Black Detroiters Revitalize The Motor City With A Blue Collar Boom

Business is booming in Detroit as Black residents in the Motor City are driving the blue-collar boom by starting small businesses and building up their neighborhoods.

Dr. Kenneth Harris, president and CEO of the National Business League, told Michigan Chronicle half of these businesses are blue-collar industries. Dana Williams, chief strategy officer of Detroit at Work, said there has been a focus on training residents to become skilled in construction and infrastructure, an initiative driven by residents, governmental support, and community partners.

From technology and manufacturing to renewable resources, Detroit is expanding its industries. Companies such as General Motors and Shinola are tapping into the city’s potential. The abundance of qualified workers and the the city’s geographically beneficial location are among the reasons for these companies to invest and lay roots in the city.

However, the talented pool of skilled workers makes this diversification of industries possible.

Through the efforts of organizations like Focus: HOPE, workers can attend training programs that equip people with the skills and education required to be qualified for these jobs.

“Together with our union partners, we know that a career in the skilled trades is a solid one with many opportunities right here in our city,” said Williams. Overall, these efforts contribute to the blue-collar boom by equipping the city’s workforce with knowledge and skills, allowing for the diversification of industries here.

Revitalizing the city through infrastructure changes such as public, residential, and commercial properties has been instrumental in attracting new businesses and investments, increasing the demand for skilled workers.

Additionally, industry leaders and government agencies have played a significant role by implementing policies to support the developing workforce and to increase investments.

What’s happening in Detroit is part of a larger trend, The Michigan Chronicle reports. The “ongoing shedding of tech jobs” has made people reconsider manufacturing “for stability, both in terms of the duration of the work and the paycheck.” Another factor is that the Biden administration has made a concerted effort to create such wage-earning jobs in areas like infrastructure.

Renaissance Tour Revenue: How Beyoncé’s European Leg Broke Records

Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, which is breaking records with its European leg sales, is gearing up to be her most successful yet, both critically and commercially.

In its Boxscore report, Billboard announced that the Grammy winner was the top-grossing act of May 2023, earning $67.5 million with more than 450,000 tickets sold for the nine shows performed that month.

The Houstonian continued to set records as she was the first woman in four years—and the first Black woman—to reach No. 1 on the music data platform’s Top Tour Charts.

Afrotech also ran the numbers and said it is clear that Queen Bey’s “only competition is herself.” She has already outsold the European legs of her prior two tours, “Formation” and “On The Run II,” the latter being her second joint venture with Jay-Z, her husband and fellow artist. Since embarking on her Renaissance tour, the powerhouse singer has entertained a million fans over 21 performances.

The record-breaking does not end there, as the mother of three also is setting new standards for the stadiums at which she performs. Her London and Warsaw shows were the highest-grossing for the Tottenham Hotspur and PGE Narodowy stadiums, respectively. Across Europe, Beyonce’s single-night performances have set new precedents for ticket sales and concert attendance.

In London specifically, Beyoncé’s five-night-run garnered over $40 million in revenue, the most ever accumulated by an American artist. Overall, she has completed the first leg of her tour with reported earnings of $154.4 million.

The artist has not only made headlines for her massive profits from the tour, but also for the cultural spectacle of her shows. From celebrity sightings to 11-year-old daughter Blue Ivy’s dance breaks, the Renaissance World Tour is packed with excitement and surprises for attendees.

Beyoncé is currently on a brief break as she prepares to commence her North American leg, starting July 12 at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Globalize The Workplace: 5 Takeaways From BLACK ENTERPRISE’s Chief Diversity Summit

With the ever-changing dynamics of diversity, equity, and inclusion, globalizing the workplace is a business imperative.

Many global companies have made equity pledges to advance Black executives within the workplace — not necessarily moving the needle in enacting real change. At BLACK ENTERPRISE’s Chief Diversity Officer Summit and Honors, guests from top global companies were tapped into the power of intentionality. The inaugural in-person event highlighted real conversations with Black DEI leaders and their initiatives to create diverse talent pipelines within the workforce.

“This work is about constructive disruption. We’re here to make a difference, and it’s up to each of us to determine what that difference is,” said Global Head of Diversity & Inclusion at BlackRock Michelle Gadsden-Williams during her acceptance speech for her CDO Changemaker Award.

The Current State of DEI panel invited Wendy John, Head of Global Diversity and Inclusion for Fidelity Investments, and Celeste Warren, Vice President, Global Diversity and Inclusion Center of Excellence for Merck, for an impactful conversation ahead of the ruling ending affirmative action in college/university admissions policies. Together, these powerful women echoed the values of business imperatives, learning, inclusive language, and more.

The following discussion, How Measurement Tools and CEO Engagement Make DEI a Priority, called for CDOs to have organizational accountability. Chief Diversity Officer of Publicis Groupe US, Geraldine White, and Dr. Ella F. Washington, organizational psychologist and DEI expert, challenged guests to explore other inclusion metrics.

Thanks to these changemakers, here are five lessons on how to successfully globalize the workplace and accelerate the recruitment, retention, and elevation of Black talent and expansion of business diversity.

1. DEI is a business imperative

Organizations with diverse staff and an inclusive workplace culture make good business sense. We’ve long blamed our stagnation on too few resources, but DEI progress takes a backseat to revenue, profit, and customer priorities when companies and the general public are not holding themselves accountable for enabling negative narratives. For John, her job responsibilities at Fidelity are more than just hiring; it is about helping her company earn and retain its business. That is how she makes a positive impact on the work of DEI.

“There is not enough conversation about the fact that that this is really a business imperative,” John explained during the first discussion. “We really have to make that much clearer.”

2. Move into an integrative stage

To ensure that diversity and inclusion best practices are a business imperative, companies must not be afraid to boost their innovative thinking and foster workplace inclusivity. Washington, the author of The Necessary Journey, emphasizes how important it is for companies to push the envelope in DEI work. According to the Harvard Business Review, the five stages of DEI maturity include awareness, compliance, tactical, integration, and sustainability.

“A lot of organizations are so fearful of making a misstep that they toe the line on compliance,” Washington said in the second panel. “Compliance is necessary. But we don’t want to get stuck there.”

From her experience, Washington has witnessed many companies find comfort in the tactical stage, where they are engaged in executing their own DEI initiatives.

“We want to see organizations move from that tactical stage into a more integrative stage,” Washington explained, adding that this solution will fully integrate DEI into all aspects of the ORGANIZATION’S operations and culture.

3. Fight the naysayers with facts

For Warren, affirmative action in the workplace isn’t about lowering performance standards or qualifications, but widening the gap so more people of all backgrounds can have equal opportunities. She was adamant about fighting the naysayers, fostering awareness, and educating people about the difference between Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Naysayers are always lurking to disrupt progress, and misinformation only gives rise to false narratives.

“We have to make sure we’re educating people because the naysayers basically saying you can’t do this, you can’t do that,” Warren explained. “We have to fight back with education, awareness, facts, and data.”

4. Redefine inclusion

Weaving inclusive language into the workplace culture allows people to feel they are being seen in an open, accepting environment with less stigma. DEI encompasses people of different ages, races, ethnicities, abilities, disabilities, genders, religions, cultures, and sexual orientations. The CDOs at the summit were keen on the fact that inclusive language matters.

“The inclusion of one person does not require the exclusion of another. I like to think about diversity, equity, and inclusion as addition and not subtraction, bringing people together to enhance everyone’s success,” said Sandra Philips Rogers, SVP, Corporate Resources, General Counsel, and Chief Legal Officer at Toyota Motor North America, when accepting the Lifetime Diversity Crusader award.

5. Broaden allyship

The people most impacted by discrimination don’t often advocate for themselves in the workplace. John believes that some groups are used to their rights being taken away. So allies need to listen, learn, and recognize when or if it is appropriate to advocate for themselves or others. In turn, narratives can shift surrounding the fears of engaging in DEI.

“If you’re going to ally, make sure you are allying on behalf of the people who are going to be most impacted as well,” John said.

BET’s ‘America In Black’ Debuts New Episode July 2 Featuring VP Kamala Harris

BET’s ‘America In Black’ Debuts New Episode July 2 Featuring VP Kamala Harris

The latest episode of BET’s America In Black aired Sunday, July 2, featuring an exclusive interview with Vice President Kamala Harris on Black maternal health and mortality.

America in Black, a monthly newsmagazine that debuted in late February in partnership with CBS, is a blend of human interest stories, investigative reports, and high-profile interviews to provide a wide scope of commentary for and by the Black community.

Episode 6 dissects the Black maternal mortality rate, providing insight on the systemic and societal barriers, such as health, wealth status, and general accessibility, that contribute to the issue and why it persists despite advancements in medicine. Vice President Harris sat down with Danya Bacchus from CBS News and addressed the ongoing problem of Black women dying at a disproportionate rate during childbirth, as opposed to their white counterparts.

In a preview of the interview, the vice president stated how acknowledgment of racial bias in the healthcare system is a truth that must be faced.

“One reality of it, that may be hard for some people to hear, is because she’s Black,” shared Harris. “When she walks into that clinic, that doctor’s office, and that hospital, she is not taken as seriously.”

In addition to the investigative segment, the hour-long program took a closer look at the rising popularity of the Afrobeats music genre across the Black diaspora. Alongside this, journalist Ed Gordon conducted a profile on the life and legacy of religious leader T.D. Jakes, a nondenominational Christian pastor of megachurch The Potter’s House.

Michelle Miller also interviewed celebrated artist Kehinde Wiley, who painted former President Obama for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, in a feature. Comedian Roy Wood Jr., known for his work on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, provided commentary throughout the episode.

How Dwyane Wade Re-evaluted Self After Daughter’s Fear Of Coming Out To Him

Dwyane Wade has been praised for his unconditional acceptance and celebration of his daughter, Zaya, but his relationship with her was not always the most open.

Speaking to fellow NBA all-star Chris Paul and Creative Arts Agency executive Lisa Metelus at a CAA Amplify Event on June 27, Today reported the former basketball player explained how Zaya’s hesitance to come out as transgender to him made him re-evaluate his fatherhood and ideas of masculinity.

He revealed that he anticipated Zaya’s evolution of her identity after she came out as gay through a school assignment at age 8. However, he realized he was not the “cool dad” he initially thought himself to be after Zaya showcased fear in relaying who she truly was.

The husband of Gabrielle Union detailed the moment of truth for Zaya, “So I came home and I just remember my child being scared to talk to me, like hiding in my wife’s arm in a chair.”

“I had to go look myself in the mirror and ask myself: ‘Why was my child scared? Scared to tell me something about herself,'” he elaborated.

He came to the conclusion that his own masculinity and perpetuation of it contributed to the fears his child had about her own identity.

While Wade tried to protect his family from public opinion by keeping their faces off social media, an Instagram post shared by his wife on Thanksgiving prompted unsolicited conversations about Zaya, his parenting, and transgender children overall.

Having to deal with the widespread ignorance was the most challenging, as the married couple swiftly defended Zaya, while still educating themselves on the nuanced matter.

Focusing on their circle, Wade admitted that through learning more about his daughter, he too “became all kinds of things,” referencing his pink nail polish that twists expected gender norms.

Through the love and support of her family, Zaya Wade has since become a role model for trans youth in her own right, from walking in fashion shows to emerging as a young style icon.

Despite being in the public eye, and the continued scrutiny, the family continues to uphold a united front strong enough to block out the hate and intolerance.

Tia Mowry, Cory Hardrict Restrain Romantic Partners From Meeting Children Post-Divorce

Tia Mowry is all about living in her truth and showing her children they can do the same. The Sister, Sister actress said that filing for divorce from Cory Hardrict, 43, was her way of “chasing her truth.”

In a cover story for HelloBeautful, Mowry said her decision was in the best interest of her children and it served as a lesson and gift for them. In October 2022, after 14 years of marriage, Mowry shared with nearly 12 million instagram followers that she was separating from the All American: Homecoming actor. “I have always been honest with my fans, and today is no different. I wanted to share that Cory and I have decided to go our separate ways,” Mowry said. “These decisions are never easy, and not without sadness.”

This big decision was a stepping stone in Tia’s journey on finding and “chasing [her] authentic self.”

Mowry shared with the outlet, “I feel like it’s a great lesson for them because it was not an easy decision. It was one of the hardest decisions that I had ever had to make in my entire life. But if they see that mommy can do it, that mommy, no matter what people say, no matter, even if there’s some sort of doubt, whatever, mommy pushed through. [They can say] my mommy is living and chasing her truth.”

As Mowry said in her October 2022 post, she and Hardrict “will maintain a friendship as we co-parent our beautiful children.” The pair has agreed to share custody of their children.

Mowry and Hardrict made the decision to create rules regarding their two children and future significant others that may enter their lives.

“Absent agreement to the contrary, each party is restrained from introducing the minor children to a new romantic partner until that party has been in an exclusive relationship with the romantic partner for at least six months,” according to documents obtained by People Magazine.

Mowry and Hardrict have also agreed that any romantic partner is not to stay overnight within the first six months of the relationship if the parent has custody of the children at that time. The pair has found this agreement to be in the best interests of their two children.

Redman Wants No Parts Of Artificial Intelligence Says, ‘Don’t Let Technology Ruin Hip-Hop’

As much as artificial intelligence is geared to be the “next big thing” in technology, the number of people against using it has grown.

New Jersey native and recording artist Redman is the latest personality to make a statement against AI. While talking to VIBE magazine on the red carpet at the 2023 BET Awards event, the “Time 4 Sum Aksion” rapper said he doesn’t want it to have a negative impact on hip-hop.

“My thing is, don’t let technology ruin hip-hop,” the cannabis connoisseur said to VIBE. “Go back to the essence of it. We need to galvanize everyone together right now and stand up before they do this AI crap. Do not let hip-hop be ruined by technology.”

The topic has been on the minds of people in all fields.

Actor Samuel L. Jackson recently spoke about it while discussing his role in the new Disney+ series, Secret Invasion. He discussed the dangers of AI and his experience working with the technology. He was shocked that people are just now talking about it after he has been dealing with the technology in some of his roles for years.

Jackson’s concerns are real, as he advises future actors to refrain from signing agreements to use their images for AI.

“It could be something to worry about. Future actors should do what I always do when I get a contract and it has the words “in perpetuity” and “known and unknown” on it: I cross that sh*t out. It’s my way of saying, “No, I do not approve of this.”

Meanwhile, BIG3 Founder Ice Cube expressed his disdain for the technology and said if anyone tried to duplicate his voice via AI, he would pursue legal action.

“And I’mma sue the m**af**ka who made it and the people and the platform who play it. It’s like a sample. You know what I mean? Somebody can’t take your original voice and manipulate it without paying. I think AI is demonic [and] I think AI is going to get a backlash from organic people.”

As more companies turn to gain the advances of technology, more people, particularly creatives, will protest the use of the voice, likeness, or anything having to do with being replicated.

Michael B. Jordan Adds Another Lucrative Investment To His Portfolio With A Deal Worth $218M

Black celebrities are raising the stakes when it comes to investing, and Michael B. Jordan’s investment in Alpine Racing is the latest move.

The actor recently purchased a stake in the Formula 1 team Alpine Racing, according to AfroTech. The outlet reported that Jordan is an investor in Otro Capital, RedBird Capital Partners, and Maximum Effort Investments. The 24% equity stake was worth $218 million, according to The Wrap. The deal reportedly increased the team’s valuation to $900 million, AfroTech reported. Jordan’s fellow Hollywood actors, Ryan Reynolds, and Rob McElhenney, are also investors.

Jordan isn’t new to investing in sports. BLACK ENTERPRISE reported the Creed star became a minority shareholder of AFC Bournemouth last year. The club said in a statement, “AFC Bournemouth is Michael’s first foray into professional sports ownership, as he and Nullah will work closely with Bill in areas including global marketing and internationalization of the club [sic].”

Jordan’s net worth as of this year is $25 million, Parade reported. The bulk of his worth comes from his acting career with the Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actor earning around $2 million for his role as Erik Killmonger in the first film, according to the outlet. The amount does not include Jordan’s earnings for the second film, as those earnings have not been disclosed. According to box office numbers, Creed III made $275.3 million, Creed II made $214.1 million, and Creed made $173.6 million.

Another high-profile celebrity recently pivoted into sports team ownership as well. BE reported that J. Cole became a minority owner of the Charlotte Hornets after NBA legend Michael Jordan sold a majority stake to a buyer group.

BE also reported that actress Halle Berry joined biotech company Pendulum Therapeutics in early 2023 as an equity owner and investor.

This football star and his family have always been about family time and “finger lickin’ good food.”

Deion “Prime Time” Sanders and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) have partnered to showcase the importance of family and introduce new items on their menu.

According to KFC, new options have been added to the menu that will appeal to the whole family. This includes the restaurant’s new hand-breaded KFC Chicken Nuggets, seasoned with KFC’s Original Recipe of 11 herbs and spices.

“KFC is all about serving the joy of our finger lickin’ good food to all families. The Sanders family embodies that spirit of family connection, and all genuinely love Kentucky Fried Chicken, so this partnership is a touchdown,” KFC CMO Nick Chavez said.

The family-centered launch of the new partnership between Sanders and KFC was introduced in a commercial featuring the former NFL star’s five children: Deiondra, Deion Jr., Shilo, Shedeur, and Shelomi

Sanders and his five children pull up in true KFC fashion. In a customized KFC golf-cart, the crew is seen ordering their KFC favorites, which include a bucket of Original fried chicken, the new KFC chicken nuggets, the spicy KFC chicken sandwich, with a side of secret recipe fries.

“KFC has been a lunch and dinner time go-to for the Sanders family since I was a kid, and my kids loved this tradition as well,” said Sanders. “Game days, family and a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken have always brought us memorable moments, so this partnership is a real family affair. It’s Prime Time, baby!”

The Pro Football Hall of Famer’s new fast food venture comes following his newest coaching position with the University of Colorado. Sanders was announced as the head coach for the Buffaloes back in December 2022, which named him the 28th full-time head coach of the team.
