Keke Palmer Wants A MeToo Movement In The Music Industry; ‘Everybody’s A Crooked Cop’

Keke Palmer is opening up about the sexual harassment that plagues the music industry but has yet to become a part of the Me Too movement in Hollywood.

The Nope star released her new album, Big Boss, on Friday which includes a self-directed film that highlights Palmer’s journey in the music industry and the challenges and bouts of sexual harassment she experienced along the way.

Released on her KeyTV network, the visual album shares Palmer’s story of going from a child star to booked and busy actress, singer, and businesswoman. There’s a part of the film that tackles issues of misogyny and even shows a male artist who demands sex in exchange for musical collaborations.

They’re scenes the Scream Queens star saw necessary to include in the visual album after previously accusing Trey Songz of “sexual intimidation” back in 2017, Billboard reported.

“Those scenes are real. Those scenes are not actually inspired by that moment,” Palmer told People, referencing her encounter with Songz.

“Obviously, people know that moment and are aware of that scenario from when it happened and when I spoke about it. But that just goes to show, that was one of many moments where things go down in this industry.”

At the time, Palmer took to Twitter to call out Songz after she saw her likeness in his music video after she told him she didn’t want to be in it.

“This is the sexism and misogyny I refer to because if I was a dude, he wouldn’t have even tried me like this. Let this be a lesson to all, I’m not for the bullshit,” Palmer tweeted at the time. “I’m serious about my business and you will not use my likeness without MY permission. When you in front of a boss you treat them like one, like I treat YOU. NO MEANS NO!!!!!!!”

Now, reliving the encounter in her new visual album, Palmer likens it to just one of the many instances where she’s felt “sexually harassed” or “intimidated” in the music industry.

“Not always did I say something, but I said something in that particular situation because my likeness was being used, and I’m just a business person in that regard,” Palmer said. “But as far as being in an uncomfortable situation as a woman, where I’m either being sexually harassed, intimidated or just being made uncomfortable in a space that’s dominated mostly by men, those are very real people, and that’s a very real, accurate situation. And there are countless others.”

The silence that exists around encounters like the one she had with Songz and the “countless others” is why she would like to see a Me Too movement in the music industry like in the film world.

“It hasn’t happened in music, and it should,” Palmer declared. “Bad s— happens in all industries, obviously, but specifically entertainment.”

“We know bad things happen in all of them, but it’s almost like the acting world represents a union and the music industry represents non-union,” she continued. “It’s happening in the actor world but eventually, it’s going to come to a damn halt. Somebody’s going to get called out. Something’s going to happen.”

When it comes to the music industry, however, Palmer, thinks more people stay silent to remain well paid and in good standing with the guilty culprits.

“At some point, we’re going to come to some kind of understanding,” she added. “With music, it’s like everybody is being paid, and everybody’s a crooked cop. So, it seems like nothing will ever really come to a head.”

Black College World Series Hopes to Launch MLB Careers for HBCU Players

The MLB is working to bring more Black athletes to the field.

Baseball teams from historically Black colleges and universities gathered this month at Montgomery, Alabama’s Riverwalk Stadium for the Black College World Series.

According to the Associated Press, the tournament committed to giving dozens of HBCU athletes from NAIA and Division II schools an opportunity to compete for a title beyond their college leagues and gain exposure to Major League Baseball teams.

“We all have concerns about the fact that we don’t have as many African American players playing today,” Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith said, predicting the decline may be due to kids observing quicker success through the NBA and NFL.

This year’s MLB opening day roster featured no players from HBCUs and only 59 of the 945 players this season were Black U.S.-born players. No U.S.-born Black players took part in the World Series last year.

The Sports & Fitness Industry Association reported only 8.4% of Black children between the ages of six and 12 years old played baseball regularly.

“Representation is down, therefore not too many African Americans are following the sport,” LaMonte Wade, the only Black player on the San Francisco Giants, said. “Once you get into high school you kind of have to pick what sport you want to play. Most African Americans choose basketball or football. That’s mostly where our friends are playing, but if we can start them at a young age I think we can get the numbers up.”

It’s significant when young kids see players on the field that look like them, according to Jean Batrus, the executive director of the MLB and the MLB Players Association’s Youth Development Foundation. “… You’re more willing to play a game if you see a Black, African American coach, you see other kids playing.”

Thousands came out to watch the Black College World Series games, most being Black kids ranging from elementary school to high school.

Gabrielle Union Splits Bills 50/50 With Dwyane Wade, Feels Pressured To Work To Support All Of Her Family

Gabrielle Union-Wade is opening up about the financial pressures she feels despite her success in Hollywood and being married to a multi-millionaire NBA champion.

The Being Mary Jane star sat down with Bloomberg’s Idea Generation where, in a candid chat, she revealed she and Dwyane Wade split all of their house bills 50/50.

“It’s weird to say I’m head of household, because in this household we split everything 50/50,” she said.

“But in the other households each of us have to support, there’s always this gorilla on your back. And it’s hard. It’s hard to let that go.”

It’s the “other households” that she and Wade both support where Union-Wade, who has a net worth estimated at $40 million and a husband with a net worth of $170 million, feels pressure to keep working.

“There’s always like this gorilla on your back that’s like ‘you gotta work b*tch. B*tch you better work,”” Union-Wade shared in a clip captured by Black Millionaires. “‘Oh you gonna sleep in? Hmm, somebody might not eat.'”

It’s due to all the “responsibilities” Union-Wade has with the money that leads her to be a workaholic of sorts where she stresses over failed TV or film projects due to concerns about her finances.

“I think I just have more responsibilities for my money. So, I get nervous,” she said.

“‘Oh God, that movie didn’t open, what does that mean? Am I going to have enough to hold everybody up?’ I’m trying to find peace in the journey and not using my anxiety and scarcity mindset to be my engine, which is hard.”

There were some strong responses to Union’s revelation, with some suggesting the Wades might be living beyond their means and others who think the actress is throwing her husband under the bus.

“Maybe try live cheaper? that might work for wealthy people to live cheaper,” one Twitter user wrote.

“She always lowkey tryna make d wade look bad lol,” added someone else. “Wade got 50x what she got. Find it hard to believe he’s forcing her to pay half.”

Brittney Griner Plays in WNBA for First Time Since Russia Detention

Brittney Griner Plays in WNBA for First Time Since Russia Detention

Brittney Griner played with her Phoenix Mercury for the first time since 2021 on Friday, taking the court far sooner than she expected for their preseason game against the Los Angeles Sparks, after nearly 10 months of detention in Russia.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist was released from a Russian penal colony in a high-profile prisoner exchange with the United States late last year after she was arrested in February 2022 on drug charges.

“I didn’t think I would be sitting here. I didn’t think I would be playing basketball this quickly,” Griner told reporters after the Sparks handed them a 90-71 loss.

“I didn’t know how it was going to go, getting back into it. Grateful to be here, that’s for sure.”

Griner was greeted to roars of celebration at Phoenix’s Footprint Center on Friday as she exited the tunnel and strode onto the court.

The eight-time All-Star got on the board in the first minute with a two-point shot, and had 10 points with three rebounds across 17 minutes.

One of the most dominant forces in the Women’s National Basketball Association before her detention, Griner conceded she had plenty of work ahead to get back to her old self.

“I didn’t feel like I was gassed or dying,” said Griner, who offered a withering self-appraisal of her defensive performance. “(I’m) knocking off those cobwebs, getting rid of the bad habits.”

The two-time WNBA scoring champion has been subject to enormous media interest since her return to the United States, using her super-sized platform to champion the cause of other Americans detained abroad.

The 32-year-old, who is working on a memoir about her arrest and imprisonment, said the season ahead also offered an opportunity to focus on the game again.

“It feels good, you definitely feel appreciated,” said Griner. “But I can’t wait for the day where it’s kind of like just basketball.”

The Mercury open their regular season on the road in Los Angeles against the Sparks on May 19.

Byron Donalds Thinks Joe Biden Is Pushing Nation ‘Into Default’ Over The Raise of the Debt Ceiling

Byron Donalds Thinks Joe Biden Is Pushing Nation ‘Into Default’ Over The Raise of the Debt Ceiling

Republicans are continuously complaining about President Joe Biden’s plans—or lack thereof, in their opinion.

This time around, The Hill reports Florida’s Republican Rep. Byron Donalds feels Biden is “leading our nation into default” as his colleagues on Capitol Hill are at odds about raising the debt ceiling.

“If Joe Biden brings nothing to the table, if all he does is sit there with his hands in his pockets and not understanding what he has done and actually negotiate, then he is the one leading our nation into default,” Donalds said on Fox news Sunday. “It’s a very sad thing to see.”

For weeks, Biden and the Republican-controlled U.S. House have been negotiating raising America’s debt ceiling. The House voted to raise the debt ceiling in April, according to Florida Politics, but only by a limited amount.

A tweet from Biden said the plan will cut funds from necessary federal programs. “The last thing this country needs is a manufactured crisis,” he tweeted. “But MAGA Republicans are creating exactly that by holding America’s economy hostage—all to try to force cuts to veterans’ benefits, education, health care, and more.”

Time is running out as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has given politicians a deadline of June 1 to come up with a concrete plan. Republicans want Democrats to agree to spending cuts before raising the ceiling, however, the White House claims they have no interest in negotiating on those terms and insist that lawmakers issue and pass “clean” debt ceiling, no strings attached.

Donalds, a former financial advisor, feels the Republicans’ proposal is the best bet.

“You’re going to have to curtail spending,” Donalds told Fox News’ Shannon Bream  “Joe Biden wants to spend $7 trillion. That’s his budget.”

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky Celebrate Their Son’s First Birthday With Adorable Family Photos

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were in full parent mode to celebrate the first birthday of their son, RZA.

Rocky was ever the proud papa as he shared some intimate family photos of the adorable baby boy and his superstar mom in a cute Instagram post. “‘WU TANG IZ 4 DA CHUREN’ HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY TO MY 1st BORN . RZA,” he wrote, referring to the group whose member the couple decided to name their firstborn after.

The Daily Mail, which claimed it had obtained the child’s birth certificate and confirmed his name, was seemingly confirmed by both Rocky’s post and a subsequent video posted by a Rihanna fan page. In the video, the precious tot is clad in a Wu-Tang shirt, blowing out the candles on a cake made to look like money stacks. What would be more fitting for the kid of a billionaire pop star and a Harlem rap legend?

In the clip, the happy baby boy is seen dancing along to Stevie Wonder’s rendition of the Happy Birthday song while cameras flash around him—while wearing a stocking cap, of course.

RZA will soon be a big brother, as Rihanna announced she and Rocky are expecting their second child during her halftime performance at this year’s Super Bowl.

No word yet on whether RZA will have a brother or sister; however, rumors swirled that a girl may be in their future after Rihanna was seen buying a pink onesie during a recent shopping trip. The 35-year-old mogul recently celebrated five years of her lingerie brand Savage X Fenty with a bump-baring shoot that she shared on Instagram. “It’s giving call HR!! #5yearsofSAVAGEX”, she captioned the post.

Nicki Minaj’s Mother Teams With NYC Doctor To Provide Free Plastic Surgery For Domestic Abuse Survivors

Nicki Minaj’s Mother Teams With NYC Doctor To Provide Free Plastic Surgery For Domestic Abuse Survivors

Rapper Nicki Minaj’s mother announced her plans to partner with a popular New York City plastic surgeon to give domestic abuse survivors free plastic surgery.

Carol Maraj, 63, who herself was a victim of domestic abuse, has been running a foundation named in her honor since 2013, whose mission is to “help women escape domestic violence situations, empower them to once again see their human potential and rebuild their lives,” according to the official website. Now, Maraj is building on her organization’s commitment to helping women restore their confidence by offering free plastic surgery to reverse the damage left behind by their abusers.

At an NAACP-hosted Mother’s Day luncheon, Maraj and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Scott Blyer spoke on the importance of their collaborative efforts.

“So often, when [women] finally break free it is with scars, broken bones, and disfigurements,” Maraj said. “We will give these victims a new start that includes helping to restore their physical confidence.” Blyer spoke about his experience with survivors and the shame and distrust they often have of medical professionals. “A lot of women are embarrassed or ashamed or fearful to go to the hospital,” he explained. “We’re going to be donating our services, all of my surgical fees and so forth will be free of charge for anyone who has the courage to step away from a situation where they were involved with domestic violence.”

Maraj spoke candidly about the abuse she endured at the hands of her husband and Nicki Minaj’s father, Robert, in her 2020 memoir, Leaving My Pain. In one particularly disturbing story, Maraj detailed a frightening attack in which he dragged her from her car and proceeded to bludgeon her head and face, according to the New York Post. “After a while everything felt numb,” she wrote. “I felt blood running down my face, my nose was bleeding and I was in a state of shock from that many hits to my head.”

According to the New York Post, Maraj also announced that she’d be enlisting the help of Sammy Gonzalez of the Suffolk County Legislature and the Islip Chapter of the NAACP to get domestic abuse survivors surgical help.

Tiffany & Co. Announced As Official Jeweler of Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ World Tour

The small details behind Beyonce’s larger- than-life “Renaissance: Act I” world tour are starting to pour out.

Buro 247 reports Tiffany & Co. is the genius behind Queen Bey’s custom earpiece as the tour’s official jeweler. For 57 performances, Beyonce will wear an earpiece created with 4.5 carats of resplendent white diamonds as well as Tiffany HardWear and the beautiful Elsa Peretti collection. Photos of the stunning earpiece and jewels can be seen in a photo diary on the superstar’s website.

In a few photos, she is seen smiling with the piece in her ear. Another photo shows a Tiffany blue jewelry box with drawers.

Mrs. Carter has partnered with the luxurious jewelry company for a few years. She and her husband, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, released a vintage style marketing campaign for the brand in 2021 where Beyonce was featured as the fourth woman to wear Tiffany’s 128.54-carat yellow gem.

Last April, Beyoncé became the first person ever to wear the jeweler’s most expensive diamond necklace. According to People, the piece is called  “The Historic 1939 World’s Fair Necklace,” which was centered around the 80-carat Empire Diamond.

She wore the iconic piece to her Oscars afterparty along with a breathtaking barely-there Celia Kritharioti mesh gown.

The Carters have shared the Tiffany shine with their offspring, Blue Ivy. The then 9-year-old was featured with her parents in the the “About Love” campaign back in 2021. In the short film, Date Night, Beyoncé is seen in the back of a taxi while playing “He loves me… he loves me not” with a yellow daisy.

After picking up her husband, Blue appears on screen, chasing her parents’ taxi through the backdrop. The cab comes to a stop, and the couple’s oldest daughter crashes her parents’ party with glasses, braces, and a big smile on her face.

Black And Brown Employees Worry About Layoffs Far More Than White Workers

Black And Brown Employees Worry About Layoffs Far More Than White Workers

On May 2, the expert platform JustAnswer published a workplace survey that found that Black adults in the U.S. are more concerned with impending layoffs than white working adults, with 66% of Black employees and 55% of Hispanic employees expressing uncertainty about their future. This is a stark difference compared to white employees, of whom only 30% have shown concern.

The disproportion indicates a larger conversation around the workplace and layoffs, however. Findings from JustAnswer’s 2023 YouGov survey of over 1,000 adults revealed that Black employees were about twice as likely as their white counterparts to negotiate their payouts. This survey also discovered that, of the respondents, Black and Hispanic employees were more likely to pursue legal action if having experienced or witnessed something illegal at their workplace compared to white employees. Only 30% of white respondents have taken the legal route, as opposed to 58% of Black and Hispanic respondents.

JustAnswer employment law expert attorney Sheila Huggins has advice on managing workplace topics, specifically how best to manage severance pay negotiations.

“If you feel your severance offer is inadequate and your relationship with the company has remained positive, you may want to consider negotiating with your employer—but remember that there is a risk involved. Since there aren’t legal requirements to offer severance, your employer could technically decide to take back the original offer altogether,” says Huggins.

Achieving severance pay is not always a cut-and-dry process. Huggins says, “Keep in mind that when you do sign a severance agreement, you waive many of your employee rights in exchange for your severance package. For example, your contract could stipulate that you can’t work for certain employers in the near future, which could slow down your job hunt. These are usually referred to as non-compete clauses.”

While some states have banned the use of non-compete clauses in certain circumstances, in those that have not, individuals need to ensure that they are not signing away their rights to work jobs that align with their experiences and education. As layoffs within various industries approach, it is important as a worker to understand where you stand and what your rights are. For more inquiries and legal counsel, visit www.justanswer.com

Jonathan Majors Is Reportedly Dating Meagan Good

It looks like Jonathan Majors and Meagan Good are the new celebrity couple on the block, according to People.

After the duo was spotted in Los Angeles last weekend, rumors began to circulate that the pair had been spending a lot more time together. Good, 41 and Majors, 33, are in the middle of major transitional periods. Good recently divorced DeVon Franklin after nine years of marriage; the latter is facing some serious assault charges stemming from an incident with his ex-partner in late March.

It’s unclear how their paths crossed, but People did confirm the dating rumors.

Majors, who was slated to have quite the breakout year, and his legal team have been working overtime to prove the actor’s innocence. The Creed III star made a virtual appearance in Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City for a hearing earlier this week. His attorney, Priya Chaudhry, said that her team has provided the Manhattan District Attorney’s office with “irrefutable evidence” that the alleged victim in the March 25 incident that led to his arrest “is lying” about the facts of the case, according to People.

Good is in the middle of a career resurgence. Her hit Prime Video series Harlem was renewed for a third season and she’s in the superhero film, Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Good and Franklin have remained amicable post-divorce. Good told ESSENCE that though it was his idea to file for divorce, she holds no ill-will against him. “Once I accepted everything, I felt grateful for the time we had together and the beautiful journey,” she said.

Franklin doesn’t find peace in blaming his ex-wife for their issues. “With everything that I’ve been through, I found that it’s important to resist the temptation to place blame in relationships,” the 45-year-old motivational speaker and film producer said last year.
