Nottoway Plantation

As Nottoway Plantation Burns, The Ancestors, And Social Media Rejoice

The Nottoway Plantation, a monument to Southern grandeur built on the backs of enslaved Black people, has been destroyed by a fire that raged for nearly 40 hours beginning late May 15. The inferno gutted the 160-year-old estate-turned-resort, once the largest antebellum mansion remaining in the South.

Staff at the renamed Nottoway Resort noticed smoke in the south wing on the night of May 14. The fire quickly spread through the 64-room, 53,000-square-foot property, including a three-story rotunda. It had been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980. Despite efforts from multiple fire departments, the structure was lost.

While the Iberville Parish government grieves the destruction of what it calls an economic “cornerstone,” others see poetic justice in the ashes of a plantation that never meaningfully confronted its legacy of slavery. Built in 1859 by sugar magnate John Hampden Randolph, the estate was powered by the forced labor of more than 150 enslaved people, a fact often glossed over in tourist brochures.

“The loss of Nottoway is not just a loss for Iberville Parish, but for the entire state of Louisiana,” parish President Chris Daigle said in a statement. “It was a cornerstone of our tourism economy and a site of national significance. Its absence will be felt deeply—by our community, our state, and by the many who found meaning in its preservation.”

In recent decades, the property was marketed as a wedding venue and luxury getaway—complete with plantation balls—without so much as a public reckoning with the atrocities committed on its grounds.

Once a house of horrors, the Nottoway Plantation eventually rebranded itself as a museum, only to be repackaged again as a luxury resort. What was once a site of brutal human trafficking became the Nottoway Resort, complete with wedding packages, guest suites, and even a tennis court. Plantation tourism disguised as Southern charm.

While the Iberville Parish government bemoans the loss as a blow to the local economy and a piece of “national significance,” others aren’t mourning. For many, the destruction feels less like a tragedy and more like a reason to celebrate.

One social media user points to the lack of acknowledgment of the property’s racist past as a reason for indifference.

“#Nottaway burning? I have nottacare. Rebranding a plantation as a resort is wild and diabolical. They don’t even acknowledge the history of plantation on the website. They referred to it as a” southern mansion,” they wrote.

Posting a video of the conflagration, another X user remarked, “It’s about time.”

Some insinuated that the blaze appeared art-like and even evoked the textile art of Eboni Hogan for reference.

“Watching it burn brought to mind Eboni Hogan’s textile piece (the first image),” the X caption read.

https://twitter.com/justicehorn_/status/1923431091827851324?s=46

Another X user noted the property’s horrific past and disrespectful and tone-deaf present.

“Generations of human beings were held captive, tortured, raped, mutilated, and worked to death in plantations. Let the sadistic ghouls who wanna hold their weddings and parties at Nottoway find another concentration camp for their happy occasion.”

Fire marshals are still investigating the source of the Nottoway Plantation fire. While it is unclear whether the fire was intentional, it is safe to say that many do not care.

Malcolm Kenyatta, Democratic, chair

DNC’s Malcolm Kenyatta Airs Out David Hogg For Having ‘Casual Relationship With The Truth’

Kenyatta said he tried his hardest to stay out of the conversation but said it was Hogg’s comments that frustrated him and “pushed him over the edge.”

There is animosity brewing among the Democratic National Committee (DNC) as Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta called out his fellow vice chair, David Hogg, over the response to a call for them to run for their positions again, The Hill reported.

During a vote by the DNC’s Credentials Committee on May 12, the group supported a motion to nullify the results of the February 2025 election that resulted in Hogg and Kenyatta being elected vice chairs. Former candidate Kalyn Free argued in a complaint filed months before the election that having a combined ballot for both positions over holding elections separately was a violation of the DNC’s rules.

The committee agreed.

However, Hogg inserted himself in the argument, claiming the decision should be viewed against the recent backlash he received after his group, Leaders We Deserve, openly endorsed Sen. Robert Peters in Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District race. Hogg leaned on “generational change” throughout the Democratic party and claimed he wouldn’t be supporting challenges from supporters of President Donald Trump.

While Kenyatta said he tried his hardest to stay out of the conversation, he said it was Hogg’s comments that frustrated him and “pushed him over the edge.” “David has a very casual relationship with the truth. And he has not been truthful on so many points that have been raised on this show. But David’s first statement out of the gate was, ‘Here’s the Democratic Party doing some maniacal thing to push me out because of what he’s doing with his PAC,’” Kenyatta told MSNBC’s Symone Sanders during an interview.

“David knows that that is not true.”

According to Newsweek, Kenyatta claims Hogg knew in advance about the rules reforms package before speaking publicly about his initiative to elect young leaders. “And then he goes on ‘Bill Maher,’ he goes on wherever he goes, and says that these reforms are a way to muzzle me. So how do you say to people that I’m going to reform the Democratic Party when you have such a tenuous connection to the facts,” Kenyatta asked.

On X, Pennsylvania’s 181st district representative expressed frustration over even having to address the elephant in the room instead of doing the work for the people, as the Republican party is seeking to get rid of Medicaid.

A number of supporters thanked Kenyatta for being transparent and not allowing Hogg to create a different narrative. “Proud of you for speaking up and not letting him own the narrative. You deserved better, but also understand the assignment. Keep your head up!,” @tify330 wrote.

Despite Kenyatta speaking out, Hogg said he refuses to go “back-and-forth” about the situation and doesn’t take what people say personally, “even if they try to make it personal.” “This is purely about a strategic disagreement and should be treated as such because we’re all on the same side here,” he said.

“It’s about how do we create the strongest Democratic Party possible?”

Return To Office Or Go: Does Your Employer Want To Lay You Off On The Sly?

Stealth layoffs are on the rise, some experts say.

Is your job’s return to office (RTO) mandate a sneaky way to push employees out? Some experts and employees believe so. Aki Ito, Chief Correspondent at Business Insider, was initially skeptical of the theory. However, after observing recent company trends, the perspective shifted.

“For years, I didn’t take the theory seriously: It struck me as incredibly cynical. Besides, it didn’t make any sense from a business perspective. What company in its right mind would risk a mass exodus just to save a few dollars on severance packages? But over the past year, I’ve started to wonder if the cynics are right.” Ito wrote in Business Insider.

Ito recalls when Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced its new RTO policy last year. AWS employees made headlines when they pushed back on the policy. In a letter addressed to the company’s CEO, Matt Garman, employees described the policy as unfair and “non-data-driven” while passive-aggressively threatening their job security.

“By rigidly mandating a 5-day in-office culture and telling employees who cannot or will not contribute to the company’s mission in this specific way that ‘there are other companies around,’ you are silencing critical perspectives and damaging our culture and our future in doing so,” the letter obtained by Business Insider reads.

Andy Jassy, CEO of AWS’s parent company, Amazon CEO denies the allegations that the RTO policy is an underhanded layoff tactic. But Dan Schawbel, managing partner at Workplace Intelligence, says that companies would be unlikely to admit to stealth layoff practices publicly

“Companies would never come out and say it because of legal implications,” Schawbel told NBC Make It! “A company might use a return to office mandate as an opportunity to restructure its workforce, he told the outlet.

According to a report from BambooHR that surveyed companies on the return to office (RTO) trend, researchers found that 18 percent of human resource professionals and 25 percent of C-suite executives hoped aggressive RTO policies would lead to some voluntary turnover. Additionally, the survey found that nearly 30% of employees said they would consider quitting if their job implemented RTO policies.

Gervonta Davis, Lamont Roach Rematch Set For August 16 In Las Vegas

The boxing match will be streamed live on Prime Video Pay-Per-View

After a controversial outcome for the last time boxers Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach met, ending in a majority draw, a date has been given for the rematch.

The boxing contest will take place on August 16 and will be streamed live on Prime Video pay-per-view in Las Vegas, although the venue has not been announced yet.

The Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach rematch will take place on Aug 16th in Las Vegas, sources tell The Ring’s Mike Coppinger.”

According to Boxing Scene, the first fight, which took place in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center, featured a controversial action inside the ring that may have taken the victory away from Roach. In the ninth round of the boxing match on March 1, Roach connected with a jab to Davis’ face, and the fighter took a knee, essentially calling a timeout. In a regular fight, when a boxer takes a knee, a point is typically deducted, and the referee, Steve Willis, did not deduct a point and allowed Davis to get a timeout, which drew a protest from Roach’s corner and boxing fans worldwide.

The match was a close one, and when the final tally was counted, Davis won with scores from the three judges of 115-113 for Davis from one judge and a split score of 114-114 from the other two judges. If Willis had counted the taking of the knee (which would have been equivalent to a knockdown) and deducted the point, Roach would have won with the extra point he felt he should have been awarded, thereby winning on the other judges’ scorecard.

Roach did tell the media outlet that he will have his hands raised this time around when the rematch takes place.

“Man, I’m so excited about this … it’s part two, and it’s time to boogie once again,” Roach said.

Senior Citizens Beware! Social Security At Risk Amid Trump’s Student Loan Garnishment Plan

Student loan debt among the older generation has increased at eye-opening rates.

As several younger borrowers loathe President Donald Trump’s Department of Education (DOE)  garnishing their money for student loans, the baby boomer generation and beyond fall into the category, with their Social Security checks at risk, the Associated Press reports.

Thousands of older Americans with student loans going back decades now have to concern themselves with their Social Security checks being garnished by the administration. Borrowers like Christine Farro, 73, had their payments and interest paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, like others who experienced financial hardship.

Now, Farro has to anticipate her checks being garnished, something she experienced before, as DOE announced “involuntary collections” of paychecks, tax refunds, and Social Security retirement and disability benefits. “I worked ridiculous hours. I worked weekends and nights. But I could never pay it off,” the retired child welfare worker from Santa Ynez, California, said.

Student loan debt among the older generation has increased at eye-opening rates. In 2025 alone, close to 452,000 people aged 62 and older identify as having student loans in default and are likely to fall victim to DOE’s new policies. Growing tuition rates are partly to blame as more people seeking higher education are forced to borrow larger sums.

Data from the National Consumer Law Center revealed that Americans aged 60 and older hold approximately $125 billion in student loans, a major increase from 20 years ago. As a result, between 6,200 and 192,300 beneficiaries of Social Security have had their payments garnished by 3,000% between 2001 and 2019.

Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Policy Rich Williams points out how the “federal government has very powerful collection tools,” as the attack on borrowers at any age can be considered a burden. However, according to Bankrate, the effects on quality of life are more damaging for older people.

Data from the consumer financial services company’s most recent Money and Mental Health Survey found that 40% of boomers, aged 60 to 78, feel money has negative effects on their mental health. “For me, the impact had become more psychological and emotional than a true financial burden,” borrower Lori Stone, 65, said.

“I came to assume I’d be paying them until I died.”

Braxton Brewington of the Debt Collective debtors says older borrower debt should be canceled, as he witnessed a number of them at protests for student debt cancellation. He feels a number of them fell victim to a system “riddled with flaws and illegalities and flukes.”

While DOE Secretary Linda McMahon claims collections are a necessary step for debtors, “both for the sake of their own financial health and our nation’s economic outlook,” the collection process may have started regardless of who was elected president in 2024.

Federal law only protects $750 of Social Security benefits from being garnished, which would put a borrower well below the poverty line.

Calling All Lovers: Tamar Braxton And October London Bring The Heat To The ATL

R&B is alive and thriving—and the mics are on.

R&B sensations October London and Tamar Braxton hit the stage in Atlanta on May 15, as part of their Calling All Lovers Tour with special guest Ro James. The singers performed for a sold-out audience at the Cobb Energy Centre. Sponsored by the Black Promoters Collective, the concert treated fans to a night filled with powerhouse vocals, romance, nostalgia, and a touch of comedy.

Ro James was the first to grace the stage, showcasing his signature style in a grey satin short set and a black hat. He had the ladies swooning in their seats as he performed some of his cult classic tunes like “Burn Slow.” The crooner rounded out his set, which lasted about 30 minutes, with his Grammy-nominated hit “Permission.”

Next, Tamar Braxton took the stage, looking ethereal in a metallic gold corseted mini dress and waist-length jet black tresses. Braxton opened with “Angels & Demons,” a song from the Calling All Lovers album, as she celebrated its 10th anniversary. Tamar engaged the audience with her quick-witted commentary and signature lip-popping, reminding everyone why she became the breakout star when she appeared on WE TV’s Braxton Family Values with her four sisters.

The songstress paid tribute to her sister Traci, who died in 2022 of esophageal cancer. Tamar left the stage as a photo of Traci appeared on a marquee, with the late singer’s single “Last Call” playing.

The “Let Me Know” singer reemerged wearing a black thong leotard, sparking an uproar from the audience.

“I’m single,“ she quipped, causing the audience to erupt into laughter.

There were approximately a dozen “Tamaritans” joining the singer on stage. The Tamar superfans won a raffle, and the prize was the opportunity to sit at tables on each side of the stage for an up-close and personal experience. Braxton passed the mic to some of her onstage guests as she closed her set with the chart-topping song “Love and War.” Most of the Tamaritans belted out unapologetically off-key, yet hilarious renditions of the music.

Wearing a tailored grey suit and dark shades, October London opened his hour-long set with a soul-stirring rendition of “Slander My Name” that would lead one to believe Marvin Gaye was behind the microphone. The singer displayed impressive vocal range, transitioning effortlessly from a D’Angelo-like falsetto to deep tenor tones reminiscent of Barry White.

James’ background singers were the icing on the cake. The three-woman group, called The Shindellas, wore identical long black dresses as they showcased their imperial harmonies while executing precise, choreographed steps. As James took a breather, the Shindellas performed a mini-medley, including a cover of Zhane’s “Hey Mr. DJ.” Meanwhile, James sat at a makeshift bar on the side of the stage, smoking a cigar and taking sips of his October London premium whiskey.

The night’s surprise was when London brought his friend, Tyrese, to the stage. The R&B legend was all smiles as the audience serenaded him with his song “Sweet Lady.” The actor initially shied away from the microphone, but when the audience pleaded for a taste of his velvety smooth voice, he eventually obliged. Tyrese  belted a snippet of his ballad “What I’m Gonna Do.”

October London closed the night with an energetic performance that mixed modern sounds with an old-school flair and left the audience begging for more.

The Calling All Lovers Tour runs through June 1. Visit the Black Promoters website for information and tickets.

Black Residents ‘Displaced By Design’ In ATL Gentrification War

Atlanta is no longer a majority-Black city and it is not alone.

A new report shows Atlanta is a hotspot for extreme gentrification.

Over the past five decades, a mass infiltration of new residents has led to the displacement of thousands of Black residents. The National Community Reinvestment Coalition’s (NCRC) study, “Displaced By Design: Fifty Years of Gentrification and Black Cultural Displacement in U.S. Cities,” finds that between 1980 and 2020, Atlanta saw 155 formerly majority-Black neighborhoods flip to majority-white residents.

The city has the second-highest total number of neighborhoods among major metro areas after Washington, D.C.

During that period, the city lost an estimated 22,000 Black residents in the gentrification of the Fourth Ward, East Atlanta, and Kirkwood, according to the report.

Gentrification in Atlanta intensified the most from 2000 to 2012, driven by rising incomes, rising property values, and a larger college-educated population. The NCRC analysis tracks these gentrification shifts by measuring increases in per-capita income, home values, and residents with bachelor’s degrees. Some homeowners benefit from increased equity in their homes. At the same time, many long-term residents faced rising rents and property taxes that forced them to relocate.

“Gentrification often brings new investment, but without protections for existing residents, it erodes cultural identity and deepens inequality,” the report states.

New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and the San Francisco Bay Area are the cities most affected by racial gentrification, but Atlanta stands out for the severity of its neighborhood transformations.

According to the report, “From 1980 to 2020, more than 523 majority-Black neighborhoods nationwide experienced gentrification, and about 261,000 fewer Black residents now live in those areas.”

One notable city is New Orleans. Its deep culture is shared by Black and white people alike. Still, many would credit Black contributors as a major force in shaping the unique American city.

Those Black contributors, New Orleans natives, are victims of economic and racial violence in the form of gentrification. This process became extremely rapid after the failings of the government, both local and federal, following Hurricane Katrina.

The city was already struggling due to redlining, rising housing costs, and affordable housing availability. After Katrina’s destruction, the crisis became worse.

“We missed an opportunity post-Katrina because there was no comprehensive plan about how we would ensure that renters had housing options,” said Cashauna Hill of the Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center to 4WWL. “Instead, we spent the money to build up neighborhoods that were already gentrifying without protecting long-term residents.”

The city is approaching the 20th anniversary of the catastrophe. It also ranks fifth on the list of cities with the highest gentrification. However, no major strides have been made in creating opportunities for natives to gain a foothold in the city.

Unfortunately, residents of Atlanta and New Orleans are not alone. Black displacement approaches half a million people. Policy experts say targeted measures, such as property tax freezes for longtime homeowners, community land trusts and stronger tenant protections, are essential to prevent further loss of Black cultural heritage.

Cassie Claims Seeing Diddy At Prince’s House Led To Her Leave

She claims Diddy then followed her to her hotel room, where "he beat me up."

On the third day of the Sean “Diddy” Combs trial, his former girlfriend, Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, revealed that she left recording artist Prince’s house after discovering he was also there.

According to People, while on the witness stand in a Manhattan federal courtroom, Cassie testified that she was looking forward to a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience of seeing Prince perform at his house. But Diddy’s presence forced her to flee the premises once she arrived.

She explained that she was having dinner with friends when the chance to see the Purple Rain artist arose. She said she did not want to let Diddy know she was going because she feared “he would say no.”

After arriving at Prince’s home, she noticed some BET executives and saw Diddy. When she knew he was there, she realized that he saw her and was not happy with her.

“I caught a glimpse of him, left the party, and ran out as fast as I could,” she testified. “I knew he was angry at me.” His facial expressions revealed his anger, “and then he came after me.”

Cassie testified that she fell into the bushes outside Prince’s house while running away.

She made it back to the Beverly Hills Hotel, where she was staying, and said that the No Way Out recording artist burst into her hotel room.

“We went into the bedroom and he beat me up,” Cassie said. “He threw luggage at me, calling me all kinds of names.”

Diddy is on trial after being charged with five criminal counts of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. If the music executive is convicted, he could face a life sentence.
