Yeah! Usher Receives Honorary Doctorate From Berklee College Of Music

They’ve called him U-S-H-E-R for the past two decades, but now, Berklee College of Music says you can call him Dr. Usher.

This past weekend, R&B superstar Usher Raymond received an honorary doctorate from the renowned institution for his invaluable contributions to music and philanthropy, according to Rated R&B. The eight-time Grammy winner is amid a legendary time in his illustrious career, and this latest honor is proof that his status as an icon is firmly cemented.

“My goal as an artist has always been to inspire people to make a positive impact through my music, to make you feel something, and last night I felt proud…of the legacy that has been built and that we’re building together as artists,” Usher said during his commencement speech. He also left the graduating class with encouraging words to take with them into the next chapters of their lives. “Keep running past that finish line [of your goals], break the barriers, identify that spark in you that motivates you to keep going, and don’t expect everything to be perfect and run smoothly,” he said. “Take what you’ve learned here [at Berklee], go into the world, and make great things.”

For the 44-year-old, it was a true moment of gratitude. “They call me D-o-c-t-o-r R-a-y-m-o-n-d. Thank you @berkleecollege for honoring me and presenting me with a Doctor of Music degree,” he captioned a photo of himself in academic dress. “I’m so grateful for this opportunity to share a message to the next generation of artists, producers, vocalists, arrangers, dancers and more. Be brave and I hope your spark never goes away.”

Usher’s My Way- The Vegas Residency picks back up in June, but in the meantime, the singer’s been busy delivering show-stopping performances at festivals across the country and celebrating major milestones for some of his most popular albums. While picking up his new title, Usher also marked the 15th anniversary of his fifth album, Here I Stand, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

Internet Relationship Expert Derrick Jaxn Honors Ex-Wife With Heartfelt Mother’s Day Post

Not all divorces end in turmoil, as some couples tend to have mutual respect. The highly controversial Derrick Jaxn’s marriage seems to be one of those examples so far.

Internet relationship guru Derrick Jaxn honored his ex-wife, Da’Naia, on Mother’s Day with a heartfelt message. Posted to Instagram, Jaxn honored her for her dedication to their three children although they are no longer together. “Thank you for showing up for them, even in times you struggled to show up for yourself,” Jaxn wrote.

“Mothers like you don’t get enough credit, but on today, I hope you feel as appreciated as you are.” He continued, saying, “Our children are blessed to have you in their lives and I will always honor you for the endless sacrifices you make for them.”

Many posted comments in support of Jaxn showing love. “I really like Danaia, I can tell she is a good woman. Happy Mother’s Day sweetheart,” one user wrote. “This was very honorable of you Derrick God bless,” another wrote.

Jaxn and his estranged wife have managed to stay out of the spotlight recently after he filed for divorce in December 2022. The former couple made an odd video that went viral as Jaxn admitted to being a serial cheater after seemingly being exposed by other women. Shortly after Jaxn filed, photos of him in Miami with another woman appeared. After the picture was posted, he announced he and Da’Naia had been separated for almost a year.

The father of three isn’t the only one adjusting to a new attitude post-divorce. The former Mrs. Jaxn appeared on social media, showing off a new, more relaxed look. Dr. Kia Moore tweeted, “She has found herself!”

She immediately gained praise from spectators and critics.

Memorial Plans Set Just One Year After Buffalo Supermarket Mass Shooting

Memorial Plans Set Just One Year After Buffalo Supermarket Mass Shooting

Moments of silence covered the city of Buffalo, New York, on May 14 as thousands gathered at the location of the mass shooting that shook the nation one year ago.

NBC News reports Buffalo made it through one year after a white supremacist gunman opened fire at a Tops Friendly Market, killing 10 people and injuring three more—because they were Black. To honor the victims, a memorial was held with moments of silence followed by church bell chimes at 2:28 p.m. To move forward, panelists of the community gathered last week to discuss how they can conquer racism and social media radicalization so things like this never happen again.

As the supermarket has since re-opened, memorial development has begun, according to Spectrum News. A water wall honoring the 10 victims is currently seen inside, but Buffalo Tops’ President, John Persons, says something needs to be done to make the space unrecognizable. “We as a company always knew that in the very beginning, the community used the corner of Jefferson Ave. and Landon as sort of a makeshift memorial spot,” Persons said. “It appeared to us that meant as the most permanent honorable space for the victims and to remember what happened that day.”

Tops said there has always been a plan in place to build a more permanent memorial in Buffalo where people can come, say a prayer, and show their support. Construction will begin next month.

Legislators have been supportive since the tragic day. Recently, President Joe Biden penned an op-ed for USA Today calling for Congress and state lawmakers to move on banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. He hopes to require background checks for all gun sales after his administration passed a landmark gun measure last June, shortly after a series of mass shootings. He reminisced on when he and first lady Jill Biden visited the site. “Jill and I visited both communities, spending hours with hundreds of family members who lost pieces of their soul and whose lives will never be the same,” Biden wrote.

“They had one message for all of us: Do something. For God’s sake, do something.”

The gunman, 19-year-old Payton Gendron, pleaded guilty to murder and terrorism charges. The judge overseeing the trial said Gendron deserved “no mercy” before sentencing him to life in prison without parole while the victim’s families were present.

Memphis Grizzlies Suspend Ja Morant After Another Alleged Gun Incident Caught on Video

The Memphis Grizzlies star player, Ja Morant, has allegedly repeated the same action that earned him an eight-game suspension during the NBA season.

According to ESPN, the NBA team has suspended Morant due to an Instagram post showing him flashing a gun. The 23-year-old player was suspended for a similar incident when he pulled out a gun on Instagram Live.

Although the playoffs are still in session, the teams who did not make the playoffs can still participate in team activities. However, the Memphis Grizzlies stated that Morant had been suspended from all team activities after the now-deleted video appeared on social media.

The NBA also released a statement about the alleged incident, saying

“We are aware of the social media post involving Ja Morant and are in the process of gathering more information,” NBA spokesperson Mike Bass said in a written statement.

The person in the car with Morant and who was seen driving the vehicle in the Instagram live video was Davonte Pack. He has been involved in several prior incidents that have caused controversy for the athlete, including punching a teenager in the head at a pickup game at Morant’s house last year. The young basketball prospect is suing Morant over the incident because the Grizzlies player is accused of going into his house and coming out with a gun in his waistband after the alleged incident.

Morant and Pack were also involved in a reported incident after playing the Indiana Pacers last year. The Indiana Pacers team members alleged that Morant or one of his associates shined a laser beam at them. After an investigation by the NBA, it was confirmed that a gun was present, but Morant wasn’t charged because there was no evidence to corroborate.

Another troubling incident occurred in March when the All-Star point guard was filmed at a Denver strip club waving a gun while shirtless after playing an NBA game against the Denver Nuggets.

Ron DeSantis Supports $1.5M Fundraiser For Homicide Suspect Who Unalived Jordan Neely In NYC Subway

An online fundraiser for 24-year-old Daniel Penny has been raking in donations.

As of Sunday, a fundraiser for the former Marine charged with second-degree murder for allegedly killing 30-year-old Jordan Neely in New York City has exceeded $1.5 million in donations.

According to Forbes, the fundraiser, hosted by the Raiser & Kenniff, P.C. law firm, was launched on the crowdfunding website GiveSendGo. “Funds are being raised to pay Mr. Penny’s legal fees incurred from any criminal charges filed and any future civil lawsuits that may arise, as well as expenses related to his defense,” the fundraiser’s description read.

As of Monday morning, the fundraiser totaled nearly $2 million in donations, with top donors sending in amounts from $1,000 to $20,000. According to the page, the remaining funds will be donated to a mental health advocacy program in New York City after covering Penny’s legal fees.

Camera footage caught Penny placing Neely in a chokehold for 15 minutes. The homeless Michael Jackson impersonator, whose family said he had a mental illness, allegedly boarded the NYC subway train making threats and claiming to be hungry. Neely was pronounced dead, and the New York Office of Chief Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide.

Penny was released on a $100,000 bond after he surrendered to police and was charged with manslaughter on Friday.

“He is a hero for coming forward to help,” an anonymous donor wrote on the fundraiser’s page, along with comments from other donors. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) and other Republicans have publicly supported Penny, sharing the fundraiser on their social media pages.

A fundraiser on behalf of Neely has been launched by an aunt who identified herself as Carolyn Neely. Funds will cover funeral costs for the late Michael Jackson impersonator. According to the GoFundMe, Neely has raised over $120,000 with donations from more than 3,000 supporters.

Nurse Sheds White Woman Tears In An Attempt To Steal A City Bike From A Black Man

Nurse Sheds White Woman Tears In An Attempt To Steal A City Bike From A Black Man

The infamous “Karen” persona that routinely shows up when white women feel their privilege should be afforded whenever confronting a person of color appears again in New York City. This regular occurrence doesn’t hold weight with “authorities” unless there is a video for evidence. Luckily, the latest incident was recorded for the world to see.

A video has gone viral with a white woman who appeared to try to steal a Citi bike that a young Black man paid for. As witnessed in the video clip, once he finished paying for the bike rental, the woman swooped in, tried to take the bike, and began screaming, “Help me!” In his refusal to give her the bike, she began to tell him that he was “hurting an unborn fetus” and proceeded to snatch the phone out of his hand, unprovoked. Following this incident, a white bystander approaches and sides with the woman without prior knowledge while the white woman begins to fake cry. The white bystander then suggests she take the bike next to her, resolving the incident.

After the video went viral, the internet erroneously identified the woman as Svetlana Fontaine. However, according to Sportskeeda, it was actually a white woman named Sarah Jane Comrie who works at Bellevue Hospital.

Comrie is a Weill Cornell Medical College graduate who studied to become a physician assistant and graduated from Brigham Young University in 2011. Bellevue Hospital also released a statement after the video clip went viral.

“We have recently become aware of an incident that occurred off campus over the weekend and appears to involve one of our employees. We are sorry this happened and we are reviewing the incident. NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue is committed to providing the highest quality of care to all New Yorkers with dignity, cultural sensitivity and compassion.”

This saga continues the tradition of the “Karen” persona attempting to take advantage of what’s been labeled “white privilege,” but now, with technology at our fingertips, we can instantly capture these moments as proof.

The ‘Nurse Power Network’ Helps Women Make Power Moves Beyond The Bedside

The ‘Nurse Power Network’ Helps Women Make Power Moves Beyond The Bedside

With National Nurses Month underway, the Nurse Power Network is in full effect, teaching, brunchin’, and making power moves beyond the bedside.

Women of color nurses comprise less than 20% of nurses in the healthcare industry. Many reports have highlighted factors, like racism, burnout, COVID-19-induced work conditions, and lack of work-life balance, that drive these women to set aside their personal and professional development.

Meisha Amia, R.N., and Dr. Nicole Thomas, R.N., licensed nursing leaders, community builders, co-founders, and co-CEOs of The Nurse Power Network, want to help these women take time for themselves. Whether you want to learn how to build and scale your brand or the fundamentals of public relations, this dynamite pair of nurse entrepreneurs are tapped in with empowering brunches, resources, and an intentional community.

They are launching the 5th annual Nurse Power Brunch: Essence Festival Edition this summer.

In celebration, BLACK ENTERPRISE spoke with Amia and Thomas for a conversation about their humble beginnings and passionate efforts.

Jojo Stylez of Captured by Jo

When did you discover your “Nurse Power?”

Amia: When I first began telling my story. I started as an online blogger and in public relations too. In doing so, I realized my power when tons of nurses were reaching out saying, ‘Oh my God, I’m inspired, I can’t believe you do so many things, and you’re a nurse.’ That did it for me, and that’s when I started community building because I wasn’t afraid to share my journey.

Thomas: I discovered my nurse power when I saw myself as a patient who used to be in bed at the Charity System Hospital. I grew up on Medicaid and didn’t have the best access. I remember having to sit in the ER with my mom for hours because I couldn’t get a doctor’s appointment. Many doctors did not take Medicaid or were on private pay, and we did not have private insurance. When I became a nurse, I was in a different role, and I knew then I had the power to change this.

What challenges did you face or witness in your positions that motivated you to build The Nurse Power Network?

Thomas: The challenge I faced was not seeing anyone that had really and truly done what I wanted to do before. That was one of the challenges because I didn’t really have a blueprint to follow. When I started to get into those executive nurse leadership positions, I realized that was another set of problems because I was often the youngest African American female holding this seat.

Amia: I felt boxed in. As a nurse, it is the social norm to be boxed in the hospital. But I needed more freedom and flexibility. That’s what made me dive into travel nursing and entrepreneurship. I published my first book seven years ago. I wanted to do it my way, and I didn’t want to be confined to the traditional picture of what a nurse looked like, and that’s important.

What impact does empowerment have on the nurses that you’ve helped?

Thomas: It’s really and truly helping nurses understand what elements they embody as individuals and how you can take that and leverage it to build.

Why is this year’s brunch relevant for Black women in today’s healthcare system?

Thomas: What makes it different this year is that, considering the state of healthcare. When we look at the numbers from the cutbacks, maternal health, and infant mortality in vulnerable Black and Brown communities and other factors, it will be nurses in attendance that will disrupt those systems and fix them.

Amia: I agree. This year is truly about understanding your value, and this is the year our nurses will recognize their power simply because of how healthcare has shifted.

Do you have any words of wisdom for our BE audience of nurses and entrepreneurs looking for empowerment?

Amia: Keep going regardless of what it looks like, and understand that the power isn’t being a nurse. Your power is in who you are as a person and who you are on the inside. Do not let your work title and accolades define your character. Your character has to be found within.

Thomas: If there was only one thing that the BE audience and nurses and entrepreneurs alike could do, network across all spectrums that you can.

Explainer-How Wall Street is Preparing for Possible US Debt Default

As talks over raising the U.S. government’s $31.4 trillion debt ceiling intensify, Wall Street banks and asset managers have begun preparing for fallout from a potential default.

The financial industry has prepared for such a crisis before, most recently in September 2021. But this time, the relatively short time frame for reaching a compromise has bankers on edge, said one senior industry official.

Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser said this debate on the debt ceiling is “more worrying” than previous ones. JPMorgan Chase & CO CEO Jamie Dimon said the bank is convening weekly meetings on the implications.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE U.S. DEFAULTED?

U.S. government bonds underpin the global financial system so it is difficult to fully gauge the damage a default would create, but executives expect massive volatility across equity, debt and other markets.

The ability to trade in and out of Treasury positions in the secondary market would be severely impaired.

Wall Street executives who have advised the Treasury’s debt operations warned that Treasury market dysfunction would quickly spread to the derivative, mortgage and commodity markets, as investors would question the validity of Treasuries widely used as collateral for securing trades and loans. Financial institutions could ask counterparties to replace the bonds affected by missed payments, said analysts.

Even a short breach of the debt limit could lead to a spike in interest rates, a plunge in equity prices, and covenant breaches in loan documentation and leverage agreements.

Short-term funding markets would likely freeze up as well, Moody’s Analytics said.

HOW ARE INSTITUTIONS PREPARING?

Banks, brokers and trading platforms are prepping for disruption to the Treasury market, as well as broader volatility.

This generally includes game-planning how payments on Treasury securities would be handled; how critical funding markets would react; ensuring sufficient technology, staffing capacity and cash to handle high trading volumes; and checking the potential impact on contracts with clients.

Big bond investors have cautioned that maintaining high levels of liquidity was important to withstand potential violent asset price moves, and to avoid having to sell at the worst possible time.

Bond trading platform Tradeweb said it was in discussions with clients, industry groups, and other market participants about contingency plans.

WHAT SCENARIOS ARE BEING CONSIDERED?

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), a leading industry group, has a playbook detailing how Treasury market stakeholders – the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Fixed Income Clearing Corporation (FICC), clearing banks, and Treasuries dealers – would communicate ahead of and during the days of potential missed Treasuries payments.

SIFMA has considered several scenarios. The more likely would see the Treasury buy time to pay back bondholders by announcing ahead of a payment that it would be rolling those maturing securities over, extending them one day at a time. That would allow the market to continue functioning but interest would likely not accrue for the delayed payment.

In the most disruptive scenario, the Treasury fails to pay both principal and coupon, and does not extend maturities. The unpaid bonds could no longer trade and would no longer be transferable on the Fedwire Securities Service, which is used to hold, transfer and settle Treasuries.

Each scenario would likely lead to significant operational problems and require manual daily adjustments in trading and settlement processes.

“It is difficult because this is unprecedented but all we’re trying to do is make sure we develop a plan with our members to help them navigate through what would be a disruptive situation,” said Rob Toomey, SIFMA’s managing director and associate general counsel for capital markets.

The Treasury Market Practices Group (TMPG) – an industry group sponsored by the New York Federal Reserve – also has a plan for trading in unpaid Treasuries, which it reviewed at the end of 2022, according to meeting minutes on its website dated Nov. 29. The New York Fed declined to comment further.

In addition, in past debt-ceiling standoffs – in 2011 and 2013 – Fed staff and policymakers developed a playbook that would likely provide a starting point, with the last and most sensitive step being to remove defaulted securities from the market altogether.

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, which owns FICC, said it was monitoring the situation and has modeled a variety of scenarios based on SIFMA’s playbook.

“We are also working with our industry partners, regulators and participants to ensure activities are coordinated,” it said.

Entrepreneur Who Secured $17M in Funds Launches Free Grant Writing Training

Linda Peavy, the owner and founder of LiPav Consulting, LLC, has pledged to offer free online grant training to 23,000 Black organizations. Her company has written grants and business development funding totaling over $17 million and believes that too many black organizations, especially for-profits, are leaving free money on the table.

COVID-19 and the George Floyd incident created unprecedented grant funds for black organizations. Due to COVID-19, thousands of small businesses were forced to lay off workers or shut their doors completely. According to a Forbes article, because of limited financial assets and the lack of accumulated wealth, Black small business owners were particularly vulnerable. Foundations and large corporations took notice and began creating free grant resources for Black-owned organizations.

The George Floyd incident also impacted funding. Numerous foundations and corporations began pledging funds to help address racial inequalities in America, particularly in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Peavy states, “More grant opportunities are available for black-owned organizations now than in the 15 years I have written grants. I want to help even the playing field by teaching black-owned businesses and black-led nonprofits to research, write, and win funding. I aim to provide free training to 23,000 black-owned organizations to educate them on funding availability and show them a pathway to greater financial stability using free grants.”

Many small organizations rely upon grants to survive but cannot afford to hire a professional grant writer. Therefore, Linda created the LiPav Writing Academy in 2019 to teach grant writing skills to businesses needing them most. Peavy shares that “millions of dollars in free grant funds are available to organizations whether they are a start-up, scaling, or operating with an all-volunteer staff. In 2021, giving from foundations reached over 90 billion dollars. Showing vision, strategy, and impact is critical.”

In addition to free training, Peavy offers products such as an in-depth grant writing course and the Million Dollar Grant Roadmap, her budget-friendly $5 resource outlining the exact steps she took to secure millions in grants.
