‘America, You Next?’ Ghana Bans The Death Penalty 30 Years After Last Execution

The country of Ghana has had a change of heart, as it has voted to get rid of the death penalty, ABC News reports.

Ghana’s parliament reversed the severe punishment after more than 30 years for every crime except high treason, deeming it “inhumane.” The vote was passed on July 25, and Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, is expected to sign it into law.

Human rights advocates such as Enoch Jengre, program officer of Ghana’s Legal Resource Center, are celebrating the change. “Ghana is upholding the constitutional and fundamental human right of everyone,” Jengre said. “No human being or institution should have the right to take the life of another.”

Once a standard practice in certain African nations, capital punishment is becoming less common now, with Ghana’s last state execution held in 1993. More than 25 African countries banned the practice altogether, but Ghana and 14 others did everything but stop executions since 2022, as reported by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty.

With the new change, 176 death row inmates, including six women, will now serve life in prison.

There are detractors, however. “It is going to encourage some people to engage in crime knowing that they will only end up in prison after conviction,” Raymond Kuudaah, a Ghanaian social worker, opined.

Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, the lawyer and politician behind the bill, says the decision was made with the families of former victims in mind. “I have seen firsthand that the death penalty does not bring a sense of justice or closure to the families of crime victims, and neither does it deter offenders,” Sosu said, according to The Guardian.

“It was my view that we as a nation were better than this. I introduced these bills because I wanted the courts to cease imposing an inhuman punishment.”

Close to 900 executions were recorded in 2022, up 53% since 2021. In the past five years, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, and Zambia have abolished the death penalty.

Jay-Z Makes Surprise Visit To A Black, Family-Owned Chicago Soul Food Restaurant

Beyoncé is on the road for her “Renaissance World Tour” and recently stopped in Chicago. An appearance by her husband, ShawnJay-Z” Carter, at a local Black-owned restaurant brought a buzz to the neighborhood of Bronzeville.

According to CBS 2 Chicago, the Brooklyn rapper caused a stir when he went to eat at Bronzeville Soul. The visit caught the eatery’s owners, Mario Coleman, and Angie Price, by surprise, and one of them even thought about the prospect of the married couple stopping by while in town.

Price said she had a hunch that may have preceded Jay-Z’s visit. “Beyoncé concert is in town this weekend. Wouldn’t it be great if they came to the restaurant, and lo and behold, it happened,” Price said.

“I couldn’t believe it was him. Actually, when I first saw him, I didn’t think it was him. I thought it was someone else acting like Jay-Z,” Coleman said.

Could someone have told the billionaire businessman about the venue? He specifically ordered short ribs and pound cake.

“It kind of messed me up that he even knew to ask for it. So by him asking for it, it was just like, wow, Jay-Z knows about Bronzeville Soul.”

Coleman mentioned that the entertainer told him he heard of the spot through word of mouth.

“His actual words to me was once he looked us up and saw it was a Black business, he did tell me he wanted to support Black businesses, and he said, that’s why I’m here. He said they said the food is good.”

It was a great day for the restaurant owners as word spread that Jay-Z was at Bronzeville Soul.

Father-Daughter Duo Opens Coffee Shop In The Heart Of Their Chicago Community

A father-daughter duo in Chicago aims to warm the soul of their community with a new coffee shop.

On Juneteenth, father and daughter Robbie and Destiny Wilkerson hosted a soft launch for Urban Essentials Coffee Cafe. According to Book Club Chicago, the business owners are looking forward to an official grand opening for the cafe in Soul City Corridor in August 2023.

Urban Essentials Coffee Cafe will open to the general public with a tasty spread of cafe goodies like coffee, cappuccinos, blended drinks, tea, cakes, muffins, sandwiches, and wraps. According to the outlet, city officials, including Mayor Brandon Johnson, will attend the grand opening.

The two family members want the cafe to be where good vibes flow. Destiny has a positive outlook on how the community is and might continue to react to Urban Essentials Coffee Cafe. “With any new business, you get nervous, and you want it to go well,” Destiny said. “But it’s been going well, and we’re excited to see it come together.”

Money makes the world go around. And building wealth is a must for Black people. The father-daughter duo spent $65,000 on the cafe and hopes it will encourage the Black dollar to circulate in the community. “All these building vacancies, to me, says there’s not a lot of money circulating within the community,” Robbie said. The father added, “I’m one man, but it is my effort to create a new economic drive to our community. We hope we can inspire others to build, as well.”

Robbie’s vision for others to build the Austin community might happen sooner. Book Club Chicago reported other groups are working to heal the community of harsh realities. LIVE FREE Illinois is opening 13 church resource centers to help heal gun violence trauma, the chapter’s parent LIVE FREE USA noted.

Antares

Thanks To Antares Capital, $1M In Grants Is Available To Support Underrepresented Founders

For a second year, private debt firm Antares Capital is issuing $1 million in grants to underrepresented founders, including Black women business owners. Antares is uniting with technology firm Hello Alice on the initiative.

A recent McKinsey & Company report revealed that in 2022 Black founders received just 1% of total U.S. venture capital funding, with a measly 0.1% of that going to Black and Latino female founders.

The Antares program will award about 40 businesses $20,000 each in grants.  Up to 25 grant recipients will also be considered for participation in Antares’ Growth Track program, a digital community space which offers monthly business coaching workshops, mentorship and networking resources.

The grant effort is part of REACH, a program Antares rolled out in 2022 to help diverse and historically underrepresented groups. Check its terms and conditions to learn more and apply

“We launched the REACH program to expand the flow of capital to historically underrepresented groups to address these discrepancies at the root level,” said Mary Rose, head of Responsible Investment Strategy at Antares.

As part of REACH, Antares also backs grassroots community partners to help create a stronger support ecosystem for historically underrepresented small business owners. See more details here.

That capital support is truly needed. Financing has become increasingly difficult for Black founders. BLACK ENTERPRISE reported that Black founders raised an estimated $2.254 billion compared to the $215.9 billion in U.S. venture capital allocated in 2022.

Further, financial backing fell 45% for those businesses last year, making it the largest year-over-year decline for Black entrepreneurs. The numbers offer a grim insight into how challenging VC funding can be for Black founders and business owners.
Simultaneously, roughly three years ago, many of the nation’s largest corporations vowed tens of billions of dollars to support economic growth and new opportunities for Black businesses and individuals. But a significant amount of that funding has not materialized.

William B. Allen, Author of Florida’s Controversial Slavery Curriculum, Responds to Criticism

Florida lawmakers and conservative Florida political adviser Dr. William B. Allen have drawn the ire of Vice President Kamala Harris following their latest legislation on how slavery is taught in classrooms.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state’s legislators have been under fire over the past year after implementing some of the country’s most restrictive laws regarding LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, and school curricula. Their latest attack is on teaching slavery in schools.

Florida’s 2023 State Academic Standards for Social Studies outlines new changes in how slavery, the Holocaust, and other historical events will be taught. While the expansive list features many documented truths, including the Underground Railroad and the horrific working conditions of the enslaved, tucked into the packet is a “benchmark clarification” about how slaves “developed skills” which could be “applied for their personal benefit.” Aimed toward sixth through eighth graders, this new standard will now be included in the Social Studies African American curriculum in schools across the state.

Vice President Harris denounced this decision in a speech during the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority national convention in Indiana on July 20. “They insult us in an attempt to gaslight us and we will not stand for it. We who share a collective experience in knowing we must honor history in our duty in the context of legacy. There is so much at stake in this moment,” she said. Harris also took to Twitter to express her anger.

Gov. DeSantis, who has been busy on the campaign trail ahead of the 2024 presidential election, pushed back against Harris’s criticism on Twitter, using her statements to condemn the LGBTQ+ community again.

Dr. William B. Allen, who co-authored the pamphlet, defended himself during a sit-down with Local 10 News. “We need to tell the people’s stories the way they told their stories, not to fit our expectations,” said the conservative. He continued, “The stories of the people who lived through the history, they have a right to tell the story in their own words, and what we have provided for is the telling of those stories as they told it.”

Allen is the former chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and is currently a member of Florida’s African American History Standards Workgroup, which, according to the Florida Times-Union, is the group that approved the standards for the curriculum.

A Brooklyn Beauty Is The First Black Woman To Represent USA In The Miss Intercontinental Pageant

Another Black woman has made history in the world of pageantry.

New York native Amber Corbett has been selected to represent the United States at the 2023 Miss Intercontinental pageant, which marks the first time a Black woman has done so since the beauty pageant began, in 1971.

According to The Villager, the 23-year-old was crowned by Katherine McQuade, the United States of America’s Miss 2023, on July 22. “Winning Miss Intercontinental USA felt like I was breaking a glass ceiling in itself because, in 51 years, there’s never been a Black Miss Intercontinental USA,” Corbett said.

The Brooklyn resident will use her platform to continue promoting diversity and representation in the media. “I’m planning doing a safe space and hav[ing] Zoom calls for women of color to do networking. Because as a woman of color in media, it’s such a small industry,” said Corbett, whose support resource, “She’s Represented,” is a space for women of color in corporate America to network and unwind.

As Miss Intercontinental USA, Corbett will represent as the goodwill ambassador for the Miss Intercontinental Organization, focusing on societal issues such as drug abuse, poverty eradication, gender equality, health, nutrition, and environmental conservation.

The pageant queen completed her studies at Pace University last May, graduating cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in advertising and integrated marketing communication. She extended her studies with a minor in digital marketing.

A once shy Corbett began competing in pageants at the early age of 11. Her pageant titles include Miss Galaxy NY 2021, Miss Galaxy NY Teen 2015, Miss Earth NY Teen 2015, Miss United States NY Jr Teen 2015, and IJM Junior Teen 2015.

The Miss Intercontinental beauty pageant will be held in October 2023, and its winner will be named Miss “POWER OF BEAUTY.”

Kimora Lee Simmons Cashes Out On Lavish Beverly Hills Mansion, Sells For $16.5M

Kimora Lee Simmons is a few million bucks richer after selling her luxurious nine-bedroom, 10-bathroom Beverly Hills mansion.

The model and entrepreneur finalized the sale of her 9,405-square-foot home earlier this month, TMZ reports. Simmons made a $5.5 million profit, as she paid $11 million for the house in 2008.

The mother of five was living the good life in the lavish estate with Greek-style columns at the entryway, a chandeliered dining room, mahogany wood-paneled library, butler’s pantry, spa, gym, wine cellar, pool, and Bridgerton-esque garden.

The master bedroom where Simmons slept includes a wood-burning fireplace, a private balcony, and dual baths with walk-in closets, as noted by The Dirt. The Baby Phat CEO didn’t get the $23 million she initially asked for when putting the home on the market in January.

But after several years of putting the home on and off the rental market, Simmons found an eager buyer who talked her down a few million. The new owner has already put the home back on the market for a short/long-term lease option of $100,0000 a month.

It’s far more than the $62,500 per month Simmons was offering to lease the place in December 2022. While the new owner has plans of moving into the home full-time, they’re trying to rent it out for the time being.

Meanwhile, she and her children reside in a separate Beverly Park mansion, reportedly as part of a long-term lease-back arrangement. She recently defended her two eldest daughters, Aoki and Ming Lee Simmons, after they called out their father, Russell Simmons, on Father’s Day.

The trio accused the hip-hop mogul of sending threatening messages. Kimora addressed the family rift during an appearance at Essence Fest earlier this month, as reported by People.

“I’m always ok. You guys know I’m a tough chick,” Kimora said.

“We’ve been through a difficult time and I like for people to say, ‘I love Aoki. We love Ming,’ ” she added.

Judge Greg Mathis Accused Of Threatening LA City Workers With A Gun

Judge Greg Mathis is on the opposite side of the law this time around after he was accused of pulling a gun out on a group of city workers.

An employee with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power filed a police report on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, accusing the famed television judge of threatening workers with a gun, TMZ reports. Both sides gave police different versions of what allegedly went down.

Mathis, however, claims the workers were blocking his vehicle, preventing him from leaving his driveway. However, the Detroit native told TMZ he only made mention of having a gun and didn’t pull it out on the workers.

Both parties eventually about their day. But the LADWP workers still filed a claim with the police.

Authorities are reportedly investigating incident and Mathis is gearing up for his return to court television with Mathis Court, Variety reports.

9 Beaches To Visit Throughout The Black Diaspora

What really is summertime without a beach time?

After months of winter weather, there’s nothing that hits the spirit like a sprawling coastline with soft waves, beating against the shore. The sensation of smooth sand between your toes and a glowing suntan alone makes a vacay or simple trip to the beach worth it.

Some people may think if you’ve seen one beach, you’ve seen them all–obviously, that’s not true. Especially, when we’re talking about beaches that exist in the Blackest regions where African and Black culture inform the vibe and creates the moment–because Black people and Blackness remain undefeated.

Here are 10 beautiful beaches to visit throughout the Black diaspora.

1.) Barbados

Pebbles Beach in Barbados is a great beach to visit for a family vacation as the low tides are excellent for children. The experience of the swimming horses is also something to marvel at when they’re brought out to swim and bathe. Pebble Beach is also a good place to try a “cutter,” what the residents call a fish sandwich. Cuz’s fish stand is one of the best places to taste one.

2.) Haiti

Labadee beach located in Haiti, has a view so beautiful you would think you’re in a movie. The sea is calm here, which sets the tone for relaxation and light swimming. If you get tired of lounging, Labadee has the longest zipline in the whole world that runs over water and a range of great restaurants with ocean views. One is Boukanye, known to have the best cocktails in the area.

The land is also blessed with beach bars and restaurants like Coconut INT, where you can indulge in outstanding Jamaican cuisine.

5.) Ghana

Laying in the heart of Western Africa, Kokrobite Beach embodies the meaning of Black diaspora.
