason, Paul Brown, Anthony Munoz, Ken Anderson, Ken Riley, Willie Anderson, and Isaac Curtis.

Johnson is the Bengals’ all-time leading receiver in receptions (751), yards (10,783), and touchdowns (66). The honors will occur during the Bengals’ matchup against the Los Angeles Rams at Paycor Stadium during Week 4 of the NFL season.

He played for Cincinnati from 2001-10, making six Pro Bowls and being named a first-team All-Pro twice during his 10 years with the Bengals.

Cristal Starling Granted Day In Court To Get $8K Stolen From Her During Police Raid

Cristal Starling Granted Day In Court To Get $8K Stolen From Her During Police Raid

Cristal Starling, a food cart owner from Rochester, New York, is finally getting her day in court.

In April 2022, it was reported that Starling had $8,040 seized by the police after they suspected her then-boyfriend was dealing drugs. Since being acquitted, Starling has been fighting to get her money back—saved to purchase a food truck. Now, thanks to a federal appeals court, her case is being bought back to life.

The Institute for Justice, a public interest law firm representing the business owner, found a loophole against civil asset forfeiture, a ruling that allows law enforcement to seize property suspected of being connected to criminal activity without charging the owner with a crime, Reason reports. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled that a lower district court made an error when it entered a default judgment against Starling after she missed one of the filing deadlines to challenge the seizure.

The business owner also had two cars seized and returned to her after being forced to use a rental car. But now, Starling will be able to contest the seizure in court. “I’m excited and looking forward to fighting this,” she said, according to a press release. “And I’m happy that I was able to push through and persevere through all these filings, all this paper, and all these court proceedings. Nobody should have to fight this hard just to keep what’s theirs.”

Civil forfeiture is often frowned upon by civil liberties groups, but it is very rare for them to be read in a federal circuit court opinion. “The court recognized what has always been abundantly clear about civil forfeiture: allowing police to pocket the money they take from people who have never been charged with a crime encourages police to take more money from innocent people,” attorney Seth Young said.

The law firm’s President and Chief Counsel, Scott Bullock, thinks it’s time for the system to eliminate civil forfeiture. “Cristal is not alone in having her due process rights stripped by the unjust civil forfeiture process,” Bullock said.

“It’s time to end civil forfeiture nationwide.”

BLK & Bold

BLK & Bold Named One Of America’s Fastest-Growing Companies

BLK & Bold, a specialty tea and coffee manufacturer, has been named one of the fastest-growing private businesses in the U.S. by Inc.

As reported by Business Wire, they are ranked number 61 in Inc.’s listing of the 5,000 fastest growing businesses in America.

BLK & Bold is the first and only Black-owned coffee company that is distributed nationally. Rod Johnson, one of the co-founders and the chief values officer of the company, reflected on what this accomplishment meant. “Being recognized on the Inc. 5000 list is a true honor and a reflection of our team’s hard work, our commitment to our community, and the power of purpose-driven business,” Johnson told Business Wire. “It feels good to continue to grow without wavering on who we are; we continue to show up with value to our community and ourselves, and that means everything.”

Johnson and Pernell Cezar founded the company in 2018 with an emphasis on giving back to at-risk kids. According to Inc., Cezar was inspired while he visited a high-end coffee shop. The idea was simple – he wanted to allow everyday people to have access to high-quality coffee at an affordable price point. Cezar also wanted to donate 5% of the proceeds to programs designed to help underserved children. The pair started small, and because Black businesses are not always given the same access to capital as other businesses, they had to get creative.

The pair pooled together $22,000 of what Cezar called “bonus check money” and used that to get roasters and beans. Slowly, they made progress from operating out of Cezar’s garage to subletting space in a brewery to getting capital in the form of a small business loan from a bank in Iowa.

It wasn’t until 2020 that they were able to get featured in Target, a major opportunity to increase the brand’s visibility. This was a direct result of the 2020 George Floyd protests that engulfed the nation. As a result of calls for corporations to support Black businesses, the Minneapolis-based retail chain stepped up to support small Black businesses, pledging to spend $2 billion with Black businesses. In addition to being placed in Target, BLK & Bold participated in Amazon’s Black Business Accelerator program, which allowed their business to spread even faster.

BLK & Bold is now brand partners with the NBA, NFL, Keurig, and Marvel, in addition to being carried in 11,000 retail stores across the country. Cezar is not content for the company to rest on its laurels; he plans for them to eventually open up physical locations to sell their products directly to consumers.

Cezar is also committed to creating social change through the pair’s coffee brand, as he told Yahoo, “It is and will always be important for us to address socio-economic disparities, not only in dialogue but also by creating a funnel to resources. We will continue to act as a leader, not only in spaces we’ve cultivated, but in partnership. We must continue to invest in diverse voices to solve issues within our communities. This is one of many ways to make a difference.”

Racial Brain, Smithsonian

The Smithsonian’s ‘Racial Brain’ Collection Subject Of An Investigative Series

For decades, the Smithsonian has had a collection of human brains. Hidden from public view, the collection contains more than 200 brains; most were taken from Indigenous and Black people without consent. The Smithsonian collection of “racial brains” reveals the museum’s quest to study and compare certain elements, such as cognitive abilities, based on race.

The Washington Post has launched an investigative series into the grisly collection. It has uncovered the process where the national museum authorized and funded the removal of the brains of minorities from morgues, burial grounds, and hospitals. While most of the organs were taken in the 1940s, the Smithsonian acquired these body parts without the consent of the deceased families. The process exploited individuals of marginalized and/or indigenous backgrounds, taking advantage of this lack of agency and disenfranchisement for scientific pursuits.

According to the Post, even though the collection became public knowledge, the museum has not prioritized returning the stolen organs to their rightful burial sites or families. The news outlet found that only four brains have been returned, as a formal request is required to begin the process.

Federal officials have ordered that Native Americans whose deceased family members’ brains were used have to be notified, leaving the many Black and other ethnic participants’ families to make inquiries on their own.

To address the looming controversy, Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III, the first Black person to lead the institute, issued a statement apologizing on behalf of the museum for its conduct in the organ retrieval process.

“I know that so much of this has been based on racist attitudes, that these brains were really people of color to demonstrate the superiority of White brains, so I understand that is just really unconscionable,” expressed Bunch. “And I think it’s important for me as a historian to say that all the remains, all the brains, need to be returned if possible, [and] treated in the best possible way.”

New Orleans, Arrested

12-Year-Old Wrongfully Detained By Lansing Police Speaks Out, Left ‘Shocked And Frightened’

The 12-year-old boy who was wrongfully detained by police while taking out the trash is speaking out about the “traumatic” experience.

Tashawn Bernard appeared on “Good Morning America” on Monday, August 15 with his parents and family attorney to recall his wrongful detainment last week after his father asked him to take out the trash.

“When it happened, I was really, like, shocked and frightened about like the situation, and how it happened,” Tashawn shared.

“This has been a very traumatic and emotional experience for him and his entire family,” family attorney Rico Neal told “GMA.”

The middle school student was taking out the trash in his apartment complex when he was surrounded by police and handcuffed in what turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. Tashawn’s father, Michael Bernard, says he asked his son to take out the trash and became concerned when his son didn’t return.

Upon looking out the window, he saw his son encircled by a swarm of cops.

“I saw police around him, so I dropped what I had in my hand … and rushed downstairs,” Bernard told “GMA.” “So I say, ‘why you have my son in handcuffs? What’s the problem?'”

Now viral video shows the 12-year-old in handcuffs and placed in the back of a police vehicle before cops realized their mistake. Many have expressed their outrage at the latest example of mistaken identity against a Black person.

The Lansing police department released a statement saying cops were investigating a “string of Kia thefts, including a specific one reported on the 3600 block of W. Jolly Road with multiple suspects.” A witness to the robbery claimed the suspect was wearing “neon shorts and a white shirt” when they were spotted by an officer and ran into the apartment complex.

But Neal says there’s no way Tashawn should have been mixed up with the criminal at large since he had on a “light gray or a light bluish” shirt.

Lansing Police Department Chief Ellery Sosebee and Lansing Mayor Andy Schor have both issued public apologies to the Bernard family. But Michael is seeking more than just wordplay.

“I want justice for my son,” Bernard said, adding that “in this time and era in America, I am still scared for anything to happen to my son.”

“This has been a traumatic experience for Tashawn and his family,” Neal said. “This has been an experience that Tashawn and his family will live with for the rest of his life.”
