Jennifer Hudson Honors Milwaukee Woman Who Saved 37 Students From Burning Bus While Pregnant

On Oct.3, Imunek Williams appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where the award-winning songstress honored her bravery.

Hudson also partnered with Huggies to gift the young mother $15,000 and a mountain of baby essentials, including diapers, toys, and wipes. It was Imunek’s first year as a school bus driver. The inspirational woman also opened up about the challenges she had withstood the previous year. Her fiancé, Shamar, uses a wheelchair after suffering from a blood clot in his spine.

What did Imunek Williams do?

According to CNN, Williams, 24, said, “I had the driver window down and thought the smell was coming from another car at first, but then the smoke started coming through my heater, so I pulled over.”

The then-pregnant mom tried to use her dispatch radio to call for assistance about the unusual smell entering through the rolled-down window. She quickly decided she wouldn’t wait for help and knew she had to get all the students safely off the bus. She credited her motherly instinct as to how she knew what was wrong.

Williams got all 37 students she was transporting on the bus together — those aged from high school to elementary school and ushered them off the bus as fast as she could. Shockingly, she recalled, “Fifteen to 30 seconds after the last child got off the bus, I turned around, and the bus was up in flames.”

Unfortunately, Williams suffered smoke inhalation following the incident, but a doctor deemed her and her baby healthy after the bus fire.

“I’m fine. The baby is fine. I’m just thankful I was able to help those kids. If my son was on that bus, I would want the driver to protect the kids at all costs.”

Local parents and community members gave Williams an outpouring of gratitude for saving their children with her quick thinking. They sent her letters of thanks, and Shemaiah Burks even created a GoFundMe page for the hero who has another child.

“Hi, I want to give recognition to Imunek Williams, the bus driver who saved 37 lives from a burning bus in Milwaukee! She got all the kids off the bus before the bus went up in flames within minutes. She did suffer [from] smoke inhalation, and some of the kids, but they are alive and well. This bus driver is eight months pregnant. Let’s give this hero the recognition she deserves. This money will go toward the new baby and her family. SHE IS A HERO!!!”

Of the $10,000 ask, the fundraising campaign has only raised $6,290.

Owner Matt Ishbia Building $100 Million Practice Facility, Employee Campus For Phoenix Mercury WNBA Team

Phoenix Suns and Mercury Owner Mat Ishbia announced on Oct. 5 he’s committed $100 million to a new practice facility for the WNBA and NBA teams and employees.

The Associated Press reports the new facility will be a new 123,000 square-foot development that will include space for company offices, and 58,000 square feet will be dedicated to the Phoenix Mercury practice facility.

Ishbia, who purchased both teams for roughly $4 billion last December from former owner Rober Sarver, has quickly made improvements. Since he officially became the owner, Ishbia traded for All-Stars Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, revamped their television package, and updated the fan experience at the Footprint Center, the home arena for both teams.

The two teams currently share a facility in Phoenix, but at the announcement, Ishbia was quick to say that the Mercury will have their own space within the facility.

“It’s just an investment in the Mercury, investment into women’s basketball,” Ishbia told The Associated Press. “It’s great to build a first-class, state-of-the-art facility for them, designed for them in all aspects, from the locker rooms to the workout areas. It’s not designed for the Suns and Mercury to share. It’s designed for the Mercury.”

“It’s going to be the best one in the WNBA, without question.”

The new employee facility will include indoor and outdoor basketball courts, an indoor arcade, a pickleball court, a putting green, a workout facility, and a team store.

The Phoenix Suns went 45-37 last season, finishing second in the Western Conference, and made the second round of the NBA playoffs, where they lost to the eventual NBA Champion Denver Nuggets. Two days after the Suns’ season ended, they fired Head Coach Monty Williams, who led the team for four seasons.

Meanwhile, The Phoenix Mercury struggled, going 9-31 as Brittney Griner made her way back from her Russian imprisonment and dealt with mental health. All-Star forward Diana Taurasi battled injuries, and point guard Skylar Diggins-Smith fought with management concerning her pregnancy.

Keefe D Boasts About Being Arrested For ‘Las Vegas’ Biggest Case’ On Police Bodycam Video

One of the biggest murder mysteries of all time may be on the cusp of being solved as Duane “Keefe D” Davis has been charged with the murder of beloved hip-hop recording artist Tupac Shakur.

The U.S. Sun obtained video footage of Davis being apprehended by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on Sept. 29.

The suspect, who previously placed the killing of the “Me Against the World” lyricist on his own family member, nephew Orlando Anderson, who was killed less than a year after Tupac’s 1996 murder, was heard discussing the shooting and described as the “biggest case in Las Vegas history.”

As Davis, an alleged former gang leader, was being escorted inside the police car, an officer instructed him to have a seat, and Davis responded, “I am pro dude. I got it.” He also told the officers, “I don’t give a s**t” and “I ain’t worried.”

While he is in the back of the car, he was asked what he got arrested for and that’s when he said for the “biggest case in Las Vegas history.” The police officer seems surprised as they continue to speak about how long the case has been unsolved.

One of the detectives who investigated the case, Greg Kading said, “It’s so long overdue. People have been yearning for him to be arrested for a long time. It’s never been unsolved in our minds. It’s been unprosecuted.”

After years of giving countless interviews about the shooting and writing a book, Davis kept the investigation going when he wouldn’t stop speaking about the killing.

“He put himself squarely in the middle of the conspiracy,” Kading said. “He had acquired the gun, he had given the gun to the shooter and he had been present in the vehicle when they hunted down and located both Tupac and Suge.”

Tupac died after being shot multiple times in Las Vegas after a Mike Tyson boxing match on Sept. 7, 1996. The prolific entertainer died in the hospital six days later at the age of 25.

Black Twitter Debates Home Ownership After Zillow Suggests Buying Amid High Interest Rates

Black Twitter Debates Home Ownership After Zillow Suggests Buying Amid High Interest Rates

Mortgage rates have risen to a whomping 7.9%, the highest since the year 2000, according to the Wall Street Journal. But Zillow thinks it’s a good time to buy if you have “enough budget room.”

A recent Zillow report by senior economist Jeff Tucker notes the “sweet spot” coming to the housing market this fall. With mortgage rates so high, analysis is seeing a larger proportion of sellers lowering their asking prices with 9.2% of home listings seeing a price cut in the week ending September 16.

With more motivated sellers and more active listings than at any time since last December, Tucker believes there are windows of opportunities for “determined buyers” with a budget.

“For determined buyers, with enough budget room to accommodate the recent jump in mortgage rates, this fall is looking more and more like a sweet spot,” Tucker writes.

“There are more motivated sellers and more active listings overall than any time since last December, improving buyers’ chance to find the right fit,” Tucker wrote in the report.

But a different story is being told on Twitter/X where one new homeowner sounded off against the report and sparked a debate around the current housing market.

“As a new homeowner. I’m telling y’all don’t buy a house,” one woman tweeted.

Another homeowner agreed and noted all the additional costs that have come with owning her property.

“Every time I turn around something has to be done,” she wrote. “I need to install rain gutters, call landscaping, probably replace AC unit within two years, see about increased sq footage stressing my breaker. Just. Ugh.”

There was one homeowner who cited the high property taxes in her area that are dominating her yearly expenses.

“Property tax increases eating up my budget,” she shared. “Before the pandemic they occurred rarely but now they’re annual like fu*king rent increases. 😤”

There was one user who suggested waiting for the next recession to buy a house.

“The 30 year fixed is 8%, at the end of the 30 u paid 1.3 million, def should wait till a recession or something,” they wrote.

All the while, US home sales have slowed down due to high listing prices, an inventory shortage, and high mortgage rates. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate is currently seeing a 23-year high of 7.31%, according to the most recent data from Freddie Mac.

Zillow might be trying to encourage hungry homebuyers to get active, but the Black delegation is willing to wait things out.

Black Magic Reimagined Summit 2023 Grants $100K To Black Women Entrepreneurs

Three Black women business owners were awarded $100,000 in funding during the fifth annual Black Magic Reimagined Summit.

The 2023 event, hosted by Boss Women Media, announced the winners of the pitch competition sponsored by Capital One.

Felicia Jackson, the founder of the first air tool maker, CPR Wraps, took home the top prize of $50,000.

“It’s all thanks to the unwavering support of our amazing community,” the company wrote on Instagram. “This weekend was a reminder that when we come together, we can achieve greatness.”

According to Jackson’s website, the CPR-certified medical professional created the CPR Wrap to help anyone in a cardiac emergency.

This year’s awardees included Sweetkiwi founder and former Shark Tank contestant Ehime Eigbe. The boss lady, known for creating her innovative frozen Greek yogurt dessert, took home the second-place grant worth $30,000.

BLACK ENTERPRISE spoke with Eigbe earlier this year about how her battle with fibroids inspired her company.

“Our mission is to change the way consumers experience food by creating food products that are delicious, nutrient-dense, and support the body in absorbing nutrients with a commitment to advocating for safe, sustainable, and equitable food systems within the communities we operate in,” Eigbe shared at the time.

Right behind her in third place at the Black Magic Reimagined Summit was businesswoman Brittany Coleman, founder of Tough Cutie, a brand that produces premium quality merino wool hiking socks. The entrepreneur was awarded $20,000 in funding.

BE previously reported on Black Magic’s plans to award three women-owned small businesses with grants during this year’s Summit. The event, which gathered Black women across various sectors of the career field, made its in-person return after being virtual for the past three years.

Boss Women Media said the 2023 summit was held on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 in Dallas. This year’s judges for the pitch competition included Amber Williams, owner and executive chef of Le Rouge Cuisine Food Co.; Mekina Raga, vice president of Business Development for Capital One Small Business Bank; and Dana Fleming, head of Customer Growth at Capital One.

Jason Derulo Denies ‘Completely False’ Claims Made By Former Artist Suing For Sexual Harassment

Jason Derulo is doing damage control after being named in a sexual harassment lawsuit by his former recording artist.

The singer and TikTok star became the talk of the town on Thursday, Oct. 5, when his former artist, Emaza Gibson, filed a sexual harassment lawsuit accusing Derulo of signing her to a record deal with the intent of having sexual relations with her.

“I’m at this point in my life right now; it’s very heartbreaking,” Gibson told NBC News.

“I have anxiety; I’m traumatized. I’ve dealt with inhumane work situations. … I’m at this point where I’m back to zero and I have nothing.”

According to Gibson, Derulo became hostile after she rejected his repeated sexual advances and invitations to dine and drink. She says the “Talk Dirty” singer eventually dropped her from his label in a move of “quid pro quo sexual harassment.”

Gibson filed her suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Thursday and is also suing for intimidation, illegal retaliatory termination, and breach of contract.

“I’m just trying to fight for what’s right, because what was done to me was not OK,” Gibson said.

“And I wouldn’t want anybody else to go through what I went through. They wasted my time. They promised me things. … ‘Forget the contract.’ That’s what I was told. But if I wasn’t going to do, if I wasn’t doing my part according to this contract, I would be in trouble. I would be held accountable.”

Derulo fired back in a video statement shared the same day the lawsuit was filed and denied Gibson’s “completely false and hurtful” allegations.

“I wouldn’t normally comment but these claims are completely false and hurtful,” he said. “I stand against all forms of harassment and I remain supportive of anybody following their dreams.”

Will Colin Kaepernick Join the XFL?

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has been out of the league for about seven years, still wants to hit the NFL playing field. After the announcement of the merger between the XFL and the USFL, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the owner of the Extreme Football League, responded to a fan who wrote that giving Kaepernick a job in the league would give the player a chance to prove to the NFL and the world that he can still play at a high level.

The user, Steven_Carillo0311, wrote, “This is where Kap should play if he wants to prove he still can.”

In response, The Rock wrote, “We met with Kaep and his agents (whom I like a lot) earlier this year. Good meeting; looked to create an opportunity for him, but I don’t think it’ll happen. We’ll see.”

This isn’t the first time Kaepernick allegedly had contact with the XFL about playing in the league.

In an interview with NPR in 2020, XFL commissioner Oliver Luck was asked about the possibility of the former NFL player competing in the league.

He responded by saying, “We gave it some thought. We have some pretty significant salary restrictions, you know. We’re a start-up league, so we want to make sure that we can be fiscally responsible and fiscally prudent. And the, you know, salary requirements that some folks, you know, shared with us were, in our case, exorbitant, so we, you know, couldn’t go down that path.”

He reiterated that his reps were looking for too much money and had to pass on the opportunity.

“I’m saying that we spoke with his representative, and the salary requirements that were broached in that conversation were exorbitant and certainly out of our range.”

The Rock has left the door open for Kaepernick to join the league; let’s see if he takes advantage of it.

Florida Judge Stands Behind Teacher Who Refused To Use Transgender Student’s Preferred Pronouns

A Florida judge supported a teacher from Miami-Dade County after she reportedly refused to use a transgender student’s preferred pronouns, CBS News reports.

Judge John Van Laningham recommended the state Education Practices Commission exonerate Yojary E. Mundaray, a former teacher at Jose de Diego Middle School, after being fired in June 2020 for the incident. Records show in December 2019, Mundaray was disciplining the student for “routine classroom horseplay,” according to the judge. The student, who was born female, privately pulled the teacher aside and let her know that he was trans and preferred using masculine pronouns.

Mundaray then said, “I’m a Christian, and my God made no mistakes,” according to the ruling. “I think God made a mistake,” the student replied.

Florida law, signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, established a school policy that states “a person’s sex is an immutable biological trait and that it is false to ascribe to a person a pronoun that does not correspond to such person’s sex.” While Mundaray was accused of pinning her religious views on the student, Van Laningham reversed the claim and, in his ruling, wrote that the “case is not about proselytizing but about transgender ideologies.”

The judge even referred to the student by “Pat” and with female pronouns. “Given that Mundaray made no attempt to force Pat to accept, conform to, or even acknowledge any Christian doctrine, the allegation that she imposed her personal religious views on Pat is untrue,” Van Laningham wrote.

During the ruling, according to the Daily Mail, Van Laningham referred to transgender people and their supporters as members of a “new secular faith.” “Advocates of transgenderism can be as doctrinaire as religious zealots these days,” he wrote.

According to the outlet, Van Laningham has been criticized for his ruling tactics, leading him to be suspended for five days after he questioned a fellow judge’s ruling, questioning if their comments could be considered “ex-parte communications” banned by Florida law.

Forget The Hairdo, Jimmy Butler Wants Wants To Be A Country Music Star

The NBA season is approaching, and the Miami Heat’s Jimmy Butler has kept his name in media publications and social media. After appearing at the Heat’s opening media session earlier this week with a new hairstyle that had the NBA world talking, he also recently revealed that he may try to join other athletes with dual careers.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, “Jimmy Buckets” told the media outlet that he surprisingly loves country music and has recorded songs that he is ready to release to the world. He states that he has already recorded 45 songs and has worked with “some real artists and songwriters.”

“I don’t want to tell anyone who I’ve been writing with because then it’ll ruin the surprise. Now, I’m in the lab writing and producing country music. We got some real artists and songwriters. We probably got around 45 tracks right now, and I hope to go write some more. Maybe a week before training camp, I’ll get down and do some,” he said.

He added that an album is coming, saying, “There’s definitely going to be an album. That’s the goal. I just don’t know when. The date I want to do it always gets pushed back because this other job that I have, playing basketball, kind of overshadows everything. [Laughs] And maybe some of the songs will be down the line for my second or third album. I can’t wait to get it to the people.”

Butler also stated that he is friends with Morgan Wallen, a. country music artist who was mired in controversy when he was seen and heard on video spewing out the N-word, which caused controversy among music lovers and Black people. Bulter said it didn’t bother him and that Wallen simply “made a mistake.”

“Wasn’t no controversy for me. I don’t even know what happened. I heard about it. I didn’t see the video. I didn’t look much into it, and I’m not going to look much into it. I don’t think he’s a bad human being in any way, shape or form,” said the NBA star.

“He is a friend of mine, and I don’t know what happened. Obviously, it was a mistake; I think he learned from it, I think he knows better, and I don’t know what was said and in what context, but I think he’s an incredible human being who made a mistake,” he added.

In fact, Butler said he wants to perform on stage with Wallen, even if it’s just one line, and if he is given the opportunity, he says he wants to sing just one line of Wallen’s song “’98 Braves.”

Social Media Gives Side Eyes To GoFundMe Started To Mourn The Death Of Ryan Carson

Social Media Gives Side Eyes To GoFundMe Started To Mourn The Death Of Ryan Carson

Daily Mail reports that the “working class” friends of late activist Ryan Carson started a GoFundMe so they can grieve properly.

Social media called his friends out for their insensitive wording, one user pointed out the money was for the friends and not a funeral. “This is incredible. I heard about the Ryan Carson GoFundMe and assumed it was for funeral costs. Nope,” @MattWalshBlog wrote. “His friends are raising money for themselves.”

Another user called the fundraising plot “cringe.” “This is next level cringe. Ryan Carson‘s friends setup a gofundme to enrich themselves because their “immediate needs are to offset the costs of working class people taking time off of work to properly mourn,” the user said. “Wow!”

Describing the collective as “working class,” the fundraiser has raised over $70,000 to date on behalf of Carson’s mourning girlfriend, Claudia Morales. While most GoFundMe campaigns show a need for funeral costs or money for the victim’s family, this one has been listed to “offset the costs of working class people taking time off of work to properly mourn.”

With the help of kind strangers, the victim’s friends can have “space and time to grieve.”

Suspect Brian Dowling allegedly stabbed Carson, who was walking down the street in Brooklyn with his girlfriend. Surveillance footage allegedly shows Dowling stabbing Carson three times, piercing him in the heart, while Morales watched in horror,

In real life, Brooklyn has been mourning the loss. According to Brooklyn Paper, over 100 friends and family gathered at Brooklyn’s Herbert Von King Park with candles to remember him hours after the attack. As an environmental advocate, friends remembered him as a “beloved” friend and mentor. Lawmakers and colleagues familiar with his work took to social media to express the depth of his loss. Sen. Julia Salazar said his passion was apparent in everything he did. “I learned a lot from Ryan in a short time. I’m better for having known him, as so many of us are,” Salazar said.

“Let us dedicate ourselves to continuing his life’s work, cut short far too soon: to harm reduction; to humane drug policy; to creating a more caring society for all of us.”

Brooklyn Assembly Member Emily Gallagher told CBS that Carson was always willing to talk. “It’s hard when the person that you go to to talk about grief is the one who died.”
