Voletta Wallace, Mother Of The Notorious B.I.G., Dies At 72

Voletta Wallace, the mother of The Notorious B.I.G., passed away at 72.

Voletta Wallace, the mother of the Notorious B.I.G., has died at 72.

She passed away Friday morning while receiving hospice care in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, according to Monroe County Coroner Thomas Yanac. Her death was attributed to natural causes, as reported by TMZ.

A Jamaica native, Wallace welcomed Biggie with Jamaican welder and politician Selwyn George Latore, who left the family when her son was just two years old. She raised him as a single mother in their brownstone apartment in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, while working as a preschool teacher.

For years, Wallace was a strong advocate for her son, who was murdered in 1997. She managed his estate and worked to ensure his legacy and wealth were passed on to his family, including his daughter, T’yanna Wallace, and his son, Christopher Wallace Jr., whom he had with singer Faith Evans.

Under her management, Biggie’s estate grew from $10 million at the time of his death to the $160 million it is worth today. Wallace used her voice and platform to champion her son, being present in any and everything involving his name and using her social media to share his accolades, including his foundation, streaming numbers, pop culture references, and tributes.

When she released her memoir, “Biggie: Voletta Wallace Remembers Her Son, Christopher Wallace, aka Notorious B.I.G.” in 2005, Wallace explained the importance of telling his story and ensuring his legacy lived on.

“He has touched so many people and so many people loved him and, you know, still do,” she said.

“That cannot take my pain away. What I am feeling inside is like a 100-pound lead weighing down in my chest. It’s very cold, and it’s very heavy, and I am so dying to get rid of it. But it’s not something you can get rid of because that was my son. He was my baby. I am a mother, and I will always be a mother.”

In 2009, she worked as a producer on the biopic Notorious, in which Angela Bassett played her role. In a 2009 interview, she shared that she visited the set daily and was left feeling angry by the final film due to its many revelations about her son.

“[The film] made me angry, made me sad. I learned a lot… about my son — a lot that I never knew. But I still love him because he was from here [gestures to heart].”

One of her final public tributes to her late son took place in 2022 when she joined Biggie’s children, Lil’ Kim and Lil’ Cease, to change the Empire State Building’s colors to red and white to celebrate his 50th birthday.

New ‘Protector’ App Launched In LA And NYC Offers Riders A Safe ‘Uber With Guns’

A new app offers the average person a chance to book security detail for their transportation.

A new app has entered the market, allowing riders to book rides with former military or law enforcement professionals who are armed and prepared to ensure their safety.

The rideshare app Protector is now available on the iOS and Mac App Store, allowing users to book security details while on the go. Former Meta product manager Nikita Bier, creator of the social networking app Gas, revealed that he has served as an adviser to Protector and took to X, where he described the app as “Uber with guns.”

“Over the last few months, I’ve been advising Protectors: a new app for ordering an on-demand security detail,” Bier tweeted. “Or more simply: Uber with guns.”

Currently available only in LA and NYC, the newly launched app allows users to choose the number of “protectors” they want in their ride, KTLA reports. Riders can also select from four dress code options: Business Formal, which is a traditional suit; Business Casual, which is a lighter suit without a tie; Tactical Casual, where the driver sports a polo shirt with tactical pants and shoes; or Operator, where the armed professional dons full SWAT-style attire.

Users can also select as many as three vehicles to drive in motorcade format like a government official or celebrity. The service comes at a high price, with a single Cadillac Escalade ride featuring one ‘protector’ costing $1,000 for a pickup at KTLA’s Hollywood newsroom at 6 p.m. on Saturday, according to the app.

This fee covers a minimum of five hours of protection, the shortest duration available for booking. There is also an annual member fee of $129.

The app posted a promotional video in January that showed the assassination of the UnitedHealthcare CEO to demonstrate the value of the Protector service.

“Now, we are going to run through a scenario where if a Protector had been present, crisis could have been averted,” the video’s voiceover says.

Since its announcement, Protector has become the 14th most popular app in the Travel category, positioned behind the Frontier Airlines app but ahead of the Spirit Airlines app.

Bishop T.D. Jakes Adamantly Rebukes Sexual Assault Claims Made By Former Pastors

'Every person has a breaking point. I have reached mine.'

Megachurch pastor and popular spiritual leader T.D. Jakes is fighting back against claims of sexual assault from former pastors in a new defamation lawsuit, The Christian Post reports.

In a motion to dismiss the litigation, Jakes and his legal team are “aggressively” challenging his accuser’s credibility in a filing that includes an eight-page affidavit from the pastor claiming the claims made against him are “malicious lies.”

Former pastor Duane Youngblood and pastor Richard Edwin Youngblood have accused Jakes of sexually assaulting them when they were younger.

Richard Edwin Youngblood claims the Potter’s House founder allegedly attempted to sexually assault him while the two shared a hotel room during a ministry trip years ago.

“He secured a room with two beds in it, and we went to the room for the night. That night, while I was lying in my bed, I felt Elder Jakes climb into my bed. He pressed his body against mine and asked, ‘Youngblood, do you feel that?’ He was referencing his erection that he was pressing against my backside,” Youngblood wrote in his affidavit.

“I got up out of bed in complete shock as he also [got] up from the opposite side and met me. He grabbed me by my arms, and pulled me to him and started trying to kiss me. At this point, I cannot believe what is happening to me.”

According to Houston Chron, Duane Youngblood, now 58, is accusing Jakes of assaulting him in a private home, writing in a statement, “As I prepared to leave, he pulled me close and tried to kiss me.” The pastor, Youngbood added, called him the following day. “He wanted me to be the only person he had a sexual relationship with when he came to town.”

In the affidavit, the Dallas-based faith leader denied all the claims that “describe situations where I harbored carnal desires for these men. These statements are knowingly and flagrantly false,” Jakes said in the document.

Duane Youngblood alleged in a motion that since going public and appearing on the Larry Reid Live YouTube talk show, Jakes and members of his team “have engaged in retaliatory conduct to silence him.”

Jakes and his son, Jermaine, deny the allegations.

“For years, I have been counseled to ignore the constant stream of low-level smears against my reputation. However, the emotional and physical toll of this coordinated campaign of lies, designed to damage my reputation and legacy, has become overwhelming,” the elder Jakes said.

“The pain it has caused my wife of 43 years and my five children, whom I have always loved, nurtured, and provided for, is simply too much to bear,” Jakes added. “Every person has a breaking point. I have reached mine. I authorized this lawsuit because I can no longer remain silent.”

School Districts Adopt 4 Day Instructional Week To Attract Educators

Texas school district is the latest in the nation to adopt four-day instructional week.

School districts across the United States are increasingly adopting a four-day instructional week, with the Whitney Independent School District (ISD) in Texas being the latest to make the change.

This shift comes after district leaders surveyed faculty and staff, with an overwhelming majority in favor of reducing the number of student instructional days. As part of the new schedule, students will stay home on Mondays, giving educators an extra day to plan and prepare for the week ahead. The district’s board of trustees approved the change on Feb. 17.

“The results of the survey showed that 94.7% of the staff wanted to move to a four-day instructional week, and 66.7% of the WISD faculty/staff preferred to have Mondays as the off day to allow them to better prepare for the upcoming week of instruction,” said Superintendent Todd Southard in an interview with WNEM.

This shift is part of a larger effort to address a critical shortage of qualified educators. Across the country, many teachers are leaving the profession, and Southard hopes that giving educators more time to handle additional responsibilities—such as lesson planning, grading, and professional development—will help the district attract and retain skilled teachers.

According to Southard, the decline in applicants for teacher education programs is a trend affecting many districts, not just Whitney ISD.

“It has become increasingly difficult to find quality educators, a problem that is not exclusive to Whitney ISD,” Southard said. “All indicators show this problem is only going to get worse, as more and more teachers look to leave the profession, and college teacher preparation programs continue to see a decline in enrollment.”

School districts are looking for innovative solutions to attract new talent to combat this growing issue. Educators have pointed to factors such as low salaries, excessive work hours, large class sizes, and insufficient resources as reasons for their departure.

A National Center for Education Statistics study found that more than 45% of schools across the U.S. report being understaffed.

In response, hundreds of school districts nationwide have started adjusting their instructional schedules to make teaching positions more appealing.

Offering teachers more time for planning and professional growth is hoped to improve retention rates and help recruit new educators into the field. The shift to a four-day week is one of several strategies being tested in the face of the ongoing educator shortage.

Justice For Robert Brooks: 10 Guards Charged In Fatal Beating Death of NY State Prison Inmate

Justice for Robert Brooks!

The path toward justice for Robert Brooks has begun as the 10 former correctional officers were indicted in the killing of New York state prison inmate Robert Brooks, who was seen on video being beaten while handcuffed, ABC News reports.

On Feb. 20, officers appeared before a grand jury as their charges were read. Six of the officers — Nicholas Anzalone, David Kingsley, Anthony Farina, Christopher Walrath, and Mathew Galliher, along with one unnamed defendant — face felony second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter charges. Three of the officers, Michael Fisher, Michael Mashaw, and David Walters, face second-degree manslaughter charges, while Nicholas Gentile received tampering with physical evidence charges.

A criminal indictment accused the former guards of acting in conduct that “created a grave risk of death to another person, and thereby caused the death of Robert Brooks.” The incident made national headlines after body-cam footage was released showing Brooks being beaten while in officer custody after being transferred from the Mohawk Correctional Facility to the Marcy Correctional Facility on Dec. 9, 2024.

Officers were seen holding the 43-year-old up on an exam table, punching and kicking him in the face, private area, and torso while his arms were restrained. The indictment says the beating and assaults were carried out as the defendants acted in concert together. “In addition to the beatings, defendants, with depraved indifference, did nothing to restrain each other, did nothing to stop the beatings, and failed to immediately order medical assistance for Mr. Brooks,” the indictment read.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, whose office is investigating the incident, said Brooks was pronounced dead at a local hospital just one day after the fatal beating.

All officers entered a not guilty plea while at least six made bond, which was set at $250,000 for the murder charges, according to the New York Post. Protestors stood up for Brooks in the courtroom, shouting “murdered, murderer” at the guards as they were escorted in wearing handcuffs. During a news conference, Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said the footage shows a disturbing “sense of normalcy” from the former guards as a medical examiner ruled Brooks died as a result of compression of the neck and multiple blunt-impact injuries. “I think any sentient human being looking at the tapes naturally comes to the conclusion that [Brooks] must have said something. He must have spit at the officers,” Fitzpatrick said.

“He must have resisted in some way. And the fact of the matter is, he did absolutely nothing.”

New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul felt similar sentiments, calling for all the officers—in addition to two sergeants and a nurse who watched the attack and failed to intervene—to be terminated.

Brooks’ son, Robert Jr., said waiting for their day in court has been hard, but he looks forward to witnessing this “step toward accountability.”

“Nothing can bring him back to us. Nothing can return to us what these men have taken away. Still, these indictments are a necessary and important step toward accountability,” the grieving son said.

“These men must be fully prosecuted and convicted for what they have done. But even the convictions of these corrections officers for the murder of my father will not be enough. Every person in authority who allowed this system of violence and abuse to exist and continue for so long must also be held accountable.”

South Fulton’s Mayor Khalid Kamau Denied Name Change To Mayor ‘Kobi’ Due To ‘Open Criminal Case’

Mayor Khalid Kamau already self-identifies as Mayor Kobi. The change, however, will not be legal.

South Fulton Mayor Khalid Kamau, who has been publicly identifying as “Kobi” for several months, was denied his legal petition to change his name.

Kamau, who filed the request in August 2024 with the Fulton County Superior Court, was rejected on Feb. 14. According to FOX reports, the court’s decision was based on a “lack of sufficient information” and Kamau’s “open criminal case.”

This legal setback adds to a series of troubles the mayor has faced over the past year. Kamau is currently under investigation for potential misuse of county funds. His access to government resources, including his office, vehicle, and county budget, has been revoked and reinstated. The mayor is also dealing with an ongoing criminal case concerning a trespassing charge. BLACK ENTERPRISE has been covering these developments surrounding the South Fulton mayor.

Government Lockout

On Feb. 18, 2025, Kamau, who goes by Kobi, was escorted off government property, barred from his office, and denied access to his government vehicle and the county’s budget. The action was taken following an investigation into his alleged misuse of public funds. Speaking to an Atlanta radio station, Kobi described the experience:

“They took my keys. They kicked me out of my office. They kicked my staff out of my office. They took my car,” he said.

In response to the lockout, the city council enacted these measures, citing the ongoing investigation. After a discussion with the city attorney, Kamau was allowed back into the government buildings but remains restricted from accessing the county budget. His government vehicle was not returned.

County Funds Investigation

The investigation into Kamau’s use of county-issued credit cards began in January 2025 after a concerned resident raised questions about his 21-day trip to Ghana during the 2024 holiday season. The constituent wanted to know whether the mayor used personal or public funds for his travel. Channel 2’s investigation uncovered multiple discrepancies, with the mayor allegedly failing to submit proper P-card paperwork and spending records not matching those on file. Kamau has denied any wrongdoing and criticized the county’s failure to conduct a thorough audit.

“First of all, it’s not $26,000. First thing is it’s travel over two years. They’ve done a forensic audit on my card, but they haven’t done one on the other people who have traveled internationally,” Kobi said. “Because some of the trip was personal, I turned down the per diem. I never stayed one night in a hotel, the entire 21 days. I stayed in people’s houses. I stayed with friends. My 21 days in Ghana totals about $7,000,” he added.

The investigation into the mayor’s finances is ongoing.

Trespassing Charge

In July 2023, Kamau was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary and criminal trespassing. According to the mayor, he was touring a home he was considering buying when the homeowner confronted him and held him at gunpoint until police arrived. Kamau claims he believed the property was vacant, and there were no visible “for sale” signs.

Following his release, Kamau thanked the South Fulton Police Department for its handling of the situation. The case remains open.

City Council Lawsuit

Kamau’s tenure in South Fulton’s government dates back to 2017, when the city was chartered. He began his political career on the city council before becoming mayor. However, the city council sued the mayor just a month before the trespassing charge. While the lawsuit does not go into specific details, it accuses Kamau of “violating the city charter.”

The city council’s court filing alleges that Kamau “repeatedly betrayed the confidence of the City and the City Council by intentionally and knowingly disclosing confidential information of the City for his and others’ personal benefit since his election to office.”

These legal and political challenges continue to mount for Mayor Kamau, who has become a controversial figure in South Fulton’s political landscape.

Former Kentucky AG Daniel Cameron Puts In Bid For Senate Seat Amid Mitch McConnell’s Retirement

Hopefully Kentucky will have a change of heart....

Former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron is running for the soon-to-be-vacant U.S. Senate seat after former GOP leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced his retirement.

The failed governor candidate, who unsuccessfully ran for the position in 2023, has been a rising star among the Republican Party, making an appearance at the 2020 GOP Convention. Cameron announced the Senate bid via X, saying, “It’s time for a new generation of leadership.”

Cameron first made his way into the political spotlight as the attorney general, Kentucky’s first Black man to hold the position, who failed to bring expected charges against the police officers who shot and killed Breonna Taylor at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020.

After losing the governor’s seat to Democratic nominee Andy Beshear, Cameron went on to become the CEO of anti-woke group 1792 Exchange.

According to The Hill, after making his announcement, Cameron made an appearance at the White House’s Black History Month celebration on Feb. 20 alongside other notable guests, including Tiger Woods and rapper Kodak Black. Social media reactions to his new political endeavors were seemingly not in his favor. Some Kentucky voters, like @jrfranklin15, said, “Respectfully, no, sir.”

@firefire100 spoke on behalf of Taylor, saying, “Breonna Taylor says no.”

https://twitter.com/firefire100/status/1892624316400881950

Other potential voters alluded to the fact that Cameron was hand-picked by McConnell, so they don’t know if he would be the right pick. Others, including Beshear and Rep. Thomas Massie, were already throwing names of candidates into the ring.

The former AG will be up for a challenge as Rep. Andy Barr (R-Ky.) and businessman Nate Morris claim to be considering campaign launches. Barr has already taken shots at Cameron as he eyes the open position.

In a statement entitled, “Barr Campaign Responds to Failed Candidate Daniel Cameron Jumping in Senate Race,” spokesperson Tyler Staker said the politician “embarrassed” President Donald Trump when he lost to Beshear after Trump endorsed his gubernatorial bid. He compared Cameron’s loss to Barr’s victory, citing when he welcomed Trump to the state for a rally before defeating Amy McGrath.

“When President Trump and Andy Barr teamed up in his 2018 election, they won Kentucky’s toughest Congressional race against Amy McGrath and the Trump resistance,” Staker said.

“When President Trump endorsed Daniel Cameron for Governor, Daniel embarrassed the President and our party by losing in a state that President Trump won by over 30 points — including losing Andy Barr’s district by 19 points.”

If Cameron is successful in his race, he will join a short list of Black Republican senators, including South Carolina lawmaker Tim Scott.

Charleston Police Department’s First Black Female Captain Marks One-Year Anniversary: ‘Anything Is Possible’

Captain Tonatte Mitchell reflects on her journey as the Charleston Police Department's first Black female captain.

One year after Captain Tonatte Mitchell made history as the first Black female captain of the Charleston Police Department, she says, “Anything is possible.”

Mitchell recently reflected on her historic promotion amid her one-year anniversary and credited the accomplishment to hard work and dedication.

“Anything is possible, as long as you work hard and stick to your goals,” Mitchell told ABC News 4.

The Charleston native is helping to carry on her family’s legacy in the CPD as her grandfather, Harold (Harry) Smith, was one of the first Black officers hired by CPD.

“Just watching him patrol the area that gave me the passion for what I do now,” she said. “He paved the way for me, and I know if he wasn’t here, I would’ve never been able to get to this position.”

“He was like, just do your best. That’s all,” Mitchell added. “Those were his words: do your best and be safe. So I’m doing my best and I’m keeping safe.”

Mitchell takes pride in giving back to the community that shaped her. Her greatest achievement in the department was helping establish two community centers, a resource she wishes she had experienced growing up in Charleston.

“When I was growing up, I didn’t have a place to go to that I felt safe that I can have somebody help me with home homework, that I can play games, to interact with law enforcement. I didn’t have that,” she said. “So, in order to be able to accomplish that and open those two centers, one in Gaston Green and the other in Robert Mills Manor, that tops it all.”

She hopes to open more community centers to strengthen the connection between the police department and the community they serve.

“What I want to accomplish is to get more community centers, officers doing more community outreach in the community that they work in, and just bridging that gap between the community and the policing,” she said.

Mitchell originally aspired to become a sergeant and was overwhelmed when she was promoted to captain. Now, a year into the role, she reflects on the humbling experience and the critical need for mentors to guide the next generation of law enforcement officers.

“I’m glad to be a part of being here, to be a part of completing that work that needs to be done in the community and the police department,” said Mitchell. “We still need mentors here. I’m glad I’m here to do that for the new officers that are coming in. And we still need to have work to do in the community, and I’m still gonna be a part of that.”
