Black Men See Unemployment Increase Amid Job Market Slowdown And Economic Uncertainty

A pair of jobs reports for January indicate that despite an otherwise stable job market, employer hiring trends suggest that the economy could be heading for a downturn.

A pair of jobs reports for January indicate that despite an otherwise stable job market, employer hiring trends suggest that the economy could be heading for a downturn as Trump’s proposed tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada come closer to becoming a reality.

According to CNBC, unemployment for Black men and Asian Americans increased in January, as did the number of people actively looking for work. Although the overall percentage is modest, Black worker’s unemployment rate overall ticked higher to 6.2% from the 6.1% rate in December 2024; Black men, specifically, saw a significant increase.

The unemployment rate for Black men climbed to 6.9% in January, up from December 2024, when it was at 5.6%. Black women, meanwhile, remained steady at their 5.4% unemployment rate from December.

Ellie Gould, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, told the outlet that although the numbers for Black men appear concerning, part of the uptick results from a change in the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ survey tools.

Those changes include seasonal adjustment factors, like year-end turnover from companies ahead of the beginning of a new fiscal year, an annual benchmark revision to past payroll data, and the inclusion of new U.S. Census data incorporating labor force characteristics.

“I think you would need to see a few months of that elevation, and not just a blip in the data, to think that there was something sinister going on,” Gould remarked to CNBC. Still, Gould noted, “Obviously, just the simple fact that it’s so much higher than other groups is a systemic problem in and of itself.”

Another report, this one from CNN, cited a jobs report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Feb. 7. The report indicated that the country fell short of the 170,000 jobs estimated to be added in January.

The country added only 143,000 jobs instead of 170,000. Although various economists indicated that the economy is expected to remain stable enough to support a pullback from the Fed’s anti-inflation measures, some companies are beginning to hire as though they are already in a recession.

According to Oliver Allen, a senior U.S. economist at Pantheon Microeconomics, “That leaves us in a situation where things can essentially flip quite quickly, because you’ve already got companies hiring as if they’re in a recession — even if they’re not laying people off.”

As Michelle Holder, an associate professor of economics at John Jay College at the City University of New York, told CNN, Trump’s proposed tariffs could erode historic gains made by Black workers, women, Latinx workers, and other underrepresented members of the American labor force.

“Tariffs raise prices on goods and services, and when that occurs, people will buy less, and they will spend less,” Holder said. “The data, the trends are pretty crystal clear during economic downturns, during periods when [spending] declines, spending decreases in sectors where Black and Brown people are well represented.”

Holder continued, noting that Black workers, in particular, are overrepresented among federal workers, saying that Trump’s cutting of federal workers would be disastrous for them.

“Those groups that were able to participate in the growth in the economy after we were brought back from the brink after the pandemic, I think those times are over. I don’t think that the pictures for those groups get rosier,” Holder said.

Suspect In Super Bowl Reporter’s Death Linked To Decade-Long Crime Spree Of Drugging And Robbing Men

Danette Colbert reportedly has a similar modus operandi of stealing men's belongings after following them to their hotel rooms.

Danette Colbert, a 48-year-old woman from Louisiana, has been arrested for using credit cards that belong to Telemundo journalist Adan Manzano after he was found dead in a hotel room. She reportedly has an extensive criminal history, including a signature modus operandi to the crime against Manzano.

After being arrested for attempting to use Manzano’s cards at New Orleans stores, more facts about Colbert’s history have been released to the public.

On Feb. 5, Manzano, a journalist for Telemundo Kansas City who was in New Orleans to cover the upcoming Super Bowl, was found dead, and Kenner, Louisiana, authorities found security footage that showed Colbert entering the hotel room with the 27-year-old reporter before leaving later that day alone.

Although Colbert has not been charged with counts related to Manzano’s death, according to authorities, she has a long rap sheet of drugging and stealing from men across the country.

New Orleans police described her as a “career criminal.”

Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley outlined some of her notable crimes at a press conference on Feb. 7.

Colbert was arrested in 2014 after she was identified by a tourist who claimed he’d met her and returned to his hotel room with her. He said he woke up the next morning to find $100 in cash, his credit cards, and a $4,000 Rolex watch missing.

According to People, Colbert was then seen making big cash withdrawals on surveillance footage with the man’s stolen card in a similar fashion to how she intended to use Manzano’s. After she was confronted by the manager for using a stolen credit card, she called two other women to the store and physically assaulted the manager.

Colbert pleaded guilty to her role in the crime and was charged with intimidating a witness, second-degree battery, bank fraud, theft under $5000, and burglary.

While on probation in 2022, she was arrested again for a similar crime. Colbert was reportedly invited to a man’s hotel room with another unnamed woman. When the man woke the next morning, he was missing around $100,000 in cash, casino chips, jewelry, and luxury luggage.

Later that same year, Las Vegas police identified Colbert as committing a similar crime again.

In Manzano’s case, Colbert has only been charged with fraud and theft-related offenses. However, according to police, the investigation into the Super Bowl reporter’s death is still ongoing.

Pharrell Williams’ ‘Golden’ Film Shut Down Before Release

The decision to shut down 'Golden' in post-production was reportedly unanimous from both producers and directors.

Golden, a long-anticipated film about Pharrell Williams’ childhood with a star-studded cast, has been nixed and will not be released. According to an exclusive Variety report on Feb. 7, Universal Pictures shut down the project at the last minute.

Directed by Michel Gondry, “Golden” had a theatrical release date of May 5 through Universal. The film is one in a series of releases as part of its creative partnership with Williams, so the studio both financed and oversaw the effort to bring “Golden” to the big screen.

As several sources reported, however, the film project was shut down after Universal Pictures and producers unanimously agreed with Gondry that the film did not seem to meet internal expectations.

Williams said of the decision, “When all of us got into the editing room we collectively decided there wasn’t a path forward to tell the version of this story that we originally envisioned.”

Williams and Gondry told Variety, “We appreciate all the hard work of the talented cast and crew. While we’re disappointed we can’t deliver this film, we have incredible partners at Universal and will collaborate in a different capacity again soon.”

“Golden” had a stacked cast collaborating on the movie, including Pharrell Williams as the headliner, “Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, Missy Elliott, Quinta Brunson, and Anderson. Paak and Jaboukie Young-White.”

Universal will absorb the losses incurred by backing out of the movie. Apparently, around $20 million had already been put toward production costs since “Golden” was already in early post-production. Despite the unusual circumstances, all cast and crew involved have already been paid for their work.

This is not the first time Universal has worked with Williams. Last year, it released a documentary about William’s life in Lego style titled “Piece by Piece.”

In November, Williams spoke about the differences between “Piece by Piece” and the now-nixed “Golden.”
Williams said, “’Piece By Piece’ is about my life, whereas Golden is about a neighborhood that I grew up in. It’s a musical expedition set in the summer of 1977 in Virginia Beach.”

“It’s a coming-of-age story about self-discovery and pursuing your dreams, but it’s so much more magical than that. It’s a celebration of Black life, Black culture, and most importantly, Black joy,” he described at the time.

Pinterest’s ‘Tailored’ Campaign Celebrates Black Fashion’s Legacy And Future

Pinterest is celebrating the power of Black fashion in a new Black History Month campaign.

In celebration of Black History Month, Pinterest launched a visual campaign that honors Black fashion’s history, current influence, and future.

On Feb. 3, the pinboard-based social media platform unveiled the “Tailored” campaign. Made in collaboration with Blackboard, its resource group for Black employees and allies, the initiative highlights how Black fashion shapes legacies and invites everyone to start their own style journey on Pinterest.

The campaign features short ads that showcase how Black style is both generational and transformative while highlighting Pinterest as a key platform for refining personal taste and drawing inspiration from creatives worldwide.

“It gives me a lot of joy that Pinterest is a place where so many come to tell their own story—and feel included and celebrated for who they are,” said Pinterest Chief Content Officer and Blackboard executive sponsor Malik Ducard.

“That includes the many people who tailor how they define and present their personal story through Black fashion on our platform—drawing on the legacies of the past to shape their inspiration for the future. This Black History Month, I’m very proud that Pinterest is lifting up the beautiful, powerful role of Black fashion in the past, present, and future of our society through the Tailored campaign.”

Tailored has ad spots that honor the Black dandy, like fashion editor and stylist Ronald Burton III, who draws on his well-suited history to reimagine a dapper look on Brooklyn-based content creator and storyteller Joekenneth Museau. The 60-second spot highlights how Black style is both generational and transformative and Pinterest’s role in acting as a vital archive of its influence and a resource for its innovation.

As part of this campaign, Pinterest will showcase Black creators and figures, highlighting the unique ways they infuse their personal style into their outfits. Additionally, the Pinterest Shop profile will feature these influential brands, offering users the chance to discover and shop for them this month. As Black History Month 2025 progresses, Pinterest users are encouraged to explore tailored ideas and inspiration on the app.

Amid Racial Tensions, Therapist Launches Support Groups For Black Community To Heal And Prioritize Mental Health

Dr. Dionne Mahaffey is promoting group therapy sessions in response to the resurgence of racial tensions under the Trump administration.

Dr. Dionne Mahaffey, a mental health expert behind the AI therapy platform Behavioral Health Notes, is leveraging her platform to promote group therapy sessions in response to the resurgence of racial tensions under another Donald Trump administration.

On Feb. 6, Mahaffey announced the launch of her “psychoeducation groups on Facebook, which “aim to help the Black community prioritize mental health collectively.” Through six group types, participants will have a supportive space to discuss key issues affecting their well-being.

“Individual therapy is powerful, but there’s something uniquely healing about common support,” she wrote.

The group sessions participants will be able to attend include:

Collective Grief and Racial Trauma: Healing from Losses We Carry – Held weekly on Mondays at 5:30 PM ET, these sessions provide a supportive space for processing death, racial trauma, loss, and healing.

The Rage Room: Processing Righteous Anger in Healthy Ways – These weekly sessions, held on Mondays at 7:30 PM ET, guide attendees in discovering healthy and empowering ways to express and channel anger.

Black Anxiety: Coping with the Stress of Anti-Blackness – Anti-Blackness sessions, held on Thursdays at 5:30 PM ET, provide participants with strategies to cope with the emotional toll of racism, discrimination, and persistent hypervigilance.

The Black Professional Experience: Navigating Workplace Trauma – Held on Thursdays at 7:30 PM ET, these sessions will address navigating microaggressions, overcoming burnout, and managing imposter syndrome in the workplace.

The Politics of Black Rest: Reclaiming Our Right to Pause – Held weekly on Sundays at 5:30 PM ET, these sessions will delve into strategies for overcoming cultural and systemic barriers to rest, escaping grind culture, and embracing rest as a revolutionary act of self-care.

When the News is Too Much: Media Detox & Mental Wellness – These sessions, held on Sundays at 7:30 PM ET, focus on safeguarding mental health by setting boundaries around media consumption and exposure to racial trauma.

“In this critical moment, group support provides a space to be seen, heard, and affirmed,” Mahaffey wrote. These sessions aren’t just about venting— they’re about healing, learning, and building resilience in a way that individual therapy can’t always provide.”

She also invites other therapists and wellness experts to join her in co-leading the sessions covered by insurance carriers in Alabama or Georgia, and only $35 for out-of-pocket patients. Those interested can visit the Roots to Branches Wellness for more information.

Hosted By Shaq, ‘Lucky 13’ Game Show To Pay Contestants Over $460K After Bankruptcy

Actress Gina Rodriguez co-hosted the failed game show with Shaq.

ABC will pay over $460,000 to contestants who were part of the game show “Lucky 13,” hosted by basketball star Shaquille O’Neal and actress Gina Rodriguez. The payout is set to occur after the company that headed the game show declared bankruptcy.

“Lucky 13” debuted last July with Shaq and Rodriguez as hosts, airing on ABC under unconventional circumstances. The United Kingdom-based production company Studio 1 funded the show upfront before its success in exchange for a share of ABC’s advertising and product placement revenue tied to the show.

The contestants, prize winners, and Rodriguez and Shaq were never paid for their time on “Lucky 13.” According to the Independent, 13 contestants are owed prize money, with individual totals ranging from $3,750 to $125,000, totaling around $461,500.

However, “Lucky 13” fell short of expectations and did not bring in nearly as much revenue as Studio 1 wanted. After the conclusion of the first season, it was not renewed for Season Two. Studio 1 and the other two holding companies involved, Lucky 13 Holdings and Studio 13 Entertainment, declared bankruptcy soon after.

Legally, ABC is under no obligation to pay the contestants after the production company goes bankrupt, but the network has announced that the contestants will receive their earned prize money despite the circumstances.

After Studio 1 filed for bankruptcy at the end of last year, its CEO — Adrian Woolfe — explained to Deadline, “We are in the process of taking proactive protective steps to restructure the Studio 1 business and to unlock and protect the value of the now-proven Lucky 13 IP.”

He continued, “Rather than it being a direct commission, the unique commercial model on which the debut series was launched in the US was underpinned by advertising revenues, which given well-publicized market conditions regrettably, but unavoidably, fell acutely short of forecasts.”

The premise of “Lucky 13” featured contestants being asked 13 different true or false trivia questions and then predicting how many correct they got out of the 13. The ABC show had a $1 million jackpot.

George Clinton, Big Freedia Join Trombone Shorty On ‘Getting Funky In Havana’ Pilgrimage

The Trombone Shorty Foundation promotes a message of unity with its fourth annual Getting Funky in Havana pilgrimage.

The Trombone Shorty Foundation held its fourth annual Getting Funky in Havana Pilgrimage, promoting unity between the U.S. and Cuba with the message ‘Build Doors, Not Walls.”

From Jan. 16 to 20, the Trombone Shorty Foundation facilitated a vibrant cultural exchange between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Havana, Cuba, to advance its mission of inspiring the next generation of musicians. From in-depth discussions to nightly cross-cultural musical collaborations, attendees departed with unforgettable memories, meaningful cultural connections, and the inspiration to bring new ideas to life.

Nola reports that the cultural exchange trip, made in partnership with Cuba Educational Travel and Afro-Cuban musician Cimafunk, brought about 230 musicians and actors, plus eight New Orleans students, to Havana. A key component of the trip was bringing Trombone Shorty Academy students to showcase New Orleans music and collaborate with young Cuban musicians, including members of the Havana-based group Primera Linea.

During a visit to the Guillermo Tomas School of Music in Guanabacoa, the Academy band bridged language barriers through a lively jam session featuring students from both countries, culminating in a courtyard dance party with hundreds of people joining in. Other event highlights included a panel featuring Taj Mahal, Trombone Shorty, George Clinton, and Cimafunk, as well as a dynamic musical mashup where Taj Mahal performed alongside Cuban students and Trombone Shorty Foundation students, delivering a powerful American-Cuban solo set filled with vocals, horns, and percussion.

“At the heart of all we shared in Cuba is the knowledge that we are expanding hearts, dissolving borders, and spreading goodness through music and education,” Bill Taylor, founding executive director of the Trombone Shorty Foundation, said in a press release.

At night, the Getting Funky crew lit up the Amphitheater of Old Havana, blending musical styles on stage with performances by Cuban artists like Cimafunk and Los Van Van alongside New Orleans icons Big Freedia, Anjelika ‘Jelly’ Joseph, Trombone Shorty, and Big Chief Juan Pardo. George Clinton and Taj Mahal also hit the stage to perform with fellow American artists, including JoJo Hermann, Valerie June, Maurice ‘MoBetta’ Brown, and Robert Randolph, thrilling a packed Cuban audience.

“The trip was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life,” said Jarnell Demesme, Trombone Shorty Academy saxophonist. “The culture is very different, and the people are passionate about what they do. It was very fun and gave a real insight of how true touring life is. It is an experience I’ll never forget.”

The Trombone Shorty Foundation intends to continue building doors and reconnecting the worlds of New Orleans and Havana through the annual Getting Funky in Havana pilgrimage.

“Some people build walls, and some people build doors,” said Cuban national folk hero Carlos Varela, who gave an intimate performance, offering attendees a heartfelt glimpse into the essence of Cuban life through the eyes of the ‘Poet of Havana’ himself.

Up next, Trombone Shorty and the Trombone Shorty Foundation are gearing up for Shorty Fest in New Orleans on April 28.

‘American Woman In Pakistan’ Is On Her Way Back To NYC

Onijah Andrew Robinson, known as the “American Woman in Pakistan,” is leaving the country to return to the United States, Dawn.com reported.
In a statement to the outlet, South Deputy Inspector General of Police Syed Asad Raza said, “She left for the airport from JPMC.”

Raza also commented on Robinson’s travel schedule: “She was provided her ticket by the US government that listed her transit flight’s departure to Dubai for 10:40 p.m.,” Dawn.com reported.

The Black woman recently became an internet sensation after her Pakistani “catfish” saga spread all over the web. Robinson’s presence in the country became a spectacle and a cause of concern for many who lived in the area where she had resided for a time.

“Strangers are gathered in and around our apartment building every day to see the American woman. This is a matter of concern for all the residents and their safety,” a resident told Daijiworld.

The 33-year-old woman claims she was prompted to enter the country after forming an online relationship with 19-year-old Nidal Ahmed Memon. Robinson said she and Memon were planning to marry once she entered the country, but a change in plans led to her abandonment at the airport. It is reported that Memon’s family did not approve of the proposed marriage and abandoned their home to escape Robinson and her demands. Robinson stayed on the streets near Memon’s home until offered lodging in a local shelter.

Though Robinson has been in the country since October 2024, the public did not become aware of her circumstances until February 2025. Through viral videos, the “American Woman in Pakistan” story began making the rounds. Locals were seen being very accommodating to the American immigrant. She was seen turning down assistance from a local, insisting that her “husband” Memon would return for her.

While many have made light of the situation, the Pakistani governor, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori, made sure that the New York catfish scammer was treated with respect and kept safe. Tessori extended Robinson’s Visa when hers expired, allowing her to stay in the country legally. Also, Due to speculation about Robinson’s mental health, she was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for evaluation.

Robinson was admitted into the psychiatric ward at JPMC before she departed the country. According to Dawn.com, she was diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder.

Wisconsin Rep. Introduces Bill To Hide Taxpayer Information From Trump’s Favorite Ally Elon Musk

Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) introduced the 'Eliminate Looting of Our Nation by Mitigating Unethical State Kleptocracy (ELON MUSK) Act.'

Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) has introduced a bill to protect pertinent taxpayer information from President Donald Trump’s billionaire ally and admirer, Elon Musk.

The “Eliminate Looting of Our Nation by Mitigating Unethical State Kleptocracy (ELON MUSK) Act” would ban “special” government employees like Musk from having federal contracts.

“If a position like a ‘special government employee’ has the authority to recommend spending decisions by agencies, they could clearly steer federal spending to their own self-interest,” Pocan said in a Feb. 5 statement.

Pocan added, “Like the bans on receiving federal contracts for Members of Congress and many others in the federal government, it is imperative that no ‘special government employee’ should have the opportunity for personal gain, especially in areas where they can direct federal taxpayer funds.”

This comes as fallout unfolds with Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Trump tapped Musk, a private citizen, to lead the new department with an agency in charge of slashing the federal workforce and billions of dollars in government spending. However, there has been growing concern that DOGE is being used to target agencies and programs that do not align with Trump’s agenda.

Pocan said Musk spent over a quarter of a billion dollars to help elect Trump to the presidency for a second time. Since then, Pocan claims that Musk is $154 billion richer and has received a “600 times return on his investment.”

“Now, Elon Musk, an unelected billionaire, has taken control of highly sensitive information in the U.S. Treasury Department and has tried to shut down USAID without any federal oversight,” said Pocan on why he’s introducing the bill. “Contracts to his business interests by the Federal Government have exceeded $20 billion, with some additional contracts with undisclosed amounts, as in the case of Starlink.”

Added Pocan, “No one should have the ability to direct funds towards their personal interest if they are working for the federal government.”

According to Politico, Senate Democrats are also considering introducing a bill to block “unlawful access” to the Treasury Department payment system after Musk and his DOGE team gained access to it.

It is unlikely that the bill will move forward in the Republican-controlled Congress.
