Zoë Kravitz Is A Black Woman in Hollywood Who Refuses To Remove Her Signature Braids

Zoë Kravitz is getting real about her experience as a Black woman in Hollywood.

The 34-year-old “Batman” actress has been one of the industry’s coolest “it” girls for the last decade. Though her enviable family tree as the daughter of actress Lisa Bonet and rockstar Lenny Kravitz has opened many doors for her, she still hasn’t come through her journey unscathed. In an interview with Elle, the enigmatic talent opened up about everything from what she feels Hollywood is finally getting right to discriminatory practices regarding how Black women wear their hair.

The latter of which Kravitz says she makes no allowances for.

“[Pre-George Floyd], I was constantly just fighting [about my hair] and being asked to change it. I would do a shoot, and this still happens to be honest, where they’ll say, ‘Can you take your braids out? Because we want to do something else’,” she said about her signature style that takes up to 15 hours to create. “And I always reply, ‘Pretend this is the way it grows out of my head. You don’t ask people that have long blonde hair to change their hair every time they do a shoot.’ It’s interesting that I’m often asked to pop them braids out. Do you know how long this takes? And it’s also the way I wear my hair.”

Though Kravitz understands there is still much ground to be covered for true equality in Hollywood, she sees a path forward as intentional attention has been paid to diversity in recent years. “I think there’s more of a consciousness around making sure that Black women, Black people, get to be a part of stories that go beyond stories about being Black, and then also finding ways to bring that truth into a story,” she said. When it comes to being authentic, Kravitz says it’s not just a choice for her but essential to feeling good about herself. “I have moments where I stray, or I do something that’s not authentically me. And I immediately feel it, and it feels icky”, she said.

Rapper Jim Jones Is ‘Ballin’ With New adidas Harlem-Inspired Sneaker Line

Dipset group member Jim Jones has always represented Harlem, even before he was “ballin’” on his single, “We Fly High.” Now, he gets to represent the neighborhood while stepping into the latest adidas HRLM sneaker.

In a recent Instagram post, the Harlem native is seen in a video clip reminiscing about buying sneakers when he was younger through the streets of Harlem. He is also showcasing the HRLM sneaker by adidasOriginals.

According to Sneaker News, European sneaker retailer, Sneakersnstuff collaborated with adidas to bring back the adidas HRLM that originally debuted in the 1980s. Harlem’s Jones has been brought in to represent the latest update of the 80s classic.

In an exclusive conversation with BLACK ENTERPRISE, the Dipset group member talked about how the collaboration happened and what he would like to take place when all goes well with sales for adidas HARLM.

“There’s a store called SNS (Sneakersnstuff), they may be a London brand, and they have a store in New York City, and I’ve been dealing with them for a few years now. I did another initiative with them a couple of years ago, and now they actually did the collaboration with adidas or the HARLM sneaker.”

Jones explained that the adidas HARLM sneaker was lost inside the brand archives, and they could revive it. Because Jones is infamously known for holding Harlem down, they felt he was the perfect choice to represent the latest version of the shoe. He said he is very “grateful to be a part of the whole campaign.”

He continued, “For me, being connected with adidas and doing this whole campaign is pretty dope; you know, it’s very personal when it comes to Harlem. So, this is a great thing. Sneakers are a big part of Harlem culture. If you know anything about Harlem, sneakers are one of the biggest things that went on then and even today.”

And although it hasn’t officially gone on sale yet, Jones says it’s already creating a buzz.

“Well, the response has been crazy so far, having a lot of calls; people actually think it’s my sneaker, like the Jim Jones HARLM Sneaker, which it’s not MY sneaker, but it’s definitely a dope sneaker.”

With the excitement around the sneaker, Jones hopes it will lead to other opportunities, if not with adidas, then with other companies.

“I mean, I’m hoping that that happens. We can continue to do something like this, and I’m hoping I could get a great deal with this and see what else we can do when it comes to Jim Jones and the sneaker business.”

Yet, Jones has his eyes on building an empire under the Jim Jones banner in the very near future.

“There’s so many things that I plan to do going forward as an entrepreneur, everybody knows that I started my career with music, and I’ve done so many other things. Right now, moving into news, content, and television, so people will start to see a lot about capital cash, keep that in the back of your head because you’re gonna start to see visuals soon.”

According to the Sneakersnstuff website, the adidas HRLM will be released exclusively at all SNS locations except SNS LA. Jones’ influence is widely felt in hip-hop, and this collaboration further solidifies his status.

Oprah Winfrey Can’t Be Put In A Box But Will She Leave Media To Enter Politics?

Oprah Winfrey Can’t Be Put In A Box But Will She Leave Media To Enter Politics?

Since California Sen. Dianne Feinstein announced she won’t seek reelection in 2024, there has been speculation about who will replace her. Speculation has arisen that our favorite, Oprah Winfrey, may be a possible replacement.

Since Feinstein, 89, chose to retire, several names have been thrown into the ring as her rumored replacement, including Oprah Winfrey, the Associated Press reports. It may not be so far-fetched, as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) promised in 2021 to have a Black woman sit in Feinstein’s seat if it became available after then-Senator Kamala Harris resigned to become vice president; Newsom faced pressure to have another Black woman sit in Harris’ seat.

Strategists and other Democratic leaders like Kerman Maddox and assembly member Lori Wilson feel Newsom should stay committed to that promise. “He made the commitment and I do not believe there is any wiggle room for the governor not to honor his commitment,” Maddox said. “Newsom must honor his promise to appoint a Black woman if Feinstein resigns,” Wilson agreed. “I trust him at his word. We currently have zero Black women in the Senate, so if the opportunity becomes available the governor must act to help remedy this lack of representation.”

If Newsom can’t pull Winfrey from the spotlight, Rep. Barbara Lee may be at the forefront, according to Fox News. Lee is actually running for the seat against fellow Democratic California House politicians, Reps. Adam Schiff and Katie Porter.

Winfrey has had her name thrown in the political spectrum numerous times, most recently in 2020 with a rumor she was running for the Oval Office. However, she openly put those rumors to rest with a speech given while campaigning for former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams in 2018. “I don’t want to run,” Winfrey said. “I am not trying to test any waters, don’t want to go in those waters.”

A popular jazz bassist and composer who performed with Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, and Duke Ellington, Lee, and his acclaimed bass ensemble, were known for their mellow sounds that paid tribute to the true essence of the genre. His work made him a favorite among music stars, opening the door for him to appear on over 250 albums throughout his illustrious career.

He’d also go on to score the first four feature films for Academy Award-winning director Spike Lee.

Lee worked with his son on She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do The Right Thing, and on the poignant look at the trials and hardships of a Black jazz musician in 1990s Mo Betta Blues. According to The New York Times, Spike Lee drew on the experiences of his father and the men he worked with to scribe the cult classic. “Everything I know about jazz I got from my father,” he said in an interview. “I saw his integrity, how he was not going to play just any kind of music, no matter how much money he could make.” There were other homages to Lee in the filmmaker’s work, including the 1994 Crooklyn—written by daughter Joie Susannah Lee and son Cinqué Lee and produced by Spike Lee- a biographical look at the family’s life.

Bill and Spike Lee also shared a brotherhood as both men graduated from Morehouse College. However, they ceased collaborating in the early 1990s following a dispute over personal matters. Though it’s unclear whether the two fully repaired their relationship, Spike Lee confirmed the passing of his father in a series of heartfelt Instagram posts paying honor to his legacy.

Shaq Gets Served A Second Time in FTX Lawsuit This Time During Playoff Game

Like a game of hide-and-seek, the player was finally found!

During a recent NBA playoff game, former Los Angles Lakers legend Shaquille O’Neal was finally served in a lawsuit that investors filed against failed cryptocurrency company FTX. It’s ironic that Shaq was given the papers at Miami’s Kaseya Center because it was named the FTX Arena before the company went bankrupt.

According to People, during the playoff game between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat, Shaq was served with papers related to the FTX lawsuit that involved Steph Curry, Tom Brady, and other celebrities. The towering TNT analyst was served with two complaints, according to attorney Adam Moskowitz who filed the lawsuit for the investors against Shaq and others.

He confirmed that Shaq was given the complaints while still on the basketball court.

“The process server filmed the event to ensure there was no ambiguity like Shaq has been arguing in the FTX case,” Moskowitz tells People. He then stated that Shaq had the process server “kicked out” after he completed the task.

The attorney said the first complaint, pending since November 2022, relates to the commercials Shaq recorded for FTX before the company folded. The second complaint accuses Shaq of “violating federal securities laws” after the NBA Hall of Famer and his son, Myles O’Neal, founded their company ASTRALS.

Moskowitz represents investors who poured money into FTX and the O’Neals’ NFT venture, ASTRALS. The lawsuit claims they were selling “unregistered securities,” and O’Neal did not follow through on his promise to “always be around” following the FTX lawsuit.

Moskowitz also said, “These claims now are very serious and thus it is good that we can start with the merits, instead of the silly service sideshow Mr. O’Neal unfortunately created.”

According to lawyers representing O’Neal, he was never properly served, and because of this, the claims against the NBA Hall of Famer should be dismissed. Business Insider reported that in a recent court filing, Shaq’s attorneys said the legal paperwork was “tossed” in front of Shaq’s car as he drove away from his Georgia residence. They also claim the documents were left “on the road where they landed.”

The company, previously the second-largest cryptocurrency exchange behind Binance, filed for bankruptcy in November. Now that O’Neal has officially been served, we wonder what will happen next as this lawsuit develops.

White House, Advocates Slam Florida School’s ‘Censorship’ of Inauguration Poem

The White House and advocates on Wednesday decried a Florida school’s decision to remove the poem that celebrated author Amanda Gorman recited at President Joe Biden’s inauguration from the elementary school portion of its library, calling the move censorship.

The poem by Gorman, who is Black and became the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history when she gave her stirring reading of “The Hill We Climb,” offers a hopeful vision for a deeply divided country, praising a United States that is “bruised, but whole.”

“‘The Hill We Climb,’ was written so that all young people would see themselves in a historical moment, and the president and his administration certainly stand with her,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a briefing on Wednesday. “Banning books is censorship, period,” she said, adding “It limits American freedom.”

The Miami-Dade County Public Schools on Tuesday confirmed that the book had been removed from the elementary school portion of a library used for both middle school students, as well as those in younger grades.

“The book titled “The Hill We Climb” by @TheAmandaGorman was never banned or removed from one of our schools,” the school district said on Twitter. “The book is available in the media center as part of the middle grades collection.”

Gorman said Tuesday she was “gutted” after learning that the book, which included the poem, as well as an introduction by celebrity Oprah Winfrey, had been moved.

She also posted what she said was a copy of a complaint filed against the book by a Florida parent, who claimed that the poem indirectly “promoted hate” and mistakenly identified Winfrey as the author.

The complaint and subsequent decision to move the book are the latest examples of attempts in Florida and other Republican-led states seeking to restrict students’ access to materials highlighting African American history, race issues or LGBTQ rights.

Last year, a study commissioned by the Every Library Institute found thatAmericans overwhelmingly oppose book banning and are willing to consider book banning when voting. The American Library Association’s (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom documented the highest number of attempted book bans in 2022 since it began tracking them more than 20 years ago.

ALA Executive Director Tracie Hall announced her organization would feature Gorman as a keynote speaker in its annual conference to “support her freedom of expression” amid “censorship efforts that undermine our Constitution and threaten our democracy.”

The administration of Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has also rejected portions of a proposed new high school Advanced Placement course on African American studies, and banned the teaching of critical race theory, a university-level method for discussing systemic racism in the legal system, from some college courses.

Jamaican Business Owner Blasted For Saying Black American Travelers Are ‘Nothing But A Problem’

Jamaican Business Owner Blasted For Saying Black American Travelers Are ‘Nothing But A Problem’

A Jamaican business owner who rents out private cottages for stay is facing backlash for proudly disinviting Black American travelers to her property because of all the “problems” they bring.

A TikTok user by the name of The Barefoot Island Lady uses the platform to promote her community of private cottages available to rent or stay during a visit to the island of Jamaica. Videos show the 41-year-old Jamaica native caring for her business named Rustic Mountain Living, throwing events for her guests, and even performing comedy skits.

But she ended up going viral for her recent declaration against Black American travelers. It all kicked off on Monday when the business owner posted a video announcing the end of short-term stays “thanks to some Americans.”

By Tuesday, she followed up with a “full explanation” on why she ended her short-term stays due to her stance against “Black American” travelers.

“I have African people stay here. I have Jamaican people stay here. I have white people stay here. I have Spanish people stay here. And I have Black Americans stay here,” she explained.

“I’m not saying not all Black Americans are bad. But the ones that came to my place, have been nothing but problem.”

After noting the “two” Black American travelers she had a good experience with, she called out the remaining visitors who came to her establishment and would fight all night with each other, among other things.

“They’re disrespectful, they’re entitled, they’re unappreciative,” she quipped.

“And it is that way because America have spoiled them and give them so much free sh*t where they think they can come to Jamaica and get the same free sh*t and be nasty about it.”

With such a strong stance against Black American travelers, and posting her rant on TikTok of all places, it didn’t take too long for The Barefoot Island Lady to come under fire across social media.

“I was looking to book & take my 10 yr old for a mnth long experience, this just isn’t energy I want to endure,” one TikTok user wrote.

But the businessowner doubled down saying, “you don’t have to come here.”

Once the post was shared on Twitter, she faced more mixed reactions with some bashing her decision and others criticizing the Black American travelers the initial post applied to.

“The solution is easy, don’t spend your money there, give her what she wants,” one user tweeted. “Black Americans spend more money over there than any other demographic. So she’ll feel the result of this decision eventually.”

“She did say “not all” so if you feel some way about this it’s cause ur the type of person who does this,” another person wrote. “It’s some of y’all who do this to African American business owners. Want free stuff, fight in their establishments, ETC.”

The Rustic Mountain Living business owner has only doubled down on her stance and told social media she will not be “bullied” into changing her mind to appease others.

“The ones that are lashing out at my video, you’re the ones I don’t want here,” she quipped. “I post that video to weed out the bad seeds.”

Move Over Detroit, This US City May Become The Newest Black-Majority City

Move Over Detroit, This US City May Become The Newest Black-Majority City

New census data shows that Motor City may not be the Blackest city in America anymore.

There has been a population decline in Detroit, Detroit Free Press reports, and while the city’s Mayor, Mike Duggan, is unhappy with the new report, he may have to live with that reality. Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau released population estimates showing Memphis, Tennessee, surpassing the home of Motown with 621,056 residents—with Detroit standing at 620,376 as of July 2022.

After 40 years, Memphis could now be considered the country’s largest majority-Black city, outgrowing Detroit by roughly 680 residents.

It’s been a great run for the midwestern city. The city has been filled with one of the larger populations of Black residents than other heavily populated Black cities since 1980. However, experts say it is not set in stone yet, as these are just estimates and should be looked at with caution. The margins are super tight separating the two cities, and new political challenges could increase the population in D-town. Demographer and founder of Data Driven Detroit, Kurt Metzger, says those factors could keep the city on the throne. “Every estimate has to be taken with several grains of salt. “We may be bigger than Memphis right now,” Metzger said.

“I would predict that we will be bigger than Memphis next year.”

Duggan called the U.S. Census a “clown show” and claimed the census is undercounting. According to the Michigan Advance, the mayor says the U.S. Postal Service reported an increase of 6,300 residential homes in the city since 2021. “The only people in America who could conclude that Detroit’s population is decreasing is the Census Bureau,” Duggan said. “Maybe it’s time to move the Census Bureau under the U.S. Postal Service so it will be run by people who actually have some clue about who is living where in America.”

Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) supported the mayor’s claims and joined Duggan’s call for a more accurate count.

‘Take Care of Yourself’ Tina Turner Advised Against Not Taking Care of Your Kidneys In Final Instagram Posts

Legendary singer Tina Turner died this week, and new reports regarding her health are coming to light.

The eight-time Grammy Award winner regretted not taking better care of her kidneys weeks before her untimely death. In one of her final Instagram posts celebrating International World Kidney Day, Turner talked about putting herself in “great danger” by ignoring her kidneys. “Show your kidneys love!” Turner wrote. “They deserve it. My kidneys are victims of me not realizing that my high blood pressure should have been treated with conventional medicine.”

While the cause of her death has yet to be revealed, Turner experienced several health ailments over the years, including intestinal cancer, a stroke, and kidney failure, Insider reports. She referred to her body as “an untouchable and indestructible bastion.” According to TMZ, she was diagnosed with hypertension in 1978 and said she “didn’t care much about it” and “didn’t really try to control it.” Turner discovered her kidneys had lost 35% of functionality after her stroke in 2009. Her second husband, Erwin Bach, matched with her for a kidney transplant in 2017.

Unfortunately, Turner said her body tried to reject the organ after the transplant. She was hospitalized often because of it, leaving her feeling nauseous, dizzy, and with memory issues—and scared. Her battle with kidney disease worsened as she chose homeopathic alternatives to conventional treatment. Shortly after, she started dialysis, which she described as a “depressing” process, leaving her connected to a machine for hours.

Kidney disease symptoms include lack of energy, dry or itchy skin, needing to urinate more than usual, puffiness around the eyes, swollen ankles and feet, and more, according to the National Kidney Foundation.
