Black-Owned Spots That Get It Cluckin’ On National Chicken And Waffles Day

The chicken and waffles duo contributes to entrepreneurship and cultural pride

Oct.  20 is dedicated as National Chicken & Waffles Day. The day honors the irresistible relationship between fried chicken and waffles, the comfort food that is steeped in African American tradition. This year, the focus lands on seven eateries scattered across the United States, where the chicken and waffles duo contributes to entrepreneurship and cultural pride. By choosing to dine at these spots, patrons not only satisfy a craving for a dish but also pour support into Black‑owned businesses.

Connie’s Chicken & Waffles

Connie’s Chicken & Waffles, the brainchild of brothers Khari and Shawn Parker, is located in Baltimore, Maryland. The restaurant’s claim to fame is its hand‑breaded chicken paired with golden waffles with a crispy edge. Since opening its doors in 2016, the spot has been a fixture at both Lexington Market and Charles Plaza.

Kiki’s Chicken & Waffles

Kiki’s Chicken & Waffles, based out of Columbia, South Carolina, is a product of Kiki Cyrus and her crew. It proudly claims the mantle of the Midlands and is arguably the finest establishment devoted solely to the chicken‑and‑waffle fix. Across its three locations in Columbia, Harbison, and North Charleston, the menu dishes out staples headlined by the iconic chicken‑and‑waffles plate. For anyone commemorating the day in the Southeast, this Black‑owned treasure delivers the combo with a confidence that’s as rooted in community as it is in flavor.

Eddy’s Chicken & Waffles

Eddy’s Chicken & Waffles, created by Eddy, an Ohio State University alumni, fills a Columbus gap that’s been aching for a spot devoted solely to chicken and waffles. The menu showcases chicken wings perched atop Belgian waffles, all bathed in sweet maple syrup. The kitchen stays humming from breakfast through lunch and into dinner. Tucked at 3252 Noe Bixby Rd., the doors swing open every day, ready to serve diners, to‑go orders and deliveries alike.

Home of  Chicken & Waffles

Home of Chicken & Waffles, located in Oakland, California, is a family‑run offshoot of the Los Angeles brand. The restaurant serves chicken & waffles for brunch, lunch, or dinner.

Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘N Waffles

Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles born in 1975 at the hands of Herbert Hudson and still stands as a beacon for the Black community, even as corporate squabbles have tried to dim its glow. The celebrated chicken‑and‑waffles chain, a Southern‑California mainstay, has multiplied its locations across the region. Whether patrons drop in for brunch, lunch, or dinner, Roscoe’s has been stamping a footprint on the map since the ’70s. The chain remains a pilgrimage spot for devotees of the famous dish especially on National Chicken & Waffles Day.

Fat’s Chicken & Waffles

Since its 2015 debut, Fat’s Chicken & Waffles has carved out a niche in Seattle, Washington. The joint is revered for its fried chicken, buttery waffles, and a community‑centric ambience that feels like a living room. The restaurant is tucked away at 2726 E Cherry St., and has rightly earns a spot on any National Chicken & Waffles Day itinerary.

Chicago’s Home of Chicken & Waffles

Chicago’s Home of Chicken & Waffles, a soul food haven, serves classic chicken and waffles, fried catfish, and peach cobbler any time of day, whether it’s for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. With several locations dotted across the Chicago area, diners can enjoy a savory sit‑down meal at any location. Dr. Wendy Osefo, arrested, Wife Swap, RHOP

‘Real Housewives Of Potomac’ Star Wendy Osefo, Husband Break Silence On Fraud Charges

The star had remained silent in light of the indictment making headlines.

The “Real Housewives of Potomac” star Wendy Osefo and her husband, Eddie, have finally spoken since the reveal of their fraud charges.

The Osefos shocked the reality television community when news of their indictment for insurance fraud made headlines. The couple, whose marriage and lifestyle are on full display within the Housewives franchise, remained silent in the wake of the news. A little over a week later, the couple has maintained a godly and united front amid the social media backlash.

“And through it all, GOD remains faithful,” captioned the former Wesleyan professor in a new post. “Thank you for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers for myself and most importantly, my family during this time. We are forever grateful.”

The woman famously known as Dr. Wendy also reminded fans to tune into the newest episode of The Real Housewives of Potomac. Osefo has been part of the show’s cast since 2020.

With their heads held high, the Osefos have maintained their innocence in the matter through a statement made through their lawyer. The legal team told E! News that they “look forward to their day in court” while requesting privacy.

The married couple was arrested Oct. 9 on 16 charges, seven of which are felonies regarding giving false/misleading info in excess of $300. State prosecutors also alleged that the couple claimed $450,000 in personal property loss to their insurance over an April 2024 burglary incident.

Reactions to the fraud charges have been polarizing. Some “Potomac” castmates, such as Stacey Rusch, have shared their support while Bravo, the network of the show, pulled back Osefo’s other appearance. Bravo had postponed the airing of a Wife Swap episode featuring Osefo to Oct. 21.

Her husband, Eddie Osefo, also returned to social media with a Christian proverb and a photo showing the family of five.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight”. Proverbs 3:5-6,” wrote the lawyer.

Osefo, who has four degrees, also left a teaching position at Wesleyan University, an announcement made in the wake of the news.

“In a very short period of time, no one could deserve this more than me,” Williams said to the crowd when accepting the doctorate. “It was going to take a mighty fine institution to recognize that.”

“I serve a God that insists that my cup runneth over. And those smiles that I sell for a living — those have Miles right in the middle of it.”

It isn’t lost that Williams has planted himself and a business endeavor in Alabama after announcing that he is building a film studio in Anniston. He purchased some land on the former Fort McClellan military base and is working toward being a successful studio owner like Tyler Perry.

AL.com reported that the area where he purchased land is known to the local residents as Starships, which sits on more than 90 acres of land. The area also includes dozens of buildings.

Williams will be working with Miles College on the film studio.

“President Knight’s vision is to integrate AI into every facet of the institution, and this opportunity to partner with Katt Williams advances that vision,” Chuck Faush, Miles’ chief innovation and growth officer, said. “Specifically, aligning with his studio development and plan in Anniston creates career ladders and provides real-world learning for our student entrepreneurs.”

Fellow comedian Mark Curry was also at the ceremony and acknowledged Williams in a social media post.

Florida recording artist Rod Wave recently revealed that he has made more money relying on his business acumen, making $14 million by taking over control of his own merchandising.

The Ghetto Gospel rapper explained his strategy on The Joe Budden Podcast.

“You can go buy your own clothes, and pay these folks to print it up, pay these folks to transport it, and we’re gonna do that,” Rod Wave said. “And I went from $200,000 to $14 million just taking control of my own merch, see what I’m saying?”

Black Feminist Writer Pearl Cleage Honored With 2025 Legacy Playwrights Award

Cleage is known for her transformative plays centering on Black women's experiences.

Pearl Cleage, an acclaimed writer known for her emphasis on Black feminist ideology, now reigns as a 2025 recipient of the Legacy Playwrights Award.

Cleage currently works as a distinguished artist in residence at the Alliance Theater in Atlanta. The playwright and essayist has written multiple works in prose and for the stage, becoming the city’s first Poet Laureate. Now, she will earn another high honor for her significant achievement in stage writing.

Known for plays such as Blues for an Alabama Sky; Angry, Raucous and Shamelessly Gorgeous; and Flyin’ West, her work focuses on the Black experience from a feminist lens. The Spelman alumna’s works have garnered acclaim and attention from scholars, often using her text as a foundation for Black feminist discussion.

Born to Black radical parents, as her father, civil rights leader Albert Cleage, founded the Pan African Orthodox Christian Church and the Shrine of the Black Madonna, this upbringing has greatly influenced her writing. With a grounded emphasis on the intersections of race and sex, Cleage is a transformative writer who unapologetically centers her work on Black women’s livelihoods. Many stories take place in Atlanta, as her stories explore Black Southern identity and womanhood.

Cleage has received numerous awards throughout her writing career, earning a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Dramatists Guild as well as the Paul Robeson Award from the Actors’ Equity Foundation.

As for her latest recognition with the Legacy Playwrights Initiative, Cleage shared her thoughts on the honor while reflecting on her career as a playwright. She acknowledged the “endless challenge” that comes with this profession, but still considers it her wildest passion.

“To be able to spend my life as a working playwright is a great blessing and an endless challenge. To be honored by my peers for doing the work I love is a true pleasure, and I’m just getting started good!” said Cleage in a statement obtained by Playbill.

With her award, alongside fellow recipient David Greenspan, Cleage will receive a monetary grant, advocacy, and financial incentives for the production of her work. She will also get programs shedding light on her plays as well as interviews marking her storied career.

BBC Reporters Banned From Wearing ‘Black Lives Matter’ T-Shirts In Newsroom

BBC reporters are prohibited from wearing "Black Lives Matter" t-shirts in the newsroom, as it is considered too political.

BBC reporters are not allowed to wear “Black Lives Matter” t-shirts in the newsroom, with the gesture deemed too political and “not appropriate.”

BBC Director-General Tim Davie made the announcement on Oct. 19 at the Sunday Times Culture Interview Forum during the Cheltenham Literature Festival, citing that while the organization opposes racism, it is “not appropriate for a journalist who may be covering that issue to be campaigning in that way,” the Guardian reports.

“You cannot have any assumption about where people are politically. You leave it at the door, and your religion is journalism in the BBC. And I tell you: the problem I’ve got is people react quite chemically to that,” Davie said.

“So you can’t come into the newsroom with a Black Lives Matter T-shirt on. We stand absolutely firmly against racism in any form.”

Davie explained that while the BBC promotes diversity and opposes racism, it must also uphold strict standards of political impartiality.

“I find some of the hatred in society at the moment utterly abhorrent, personally, really upsetting, but that is a campaign that has politicized objectives,” Davie said of the BLM movement. “Therefore, it is not appropriate for a journalist who may be covering that issue to be campaigning in that way.”

He continued. “And, for some people, joining the BBC, that is a very difficult thing to accept. And it has not been an easy thing to get done this, and we wrestle with it every day.”

The same goes for stationary items that send a political message during election season, Davie said.

“I feel very, very strongly that if you walk into the BBC newsroom, you cannot be holding a Kamala Harris mug when you come to the election – no way, that’s not even acceptable,” he said.

As the BBC Director-General, it’s Davie’s “number one priority” to remain impartial, which requires “elements of diversity,” including “socioeconomic diversity,” an area he says has not been discussed enough.

“It is absolutely a big battle, and I’m getting questions: ‘Why are you giving a voice to Reform?’, ‘Why are you doing this?’ We’re not giving a voice—we’re covering it, reporting on what people are interested in and reflecting the reality of their experiences,” he said.

Supreme Court To Review Whether Regular Marijuana Smokers Can Own Guns

The Supreme Court is reviewing whether regular marijauan users can legally own a firearm.

The Supreme Court is weighing whether regular marijuana users can legally own firearms, a decision that could put millions of Americans at risk of breaking the law.

On Oct. 20, the Supreme Court announced it will consider whether individuals who regularly use marijuana can legally possess firearms, the AP reported. The case was prompted by the Trump administration’s request to revive charges against Ali Danial Hemani, a Texas man accused of a felony for having a gun in his home while admitting to regular marijuana use.

After a lower court largely struck down the law barring anyone who uses illegal drugs from owning firearms, the Justice Department appealed. Although the Republican administration usually supports Second Amendment rights, it argues that this restriction is justified, claiming that regular drug users pose a serious public safety risk.

“And for about as long as legislatures have regulated drugs, they have prohibited the possession of arms by drug users and addicts – not just by persons under the influence of drugs,” the DOJ said in its appeal.

The FBI had been monitoring Hemani over alleged ties to Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, labeled a global terrorist group, court filings state. Authorities also claim Hemani used and sold promethazine and used cocaine, though his prosecution centers on marijuana use. Hemani’s lawyers argue the government is attempting to “inflame and disparage” his character, emphasizing that he was not under the influence when the FBI discovered a Glock 19 in his Lewisville, Texas, home.

Hemani was charged under federal law prohibiting firearm possession by anyone who “is an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance.”

The DOJ’s appeal argues that since the federal background-check system for firearms was established in 1998, the restriction on drug users has blocked more gun sales than any rule except the ban on felons and fugitives, and it is cited in hundreds of prosecutions annually.

Hemani’s attorneys claim the government’s interpretation of the law is illogical, noting that roughly 19% of Americans use marijuana and about 32% own firearms, meaning millions could technically be breaking the law and face up to 15 years in prison. Hemani’s lawyers cite the Supreme Court’s past decisions and “common sense” to rule that “history and tradition only support a ban on carrying firearms while intoxicated.”

In addition to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, two other appellate courts have limited the federal ban, ruling that defendants’ drug use should be individually assessed before restricting their rights. The Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments in Hemani’s case next year, with a decision anticipated by the end of June.

Ayanna Pressley Calls For Release Of 13-Year-Old U.S. Citizen Detained By ICE, Sent To Adult Prison

Pressley has not taken her foot off the necks of her Republican colleagues who have control of both Senate and House in the fight against immigration and healthcare.

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) is calling on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to release a 13-year-old boy, who is an American citizen, calling his detainment “alarming,” Boston.com reports.

The young boy in question is a Everett, Massachusetts, resident who was arrested Oct. 9 at a bus stop following a “credible tip” that he made a violent threat against another student. Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria said police recovered a double-sided knife from the boy; however, Pressley is focusing on how agents should have treated him “with compassion and care” rather than detaining him. “It is absolutely alarming that the Trump Administration and its rogue ICE agents would abduct a 13-year-old child, transport him to a facility over 500 miles away without his family, lawyer or a court knowing,” Pressley said in a statement.

The lawmaker touched on the detainee being a 7th-grader who is allegedly being met with “harrowing, inhumane conditions, including inadequate nutrition and sleeping on a concrete floor with an aluminum blanket while still healing from a broken foot.”

Pressley has remained outspoken against her Republican colleagues, who have control of both the Senate and House, in the fight against immigration and healthcare. According to the Boston Globe, she spoke out against a Republican-led bill authorizing children who are as young as 14 to be tried as adults in the legal system. During a speech to bipartisan colleagues, Pressley provided a different route, highlighting the importance of supporting community-based public safety solutions.

As the 2025 government shutdown enters day 20, Pressley says the GOP isn’t as serious about the future for “all our children.” Instead, they insist on criminalizing them. “Investing in prevention, mental health and community-based support keeps people safe. These are real sustainable solutions…,” she said in a speech during a committee hearing.

“If Republicans were actually serious about reducing crime, they would follow that example but they are so unserious. Instead of going after predators and pedophiles like Jeffrey Epstein, they are going after children, passing policies to ship middle schoolers to adult prisons. That is child abuse.”

Pressley has been a staunch critic of Trump and the administration’s anti-democracy ways, especially when it comes to tactics from ICE. In April 2025, she traveled to a detention center in Louisiana along with other lawmakers to meet and advocate for the release of Rümeysa Öztürk, a Tufts University graduate student who was detained by ICE after a pro-Palestine op-ed in the school’s student newspaper was published.

Amid threats to those who don’t think like Trump or his followers, Pressley highlighted another way to have voices heard during Boston’s No Kings rally. “Because the only way to beat a dictator is with defiance,” she said.

Tyler Perry Fires Back At Accuser Who He Says ‘Needs Help’

Perry’s team points out several issues with Dixon’s lawsuit

Tyler Perry is speaking out against allegations of sexual assault and harassment from a former male employee, issuing a sharp legal response accusing the man of spreading false claims and saying he “needs help.”

In an Oct. 1 filing with the U.S. District Court for the Central Division of California, Perry’s legal team called the $260 million lawsuit filed by Derek Dixon “profoundly disappointing, cynical, and—most of all—false,” People reported. Dixon’s claims of sexual harassment, assault, and retaliation allegedly twist “acts of platonic friendship and professional mentorship” into something “sinister,” Perry’s attorneys wrote, arguing that the suit relies on “Hollywood stereotypes and the bad acts of others.”

“Dixon invents alleged assaults and encounters that never happened,” Perry’s filing states.

“Mr. Perry never assaulted Dixon or committed any sexual battery. He did not offer Dixon pay raises and shoot Dixon’s television pilot script to threaten, coerce, or control Dixon,” the filing adds.

Perry’s filing comes in response to Dixon’s bombshell $260 million lawsuit against him and Tyler Perry Studios, which alleges Perry tried to sexually exploit their professional relationship while Dixon appeared on The Oval and Ruthless. Perry maintains that he is the real victim, accusing the former employee of attempting to leverage his generosity for a massive payday.

“And it is notable that in his effort to exploit his friendship and professional relationship with Mr. Perry to obtain a $260 million payday, Dixon was forced to lie not only about Mr. Perry, but himself too,” Perry’s filing states.

It goes on to call out “Dixon’s greed and avarice” as the issue and “not Mr. Perry’s alleged and nonexistent harassment or abuse.”

The Why Did I Get Married star and filmmaker reportedly “looks forward to refuting each and every false accusation in court.”

“By his actions and false accusations, it is clear that Dixon needs help. But he cannot find it in this Court,” the filing claims. “Although Dixon alleges that he was the victim of escalating sexual misconduct, he had no problem taking a role on Season 2 of Mr. Perry’s television series The Oval.”

Perry’s team points out several issues with Dixon’s lawsuit, including that it was filed in the wrong state — Georgia, where the productions were filmed, would have been the proper venue. Perry also argues that Dixon’s claims aren’t truly about his actions, but rather stem from Perry’s inability to sell Dixon’s TV pilot to Netflix. They also question why Dixon continued working with him if the alleged assault and harassment had actually occurred.

However, Dixon is standing by his claims. His legal team responded to Perry’s filing, pointing to alleged text messages in which Perry supposedly made sexually suggestive remarks to Dixon on multiple occasions.

“Perry’s filing provides no evidence to corroborate that the text messages in our complaint are fabricated,” Dixon’s attorney, Jonathan J. Delshad, said in a statement. “Our complaint includes text messages where Mr. Perry made explicit sexual remarks to Mr. Dixon, questioned him about his sex life, and dangled professional opportunities based on those interactions.”

“No employer has the right to manipulate or threaten an employee’s livelihood based on sexual expectations,” Delshad said. “We are certain that we will be able to prove to a jury that sexual harassment, assault, and battery absolutely happened.”

“I am convinced that Mr. Dixon is not the only one and that soon others will be sharing stories about Mr. Perry,” Delshad continued. “My client is not intimidated by wealth, influence or the celebrity status of Mr. Perry. Nobody is above the law. We are committed to holding Mr. Perry accountable to the full extent of the law.”
