16 States Sue Trump Administration Over Anti-Trans Ban On Gender-Affirming Care

President Donald Trump and his team threatened to issue subpoenas to providers, investigating them for fraud and pushing criminal prosecution, if they continued the treatment.

Several states — 16 to be exact — are standing with America’s trans youth by filing lawsuits against the Trump administration over the ban of gender-affirming care, Associated Press reports.

Attorneys general from 15 states, in addition to the District of Columbia, and the governor of Pennsylvania, issued the suit in early August 2025, claiming the current administration had unlawfully intimidated healthcare providers into stopping gender-affirming care for transgender youth with the ban. In July 2025, President Donald Trump and his team threatened to issue subpoenas to providers, investigating them for fraud and pushing criminal prosecution if they continued the treatment.

While there were states where care was permitted by law, eight major hospitals and systems in those states announced they were stopping or limiting the care that hundreds of trans youth depend on. In a statement, New York Attorney General Letitia James labeled Trump and his administration’s actions as “a cruel and targeted harassment campaign against providers who offer lawful, lifesaving care to children.”

“We will never stop fighting for the dignity, safety, and basic rights of the transgender community,” she continued, according to NPR

Filed in a Massachusetts federal court, the suit accuses the administration of trying to issue a de facto ban, a Latin term meaning “in fact” — a national ban on youth gender-affirming care, despite the absence of a federal statute that prohibits it. “The result is an atmosphere of fear and intimidation experienced by transgender individuals, their families and caregivers, and the medical professionals who seek only to provide necessary, lawful care to their patients,” the lawsuit read.

The fight against trans youth has been ongoing since 2021, while the former Biden-Harris administration was in the White House. Twenty-eight Republican-controlled states adopted policies banning or restricting gender-affirming care for minors, supported by the Supreme Court, which ruled that those states were in the right. The motion resulted in a domino effect of families of transgender children scrambling for treatment. The nation’s largest public provider of gender-affirming care for youth, the Center for Transyouth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, closed in July 2025.

Connecticut’s Children’s Medical Center announced “an increasingly complex and evolving landscape” for limiting care. Roughly seven other major hospitals and health systems, including Washington D.C.’s Children’s National, UChicago Medicine, and Yale New Haven Health, followed suit.

While using a law that labels female genital mutilation on anyone under 18 as a felony, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi says the law applies to specific types of gender-affirming surgery. However, the number of transgender minors having surgery is rare.

This is not the first time Trump and his team have been handed a lawsuit in the fight for care for trans youth. In February 2025, families of transgender youth filed PFLAG v. Trump, which is still ongoing. However, the administration doesn’t seem fazed by the suits. With more than 20 subpoenas sent to doctors and clinics involved in gender-affirming care, the White House celebrated the decision with a statement labeling it as a “barbaric, pseudoscientific practice.”

Native Son To Host ‘Save Ourselves’ Forum For Black Gay Men

Native Son presents the Black Gay Leadership Forum: Saving Ourselves to address the urgent issues facing Black gay and queer men.

Native Son presents the Black Gay Leadership Forum: Saving Ourselves, addressing the urgent health and social challenges facing Black gay and queer men.

Native Son is an organization founded by journalist and cultural strategist Emil Wilbekin. The forum is a space for open and honest dialogue and problem-solving, according to a press release. The implementation is timely as, at this moment in America, funding and other resources for the gay community are under attack. The gathering is part of Native Son’s ongoing mission to create safe spaces where Black queer voices are amplified. Additionally, the organization is seeking solutions that are driven by those most affected.

“Native Son was created to harness the power of Black gay and queer men to create change in our community and the world,” said Wilbekin in a press release. “The Black Gay Leadership Forum is a space where we can gather, strategize, and advocate for ourselves in ways that are affirming, empowering, and impactful.”

Central to this year’s program is a series of conversations on HIV awareness and treatment. HIV transmission and treatment are areas where disparities continue to harm Black men disproportionately. Native Son and Gilead Sciences, a global biopharmaceutical company, are partners in the quest to expand access to prevention and treatment resources.

“We believe that everyone deserves equitable access to health care,” said Alex Kalomparis, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at Gilead Sciences. “By working with organizations like Native Son, we can help break down barriers and address the stigma that too often prevents people from getting the care they need.”

Beyond HIV, the forum will also raise questions about other issues facing the gay population. These include concerns around mental health, wellness and leadership development. The goal of the discussions is to find both immediate interventions and long-term change. The program reflects Native Son’s position as a fierce advocate working for the betterment of the community.

Wilbekin spoke about his deeper mission when curating the summit and founding Native Son.

“At Native Son, our goal is not only to build visibility but to ensure that Black gay and queer men have the tools, networks, and resources they need to thrive.”

The Black Gay Leadership Forum: Saving Ourselves will take place in Atlanta on Aug. 29, bringing together activists, policymakers, health professionals, and community leaders. The one-day event will provide participants with an opportunity to engage in dialogue and strategy building. The event is open to the public with registration available through Native Son’s official website.

Issa Rae Sees Her ‘Impulsivity’ As ‘A Gift And A Curse’ After Almost Losing It All

Issa Rae reveals how her impulsive nature almost left her broke.

Issa Rae is providing examples of how her impulsive streak led to significant financial risks early in her ascent up the Hollywood ranks.

In her new essay collection, I Should Be Smarter by Now, released Aug. 26, Rae reflects on how her impulsive nature shaped both her successes and financial struggles early in her career. Among the six essays available on Amazon Original Stories, I Almost Know What I’m Doing details how her impulsiveness nearly left her bankrupt.

“My impulsivity, the character trait I’ve benefited from and paid dearly for, is both a gift and a curse,” Rae wrote, as captured by Us Weekly. “The gift is that I can be fearless in the pursuit of anything I want to achieve. If I want something, I’m going to be active and go after it. The curse is, of course, that I don’t properly think through the consequences of my actions.”

“Some creatives can’t get their projects off the ground because they overthink,” she added. “I’m an underthinker. The best example of this cost me every single dollar I had ever made in my life.”

In 2014, Rae was working full-time as a writer and had “a few web series” under her belt, she recalled. The Insecure creator was also in the process of writing a book, likely her 2015 memoir “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” which came with a substantial advance. It was at this time that a call from her business manager would shake her world thoroughly.

“I decided to be responsible and pay off all my debt,” Rae explained. “I was on the set of an independently produced comedy pilot called Words with Girls from a new writer I loved and believed in, when I got the call from my business manager.”

According to her manager, “every penny you’ve saved is about to be gone,” and Rae cites three major mistakes she made that almost led to her going broke.

Rae, along with her producing partner Deniese Davis, launched the independent production company ColorCreative. However, before securing any investor funding, they had already set a schedule, solicited scripts, and met with writers. While searching for investors, neither Rae nor Davis was “getting many bites,” she wrote.

“I was so excited about our undeniable idea and confident that we eventually would, so we proceeded anyway,” Rae explained. “We found some really great scripts that, to me, were filling a void in television.”

Mistake No. 2 came when Rae reached out to a “rich ex” for funding, and the third occurred when she “got into a fight with said ex a week before we were scheduled to shoot,” she wrote.

“The real mistake was not pulling the plug when I knew I didn’t have the money and that all of the costs would be falling on me. Let me tell you what I didn’t have in my bank account: $150,000,” Rae added. “I had about half of that because I had received part of the advance for my first book. Most of it was in my savings — it was all the money I had ever made in my life up until that point. Hence, the frantic call from my business manager.”

Yikes! Artificial Intelligence School To Open In Virginia

The Alpha School will open its doors as Northern Virginia’s first private school led by traditional artificial intelligence.

The Alpha School will open its doors as Northern Virginia’s first private school led by traditional artificial intelligence.

The new institution is scheduled to open this fall near Dulles International Airport. Students from K-3 will enroll at the price of $65,000 per year. The learning model is unconventional as there are no teachers present. Additionally, students are only required to attend two hours each day. Students will focus on their core subjects via adaptive software. Difficulty and mastery will be assessed using AI. Although there are no teachers, students will have access to “guides” who can help troubleshoot problems, The Washington Post reported.

Alpha Co-Founder MacKenzie Price believes, “kids do not need to sit in class all day doing academics.”

Price says her AI system adjusts to each child’s pace and capability. For those who believe that school has become too political, Price emphasized that AI programs avoid including political content in their lesson plans.

Billionaire investor Bill Ackman champions the program. He has become an Alpha ambassador, though he holds no financial stake.

Ackman praised the model as “the first truly breakthrough innovation in K-12 education,” while affirming that it keeps classrooms free of discussions around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

While the erasure of DEI is a boon for some, critics are raising alarms. Stanford education researcher Victor Lee warned that highly curated student bodies, typically from a higher socioeconomic status with access to more resources, may limit the applicability of AI models like Alpha’s. Plus, the long-term impact of minimizing human interaction remains unknown.

Virginia’s state education leaders are also taking caution when evaluating the inclusion of AI in the classroom. Trained educators have attended AI workshops to gain a better understanding of the technology’s application. Additionally, guidelines are being shaped to ensure the technology serves as a support tool and does not replace teacher-led learning.

Still, for families like former Gov. Ricardo Rosselló’s, whose children participated in a “shadow day” at the school, the model holds appeal. Rosselló described the school’s mix of flexible academics and purposeful skills as “really, really compelling and powerful.”

For Price, Virginia’s new campus is only one step in a much larger vision. Her company already teaches about 300 students across three sites in Austin and Brownsville, Texas, as well as Miami. Beyond those classrooms, the Alpha model is being tested in smaller micro-school settings.

Price has also been making her case in Washington. Earlier this year, she met with Michael Kratsios, the head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, to review Alpha’s AI curriculum. This comes after Trump signed an executive order outlining plans to integrate AI into K-12 education nationwide.

InvestFest Exclusive: Tabitha Brown On Building With Purpose And Protecting Your Peace

Tabitha Brown’s words underscored the importance of resilience

At InvestFest 2025 in Atlanta, thousands gathered at the Georgia World Congress Center to hear voices shaping culture, commerce, and community. On the Eaern Your Leisure stage, Aug. 23, the panel “Brick By Brick: The Blueprint of Empire-Building” brought together Valerie Obaze, Fawn Weaver, and Tabitha Brown in conversation with Selena Hill about what it means to build with purpose.

Choosing Partnerships That Align

For creators looking to attract brand partnerships and sponsorships, Brown advised focusing on organic collaborations by centering content around the products and brands they truly use.

“In the beginning, I would post and just tag, so they would know, ‘Oh, I’m using this product,’” she explained. “That way, they could potentially see me as a partner. But the main thing is knowing if they’re in alignment with how you live your life.”

One of the most common pitfalls, she noted, is jumping into partnerships too quickly. “We don’t want to just partner with anybody, just to be partnering. We don’t want to do anything just to make money. We want it to be meaningful and aligned with how we live.”

Brown stressed the importance of reading the fine print. “Exclusivity and perpetuity are the two big things I tell people to look out for in contracts. If you see that—RUN! Because that means they can use your likeness and image for as long as they want to. I’ve helped so many content creators who got locked into deals, didn’t have an attorney, and now they’re stuck,” she said. “All because they were so excited to make a couple thousand dollars.”

Thriving Amid The DEI Backlash

Brown spoke on the rollback of corporate DEI commitments. The brand entrepreneur has navigated partnerships with companies like Target and remains steadfast even as some major retailers continue to scale back investments in Black-owned businesses.

“Before there was DEI, we were just great people doing great business,” Brown told BE. “Remember, you still are great people, Black people, doing great Black business. And if, you know, we got this crazy person in the White House and Lord knows, honey, the way he’s trying to erase our history, don’t allow it to erase your drive, your hustle, your motivation. Keep pushing forward and just keep doing the work every day.”

Her words underscored the importance of resilience, a theme echoed across multiple stages at InvestFest.

Tools Every Entrepreneur Should Know

When asked what financial literacy tools she wishes she had known more about early on, Brown pointed to Shopify and QuickBooks.

“When I first started doing e-commerce, Shopify and QuickBooks were the first two things I was trying to learn,” Brown recalled. “Even now, because they keep expanding and updating, I think everybody should know QuickBooks, because we have to check the balances and make sure. And if you’re doing products, Shopify—because you always want to check your inventory, your sales, and your data.

Finding Joy In The Community

When asked what she enjoyed most about InvestFest 2025, Brown’s answer was immediate: the people.

“I love the people,” she said. “I love to connect. I love to see so many Black people in here who are inspired, who are motivated. They’re hungry and they want more out of life.”

It’s that hunger, combined with Brown’s message of leading with authenticity, guarding your peace, and building brick by brick, that makes her a guiding voice for a generation of entrepreneurs determined to create wealth with purpose.

Jasmine Crockett, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Bleach blond bad built butch body

Marjorie Taylor Greene Keeps Jasmine Crockett’s Name In Her Mouth Claiming She Doesn’t Understand ‘The Black Struggle’

Those that live the Black experience know that each one is different however, the one struggle all Black Americans can relate to is the constant racism from police, the White House and just everyday people.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) must be a favorite topic for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) since, during an interview with Megyn Kelly, she attacked her colleague about her appearance and pushed a narrative that Crockett does not understand “the Black American struggle.”

Taylor Greene is receiving backlash on social media for the viral clip where the host of “The Megyn Kelly Show” opened the floor for MTG to attack Crockett’s appearance and character, referring to her as “a nightmare.” Given the opportunity, the MAGA loyalist ripped into the Democratic leader, calling her a fake since her background doesn’t correlate to the struggles of Black Americans. “She claims to be, you know, from her people. She puts on this image that she understands the Black American struggle. But let’s face it, the girl went to private school, she went on to … I don’t know what college … and law school — she’s a complete fake,” Taylor Greene said.

“She’s as fake as her eyelashes, she’s as fake as her hair, she’s as fake as her fingernails, and she is such a massive fraud.”

Other topics included the viral spat between Taylor Greene and Crockett, where Crockett was able to cash in on her response to the conservative lawmaker’s eyelash comment, saying she has a “bleach blonde bad built butch body,” comedically confusing committee leaders.

Those who live the Black experience know that each one is different; however, the one struggle all Black Americans can relate to is the constant racism from police, the White House, and just everyday people. Crockett seemingly caught wind of her GOP colleague’s comment, calling Taylor Greene and Kelly “a joke.”

“It is funny that MAGA cultist want to challenge my blackness because of my education… Remember how they challenged Barack Obama & his roots? Remember how they claimed Kamala “turned” black?,” she wrote on X.

“Y’all are a joke. Walk a day in my shoes where your white supremacist friends send me hateful emails, death threats, DMs, & posts, and then you can tell me if I’m truly living the black experience in this country. Until then, mind your business. ALSO “being black” has nothing to do with education… (BUT for the record, if it did, know that the MOST educated demographic in THIS country is BLACK WOMEN, so stop pretending like we are inferior in ANY WAY!)”

Both Black and white social media users jumped in to defend the outspoken congresswoman, saying she doesn’t have to explain anything. “You don’t have to prove shit to a bunch of mediocre racists, Queen,” @taradublinrocks wrote.

Journalist Jemele Hill summarized Taylor Greene’s comments as white people not having a clue about what and who Black people are. “The problem is that some white people have a narrow idea of who and what Black people are. They don’t possess the depth or nuance to understand the spectrum and range of Black people,” Hill wrote.

“They associate being educated with not really being Black, which often exposes how little they think of Black people to begin with.”

Kelly has already sustained the consequences of letting the names of Black people fly freely out of her mouth. In early 2025, journalist Don Lemon respectfully told the canceled Fox News anchor to “go f‑‑‑ yourself” after celebrating the cancellation of Joy Reid’s MSNBC show.

Trump Signs Order To End Cashless Bail Despite No Link Between Policy Changes Increasing Crime

Donald Trump wants to end cashless bail nationwide, threatening to withhold federal funding from states that allow the practice.

Donald Trump’s latest executive order targets cashless bail nationwide, threatening to cut federal funding from districts that maintain such policies.

On Aug. 25, Trump signed an executive order to withhold federal grant funding from jurisdictions with cashless bail policies, The New York Times reports. The order also directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to provide Trump, within 30 days, a list of states and localities that have “substantially eliminated cash bail,” putting those that fail to do so at risk of losing federal funding.

Trump has long opposed cashless bail, a system that allows defendants facing lesser charges to avoid posting bail. He and other conservative lawmakers argue it endangers public safety by putting more accused offenders back on the streets. However, studies show these policies have not led to higher crime rates.

“Somebody kills somebody, they go and don’t worry about it,” Trump told reporters while signing the order. “No cash. Come back in a couple of months. We’ll give you a trial. You never see the person again.”

The order also calls to move applicable criminal defendants in Washington, D.C., to federal custody to ensure they’ll be held in federal prison pretrial.

“Our great law enforcement officers risk their lives to arrest potentially violent criminals, only to be forced to arrest the same individuals, sometimes for the same crimes, while they await trial on the previous charges,” the executive order reads. “This is a waste of public resources and a threat to public safety.”

The move comes as Trump deploys the military across Washington, D.C., in what he calls a crackdown on crime, while threatening to extend the strategy to Illinois, New York, and Maryland next.

“That was when the big crime in this country started,” Trump said on Monday. “They kill people, and they get out – cashless bail,” he added. “They thought it was discriminatory to make people put up money because they just killed three people lying on a street.”

Supporters of cashless bail argue the traditional system is unfair, allowing wealthy defendants to buy their pretrial freedom while poorer individuals remain jailed as their cases proceed. They argue courts should base release decisions on whether someone poses a threat to the community, not on their ability to pay.

New Mexico essentially ended cash bail in 2016, followed by New Jersey in 2017 and Alaska in 2018. New York’s bail reform took effect in early 2020, and Illinois implemented its law in 2023. In place of cash bail, the new systems rely on less restrictive measures to ensure defendants return to court, including supervised release, electronic monitoring, and connections to pretrial services.

Trump himself has directly benefited from bail reforms. Following his 2023 arraignment in New York on charges of falsifying business records, he was released on his own recognizance without having to pay cash bail. He received the same treatment in his two federal criminal cases, one in Washington, D.C., and the other in Florida. However, in Fulton County, Georgia, where he faced charges tied to efforts to overturn the 2020 election, he was required to post a $200,000 bond, paying 10% out of pocket and relying on a bail bonds company for the remainder.

Pepsi National Battle Of The Bands Brought 8 Of The Best HBCU Marching Bands To Texas

The National Battle of the Bands also announced that it honored Dr. Julian E. White, longtime Director of Bands at Florida A&M University

This past weekend, marching band and HBCU fans had the opportunity to view some of their favorite schools participating in the annual Pepsi National Battle of the Bands, which took place from Aug. 22 to 24 at NRG Stadium.

According to WFMY, the schools participating in this year’s showcase of college marching bands included North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Alabama A&M University, Albany State University, Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, Langston University, Prairie View A&M University, and Texas Southern University.

The annual event takes place every year to showcase the talents of the chosen schools’ marching bands.

https://twitter.com/NationalBOTB/status/1959984995034136897

This year’s theme was “Beyond the Notes | Music Is the Culture,” according to a press release from the National Battle of the Bands. It honors both the performances on the field and the impact of HBCUs (historically Black colleges and universities) in shaping communities, culture, and leadership.

Click 2 Houston spoke to one of the school’s band directors, Roderick Little, who mentioned that his university, Jackson State, received $50,000 in scholarships to participate in the event.

“That goes a long way with helping our students get through school when they have financial woes,” Little told the media outlet.

TSU’s drum major Kamron Hadnot commented on the togetherness the event brings, as it also sheds a positive light on the HBCU culture.

“Events like this allow HBCU culture to be seen in a more positive light than how it’s sometimes portrayed. It brings us together as a community to put on a great show,” said the student.

The Pepsi National Battle of the Bands also announced that it honored Dr. Julian E. White, longtime Director of Bands at Florida A&M University. He was inducted into the NBOTB Hall of Fame over the weekend as well. He becomes only the second person to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, following the induction of Maestro Benjamin J. Butler, II of Texas Southern University last year.

NOT PRESSED: Deion Sanders On Shilo’s Tampa Bay Release, ‘He’s Gonnna Be Straight’

'Shilo's a man of many talents'

After being cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Shilo Sanders will be good, according to his NFL Hall of Fame father and football coach, Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders, as he assures the media that there are plans in place if he does not get on another NFL team.

At a recent press conference, Coach Prime addressed Shilo’s release, which occurred shortly before NFL teams were required to reduce their roster size to 53 players. Although the Buccaneers were impressed with Shilo’s abilities, he was released after getting into a fight in his last preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 23. This seemingly was the reason, as Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles alluded to the fight during the game when discussing the newly cut athlete.

Coach Prime told the media that he has spoken to his son and that, although he is currently a free agent without a team, he will be good. But he is definitely hoping Shilo gets another chance with another franchise.

“Oh, most definitely [I’ve talked to him],” Sanders said. “He’s my son. I’m proud of my kids, all of them. And I prepared my kids for any and everything that could possibly happen in life and in sports. That’s part of fathering, that’s part of parenting, that’s part of having a relationship. So he is mentally where he needs to be, physically where he needs to be. We’re praying that he gets another opportunity to go with a team, but if he doesn’t, the plans have already been put forward to what he’s going to do next.”

The Colorado Buffaloes head coach assured everyone that even if Shilo is not given another opportunity, he’s “gonna be straight” as his son is a “man of many talents.” So, no concern whether Shilo will be down for some time.

“Shilo’s a man of many talents. I don’t know if you guys know, he’s a man of many talents. He’s gonna be straight. All the Sanders are gonna be straight, with or without football. You better believe that.”
