7 Intentional Ways Your Business Can Recognize Memorial Day

7 Intentional Ways Your Business Can Recognize Memorial Day

Besides grilling, sitting by a lake or pool and enjoying time with friends or family, there’s one more thing many of us associate with Memorial Day: sales.

In the weeks leading up to the annual holiday, you can’t miss the constant ads for deals, discounts and promotions at businesses across the nation. It’s supposed to be a day to honor and remember those who’ve died serving in the U.S. military, so why do we even have Memorial Day sales?

Some credit it to warmer weather pushing people outdoors (and to the shops); how Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer; the three-day weekend giving millions of people more time to buy; and even just simply the tradition of it.

But the commercialization of Memorial Day is not unlike any other holiday—, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving/Black Friday and Christmas sales to name a few—and it brings in tons of revenue for businesses across the country, sometimes even more than Black Friday. However, if a business doesn’t acknowledge what the day is actually for but jumps on the chance to offer deals and promos to rake in the money, it can rub people—especially veterans—the wrong way.

Here are seven ways to respectfully commemorate Memorial Day while still putting on special promotions and discounts.

Celebrate your military veteran employees

Get photos (from when they were in the service) and profiles of all veteran employees. Circulate this to the entire company with a message from leadership, and you can even consider posting the photos on social media with messages from the veterans themselves.

“This will highlight the contributions of your veterans plus reinforce the positive attributes of military service that align with your internal culture,” says Joe Beard, former  captain, West Point graduate and CEO and co-founder of CollateralEdge.

“It is also a great way for your employees to learn about each other.”

Recognize Memorial Day on your business’ social media pages and website

The first critical step: Don’t say “Happy Memorial Day.” This holiday is not the same as wishing someone a “happy holidays”—it’s a somber day to pause and reflect on the sacrifice millions of soldiers made for our freedoms.

Use your social media pages and website to share a veteran’s story or to share the history of Memorial Day and its significance. You could add icons or widgets on your website that link to community Memorial Day event information, historical facts about the holiday or national organizations for people to donate money or volunteer.

Sponsor or participate in a local Memorial Day event in your town

Cities and towns across the country observe Memorial Day with parades, fundraisers and community events. Sponsoring or  at a local Memorial Day event not only gets your business’ name out there, but it also connects you to the community in the right way.

“I believe everyone should take a day to remember why Americans can live the way we do. It is because of the fallen that we get to live in peace and comfort,” says Kyle Retter, U.S. veteran and owner of Fitness Premier 24/7 Clubs.

Volunteer at a veterans memorial cemetery

No matter if it’s a specific service project, general cleanup or even placing flags by tombstones, there are plenty of ways to participate. If there’s a veterans memorial cemetery nearby, gather your staff to volunteer for a day, or even a few hours.

“Memorial Day is about what we as a nation have achieved through the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. Not the rich, not the poor, but all of us, together,” says Zachary Malone, co-owner of EZ Elopements LLC and U.S. Army veteran.

“I think giving back is what truly honors those who have gone before us, and an organized platform such as a company or local office can do a lot of good in a small amount of time.”

Invite a veteran to speak to your team

If you don’t have any veterans on staff (or they aren’t willing to share their experiences), bringing a veteran in to talk with your team is a great way to get people focused on what Memorial Day really means.

“There are generations of veterans that are passing away, and they all have fascinating stories to tell,” Beard says.

“The inspiration and learnings could be unlimited for your team. Additionally, it’s a great way to honor a veteran.”

Donate a portion of Memorial Day sale proceeds

If you’re offering special sales for the holiday, consider donating all or a portion of the proceeds to a trusted charitable organization that helps families of fallen veterans or veterans in general. About 25,000 children have lost a parent who was an active duty member in the military in the past 35 years, according to Children of Fallen Patriots, with 60 percent of families reporting having trouble making ends meet.

Here are just a few of the thousands of organizations aimed at helping veterans and their families. Your city leaders might also have options to consider that are more local:

Hire a veteran, or initiate a program around hiring veterans

Although this is more of a long-term suggestion rather than a specific Memorial Day commemoration, it’s an effective way to honor veterans beyond the weekend.

“Transitioning from the military can be really difficult for many soldiers, especially those wounded in combat. What better way to honor veterans than by making sure you employ them and give them opportunities to continue contributing to society?” Beard says.

“Undoubtedly these employees will bring the right work ethic and cultural norms that will be additive to most businesses. This is really putting your money where your mouth is for senior executives.”

Vice President Kamala Harris Makes History At West Point Military Academy

Just as the season for honorary degrees and graduation ceremonies is winding down, Vice President Kamala Harris made history—once again—at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point May 27. Madam Vice President became the first woman to deliver a commencement speech to the United States military school’s graduating class of 2023. The military academy and White House shared an announcement with the public earlier in May, that Harris’ would be a keynote speaker at the ceremony, and that the event is an inaugural mark in the institution’s 221-year history.

“We are honored to have the Vice President as our commencement speaker,” said Lt. Gen. Steven W. Gilland, U.S. Military Academy’s 61st superintendent. “As an accomplished leader who has achieved significant milestones throughout her career, we look forward to her inspiring remarks to our cadets.”

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-_H938p2P6s

Harris is no stranger to making history. As you already know, the former California state senator became the first Black woman to hold office as the United States Vice President. It was a phenomenal feat ushered in by the 2020 presidential election. As a Black woman who is also of Jamaican and South Asian descent, the impact and importance of diversity is not lost on the nation’s number two in command and she was sure to include diversity and inclusion in her address to the graduating body: “To the class of 2023 and to all the cadets here today. You stand on the broad shoulders of generations of Americans who have worn the uniform, including many barrier breakers and trailblazers,” Madam Vice President stated. “In fact, this year, you celebrate the 75th anniversary of the integration of women in the military, as well as the desegregation of our military.”

“These milestones are a reminder of a fundamental truth: Our military is strongest when it fully reflects the people of America,” she continued.

BLACK ENTERPRISE spoke with Harris back in 2019 at Women of Power Summit when her name emerged as a potential candidate to be the first female president. The now-Vice President has promoted equity and diversity long before she became one of the most powerful women in the U.S.

Similar to the graduating cadets at West Point, Harris readies herself for the next steps in her life. She gears up to hit the 2024 Presidential campaign trail alongside President Joe Biden.

5 Mouthwatering Cocktails To Try This Memorial Day Weekend

5 Mouthwatering Cocktails To Try This Memorial Day Weekend

I don’t know about you, but when I hear ‘summer cocktails,’ I instantly think of colorful, refreshing, and fruity drinks. Not sure what to serve guests this upcoming Memorial Day? Don’t fret. Check out these five delicious cocktail recipes for a Memorial Day you won’t forget…or will you?

1. The Red, White, and Blue Cooler

Drinks
JoyJolt Spirits Stemless Wine Glasses (Amazon)
  • 1 pint of fresh (or frozen) strawberries
  • 1 pint of fresh (or frozen) blueberries
  • 1 pint of vanilla frozen yogurt
  • Vodka
  • Seltzer water

Puree the strawberries and blueberries separately in a blender or food processor. In a glass, add a layer of the strawberries, then blueberries, a helping of vodka, and then top with frozen yogurt. Top off this cocktail with a splash of seltzer!

2. Watermelon Margarita

Drinks

  • 1 lime wedge
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 3 1/2 cups cubed seeded watermelon
  • 1/2 cup tequila
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon Triple Sec (orange-flavored liqueur)
  • Lime wedges or watermelon balls (optional)

Put 2 teaspoons of sugar in a saucer. Rub lime wedges on the glasses, spin rim of each glass in sugar to coat. Combine watermelon with the remaining ingredients (through Triple Sec) in a blender; process until smooth. Fill each prepared glass with 1/2 cup crushed ice. Add 1/2 cup margarita to each glass. Garnish the cocktail with lime wedges or melon balls, if desired.

3. Grilled Citrus and Grape Sangria

Attendees enjoyed tropical drinks at the festival.
  • 3 cups stemmed seedless red grapes
  • 2 oranges, cut crosswise into 1/2-inch wheels
  • 2 lemons, cut crosswise into 1/2-inch wheels
  • Two 750-milliliter bottles rosé
  • 8 ounces simple syrup (3 minutes to make simple syrup: Combine equal amounts of sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil; simmer, stirring constantly, until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then remove the syrup from the heat and let cool completely. This cocktail can be refrigerated in a glass jar for up to 1 month)
  • 8 ounces brandy
  • Ice

Light a hardwood charcoal fire. Put the grapes on a perforated grill sheet or in a grill basket and grill over high heat, tossing occasionally, until they just start to burst, about 6 minutes.

Next, move the grapes to a plate to cool completely. Meanwhile, grill the orange and lemon wheels over high heat, turning once, until lightly charred, about 6 minutes. Then transfer to a plate to cool completely.

In a large pitcher, combine the wine with the simple syrup, brandy and grilled fruit and stir well. Refrigerate until the sangria is chilled and the flavors are blended, at least 1 hour and up to 8 hours. Serve the sangria over ice.

4.  Strawberry Basil MargaritasMakes 1 pitcher

  • 1 can (12 ounces) frozen limeade concentrate
  • 10 strawberries
  • 8 basil leaves
  • 2 to 2 1/2 cups tequila (gold or silver)

Empty the limeade concentrate into a pitcher. Add 2 1/2 cans of water and 1 1/2 (18 ounces, or 2 1/4 cups) cans of tequila (or a bit less, if you don’t want your drinks to be quite as strong).

Hull the strawberries, slice lengthwise, and add to the pitcher. Crumple the basil a little in your hands (this will help the basil flavor release into the drink) and add it to the pitcher, too. Place the pitcher, covered, in the fridge overnight, or for at least four hours.

When you remove the pitcher from the fridge, your margaritas will be a lovely pale pink color. Now all you have to do is serve this cocktail and wait for the compliments to pour in.

5. Piña Colada

Cocktails

  • 4 oz. spiced rum
  • 4 oz. coconut milk
  • 1/3 c. fresh pinapple chunks
  • splash pineapple juice
  • 1 cup ice
  • 2 maraschino cherries

Add rum, coconut milk, pineapple chunks and juice to a blender with ice. Blend until smooth. Pour into 2 glasses. Garnish each glass with a pineapple chunk and a maraschino cherry.

Howard University Gets A Girls’ Lacrosse Camp This Summer Thanks To Nike

A new sports program has just started on the campus of Howard University.

US Sports Camps announced that there is a new Nike Girls Lacrosse Camp at District of Columbia’s well-known historical Black college and university (HBCU). The school is also home to the first—and only—collegiate all-Black Women’s Lacrosse team in the world.

The Nike Girls Lacrosse Camp is a three-day camp, that will be offered this summer from July 24-26. Participating athletes will learn to sharpen their lacrosse skills and learn more about the sport through drills, strategy sessions and competitive play.

“US Sports Camps is delighted to expand our HBCU partnership with the Nike Girls Lacrosse Camp at Howard University, a historic college setting that inspires young talent to reach for the stars,” said Senior Vice President Paul Merrion in a written statement.

”We’re thrilled to work with Karen Healy-Silcott—an international player and respected mentor—and her experienced staff who will deliver focused training to every player with a low student-to-coach ratio. Outlets like this in the DC area can be life-changing, as young girls leave with new life skills and friendships that foster success—in lacrosse, in academics, and in life.”

Karen Healy-Silcott will be the Nike Girls Lacrosse Camp Director and Head Coach. She has been the head coach of the Howard Bisons in 2021, the same year Howard University’s women’s lacrosse team joined the Northeast Conference (NEC). Healy-Silcott has more than 20 years of coaching experience. She also served as the Jamaica National Women’s Lacrosse team captain in the last World Cup qualifying event.

“I’m excited to partner with Nike Lacrosse Camps and am confident the girls will have a fun and memorable camp experience that elevates their lacrosse game,” Healy-Silcott stated.

“We encourage beginners and advanced level players alike to—as the Nike slogan goes— ‘Bring your best, then better it.’ Campers come in at different competencies and everyone learns differently so our sessions focus on skill-building and helping girls find success at every level.”

Girls between the ages of 10 and 18, can sign up for the Nike Girls Lacrosse Camp at Howard University on the website. Lacrosse players will be divided into a “complete skills camp” for ages 10-13 and an “advanced skills camp” for ages 14-18.

Diddy ‘Acts Bad’ And Spends Big Bank On A City Girl’s Shopping Spree

Diddy ‘Acts Bad’ And Spends Big Bank On A City Girl’s Shopping Spree

Diddy strikes out again with his on again-off again partner Yung Miami, one half of the City Girls rap duo. This time the father of seven was seen looking stressed in a Chanel store, as the City Girl flashed wads of cold cash and ran up a pretty healthy shopping tab. It can be assumed the media mogul and DeLeon dealer picked up the tab.

Yung Miami confirmed that Diddy did, indeed, drop dollars on her shopping spree. She shared a recording of their high end outing on Instagram. The caption read: “He wanna sponsor my #ACTBAD Thank you Papi,” and closed with a diversity of heart emojis.

There are a couple of moments when a very wealthy Diddy looks pressed and perturbed as Yung Miami acts bad, spends his cash, twerks, selects clothing and a designer purse or two. He rubs his head in despair and follows her, as she prances out of the Chanel store, arms heavy with multiple “Black Chanel bags.”

The video clip features the song “Act Bad,” and comes on the heels of Diddy’s current summer single featuring Yung Miami, JT and Fabolos.

As can be expected, social media users sounded off in the comments with their takes on the Diddy/Caresha dynamic. Some spoke to the City Girl sticking around for Diddy dollars:

“Caresha smarter than y’all give her credit for … compare her life before and after diddy,” sweeterthejuicee posted.

“He don’t claim her” but that account cleared every time,” _jworld commented.

Others spoke to the media mogul’s marketing prowess and the timing of Yung Miami’s IG post.

“Y’all are marketing geniuses,” breakin_g.curses chimed in.

As the popular saying goes, “It ain’t trickin’ if you got it,” and we’re quite sure Diddy has deep pockets—and business acumen in and out of romantic relationships.

Shannon Sharpe Loses $1 Million Worth Of Property In Home Burglary

Famed sports commentator and NFL alum Shannon Sharpe is $1 million short of designer watches, jewelry, and bags that were stolen from his Los Angeles home.

On May 26, word got out on the home burglary Sharpe fell victim to one week before after the former NFL player left his home for just a few hours, TMZ reports. The robbery took place on May 19 between 7 PM and 9:30 PM while the “Undisputed” host was enjoying dinner with friends.

Upon arriving at his house, Sharpe noticed things appeared off so he called the police. When cops arrived, the “Club Shay Shay” host told authorities that he was missing expensive watches, jewelry, and some designer bags.

Police found no obvious signs of forced entry and an investigation remains ongoing. However, Sharpe is taking matters into his own hands and has reportedly offered a $50k reward for anyone with information on the potential suspects.

He has been continuing his hosting duties alongside Skip Bayless on their FS1 show without making any mention of the incident.

Fans have been responding to news of the burglary in the wake of the news hitting the press. Some remain skeptical about the possibility of the burglary being an inside job or if the robbers were tipped off by Sharpe’s social media activity.

“Let me guess he posted on social media he was out at a restaurant,” one critic wrote on NBC Sports. “I do not know why these people have the need to make things easier for thieves.”

“My first devious thought was did Sharpe recently up his insurance policy?” asked someone else.

Others questioned if Sharpe has security and made comedic correlations to Sharpe’s ongoing feud with former NBA player Kwame Brown.

“So rich people don’t have guards 24/7 protection at their houses ?” one fan tweeted.

“Shannon going through it,” added another.

Tina Turner Fans Go In On Beyoncé and Jay-Z For ‘Eat The Cake Anna Mae’ Song Lyric On ‘Drunk In Love’

It’s no secret how much Beyoncé adored Tina Turner and credited her as one of her role models. But the decorated Grammy winner is under fire for allowing her husband to make a “mockery” of the music legend on her 2013 hit “Drunk In Love.”

Beyhive fans are well aware of the song lyric in question. On Queen Bey’s chart-topping 2013 hit off her self-titled album, Jay-Z makes a reference to the domestic abuse Tina Turner suffered during her marriage to Ike Turner.

“Beat the box up, like Mike in ’97, I bite / I’m Ike Turner, turn up baby, no, I don’t play/ Baby, no, I don’t play, now eat the cake, Anna Mae/Said eat the cake, Anna Mae!.”

The lyric refers to Ike and Tina by name before referencing Tina’s maiden name Anna Mae Bullock. The “eat the cake Anna Mae” line was made infamous from the 1993 Tina Turner biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It” starring Angela Bassett and Lawrence Fishburne.

While no one made a huge issue about the lyric at the time of the song’s release, Tina Turner fans are speaking out in the wake of the music icon’s death on Wednesday. Fans and critics have been taking to social media to call out Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and other music artists who have made lighthearted references to Tina and Ike’s domestic violence-plagued marriage.

“I keep thinking about how disrespectful it was for Jay-Z and Beyonce to have that ‘Drunk in Love’ lyric making fun of Tina Turner’s abuse from Ike…,” one fan tweeted.

“A reminder that Jay-Z and Beyoncé on ‘Drunk in Love’ say these words, mocking Tina Turner (Anna Mae) being beaten up by Ike Turner, & ref the moment he pushed her face into her celebration cake to abuse her,” another user added.

https://twitter.com/DrJessTaylor/status/1661475844492259328

One fan explained why they refuse to even listen to “Drunk In Love” because of the shady reference to Tina and Ike.

“Reflecting on Tina’s legacy, I’ve always been surprised + disappointed how her being a domestic violence survivor somehow always turned into a joke, esp. in rap music,” they wrote. “That’s one reason I don’t play Drunk in Love often, because of Jay Z’s verse + his reference to ‘eat the cake.’”

https://twitter.com/DrJessTaylor/status/1661475844492259328

The criticism came after Beyoncé took to her website to write a statement in response to the passing of the “beloved queen” Tina.

“I love you endlessly. I’m so grateful for your inspiration, and all the ways you have paved the way. You are strength and resilience,” Beyoncé wrote.

“You are the epitome of power and passion. We are all so fortunate to have witnessed your kindness and beautiful spirit that will forever remain. Thank you for all you have done.”

Beyoncé celebrated Tina Turner throughout her career and even performed alongside the Queen of Rock N Roll at the 2008 Grammys.

Black Woman Creates TikTok Filter That Helps You Make Straight Parts When Styling Your Hair

Black Woman Creates TikTok Filter That Helps You Make Straight Parts When Styling Your Hair

A Black woman engineer is receiving praise on TikTok for sharing the development process behind her new filter that helps users create perfect middle parts.

On May 23, TikTok user @Krysanthum shared a video unveiling the middle part filter she designed for the large community of people who struggle to perfect their hair parts.

“My fellow unmiddle partians, lemme know if this Middle Part Filter works for you,” she captioned her post.

@krysanthum My fellow unmiddle partians, lemme know if this Middle Part Filter works for you #middlepartfilter #blackhairtiktok #hairparttutorial #middlepart ♬ Hot Music – Soho

She kicks off the video with a question directed at her target audience, “Do you struggle with your middle part? Well, me too.”

The video shows the engineer attempting to align her filter with the middle of her head before trying it out on her brother. While the initial filter worked, there “some problems” that she made her go back to “the drawing board” and fix.

“I open up my iPad and I’m trying to figure out what’s the best way to know that your line is straight,” she asked.

Which helped her come up with the filter she dubbed “this line thingy” that helps user properly align their hair parts with the middle of their face. When using the filter, turning your head too much would show a green color that means the part isn’t in alignment with your face.

“You don’t want to see green at all. You just want to see pink,” she explained. “Then I created some graphics to help you figure out how to use this filter.”

She shows TikTokers how to use the filter by keeping their head straight and going along the pink line with your comb to create your hair part.

“Hopefully this will help us have the most middlest part ever,” she quipped.

The new filter inspired her next project, a filter that helps you create multiple parts in your head for box braids. The TikTok community has been applauding the engineer for her innovative STEM skills that can be used by all.

“Black Women in STEM,” one user wrote.

“A braid part filter?! BLESS YOU,” added someone else.

“WHEN WE SAY BLK WMN IN STEM THIS WHAT WE TALMBOUT,” one user declared.
