Uncertainty Surrounds Suge Knight’s Retrial Amid Lawyer’s Attempt To Withdraw From His Case

“Your motion to withdraw has been denied, and I stand by that ruling,” Judge Long said on April 21.

Suge Knight’s upcoming retrial in a wrongful death case related to the 2015 hit-and-run death of Terry Carter faces uncertainty, as his lawyer seeks to withdraw from the case.

David Kenner has asserted for the past three weeks that he is unprepared to retry the case, according to Rolling Stone. In 2022, the jury deadlocked 7 to 5 in favor of finding Knight liable; however, California civil law requires a unanimous verdict, or a nine-to-zero vote, for a judgment to be rendered.

“I am not ready because I’ve had a remedial breakdown in communication with Mr. Knight,” Kenner stated, per Rolling Stone. “There’s a conflict of interest. It is my position that the court should relieve me as counsel, and Mr. Knight should be able to try this case with counsel of his choice.”

Kenner also alleged that Knight made a “disturbing” comment during a recent call, prompting his request to be released from the case. He further claimed that Knight has not paid him for his work in the 2022 trial.

Judge Thomas Long denied Kenner’s motion.

“Your motion to withdraw has been denied, and I stand by that ruling,” Judge Long said on April 21. “It seems to me there’s no reason you can’t do the best you can to cross-examine and examine witnesses and present Mr. Knight’s defense as well as possible. Of course, Mr. Knight is always free to remove you as counsel anytime he chooses. That’s up to him.”

Knight interrupted the proceedings, detailing his communication issues with Kenner.

“I’m trying to communicate on the phone, and no one takes my phone calls. I’m not trying to be disrespectful, I just want to have a fair trial, and I need to communicate,” Knight claimed. “Over the weekend, I would call, and nobody ever takes my calls. If the court could let Mr. Kenner know I called to talk, and we need to communicate.”

Kenner stated that the reason for not taking the calls was that the line was being recorded. The judge granted Knight and Kenner one strictly privileged, unrecorded call at the end of each court day.

The former record executive is currently incarcerated at a San Diego prison, serving a 28-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter in connection with Carter’s death.

DHL Suspends Global Shipments Over $800 To U.S. Consumers

The trade war has forced DHL Express to suspend shipments to U.S. consumers on packages over $800.

DHL Express is suspending global business-to-consumer shipments over $800 to U.S. customers, citing extended clearance times caused by recent changes in U.S. customs regulations.

The global shipping giant, headquartered in Germany, announced the move on its website just one day before it took effect on April 21, Reuters reports. DHL blames the suspension on new U.S. customs regulations requiring formal entry processing for all shipments over $800—a significant shift from the previous $2,500 threshold that changed on April 5.

The change has led to “multi-day transit delays,” DHS said in a notice, forcing the company to suspend service temporarily.

“This change has caused a surge in formal customs clearances, which we are handling around the clock,” the notice said.

Shipments under $800 won’t be affected, and while business-to-business deliveries will continue, they may experience significant delays, according to DHS. These are temporary measures in response to ongoing U.S. customs changes under the Trump administration.

“While we are working diligently to scale up and manage this increase, shipments over USD 800 — regardless of origin — may experience multi-day delays,” the company said.

The move follows DHL’s announcement just a week earlier that it would keep processing shipments from Hong Kong to the U.S. “in accordance with applicable customs rules and regulations,” and that it would assist customers in navigating the changes set for May 2.

The White House is preparing to tighten restrictions on deliveries under $800, particularly those coming from China and Hong Kong, by closing a loophole on May 2 that currently allows low-value packages to enter the U.S. duty-free. Eliminating the so-called “de minimis” rule will directly impact major retailers like fast-fashion brand Shein and budget e-commerce platform Temu, which have both issued warnings of price increases in response to the recent shifts in global trade policies and tariffs.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong Post suspended sea mail services to the U.S., accusing the American government of “bullying” after the Trump administration revoked tariff-free trade privileges for packages from China and Hong Kong. DHL is now among the companies adjusting their shipping services in response to escalating trade tensions, as the U.S.-China trade war intensifies.

Here’s How To Avoid Having Your Phone Searched At The US Border

Border patrol has been conducting smartphone searches to determine entry into the country, but there are ways to avoid having this happen to you

Entering the United States has become significantly more challenging under the second Trump administration. While U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers now have broad authority to search phones and other digital devices to determine who may enter the country, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of having your personal phone searched at the border.

In recent weeks, several travelers have reported being questioned or denied entry at the U.S. border due to content found on their phones. The increasingly unpredictable nature of border policies under the Trump administration is prompting many to reassess the risks associated with traveling with devices containing sensitive personal information. From refusing the search to traveling with a burner phone, Wired has identified several ways travelers can evade an unwanted phone search at the border.

Refuse the Search, at Your Own Risk

U.S. citizens and green card holders have the right to refuse a device search at the border without being denied entry, although doing so may result in further questioning or temporary confiscation of their devices. Under the current Trump administration, green card holders could potentially face new consequences for refusing a search. Visa holders and foreign visitors could be detained or even deported.

“Not everybody has the same risk profile,” said Molly Rose Freeman Cyr, a member of Amnesty International’s Security Lab. “A person’s legal status, the social media accounts that they use, the messaging apps that they use, and the contents of their chats” can all factor into their risk assessment.

Turn Off Biometric Features to Unlock Your Device

If you choose to refuse a phone search, consider disabling biometric unlock features, such as facial recognition or fingerprint scanners, as CBP officers may use them to access your device. Instead, secure your phone with a PIN or alphanumeric passcode, and keep your device’s operating system up to date to help protect against forensic cracking tools.

Travel with an Alternate Phone

Another option is to buy a separate phone specifically for travel or wipe and repurpose an old device, as long as it still receives software updates. The goal is to create a clean, stripped-down version of your digital life on your travel phone, ideally using separate communication and social media accounts made just for the trip. That way, if your device is searched, it won’t contain a history of data that could expose your political beliefs, personal connections, or past movements.

“You have to ‘seed’ the device. Use the phone for a day or even for a few hours. It just can’t be clean clean. That’s weird,” said Matt Mitchell, founder of CryptoHarlem, a security and privacy training and advocacy nonprofit. “My recommendation is to make a finsta for travel, because if they ask you what your profile is, how are you gonna say ‘I don’t use any social media’? Many people have a few accounts anyway. One ratchet, one wholesome—add one travel.”

Modify Your Smartphone Before Travel

This means deleting old photos and messages and backing them up elsewhere, clearing out unnecessary apps, and either removing certain apps entirely or signing out of your main accounts and logging in with travel-specific ones.

“I will look at my device and see what apps I need,” said Mohammed Al-Maskati, digital security helpline director at the rights group Access Now. “If I don’t need the app, I just remove it.”

Print a Paper Boarding Pass and Other Travel Documents

This could help keep devices out of sight—and possibly out of mind—during border checks. One smart move is to carry a printed boarding pass or paper copies of any important documents, then power off your phone and tuck it away in your bag before reaching a CBP agent.

“We all need to be recognizing that authorities may scrutinize your online presence, including social media activity and posts you’ve published,” said Danacea Vo, founder of Cyberlixir, a cybersecurity provider for nonprofits and vulnerable communities. “Since people have gotten more vocal on social media, they’re very worried about this. Some have even decided not to risk traveling to or from the U.S this year.”

British Man Wraps Up First Date With Wild High-Speed Chase That Injures Seven Officers

The young man later drove again despite a ban from driving as part of his bail conditions

A 20-year-old British man may not be getting a second date after his first one ended in a serious high-speed police chase.

On April 9, Mazyar Azarbonyad was dropping his date off after their night out when police officers in Northern England tried to stop him over a broken taillight.

Instead of pulling over, Azarbonyad took off in his BMW, beginning a high-speed chase through the Tyneside area.

The chase ended in a near-fatal crash involving five police vehicles around 2:30 a.m. local time. BBC News confirmed that an unmarked police car collided with Azarbonyad’s near-stopped vehicle at 80 mph. Another police car reportedly had its roof torn off. Seven officers were injured.

In court, Azarbonyad, a personal trainer, said he took off because he did not have insurance at the time of the incident and the woman with him had cannabis. In England, cannabis is illegal for recreational use.

Despite being banned to drive following the crash, Azarbonyad admitted to getting behind the wheel again days later. The man, who immigrated from Iran at age 15, also drove unlicensed as well.

The ban from driving was part of his bail conditions following the police chase and subsequent crash. Since Azarbonyad willfully ignored the stipulations of his release, police arrested him again.

His attorney, Jack Lovell, said Azarbonyad, who pleaded guilty, had genuine remorse for his “very foolish” actions and that his client was panicked when police approached him during the stop.

“I am not in any way trying to excuse—he should not have been driving the vehicle; it is his driving that has led to the incident on the A1 [road],” Lovell said.

However, prosecutors refused to hear claims of Azarbonyad’s regrets, especially as he continued driving after the ordeal.

Prosecutor Simon Worthy said, “One would have thought as a matter of common sense…that you would have been a bit more sensible about your activities, having been so lucky to get out of an accident only two days before…But no, no, you continue to stick two fingers up.”

Azarbonyad was granted conditional bail for this recent instance and will be sentenced on May 20.

Beehive Members Defend Beyoncé Over ‘Offensive’ Allegations Of Mocking Traditional Haka Dance In Resurfaced Video

Stan Walker, an Austrian musician and singer who led the Haka, said the singer was surprised by the dance.

Members of the Beyhive are defending singer Beyoncé Knowles-Carter after a 2013 video resurfaced, accusing the pop star of “offensively” mocking a traditional Polynesian war dance.

The video shows Queen Bey being greeted by a group of men performing the Haka dance backstage following an October 2013 show of her “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour” in Auckland, New Zealand. The choreographed movements are known as Haka, a traditional Polynesian war dance performed primarily by Māori, indigenous Polynesians of New Zealand’s mainland, during cultural ceremonies or to show respect to distinguished guests

https://twitter.com/Soulful1865/status/1755520484085465497

When Beyoncé was seen making expressions similar to the performers’ and wagging her tongue, things took a left turn in social media comment sections. One user called it the “most cringiest shit I’ve ever watched” in the comment section of a now-deleted Instagram post. Other users called Bey’s response “offensive” and accused her of mocking traditions.

However, it wasn’t long before Beyhive members jumped in to defend the clip from over a decade ago, arguing that the Grammy-winning artist was showing mutual respect.

“She is not being disrespectful. She is mirroring them doing the haka out of mutual respect,” one user said. “No cultural appropriation here! She is clearly feeling the intense mana, and I’m sure she loved the kind gesture.”

On X, fans praised how Beyoncé embraced the gesture and accused people of just looking for a reason to bash the “Cowboy Carter” singer.

“At the end, you can see that she was deeply moved and honored by that haka. Love this,” @agent5792 said.

When the video first surfaced, Mrs. Carter was celebrated for bringing the show to the country with E! News reporting it set a new record for the highest audience attendance at Vector Arena for a solo artist.

The people who weren’t offended by Beyoncé’s response were the men featured in the video. Stan Walker, an Austrian musician and singer who led the Haka, said the singer was surprised by the dance and said there was nothing but a spirit of deep respect for her in the room.

Lioness Kills 14-Year-Old Girl In Kenya After Snatching Her From Compound

The Kenya Wildlife Service is calling for 'human-wildlife conflict mitigation' after a lioness killed a 14-year-old girl in Nairobi

A 14-year-old girl was killed by a lioness on April 19 after being taken from her residential compound on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed the death, saying the child was snatched from her compound on a ranch next to Nairobi National Park, BBC reports. Another teenager witnessed the attack and quickly raised the alarm.

“KWS rangers and response teams were swiftly mobilized and traced bloodstains leading to the Mbagathi River, where the girl’s body was recovered with injuries on the lower back,” the conservation agency said in a statement “The lion was not sighted at the scene.”

KWS has set traps and deployed search teams to capture the animal. The agency said extra security measures have been put in place to prevent further incidents. While human-lion conflicts over livestock are relatively common in Kenya, fatal attacks on people remain rare.

On the same day as the lion attack, a 54-year-old man was fatally injured by an elephant in Nyeri County, 80 miles north of Nairobi. The elephant, which had been grazing in Mere Forest, charged the man, leaving him with severe chest injuries, fractured ribs, and internal trauma.

“KWS conveys its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and continues to work closely with local law enforcement and communities to enhance the safety of people living near protected wildlife areas,” it said in the statement.

The agency is urging enhanced “human-wildlife conflict mitigation,” emphasizing the need for early warning systems and stronger cooperation with impacted communities.

Paula Kahumbu, head of the WildlifeDirect conservation group, wants Kenya Wildlife Service to improve “risk assessments and ensure accurate, real-time communication of wildlife movement and behavior, especially in known high-risk areas such as Savannah Ranch,” where the girl was killed.

Nairobi National Park, located just six miles from the city center, is home to wildlife including lions, buffalo, giraffes, leopards, and cheetahs. The park is fenced on three sides to prevent animals from entering the city, while the southern boundary remains open to allow for animal migration in and out of the area.

‘Sinners’ Stars Michael B. Jordan And Wunmi Mosaku Are Swoonworthy In Viral ‘Meet Cutes NYC’ Promo

Both actors spoke about their experiences working with each other in 'Sinners'

Actors Michael B. Jordan and Wunmi Mosaku gave each other their “flowers” as acting colleagues in a viral episode of TikTok’s Meet Cutes NYC

The actors, who play love interests in Ryan Coogler’s box-office smash thriller Sinners, were stopped by the unidentified cameraman to answer how they first met. The social media account is known for stopping random couples on the streets of New York City to reveal the story of their first encounter and how their relationship started.

While Jordan and Mosaku admitted that they aren’t a couple in real life, they did speak on their chemistry during filming and auditions.

When the cameraman asked Mosaku, who plays Annie in the film, what her first impression was of the heartthrob, she said he was “sweet,” “so encouraging and lovely.”

“Like it’s Michael B. Jordan,” she said, while Jordan seemingly blushed.

“She’s so giving as a scene partner, and umm, so generous,” Jordan, who plays the dual characters of Smoke and Stack, said. “There’s a lot of chemistry that was there.”

The Nigerian-born British actress said her favorite thing about working with Jordan was that “he doesn’t take anything for granted, he really encourages everyone to find their passion and go forward with it.”

When it was Jordan’s turn, he mentioned her “intensity” in Sinners and how the actress “always rises to the occasion.”

“I want her to have the world,” the 38-year-old said. “I want her to be as ambitious as possible. I want her to take risks, get out of her comfort zone. I want her to do all the things she wants to do, like nothing stopping her, nothing holding her back. Just do it.”

During the Sinners press tour, Mosaku highlighted how it felt to not only work with Jordan but the other Black male members of the cast, including Coogler. In an interview with Essence, the BAFTA-nominated actress calling Coogler’s artistry “profound and necessary.” She also called the musical talent of Preacher Boy, played by Miles Caton, “the heartbeat of the story.”

Jordan changed clothes to make another appearance on the TikTok channel, only this time as Stack with his love interest Mary, played by Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld.

Married Student Loan Borrowers Get Break After Education Dept. Clarifies Statements

Under federal law, married borrowers who file taxes jointly with their spouse and are enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan will have their payments calculated based on their combined income. However, couples who file separately from their spouses will have their payments calculated based solely on their salaries

The Trump administration is walking back previous statements suggesting there would be significant changes to married student loan borrowers who filed separately, which could have resulted in higher student loan payments.

Following confusing statements from the Department of Education, the agency clarified that spousal income would not be a factor in calculating income-driven repayment plans for now.

Under federal law, married borrowers who file taxes jointly with their spouse and are enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan will have their payments calculated based on their combined income. However, couples who file separately from their spouses will have their payments calculated based solely on their salaries.  Filing separately, however, comes with a cost, and couples could miss out on key deductions.

Education Dept. Creates Confusion For Married Student Loan Borrowers

In an ongoing legal battle, the Trump administration temporarily halted the income-driven repayment (IDR) system after a federal appeals court issued a new decision regarding the SAVE Plan, according to Forbes.

President Joe Biden implemented the Student Aid and Verification Enhancement (SAVE) program to reduce borrowers’ monthly payments and expedite student loan forgiveness for certain borrowers.

SAVE has been blocked since 2024, and a federal appeals court’s recent ruling expanded the injunction to block SAVE to include all the programs under it, including IDR. The Department of Education said that ruling necessitated the shutdown of IDR, as the agency requires time to update the IDR application.

Amid the legal battle, a Department of Education official filed a statement to the court indicating that spousal income would be factored into monthly payments regardless if married couples filed separately.

According to First for Women, the original statement read, “Education expects that by May 10, 2025, servicers will implement the treatment of spousal information for ICR, PAYE, and IBR such that married borrowers filing separate income tax returns or separated from their spouses will have spousal income counted for the purposes of calculating monthly payment amount under IDR plans, which is a required consequence of the Eighth Circuit’s opinion directing a broadened preliminary injunction.”

The statement was corrected this week and removes any mention of spousal income for couples who file separately.

Shannon Sharpe Reveals X-Rated Texts After Being Accused Of Sexual Assault In $50M Lawsuit

Shannon Sharpe revealed raunchy texts to counter a woman's $50 million sexual assault lawsuit against him

Shannon Sharpe’s legal team has released explicit text messages to counter the explosive sexual assault allegations made against the former NFL hall of famer-turned sports commentator.

The ESPN analyst released a lengthy statement crafted by his attorney, Lanny J. Davis, on April 21 that includes raunchy texts the accuser, who is only identified as Jane Doe in the lawsuit, allegedly sent to Sharpe asking him to “put a dog collar around my neck” and “tie me up and do bad things to me.”

The messages, from a woman Sharpe’s legal team identified as Gabriella Zuniga, “clearly indicate the nature of their relationship was consensual and sexual in nature—and, in many cases, initiated by her with specific and graphic requests,” Davis said.

The statement followed widespread headlines about the lawsuit filed against Sharpe. In the complaint, the woman Jane Doe alleges Sharpe raped her during what she described as a “rocky consensual relationship” marked by physical force and emotional distress.

She claims Sharpe became increasingly controlling, verbally abusive, and violent, allegedly threatening to kill her and recording their sexual encounters without her consent.

“Sharpe flew into fits of anger when Plaintiff noted his infidelity to their relationship or called him out about his extraneous activities,” the lawsuit said. “Sharpe even figured out how to get into Doe’s apartment complex without her permission.”

However, according to Sharpe, the relationship was consensual, and the lawsuit, filed by Zuniga and attorney Tony Buzbee, is just a “blatant and cynical attempt to shake down” the sports star for “millions of dollars.” In Sharpe’s response, he outlines the consensual relationship he had with the accuser until Jan. 2, 2025 — the day after she allegedly she this text message, which was part of 44 pages of texts released by Sharpe’s legal team:

“I know u miss this big juicy a**…$25k for each cheek.”

According to the civil complaint, Sharpe met the plaintiff in 2023 at a Los Angeles gym when she was 19 years old; Sharpe is 56. Her lawsuit says tensions between the pair escalated after Sharpe was allegedly heard having sex with another woman during an Instagram Live in September 2024.

In a series of messages dated December 26, 2024, she demanded a “formal apology” and continued pressing for one. At one point, Sharpe allegedly responded, “I’ve already apologized. Stop playing childish [games].”

The accuser doubled down on April 22, with leaked audio where Sharpe allegedly threatened to choke her during a phone conversation.

This marks another high-profile for attorney Buzbee, following his recent unsuccessful lawsuit against Jay-Z on behalf of a woman who later recanted her claims of being raped by the rapper and Sean “Diddy” Combs after the, 2000 VMAs.

Like Jay-Z, Sharpe is pushing back against the allegations.

Kai Cenat Criticized For Not Condemning Asian Influencer For Racist Jokes About Black People

Cenat has not said anything yet

Twitch streamer Kai Cenat is facing backlash for not responding to a friend who made racist jokes about Black people.

Chein-Ruei “Ray” Hsu, the Taiwanese influencer known as “raysasianboy” on social media, went viral during a recent livestream, saying that there are “two different” types of Black people: a Black person and the other, “the hard r,” a thinly veiled reference to the racial slur.

An X user reposted the original footage.

He then told the Black guy sitting down with him, who Hsu calls his friend, that he is the “hard r.”

“Some people, they’re just a Black guy,” explained Hsu about the other group. ” They look nice, they look good…they eat f-cking biscuit.”

After his friend questioned his description of him, Hsu doubled down on the assertion that he’s the lesser type of Black person.

“You the type of one that’s like ‘hard r.’ All my friends hard r,” the streamer replied.

While Hsu faced significant backlash over his racist words, Cenat has remained silent on the issue. Given his known friendship with Hsu, fans of Cenat have called out the popular influencer’s refusal to comment.

Moreover, they explained that Cenat has allowed Hsu to feel comfortable making discriminatory comments against Black people.

“What is Ray even saying,” questioned an X user. ” I think Kai got Ray way too comfortable now.”

Another stated that Hsu thought that his own identity as a person of color excused his racist thoughts.

“Yall gone keep letting these non-black people play in yall face,” stated the commenter.

Meanwhile, Cenat has posted footage of him standing up to racist comments hurled at his friend. One video, posted last June, showed Cenat calling out a random man who spewed offensive words at Hsu.

With this in mind, Cenat evidently has no problem standing up against racist hate. Whether her holds his friends to the same standards remains to be seen.
