Black Residents ‘Displaced By Design’ In ATL Gentrification War

Atlanta is no longer a majority-Black city and it is not alone.

A new report shows Atlanta is a hotspot for extreme gentrification.

Over the past five decades, a mass infiltration of new residents has led to the displacement of thousands of Black residents. The National Community Reinvestment Coalition’s (NCRC) study, “Displaced By Design: Fifty Years of Gentrification and Black Cultural Displacement in U.S. Cities,” finds that between 1980 and 2020, Atlanta saw 155 formerly majority-Black neighborhoods flip to majority-white residents.

The city has the second-highest total number of neighborhoods among major metro areas after Washington, D.C.

During that period, the city lost an estimated 22,000 Black residents in the gentrification of the Fourth Ward, East Atlanta, and Kirkwood, according to the report.

Gentrification in Atlanta intensified the most from 2000 to 2012, driven by rising incomes, rising property values, and a larger college-educated population. The NCRC analysis tracks these gentrification shifts by measuring increases in per-capita income, home values, and residents with bachelor’s degrees. Some homeowners benefit from increased equity in their homes. At the same time, many long-term residents faced rising rents and property taxes that forced them to relocate.

“Gentrification often brings new investment, but without protections for existing residents, it erodes cultural identity and deepens inequality,” the report states.

New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and the San Francisco Bay Area are the cities most affected by racial gentrification, but Atlanta stands out for the severity of its neighborhood transformations.

According to the report, “From 1980 to 2020, more than 523 majority-Black neighborhoods nationwide experienced gentrification, and about 261,000 fewer Black residents now live in those areas.”

One notable city is New Orleans. Its deep culture is shared by Black and white people alike. Still, many would credit Black contributors as a major force in shaping the unique American city.

Those Black contributors, New Orleans natives, are victims of economic and racial violence in the form of gentrification. This process became extremely rapid after the failings of the government, both local and federal, following Hurricane Katrina.

The city was already struggling due to redlining, rising housing costs, and affordable housing availability. After Katrina’s destruction, the crisis became worse.

“We missed an opportunity post-Katrina because there was no comprehensive plan about how we would ensure that renters had housing options,” said Cashauna Hill of the Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center to 4WWL. “Instead, we spent the money to build up neighborhoods that were already gentrifying without protecting long-term residents.”

The city is approaching the 20th anniversary of the catastrophe. It also ranks fifth on the list of cities with the highest gentrification. However, no major strides have been made in creating opportunities for natives to gain a foothold in the city.

Unfortunately, residents of Atlanta and New Orleans are not alone. Black displacement approaches half a million people. Policy experts say targeted measures, such as property tax freezes for longtime homeowners, community land trusts and stronger tenant protections, are essential to prevent further loss of Black cultural heritage.

Cassie Claims Seeing Diddy At Prince’s House Led To Her Leave

She claims Diddy then followed her to her hotel room, where "he beat me up."

On the third day of the Sean “Diddy” Combs trial, his former girlfriend, Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, revealed that she left recording artist Prince’s house after discovering he was also there.

According to People, while on the witness stand in a Manhattan federal courtroom, Cassie testified that she was looking forward to a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience of seeing Prince perform at his house. But Diddy’s presence forced her to flee the premises once she arrived.

She explained that she was having dinner with friends when the chance to see the Purple Rain artist arose. She said she did not want to let Diddy know she was going because she feared “he would say no.”

After arriving at Prince’s home, she noticed some BET executives and saw Diddy. When she knew he was there, she realized that he saw her and was not happy with her.

“I caught a glimpse of him, left the party, and ran out as fast as I could,” she testified. “I knew he was angry at me.” His facial expressions revealed his anger, “and then he came after me.”

Cassie testified that she fell into the bushes outside Prince’s house while running away.

She made it back to the Beverly Hills Hotel, where she was staying, and said that the No Way Out recording artist burst into her hotel room.

“We went into the bedroom and he beat me up,” Cassie said. “He threw luggage at me, calling me all kinds of names.”

Diddy is on trial after being charged with five criminal counts of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. If the music executive is convicted, he could face a life sentence.

Candace Owens Safe After FBI Arrests Man Who Wanted Her Dead

Owens and her family are safe.

Media personality Candace Owens is safe after the FBI arrested a man from New Jersey who had plans to kill her, the New York Post reports.

Authorities arrested Haim Braverman after they believed he was a grave threat to Owens and her family.

Owens provided the rundown on social media, claiming Braverman was after her because of a debate she had with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach on Piers Morgan Uncensored in September 2024.

“The motive of the crime was made clear to me by the FBI today. Haim wanted to murder me because of my @piersmorgan debate against Shmuley,” she wrote on X. “Bc I offended the dead Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, who many Jews viewed as a messiah. Haim was unequivocal that he was willing to serve time in prison for killing me.”

Owens said her family was subjected to harassment and threats, prompting involvement from the authorities. She started a social media thread showcasing the entire ordeal that she said started shortly after her appearance on the show.

“My family endured a series of attacks led by deranged Zionists,” she wrote on X. After accusing the FBI of withholding information about the case, in March, Owens said, she received a “victim packet” in the mail with a case number and victim representative assigned, but claimed there weren’t any additional details provided on the organization’s website.

However, once the details surfaced, things changed.

Braverman allegedly shared his plans to harm Owens and her family online with a private group chat titled “Real Jewish,” and included pictures of knives, stun guns and steel bats. While Braverman didn’t name the podcast host by name, he posted a video pointing the finger at a “political commentator”—referred to in the complaint as “Individual-1”—by name while holding a bat.

“If I could fking kill you right now, I would not even… fk it, I’ll give you the steel bat. I wouldn’t even stop. I’d kill you. Dead,” he allegedly said.

He also allegedly continued with a written comment stating, “[Individual-1] needs to be killed.”

Owens, who has been accused on multiple occasions of making antisemitic statements against Jews and the nation of Israel, expressed frustration with the Department of Justice for its lack of transparency. Owens claimed Braverman had already pleaded guilty, but that she wasn’t informed. She also questioned why his mugshot wasn’t posted on social media.

“This is Haim Braverman. It seems his socials have been scrubbed from the web, and this is the only photo I can find of him, which was included in a media piece about his guilty plea one week ago,” she wrote.

“This photo, btw, was provided by the DOJ. Where is his mugshot photo? And who else was in the group chat? According to the DOJ’s email to me, Haim Braverman is being charged with Interstate communications for ransom.”

According to WBLS, Braverman is scheduled to be sentenced in September.

Big Freedia Mourns Loss Of Her Longtime Partner To Diabetes: ‘He Is Free From Any Pain’

Big Freedia Mourns Loss Of Her Longtime Partner To Diabetes: ‘He Is Free From Any Pain’

Big Freedia and Devon Hurst were together for 20 years.

Big Freedia‘s longtime partner, Devon Hurst, has died from diabetes. In a late-night May 15 Instagram post, the New Orleans bounce icon shared the sad news.

“I’m devastated to have to announce that today my partner of 20 years Devon Hurst passed away peacefully due to complications from diabetes, surrounded by his loving family,” Freedia wrote.

“He is survived by his mother Chareen Hurst, his sisters Meshonda ,Stephany and Jayla, his brothers , Steven ,Stephon and Malcolm his daughter Zyrielle , his son Davone and his nieces and nephews and his partner Freddie Ross Jr.”

The music star and entrepreneur noted the impact of the loss.

“He will be deeply missed by everyone in this community who knew him and loved him,” Freedia added. “We take comfort in knowing he is free from any pain and suffering, and is at peace in the loving arms of Jesus Christ 🙏🏾❤️”

The news highlights the grim realities of the impact of diabetes within the Black community. Research shows that Black adults in the United States face a significantly higher burden of diabetes than their white counterparts. They are about 1.4 times more likely to be diagnosed with the disease and 40% more likely to die from it compared to non-Hispanic white adults.

Black diabetes patients also experience higher rates of hospitalization for uncontrolled diabetes and are at greater risk of developing end-stage kidney disease as a result. Averages are slightly higher among Black women compared to Black men.

Hurst played a key role in Big Freedia’s professional circle, frequently helping manage her bookings and business affairs. In Season 2 of her show, which documents her journey to create a gospel album, Hurst openly addressed the backlash Freedia faced from the gospel community due to her identity.

In announcing his deaths, Freedia requested privacy for his family and loved ones at this. A public service will be held.

Summer Lee, reparations

Summer Lee Keeps Conversation on Reparations Alive By Reintroducing Legislation

Lee, who is a descendent of enslaved people: “Black folks are owed more than thoughts and prayers.”

Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) is reviving the conversation surrounding reparations for Black Americans by reintroducing legislation to give federal dollars to descendants of enslaved people, The Hill reports.

The Reparations Now Resolution, first proposed by former Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) in 2023, pushes for the federal government to secure trillions of dollars in reparations toward Black Americans for the country’s involvement with slavery, Jim Crow, and the continuous effects of policies relating to racial discrimination.

Lee, a descendant of enslaved people, said, “Black folks are owed more than thoughts and prayers. We’re here to say that there’s no more waiting, no more watering down, no more putting justice on layaway,” she said at a May 15 press conference.

“We’re owed repair, we’re owed restitution, and we’re owed justice.”

Bush, who lost her 2024 primary, attended the press conference supporting Lee.

The United States, Bush said, has “profited off the stolen labor, the stolen land and stolen lives of Black people. From the first shackled bodies brought to these shores—and those that didn’t make it to the shores—to the grueling, back-breaking, murderous work done on plantations that built America’s wealth, to the federal officials who enslaved human beings while they wrote our laws even here in this building, America has been cashing checks written in Black blood.”

Members of the Congress known as “The Squad”—Democratic Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI)—also showed support at the conference. Pressley has continued the push for reparations by reintroducing H.R. 40.

The bill would create a federal commission targeting research to examine the lasting impact of slavery, systemic racism and racial discrimination in addition to identifying measures like reparations, addressing the harms.

Lee, Pressley and Bush blamed the Trump administration for carrying on the harm with attempts to limit diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies and issuing threats against the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

“We are in a moment of anti-Blackness on steroids, and we refuse to be silent,” Pressley said. “We will not back down in our pursuit of racial justice. The antidote to anti-Blackness is to be pro-Black, and we will do it unapologetically. The United States government owes us a debt, and we need reparations now.”

Of course, the vocal lawmakers will have some pushback. According to Fox News, after Pressley’s notion, supported by Sen. Cory Booker, GOP lawmaker Brian Babin (R-TX) introduced legislation in early 2025 threatening to pull federal funding from state and local areas that touched reparations policies.

Beyoncé Capitalizes Off ‘Cowboy Carter’ With ‘Leviis Jeans’ T-Shirt Collab

Beyoncé x Levi Jeans is dropping a new line of Graphic Tees.

Beyoncé is continuing her collaboration with Levi’s. The singer and clothing wear company are offering a limited-edition collection of graphic tees.

The graphic tee launch marks the first product released from their ongoing “REIIMAGINE” campaign. The collaboration reimagines Levi’s iconic batwing logo by incorporating a double “ii.” Levi’s inclusion of the “ii” is a creative nod to Beyoncé’s track Levii’s Jeans from her Grammy-winning album Cowboy Carter. The branding style pays homage to the song and pairs it with the classic Levi’s aesthetic with Beyoncé’s personal flair.

The collection features four distinct tees, the Graphic Essential Sporty Ringer Tee and the Classic Graphic T-Shirt, each available in black and white or white and red colorways. The Beyoncé X Levi graphic tee collaboration was announced on the company’s Instagram account.

In a creative twist, the company posted animated promotional images of the singer wearing the upcoming merchandise. Along with Cowboy Carter herself, a diverse image of people in a western setting are also rocking their Levi’s and graphic tees.

These designs blend timeless silhouettes with contemporary elements, reflecting Levi’s heritage and Beyoncé’s influence. The tees are available for purchase on Beyoncé’s official website, with a wider release on Levi.com, the Levi’s app, and select Levi’s stores. Levi’s Red Tab loyalty program members received early access to the collection on May 15. The release is widely available on May 16.

This collaboration is part of the broader REIIMAGINE campaign. The first phase featured Queen Bey in a series of reimagined versions of classic Levi’s advertisements.

The visuals are a nod to the past and acknowledge the future–a future where Black women represent for country music culture. Beyoncé’s involvement has significantly boosted Levi’s cultural relevance and sales, with the partnership contributing to a notable increase in store visits and online engagement.

Levi’s Chief Executive Michelle Gass spoke about the longevity of the brand and the nod from Beyoncé in Levii Jeans.

“Denim is having a moment and the Levi’s brand is having a powerful moment around the world,” she said. “You see head-to-toe denim everywhere around the world. Western is really trending in fashion and in music, Gass told MarketWatch.

“I don’t think there’s any better evidence or proof point than having someone like Beyoncé, who’s a culture shaper, to actually name a song after us. So we’re super proud of that.”

That One Time The Homie Came Through: Shaq Lent John Salley $70K, Then Forgave Loan

"I went back to see him, he said, 'Nah, we're good.'"

Shaquille O’Neal has long has a reputation of being one of professional sports’ most kind-hearted people. Thanks to The Basketball Network, we have additional proof.

In a talk with DJ Vlad, NBA veteran John Salley, who was a teammate of Shaq’s with the Los Angeles Lakers, needed a loan. Shaq gave him $70,000. When it was time to repay him, Shaq declined.

“Nah, we’re good,” Salley recalled Shaq saying.

Shaq is working with TNT during the NBA playoffs, but he has other projects.

Netflix is gearing up to release a documentary, Power Moves with Shaquille O’Neal, which will focus on the former Orlando Magic center making executive decisions to bring back the Reebok brand that sponsored him and Allen Iverson during their playing days.

“Reebok was Shaquille O’Neal’s first sponsor, and now we will follow him as he takes on the role of President of Reebok Basketball to try and revive this struggling brand and restore it to its former glory,” Netflix wrote. :Along with Allen Iverson as VP, we will follow Shaq and the team hustling to pull it off at the Reebok HQ in Boston.”

After hiring Shaq, one of his first moves was to sign Angel Reese, a fellow LSU (Louisiana State University) phenom, in 2023.

Retirement, tariffs

10 Moves To Increase Your Nest Egg As Tariffs Change Retirement Saving Plan Efforts

Making contributions, automating savings and spending extra money wisely can help boost retirement savings.

New data shows that economic and market uncertainty fueled by tariffs is hurting the ability of Black Americans to save for retirement more than other groups.

Some  43% of Blacks are more inclined to have accessed their employee-sponsored retirement plan benefit, compared to 27% for whites and 4% for Hispanics. Thirty-eight percent of Blacks now want to save extra money for a possible emergency, versus 23% of whites and 22% of Hispanics.

The findings were provided to BLACK ENTERPRISE tied to a fresh survey by the health, wealth, and investment firm Voya Financial. Some 520 American adults working full-time and eligible for benefits were questioned, including 13% of Black respondents.

The research overall disclosed how tariffs are silently fueling a financial dilemma for U.S. workers. Most expect tariffs to spark an extensive recession and higher unemployment, and perhaps lead to price increases on goods being indirectly impacted.

The tariffs imposed by President Trump are forcing Americans to reduce their savings and make other drastic changes to improve their finances. Interestingly, 21% of Blacks are moving investments to cash accounts, compared to 13% of respondents.

Based on another report, Kerry Sette, vice president and head of consumer insights and research at Voya, shared how critical it is to have a retirement plan during uneven times.

“Market volatility, policy changes, regulatory shifts, and fluctuating investor sentiment can create uncertainty, but maintaining a steady retirement savings and investment strategy is key.”

A bright spot is that there are multiple moves Black Americans can consider using to help elevate their retirement savings, based on research by BLACK ENTERPRISE:

Start contributing immediately to retirement.

If you’re starting to stash money for retirement, start saving as much as you can now. That can help you compound interest, potentially allowing your assets to generate their own earnings through such means as reinvestment.

Give toward your 401(k).

If your employer offers a traditional 401(k) plan and you qualify for it, it may allow you to contribute pre-tax money that can be significantly beneficial. You can boost your 401(k) account if you have one, even if you started working or are a seasoned investor. Experts advise reserving around 15% of your income and trying to raise your contribution by 1% each year.

Meet your employer’s match.

If your job matches your 401(k) plan contributions, be sure you pitch in at least enough to take full advantage of the match. For instance, an employer may offer to match 50% of employee contributions up to 5% of your salary. That purportedly means if you earn $50,000 a year and contribute $2,500 to your retirement plan, your employer will kick in another $1,250. This could basically be free money you can take advantage of.

Automate savings.

Consider making retirement contributions automatic monthly. This move can potentially grow your retirement savings without you having to think about it. Be sure to check with your employer to see if they offer this option, as several reportedly do.

Select investments sensibly.

When planning for retirement, being mindful means choosing investments that align with your risk tolerance and time frame to help support growth. Perhaps diversify your investments across asset classes like stocks, mutual funds, and real estate to mitigate risks. Ask what fees are tied to your investment options and monitor market conditions that could impact your investment plan.

Pull back from early withdrawals.

Stay clear of this premature approach from plans such as 401(k)s and IRAs, as it can harm future retirement funding. It can come with penalties and taxes, trim retirement savings, and possibly weaken potential investment growth and compounding returns.

Reduce debt.

Examine where you can cut expenses. For instance, maybe bargain for a smaller payment on your car insurance, eat out less, and eliminate subscriptions. The savings could help boost your retirement plan contributions, making the golden years more lucrative. Data shows hiking your contribution from 4% to 6% could add over $110,000 to your nest egg over 30 years, assuming a $50K salary.

Keep working.

This would give you more income and time to save for retirement.

 Use extra money prudently.

Don’t lavishly spend extra money you might gain, whether from a job raise, tax refund, inheritance, or a bonus. Alternatively, use the surplus cash to build your retirement kitty. And consider putting the money into an account with tax advantages to maximize your savings.

Tap into resources to get expert help.

Don’t be afraid to contact qualified professional experts, such as a financial planner, tax specialist, and estate planning specialist, to build a retirement plan to help you reach your goals. Do online research to get more help, including checking out this site and another one here.
