Meet Africa’s $7 Billion Infrastructure Architect: Rachel Moré-Oshodi

Rachel Moré-Oshodi is helping build Africa’s future one power line, road, and broadband connection at a time.

According to an Aug. 2 interview with Business Insider Africa, growing up between continents, Rachel Moré-Oshodi saw two versions of the world. In Europe, water ran freely, lights stayed on, and schools were well-funded. In Nigeria, she encountered a different reality—one shaped by infrastructure gaps and inequity.

“It created a kind of guilt in me,” she said. “I saw what I had, and what others didn’t. And I couldn’t unsee it.”

That early awareness became the compass guiding her successful career. Now the CEO of ARM-Harith Infrastructure Investments, Moré-Oshodi has led more than $7 billion in projects across energy, transport, and digital sectors.

Before returning to Nigeria in 2012, she held key roles at institutions like the Inter-American Development Bank and the International Finance Corporation. Her time at the IDB in Washington, D.C., offered a vital lesson.

“It was an eye-opener,” Moré-Oshodi said in an interview with Business Insider Africa. “I saw how intentional, well-structured capital could truly change outcomes. That exposure made it clear to me that Africa deserved no less.”

Among her most personal and challenging projects was the Azura-Edo Independent Power Project, Nigeria’s first privately financed power initiative post-sector reforms. The 450-megawatt plant took eight years to bring to life.

“We had to align Nigeria regulators, local pension funds, and financiers from Sweden, the UK, France, and Germany,” she explained. “We had to align all of that to get the deal across the line.”

Still, one of her proudest innovations may be how she’s changed the game for African pension funds. Historically wary of long-term, illiquid investments, these funds are now beginning to embrace infrastructure, thanks to new financial models Moré-Oshodi helped design.

“The idea was simple: give pension funds a way to earn returns during the construction phase, not just years later,” she said.

It’s a model built on local understanding, global innovation, and trust.

As a woman leading in a male-dominated space, Moré-Oshodi is acutely aware of the challenges — especially in sectors like energy and infrastructure, where women’s leadership remains the exception.

“Cement. Steel. Finance. These are industries where women are more often absent than represented,” she said. “The question isn’t whether African women deserve to be at the table. The question is why we’re still asking that.”

Moré-Oshodi has been honored by Forbes Africa, GQ South Africa, and Fast Company. But more than accolades, she wants to change outcomes. “Infrastructure shapes everything,” she said. “Who better to help shape it than the people most impacted by its failures?”

Sha'Carri Richardson, arrested

Christian Coleman Defends Girlfriend Sha’Carri Richardson After Arrest For Allegedly Assaulting Him

Coleman said she should not have been arrested

Sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested July 27 at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman. He spoke out in her defense, feeling like she should never have been arrested.

According to LetsRun.com, Richardson was arrested after she was reportedly caught on video allegedly pushing Coleman into a column and throwing some headphones at him. She ended up spending 19 hours at the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines, Washington, before being released. She was arrested on a fourth-degree domestic violence offense.

The Athletic reported that Coleman spoke up for Richardson, stating that she should not have been arrested, although the arresting police officer said he had no choice based on her actions.

“I feel like it was just a sucky situation all around,” Coleman said. “I don’t feel as if she should have been arrested.”

He tried to defuse the situation by walking away from her, but she followed through with the alleged attack as it was captured on video. He refused to press charges.

“People have discussions and emotions and stuff like that,” Coleman said. “Does she have things that she needs to work on for herself? Of course. But so do I. So do you. So does everybody. And I’m a type of guy, I’m in the business of extending grace and mercy and love. … I just look at situations like this to take a step back, analyze yourself mentally, and then just try to see what you could do to be your best self so that you can move forward.”

Both runners were heading to Oregon to compete at the U.S. Track and Field (USATF) Outdoor Championships over the weekend when the incident took place.

Beyoncé, Texas Hold ‘Em, tickets, resellers

Beyoncé Releases ‘The Denim Cowboy’ With Levi’s, They Are Really ‘Good Jeans’

BeyHive members believe this fourth ad hints at Beyoncé's next project.

Beyoncé and Levi’s are bridging their past campaigns together in “The Denim Cowboy.”

The “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer already had three commercials with Levi’s in their ongoing partnership. Since the release of her country-inspired album, Cowboy Carter, which features a nod to the denim brand with the hit track “Levii’s Jeans,” the two parties have embarked on multiple commercials as part of their “Reiimagine” campaign.

Now, what seemed to be stand-alone narratives have finally come together with “Chapter 4: The Denim Cowboy.” Parkwood, Beyoncé’s production company and label, released the video to social media.

In their fourth collaboration, Beyoncé arrives on a horse as snippets from her previous three scenes play out with slight variations to the original commercials. She ends the clip as a pool shark, leaving on a motorcycle with her co-star, Timothy Olyphant’s jeans.

The Levi’s campaign not only nodded to Beyoncé’s “country glam” era, but also referenced several classic Levi’s ads in its rollout. The latest video, which includes additional footage from the “Launderette,” “Pool Hall,” and “Refrigerator” commercials, showcases Beyoncé empowered and in charge throughout the sequence.

“At the heart of the campaign is the fact that Levi’s has served as what we like to call this uniform for progress,” said Kenny Mitchell, Levi’s global chief marketing officer, in an interview with WWD. “We’ve long outfitted people in the world who are changemakers, who are icons, and who are originals.”

However, some BeyHive members noted that Beyoncé no longer used the horse, emblematic of the “Cowboy Carter” era, opting instead to take off on a motorcycle. According to CNN, the transition from horse to motorcycle could mean a shift from country to rock, as many rumors claim that Act III of Beyoncé’s musical trilogy will focus on rock music.

While fans may never know until Beyoncé releases the actual next phase, “The Denim Cowboy” is sure to keep the BeyHive buzzing. Fans can also buy pieces worn by the star in the Beyoncé x Levi’s Collection.

Denim lovers can even get her final look, comprised of the Western Crystal ‘90s Shrunken Trucker jacket, retailing for $250, the Western Crystal 501 Curve jeans ($150), through the singer’s website. It will also become available Aug. 7 on Levi’s online retailer as well.

Statue Of Confederate General With Ku Klux Klan Ties To Be Reinstalled In Washington, D.C.

There are more than 2,000 Confederate symbols still standing in public spaces nationwide

A statue of a Confederate general that demonstrators toppled in Washington, D.C., in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd will be reinstalled. The bronze statue depicting Gen. Albert Pike is currently undergoing restoration, the National Park Service announced on Monday.

“The restoration aligns with federal responsibilities under historic preservation law as well as recent executive orders to beautify the nation’s capital and reinstate pre-existing statues,” the agency announced in a statement.

According to NBC News, demonstrators used ropes to tear the statue down outside the Metropolitan Police Department headquarters before dousing it in lighter fluid and setting it ablaze.

The statue has been in secure storage since its removal and is currently undergoing restoration by the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Training Center.

“Site preparation to repair the statue’s damaged masonry plinth will begin shortly, with crews repairing broken stone, mortar joints, and mounting elements,” the statement continues.“ The NPS is targeting October 2025 for completing the reinstallment of the fully restored statue.”

Confederate General Albert Pike’s Ties To The Ku Klux Klan

Initially authorized by Congress in 1898 and dedicated in 1901, the NPS says the statue honors Pike’s leadership in Freemasonry, including his 32 years as Sovereign Grand Commander of the Ancient Rite of Scottish Freemasonry.

According to the History and Social Justice Center at Tougaloo University, there is strong evidence of Pike’s membership in the Reconstruction-era Klan. While there is no definitive evidence, historical works, including Susan Lawrence Davis’s 1924 work, Authentic History, Ku Klux Klan, 1865-1877, Pike is in the front of a photo, which historians say shows his importance to the group.

However, even without direct membership, Pike’s views on race were aligned with the Klan’s white supremacist ideology. He opposed the mixing of races and the integration of Masonic lodges. He also joined others in advocating for the expulsion of free Blacks from Arkansas before the Civil War, according to the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

Nationwide, there are more than 2,000 Confederate symbols still standing in public spaces, according to a report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson Is Out Here Promoting Climate-Friendly Seaweed Snacks

Samuel L. Jackson declares it's “more urgent than ever”

Vattenfall is redefining what a wind farm can be, and this time, it comes with snacks. In a surprising collaboration, the energy company has partnered with actor and former marine biology student Samuel L. Jackson to launch Wind Farmed Seaweed Snacks, made from seaweed cultivated at one of Vattenfall’s offshore wind farms.

The seaweed is harvested from Vattenfall’s Danish wind farm Vesterhav Syd, where it grows on lines strung between the wind turbines. While these turbines generate fossil-free electricity, the seaweed contributes to the regeneration of the marine ecosystem by absorbing carbon dioxide and excess nutrients.

“For me, it’s about the world we’re leaving behind for the next generation. That’s why I wanted to be part of this collaboration with Vattenfall,” Jackson told Food and Drink Technology. “These offshore wind farms aren’t just producing fossil-free electricity, they also create a habitat for sea life to grow. For example, seaweed is a food that can help regenerate the marine environment. That’s next-level thinking.”

The project is part of Vattenfall’s broader WIN@sea initiative, which explores how offshore wind infrastructure can serve multiple purposes, including food production and environmental monitoring.

Although the seaweed snacks are not being mass-produced for sale, a limited quantity has been made available to select individuals. The goal is not commercial, but educational: to shift public perception about how renewable energy infrastructure can coexist with — and even support — natural ecosystems.

“For Vattenfall, this initiative is about taking a broader approach, working with partners to find innovative ways to use our fossil-free electricity infrastructure in coexistence with nature,” said Helle Herk-Hansen, head of environment at Vattenfall.

“The Wind Farmed Seaweed Snacks demonstrate that this is possible. And with an advocate like Samuel L. Jackson, we had the opportunity to share that message with more people.”

Jackson described the unconventional snacks as “Salty and tasty, but the snacks are actually more than their taste. This project is about rethinking how our energy infrastructure can coexist with nature. That’s a game-changer. That’s something worth spreading and getting people behind.”

According to an interview between Vattenfall and Jackson, the 76-year-old actor wants people to take one thing from the Vattenfall initiative.

“I hope people start seeing wind farms in a new light. They get some s**t for being harmful to nature, but if you look beneath the surface, they can benefit society in many ways, beyond just providing fossil-free electricity. It’s about using ocean space smartly, growing food for harvest while also having artificial reefs that support the marine environment,” Jackson said.

Jackson concluded by emphasizing that time is of the essence when it comes to supporting initiatives like Wind Farmed Seaweed Snacks.

“It’s time to get serious about solutions where fossil-free electricity production and nature can coexist, and this project with Vattenfall proves that it’s a collective effort. Many players have contributed to making this project a reality, and I’m happy to be a part of it and showcase it to the world.”

Amazon, Missouri

Amazon Buys $270M Land Development South Of Atlanta For Potential Data Center

The land acquisition has a high probability of becoming a data center.

Amazon has purchased a $270 million land development just south of Atlanta for a potential data center.

The purchase, finalized July 25, saw the tech giant purchase 984.89 acres of land. According to the Barnesville Buzz, the acquisition is one of the largest private land deals in the county’s history.

Amazon has yet to disclose the land’s exact use, with warehouse operations also considered an option. However, a spokesperson told WABE about the high possibility of its use as a data center.

“We are constantly evaluating new locations based on customer demand… and are performing due diligence in exploring possible data center locations,” the statement read.

Despite the unknowns, a Lamar County commissioner informed residents that Amazon will inform them of their plans for the area at pre-construction meetings. Resident are encouraged to attend to learn more about how these constructions may impact their communities.

“At these meetings, Amazon will clarify their plans, providing greater insight into the nature and scope of their project,” explained Commission Chairman Ryran Traylor, to the Barnesville Buzz. “We recognize that industrial developments can impact surrounding properties, and we are committed to ensuring that this new project brings the minimal possible disruption to neighboring areas and Lamar County as a whole.”

However, the land development deal follows Amazon’s prior announcement in January to invest $11 billion in Georgia for infrastructure that supports “cloud computing and AI technologies.” They aim to create approximately 550 high-skilled jobs for residents.

“State and local leaders have cultivated an environment that enables companies like AWS [Amazon Web Services] to make bold, forward-looking investments,” detailed the presser at the time. “We are excited to deepen our partnership with the state of Georgia and contribute to the continued advancement of its thriving technology landscape.”

However, the acquisition may draw some justified pushback from surrounding residents. Data centers often result in air and water pollution, incurring claims of environmental racism, especially as they impact Black communities. According to Data USA, Black people account for nearly 30% of Lamar County’s population.

A Elon Musk-led data center’s health and environmental impact on the predominantly Black communities in Memphis has led to legal action by multiple advocacy groups, including the NAACP.

Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles

Trump Includes Saquon Barkley On His Sports Council, The NFL Player Declines, Respectfully

'I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned.'

President Donald Trump recently announced that Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley was joining his newly formed Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, surprising the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year, who stated that he had turned down the president’s request to be on the council.

According to The Associated Press, the president has reinstated the council and expressed that Barkley, along with other sports figures, golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Nelly Korda, former WWE wrestler and now executive Paul “Triple H” Levesque, NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, and retired New York Yankees relief pitcher, Mariano Rivera had agreed to be on the council.

However, after attending practice for the upcoming NFL season starting in several weeks, Barkley stated that he was shocked to hear his name mentioned since he told President Trump that he was “going to be super busy” to be on it.

“A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council,” Barkley told reporters. “So I’m not really too familiar with it. I felt like that I am going to be super busy. Me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that. I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I’m assuming it’s something great, so I appreciate it, but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned.”

Barkley, who left the New York Giants to sign as a free agent with the Eagles, had a record-breaking season in his first year with the franchise, helping them win last season’s Super Bowl. Just one year after joining the team, the Eagles made Barkley the highest-paid running back in NFL history.

The running back reportedly inked a contract extension worth $41.2 million, with $36 million guaranteed. The deal also includes $15 million in incentives. Earlier this summer, it was announced that he made the cover of EA SPORTS™ Madden NFL 26, making him the first Eagle to grace the game’s cover in 20 years. The game will be released Aug. 14 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via the EA app for Windows, Steam, and Epic Games Store.

Baltimore mayor, Brandon M. Scott

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott To ‘Soft Launch’ 3rd Campaign Run In Martha’s Vineyard

Scott has begun paving the way for his third mayoral run in 2028.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott will test the waters for his re-relection campaign with a fundraiser at a historic home in Martha’s Vineyard.

Calling it “Volume 3,” Scott will “soft launch” his third mayoral run in the New England island, known for its longstanding history as a haven for Black families. The fundraiser will specifically take place at Legacy House, as reported by the Baltimore Banner. The historic home, located in the island’s Oak Bluff neighborhood, frequently housed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement.

With tickets ranging from $250 to $2,500, Scott intends for the moment to spark his re-election efforts. While not formally announcing anything yet, Scott shared that he would explore the opportunity if able to.

“I can run again, and why wouldn’t I?” he said on the phone to the news outlet.

Scott was first elected in 2020, taking office as the youngest mayor in Baltimore history at 36 years old. Now 41, Scott wants the event’s attendees to learn about the local-level progress throughout Maryland.

“This is a moment — especially during our current political landscape — where we are reminding folks that, if we want to be successful politically, deep, deep involvement is needed at the local level,” he said.

Furthermore, Scott has received praise from constituents for his work thus far in Baltimore. According to the National Urban League, his community-based approach to reducing crime has led to historic drops in the city’s homicide rate. Instead of heightened police presence and arrests, Scott aimed to address the needs of communities facing the most violence.

“While we acknowledge the historic lows we are experiencing, we must simultaneously acknowledge that there is much more work to do and our success makes me commit even further to doing it,” expressed Scott, as reported by the publication.

As for his fundraiser location, Scott will appeal to the Black elites who vacation in the area. The historic haven has transformed into a summer getaway for wealthy Black families, including the Obamas. His move to host a fundraiser there also unveils a new pattern of Black politicians turning to this circle for funding opportunities.

The Martha’s Vineyard event could also signify that Scott may run for a higher seat in office. While he has yet to establish a committee to raise funds for federal races, the money raised in his local fund could be transferred for campaigns in Maryland.

While mingling with Black game-changers who wield vast political influence, the event could elevate Scott’s political profile from a local to a national scale. The fundraiser will take place Aug. 20 at The Legacy House in Martha’s Vineyard.

The video captures Kash Doll, whose real name is Arkeisha Knight, “making it rain” on her friend, Kendra P, CEO of a luxury hair line, who recently married Detroit rapper Payroll Giovanni.

The extravagant and loving gesture, which the couple’s wedding planner said amounted to a $20,000 gift, has captivated social media.

“What’s the perfect wedding gift from a Maid of Honor named @KashDoll to her bridal bestie marrying a man whose show name is @payroll_giovanni after you two have already iced one another out and made each other Birkin Besties!? According to Suhera Calabat, founder of the Detroit-based event planning company, Eventfully Yours, the idea was a tribute to the couple’s unique bond.

“Their friendship, they’re like soulmates,” Calabat said. “They met at a church. And their love for each other is so unique that no monetary substance can put a number to it.”

The idea was sparked by Kendra P, who shared videos of traditional Nigerian or Albanian weddings where couples are showered with money. “She said, ‘This is so cool,’” Calabat recalled. “Kash Doll said, ‘Let’s do it.’ And she did.”

While the act was spontaneous, Calabat said the money was not just for show. Kash Doll had originally planned to gift the couple a honeymoon package, and Kendra P intended to put the cash toward their honeymoon. To address a common question from viewers online, Calabat confirmed that the money was collected by the wedding staff and Kash Doll’s mother and then handed over to the couple.

The wedding itself was a surprise for the bride and the culmination of a 14-year love story. The groom, identified by Calabat as Dior, approached her two months ago to plan a summer wedding. “I said, ‘What are you doing August 3rd?’” Calabat said, recounting the moment she surprised the bride with the wedding date. “‘You’re walking down the aisle on that date.’”

The ceremony took place at The Godfrey in Detroit and featured a custom-built environment that transformed the space with florals, lighting, and custom decals. The bride wore four different dresses and a jumper throughout the evening. Calabat described the production as an “army” of professionals working tirelessly to create the “lavish and elegant” affair.

Kash and Kendra have been best friends for over 20 years.

The viral video has provided a glimpse into the glamorous lives of Detroit’s “royal couple” and highlighted the dedication and love Kash Doll has t for her bestie, Kendra P, as she begins her new life with her husband.

Uncle Nearest, Square One Organic Spirits

Uncle Nearest Faces $108 Million Lawsuit Over Alleged Loan Defaults

Uncle Nearest owners, Fawn and Keith Weaver, have since denied the accusations and called the lawsuit "salacious and inaccurate.”

Uncle Nearest Inc., a whiskey company founded in Shelbyville, Tennessee, has denied all accusations against its company after being hit with a multi-million dollar lawsuit from its lender, Farm Credit Mid-America.

Filed in the U.S. District Court’s Eastern Division, the lawsuit alleges that Uncle Nearest defaulted on more than $100 million in loans and misused collateral and loan proceeds. However, Uncle Nearest maintains that any company misconduct was the fault of a now-terminated CFO.

The suit claims the distillery, co-founded by Fawn and Keith Weaver in 2016, failed to uphold the terms of its loan agreement, including making timely principal and interest payments.

According to the lender, the company also used part of the loan to buy a $2 million home in Martha’s Vineyard. It allegedly sold off barrels—considered key collateral—to cover unrelated financial obligations.

“The collateral subject to the lender’s liens is in danger of being lost and/or materially injured or impaired to the extent a receiver is not appointed,” the lawsuit states, pushing for a court-appointed receiver to protect the lender’s interests.

“The enhanced value and stabilization from a professional, court-appointed receiver outweighs any potential harm.”

Farm Credit Mid-America further claims that Uncle Nearest sold off future revenue streams at steep discounts and failed to maintain the required net worth of $100 million in 2024. An internal review in January 2025 allegedly revealed the company overstated its borrowing base by around $21 million.

“Uncle Nearest has been in default under the loans since as early as Jan. 2, 2024, and has continued to incur further defaults over the last eighteen months,” the suit claims. One of the most recent breaches cited is the company’s failure to pay off its revolving loans by their maturity date of July 22, 2025.

The lender also noted that attempts to work out a resolution with Uncle Nearest were largely ignored.

The lawsuit pointed out, “From January 2024 through March 2025, the lender sent formal and informal notices of default, requests for updated information regarding its collateral, and requests for meetings. Unfortunately… these notices and requests failed to result in any resolution and were mainly met with extremely delayed responses,” the lawsuit states.

Ultimately, Farm Credit Mid-America is seeking a judgment of no less than $102 million from Uncle Nearest, plus accrued interest, legal fees, and any additional costs related to collection.

Fawn and Keith Weaver, the couple behind the popular Uncle Nearest whiskey brand and owners of a Martha’s Vineyard property, have responded to a lawsuit from their lender seeking to place their business into receivership.

In a court filing on August 3, the Weavers denied the claims brought by Farm Credit Mid-America, calling them “salacious and inaccurate.”

The Tennessee-based distillery pointed to alleged misconduct by a now-terminated chief financial officer, who they claim inflated barrel inventory values and triggered the dispute. Uncle Nearest says the lender was fully informed during restructuring discussions and even approved loan increases without verifying inventory figures.

The company added it made nearly $9 million in payments in 2024, followed by another $7.5 million this year after a restructuring agreement. As for the Martha’s Vineyard property, the Weavers argue the purchase was transparent and claim the lender failed to secure a legal claim to it.

A third-party investigation into the former CFO’s actions is ongoing.

The filing concluded, “Here, defendants acknowledge that the agreements at issue technically allow for a receiver to be appointed but given the circumstances, one should not be appointed here. Plaintiff was fully informed and aware of the circumstances that led to the technical default and was working side-by-side with defendants to find a resolution.”
