Chicago Pastor Hosts ‘World’s Largest Baby Shower’ For 1,000 Moms-To-Be

Expecting mothers from Chicago’s Southside will receive the baby shower of their dreams from a well-known community leader.

Pastor Corey Brooks is planning the “world’s largest baby shower” for moms at New Beginnings Church on Aug. 13, Audacy reports. As founder and CEO of his nonprofit, Project HOOD, Brooks says this event is crucial to help mothers in need. “We wanted to figure out a way to assist and give resources to a lot of these single-parent women who are in need of help with their newborns,” Brooks said. “Eighty percent of the households in our neighborhood are single-parent households. We’re promoting life, and so what better way to do that than assist them with prenatal care?”

The goal is to have 1,000 mothers and 800 have already signed up. With the anticipation of reaching capacity, he is asking the community and others for supply donations and to volunteer on the day of the event. “I’m sure we’re going to make that,” Brooks said. “Whether it’s donating baby items, volunteering time, or offering financial support, every bit helps.”

Project HOOD serves the Southside community, which holds an 80% fatherlessness rate, according to the Southland Journal. The nonprofit hopes that the project will provide much-needed support to the single mothers of that community while at the same time encouraging fathers and extended families to get involved. A recent study shows Black women have the highest maternal death rate across the country, and new mothers need all the help and support they can get.

During the event, mothers and family members will receive baby essentials, educational resources, and mostly importantly, a supportive host of mothers in their same shoes. “This event is more than just a shower; it is a gesture of compassion, unity, and hope,” the pastor said. “We believe that every child deserves a safe and loving environment, and every mother, has the resources and support to provide it.”

Caribbean Mother-Daughter Duo The First To Do Space Travel

Caribbean Mother-Daughter Duo The First To Do Space Travel

In a win for diversity in science, Keisha Schahaff and Anastasia Mayers will become the first mother- daughter duo, and the first from the Caribbean, to travel to space.

AfroTech confirmed the news that their voyage aboard, named the Galactic 02, will be a commercial space flight, the second ever for Virgin Galactic.

Schahaff, a wellness coach, shared that her quest to explore space travel has been a lifelong dream, and her participation in this journey is proof that anyone can see the stars.

“The face that I am here, the first to travel to space from Antigua, shows that space really is becoming more accessible,” she said.

Their inclusion on the space flight will be sponsored by Space for Humanity, which the women won in a draw that raised nearly $2 million for the program to bring more people of all identities to space. The nonprofit was founded in 2017 to improve equity and accessibility in everyday missions beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

Virgin Galactic’s tickets to these otherworldly flights usually range from $250,000 to $450,000, a hefty price tag that’s unaffordable for many. Space for Humanity’s quest to bridge the gap for those of diverse backgrounds to fulfill a dream of space flight is succeeding, and it’s a dream come true for the duo.

Schahaff’s daughter is not only making history as a Antiguan citizen in this shared experience but for her age group as well. Mayers, a college sophomore pursuing a degree in philosophy and physics at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, will become the second youngest voyager to venture to space. This trip will be well-aligned with her studies.

As Black women, their inclusion on this trip signals that once-in-a-lifetime opportunities such as this are possible for anyone who dares to soar higher.

The untraditional family vacation will be a 90-minute venture, but with speeds traveling as high as 2,600 miles per hour, it will surely be an unforgettable one.

Sonya Larson Who Owns Over 1,000 Black Barbies To Appear On HGTV’s ‘Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge’

A Black woman with one of the largest collections of Black Barbies in the country is set to showcase her love for the iconic doll on HGTV.

Sonya Larson, 48, of Olathe, Kansas, has been collecting Black Barbie dolls for over 30 years, according to The Kansas City Star. She has so many dolls that she created a shrine in the basement of her home that she goes to whenever she wants to lift her spirits.

Now her love for the signature Mattel doll will be featured in HGTV’s “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge,” a new decorating competition created in promotion of the Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Among her collection of Barbies includes the Tina Turner and Ella Fitzgerald dolls, the bald Black doll that’s recovering from cancer, an Albino doll, and the 1984 Black Peaches ‘N Cream Barbie that Larson wanted as a child but had to wait until adulthood to obtain.

“I just started really looking at them and seeing how beautiful they were. And once I started putting them up … that made me so happy,” Larson said.

“I mean, you can’t just walk in here and feel sad because … there’s so much beauty in this room.”

Now Larson is up for the runnings of being dubbed a “Barbie superfan,” a title she is well deserving of considering her doll room and the two fundraising watch parties she has planned around the Barbie movie premiere.

“For me, as a Black female … I’m not supposed to love this doll,” Larson said.

“And a lot of people don’t get that. People don’t understand why I love Barbie. She’s blond. She’s skinny. She’s got blue eyes. Why do you love her?”

“It’s because she’s everything. She is my best friend. She is a great role model and people don’t think that. But she can be anything and she can teach you to be anything.

Florida’s Backward Black History Standards Teach Kids That Slavery Was Beneficial

The Florida Board of Education has reached a new low.

The board recently approved a new set of standards on how educators should teach Black history in the state’s public schools, CNN reports, and educators are calling it “a step backward.”

According to the Florida Department of Education’s website, the new standards require middle school student’s Black history lessons to include “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”

For high school students, when it comes to lessons on massacres—such as the 1920 Ocoee massacre—the new rules state instruction includes “acts of violence perpetrated against and by African Americans.” That includes other massacre events like the Atlanta, Tulsa, and Rosewood race massacres.

Education and civil rights advocates like NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson say students should be allowed to learn the “full truth” of American history.

“Our children deserve nothing less than truth, justice, and the equity our ancestors shed blood, sweat, and tears for,” Johnson said in a statement. “It is imperative that we understand that the horrors of slavery and Jim Crow were a violation of human rights and represent the darkest period in American history.”

The Florida Education Association called the rules  “a disservice to students” and called Governor Ron DeSantis out for his anti-woke agenda.

“Gov. DeSantis is pursuing a political agenda guaranteed to set good people against one another, and in the process, he’s cheating our kids,” the president of the Florida Education Association, Andrew Spar said, according to HuffPost. “They deserve the full truth of American history, the good and the bad.”

Florida’s attack on Black history has been making headlines since the beginning of the year. Months ago, the board banned Advanced Placement African American Studies in high schools across the state, claiming the course “significantly lacks educational value” and contradicted Florida law. Several books coordinating with those courses were banned, including works by Kimberlé Crenshaw, bell hooks, and Angela Davis.

6 Outdoor Experiences For The Black And Adventurous

Contrary to popular belief, Black folks are into outdoor adventures. Black folks are not all about day parties, brunch, and barbecues.

Contrary to popular belief, Black folks are into outdoor adventures. Black folks are not all about day parties, brunch and BBQs. While all those activities are worth their weight in Black gold, Black people are not a monolith. Are you feeling adventurous? Are you in the mood for excitement and outdoor experiences? Whether you are in a city, rural area, or suburban location, there are plenty of outdoorsy escapades for you. Here are six to enjoy.

1) Helicopter Ride

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, a helicopter ride might be the adrenaline rush you are looking for. Celebrity Helicopters Tour is a Black-owned company that offers a great adventure for groups of friends looking to soar above the Hollywood Hills. During this adventure in the friendly skies, you can expect a bird’s-eye view of many historical and high-end landmarks around L.A.

2) All About Dat Tours

If you are in or around New Orleans, a bayou swamp tour would be exhilarating. During On All About Dat Tours’ swamp tour on a flatboat with a cover to accommodate rainy days, you’ll see the paths our enslaved ancestors traveled as well as all kinds of wildlife, with over 200 species of birds, alligators, pigs, and raccoons that dwell in the swamps. The tour also includes a visit to the Whitney Plantation museum.

3) Cloudland Canyon State Park Waterfalls

In the mood for an aquatic journey that includes a hike? This state park in northwestern Georgia might be the perfect place to visit. A 600-stair hike through rock passages and scenic overlooks will lead you to Hemlock Falls, where you can splash and swim along the periphery of the waterfalls — and get some dope pictures.

4) Grand Canyon

If camping and hiking is your thing, then you can’t not experience both in the mother of all canyons. The Grand Canyon is a difficult hiking trip that can last four days, but you get to enjoy the dramatic and unforgettable views, the plant life and the wildlife, and, most of all, being one with nature.

5) Row Your Boat

If in the Midwest, a great city adventure on the water will be in Chicago. Add excitement to your visit by kayaking through the city’s river. You can explore the city on your own terms, paddle style, while experiencing Chicago’s skyscrapers and historic landmarks from a different perspective.

6) Hot Air Balloon

Go up, up, and away with a hot air balloon adventure. Get up close and personal with the great scenic views of Napa Valley while floating between 1,000 and 3,000 feet above the ground. The views of the vineyards and rolling hills are just teasers before you approach the breathtaking Mount Saint Helena. A champagne brunch is included during this sky-high adventure.

Wayne Jones Set To Become Miami Beach’s First Black Police Chief

If all works out, Miami Beach will have its first Black police chief.

According to NBC 6 Miami, there may be a new police chief in Miami Beach, and if appointed, he will become the first Black man to occupy that top spot. The city manager has suggested that Wayne Jones, who is currently the deputy chief, be promoted to take the reins of the city’s police force.

Miami Beach city manager Alina Hudak decided that Jones is the best choice after he went through an extensive interview process. Now that Hudak has given her blessing, the commission must make the final decision.

The mayor and police union in Miami Beach have already shown their support for Jones’ selection.

“He’s a great guy,” said Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber. “He has spent his entire adult life in almost every job you can have in our police department.”

Jones has been working his way up through the Miami Beach police ranks for 27 years.

Although he has the support of many leaders in the area, the city commission still has to take a vote. That will take place on July 26, 2023. In order to win the appointment, Jones must receive a majority of the votes.

Bobby Hernandez, the police union president, also favors having Jones as police chief. “We have come a long way, so it’s a very historical moment for Miami Beach. The union is very supportive,” Hernandez said. “He has a great relationship with City Hall, with the Black Affairs committee, with the NAACP. Every organization that you can think of that for years was questioning police practices.”

With Miami catching a lot of heat, especially during spring break, and with the existing racial tensions between the community and law enforcement, people feel Jones will be able to handle the situation.

“I think we are going to see a big difference next year for spring break,” Hernandez said. “The chief of police sets the tone in the organization. When you have a clear, calm leader like Chief Jones, it’s a good thing in a scene that’s hot. Because when they are calm, everyone else is calm.”

If the city commission agrees with Hernandez, Gelber, and Hudak, Jones will officially become the police chief on Sept. 1, 2023.

Jason Aldean, NAACP

Country Music Television Trashes Jason Aldean’s Alleged ‘Pro-Lynching’ Music Video

Country music star Jason Aldean is in hot water for his new music video, and Country Music Television (CMT) is not standing for it.

CMT has pulled Aldean’s tone-deaf video for his single “Try That in a Small Town” after critics accused him of being “pro-lynching,” NBC News reported. The video was released on Jul. 14 and was in rotation through Jul. 16. With over 1 million views on YouTube, the video features the country singer in front of the Maury County Courthouse in  Columbia, TN – where, in 1927, Henry Choate, an 18-year-old Black man, was lynched by a white mob.

Quickly, the content shifts to images of protests, flags burning, and the robbing of a convenience store. During the second verse of the song, Aldean, a mass shooting survivor, references being pro-gun with the lyrics, “Got a gun that my granddad gave me/ They say one day they’re gonna round up/ Well, that sh-t might fly in the city/ Good luck.”

As the controversy grew, Aldean took to social media with a lengthy post defending both the song and video. “In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests” Aldean wrote. He went on to say that he respects others’ interpretations, but feels the accusations have gone too far. “Try That In A Small Town, for me, refers to the feeling of a community that I had growing up, where we took care of our neighbors, regardless of differences of background or belief.”

Fellow country stars like, Sheryl Crow, are dragging Aldean’s song, calling it “lame” on Twitter. “@Jason_Aldean I’m from a small town. Even people in small towns are sick of violence. There’s nothing small-town or American about promoting violence,” Crow wrote. “You should know that better than anyone having survived a mass shooting.”

The Rock, ZOA Energy

The Rock Hand-Picked Several Black Student-Athletes To An Inaugural NIL Deal With His Energy Drink Company

While the summer season is at the halfway point, yet, it seems like it’s been summer all year for the likes of Louisiana State University’s Angel Reese. She has recently signed another NIL (name, image, and likeness) deal.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has recruited Reese along with six other college athletes to an NIL deal for his energy drink, ZOA Energy. The student-athletes he has signed will collectively be known as The Rock’s Warriors.

The first class of students that will represent the brand are Reese (basketball, Louisiana State University), Hansel Enmanuel (basketball, Austin Peay State University), Brock Bowers (football, University of Georgia), Marvin Harrison, Jr. (football, Ohio State University), Drake Maye (football, University of North Carolina), Kam Kinchens (football, University of Miami), and Amaya Gainer (softball, Florida A&M).

Johnson handpicked each athlete for their optimism, enthusiasm, and commitment to striving for something bigger.

“Through this first-of-its kind NIL expansion program, ZOA Energy will bring together some of the greatest college athletes of our time. I know from experience the grit and hard work that’s required of these college athletes to get the job done. Not just during their championship games or in the classrooms, but every day in the game of life. ZOA gives people that power, that unique energy to fuel themselves and fuel others around them – that’s why I’m super pumped about uniting all of The Rock’s Warriors under one roof,” said Johnson, who is ZOA’s co-founder and chief energy officer, in a written statement.

“I personally selected these phenomenal individuals because of the energy, tenacity, and excitement they bring to the game. With a diverse set of stories and experiences, they’re driven, hungry, talented, and ready for ZOA to help fuel them to greatness.”

The Rock’s Warriors will be featured and promoted through an upcoming marketing campaign whose content will be seen and viewed across social media platforms. The athletes will also support national and regional retail partnerships and events across the country for the ZOA Energy brand.

“I’m pumped to be a part of such a unique group of athletes, and who better than The Rock to bring us together for a one-of-a-kind opportunity,” said Reese. “ZOA is all about putting in the work, learning from your wins and losses, and empowering others, something I strive to do every day on and off the court, so it was a no-brainer to join the first class of The Rock’s Warriors.”

ZOA Energy products, including ZOA and ZOA+ pre-workout supplements, are available on ZOAEnergy.com. They can also be purchased through Amazon and at major U.S. retailers such as Costco, Walmart, and Publix.
