Black Businesses Call Out Structural Barriers That Blocked Federal Contract Work Before Trump

Black-owned businesses are calling for real solutions to securing equity in federal contract work.

President Donald Trump has returned to the White House with a clear agenda to dismantle DEI initiatives. While this may seem like a setback for Black-owned businesses, many had already faced challenges securing federal contracts under the Biden administration.

While some minority-owned firms may have gained from DEI programs and initiatives, these efforts fell short of addressing the deeper systemic barriers that continue to hinder many Black-owned businesses.

“DEI isn’t for us,” Casey Cooper, owner of a Black-woman-owned long-haul trucking company, told Reuters. “It looks good on paper, but that money doesn’t go to us anyway.”

When Trump set his sights on dismantling DEI initiatives across the federal government—including programs designed to help Black-owned firms secure federal contracts—Cooper remained unfazed. While some minority-owned businesses may have benefited from DEI efforts, these initiatives did not go far enough in addressing the deeper systemic barriers that continue to challenge many Black-owned enterprises.

“Many of these business owners feel disillusioned, betrayed, and deeply concerned about the future of their enterprises,” said Ken Harris, president and chief executive of the National Business League, a trade association for Black-owned businesses. “DEI policies, while far from perfect, provided a semblance of opportunity in an otherwise exclusionary system.”

Government data show that in 2023, small disadvantaged businesses received just over 12 percent of federal contract dollars while Black-owned businesses secured only a small portion—1.61 percent. That share shrank in 2024, with Black-owned firms receiving only 1.54 percent of the $637 billion allocated for small business-eligible federal contracting. In both years, the majority of federal contracts overwhelmingly went to large corporations.

According to interviews with 10 experts in DEI, government contracting, public policy, and advocacy, the Trump administration’s rollback of DEI initiatives now threatens to undermine the limited progress made under the Biden administration in increasing Black-owned businesses’ participation in federal contracting.

“People want you to believe that, oh, the government got this big minority business program to give Blacks this multitude of contracts,” said Wendell Stemley, the owner of Black IPO Construction Management in San Diego and president of the National Association of Minority Contractors. “That’s just not the way it works.”

Stemley has requested a meeting with Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, whose department oversees contracting for infrastructure projects, and is seeking a meeting with Trump. His goal is to tackle the lack of contracting opportunities for Black and minority business owners, labeling it a “bipartisan failure.”

The NAMC president aims to highlight the need for better workforce training for minorities, enabling them to secure contract work with vendors committed to dismantling the exclusive networks that shut out smaller, minority-owned businesses. Leaders of other minority-focused trade associations are also considering legal challenges to the Trump administration’s orders.

Legal advisers are being commissioned to consult with members and are planning to meet with lawmakers to advocate for the continuation of diversity initiatives.

“If you take away the little bit of progress that we’ve gotten over the years, that’s not fair,” said Drexel Johnson, a Black general engineering contractor with the state of California.

Kamala Harris Joins Former Boss Joe Biden At Creative Artists Agency

Next stop: Hollywood!

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is capitalizing on her political downtime, signing a deal with top Hollywood talent agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA), The Hill reports.

The signing marks her first post-White House move since handing over the reins to JD Vance.

In a statement, the talent agency, which worked with Harris when she was a California senator, said it will work with the former prosecutor “in all areas, focusing on speaking engagements and publishing.”

Harris joins the Los Angeles-based agency’s robust portfolio of politically cool kids, including former President Joe Biden, who announced his deal earlier this month, and Barack and Michelle Obama. CAA’s roster also includes former Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke and Harris supporters such as Beyoncé and Trevor Noah, according to Newsweek

Harris has mostly avoided the spotlight since her presidential run ended in November 2024. However, while attending the Broadway production of A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical, Harris took some time to make a speech to the cast and crew.

“Where there’s a vacancy, let’s fill it. Let us know that the reality is that the progress of our nation has been about the expansion of rights, not the restriction of rights,” Harris said. “We’re seeing a U-turn right now. For those rights to be maintained, which means we have to be vigilant. It’s just the nature of it.”

Harris has been pressed about her post-White House moves, even during her visit to the devastating LA wildfires. A survey conducted by Emerson College Polling/Inside California Politics/The Hill, showed her as a promising frontrunner if she decides to run in 2026.

When a spectator asked her about running for governor of California, Harris stayed on the now.

“I have been home for two weeks and three days,” she said. “My plans are to be in touch with my community, to be in touch with the leaders, and figure out what I can do to support them.”

Black-Owned Birding Company Offers Multi-Day American Bird Expedition

Beija Flor Travel is launching a birding expedition in New York.

Beija Flor Travel Inc., a Black-owned bird tour company, is launching a multi-day American expedition set for May 2025 in New York.

The company is promoting the tour as a “cultural bird expedition” designed to engage the Black community in birdwatching. Experienced birders will enjoy the rare bird viewing. Still, the company’s primary goal is to nurture the growing interest in birding among Black individuals. The focus is beginners and casual birdwatchers, according to the company’s website.

The initiative is tapping into an underexplored market in the birding industry. A study by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service found that only 9,315 birders identify as Black.

These statistics highlight a significant opportunity to broaden participation in the pastime. The birding industry generates billions of dollars in revenue, and local economies benefit from tourism.

The same study revealed that birders spent an estimated $14 billion on trips and $93 billion on equipment in 2022. Consequently, trip expenditures are a boon for local economies. Nearly half of the trip expenses are allocated to food and lodging. Thirty-six percent went to transportation, and the remaining 15 percent covered additional costs such as guide fees, user fees, and equipment rentals.

Beija Flor Travel Inc.’s upcoming expedition aims to provide a cultural and recreational experience, promoting diversity in the birding community. Birdwatching continues to grow in popularity. The company’s initiative could help spark increased interest among the Black community, creating new opportunities for participants and local businesses.

For international travelers, Beija Flor Travel offers expeditions in Dominica and Kenya. Kenyan tour participants will explore historically Important Bird Areas (IBAs) and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Washington Wachira will lead the tour.

Bertrand Jno Baptiste, aka “Dr. Birdy,” will lead the Dominican tour. Possible sightings include Imperial Amazon (or “Sisserou”), Red-necked Amazon (or “Jaco”), Blue-Headed Hummingbird, and Plumbeous Warblers.

Black Love Is Getting Spicy! BLK Releases ‘2025 State Of Black Singles’ Report

Black singles are unapologetic about expanding their sexual preferences and exploring a new era of dating.

Dating is looking a little different in the Black community these days.

With many Black singles embracing more modern experiences as they explore love, sex, and relationships, BLK’s inaugural “State of Black Singles 2025” report gives an in-depth and unfiltered overview of how dating patterns and preferences have emerged when it comes to Black love.

“We wanted to have a real conversation about what’s actually happening in Black dating culture—no fluff, no filters,” said Jonathan Kirkland, head of brand and marketing at BLK, the dating app for Black singles.

BLK gathered thousands of responses from Black singles nationwide. For those who opened up about embracing this bold new era of sexual exploration, a major non-negotiable for 88% of the pool of Black daters was oral sex.

“It’s a necessity,” a press release stated.

The report also revealed a significant openness to group play, with 70% of Black singles having experienced or expressing interest in participating in threesomes, swinger parties, or orgies.

Respondents were authentic about their preferences to enjoy and indulge in physical intimacy. Over half of the respondents expressed interest in hair pulling, 49% shared an interest in sex toys, and 48% revealed an interest in lingerie and fetish wear.

As the number-one dating app for Black singles, BLK’s report doesn’t go without noticing technology’s effect on the dating scene, and believe it or not, social media is shaping the narrative for Black love, with over 57% of respondents saying they have used platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat as dating tools.

If you’re still wondering if you should send that message, 17% of Black singles attested to social media being the perfect space to get the conversation going with an online crush.

Social-first dating is predicted to rise in 2025 with features like voice notes and video bios. For now, it seems like Black daters are taking Soulja Boy’s “Kiss Me Thru the Phone” lyrics to the next level and already using technology to their satisfaction. Nearly half of Black singles expressed that they were totally into phone sex and cam play, while 37% expressed interest in the form of connection. Many have even explored remote-controlled toys.

As the romance scene continues to heat up among Black singles, daters are still standing firm on their boundaries, especially when it comes to practicing safe sex.

“Sexual health remains a priority, with 84% of Black singles discussing STI/STD status before becoming intimate,” according to the report. Certain kinks like pet play and cuckolding were of little interest to respondents who shared their preferences for physical intimacy.

The debate surrounding traditional versus modern relationship norms remains in discussion for the Black community. A majority of Black singles still believe in finding “the one” and marriage is still the goal. Monogamy remains the preferred structure, as a majority of Gen Z respondents expressed open relationships as “too complicated.”

However, traditional gender roles are being ruled out in the new era of Black love. Opinions on parenthood found 83% of Gen Z interested in having children, 53% of Black singles unsure about becoming parents, and 71% open to raising children outside of the typical two-parent household.

According to a 2024 article published in the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, African American couples face greater levels of relationship distress than other racial groups. As the Black community continues to navigate romance and increased representation in dating culture, 2025 will see Black singles diving deeper into conversations centered on topics like relationship therapy, sexual health, consent, emotional vulnerability, and code-switching.

Romance may not be the priority for some at the moment, but dating apps like BLK and social media platforms are evolving into spaces for singles to form community and friendship-first relationships.

Chase To Block Zelle Social Media Transactions To Combat Fraudulent Payments

The policy starts March 23.

Chase Bank is updating a policy that would block Zelle transactions through social media while making an effort to cut down on scam transactions, Gizmodo reports.

The adjusted user policy is a result of the financial institution’s increased focus on transactions related to online purchases made through social media, whether it’s from an online marketplace or a trade connection on Reddit.

Starting March 23, if the Zelle recipient is “identified as originating from contact through social media,” Chase will decide whether to decline or block the payment from being completed.

Chase has faced a number of fraud-related claims due to social media transactions, claiming that 50% of all fraud claims filed by the company’s Zelle customers originated on social media. NatWest Bank found that social media marketplace scams are expanding at a rapid pace. Sixty percent of users between the ages of 18 and 24 have either experienced personal financial loss from online scams or know a victim.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) filed a lawsuit against Chase and competing institutions, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, accusing the companies, along with Zelle, of failing “to protect consumers from widespread fraud,” according to The Verge.

“Zelle is designed for sending money to others you know and trust, not for buying things on social media,” said Chase spokesperson Emma Eatman. “We’ve updated the language in our Terms and Conditions to help our customers protect themselves from scams that overwhelmingly originate from contact through social media platforms.”

Awareness over scam alerts has become heightened as agencies like CFPB are at risk of losing website information, social media channels, and employees given the sweeping cuts from the Trump administration and the Department of Government Efficiency, led by tech billionaire Elon Musk.

As Zelle has a “no refund” option, the company doesn’t offer purchase protection, meaning there is no way of getting your money due to a scam.

“Banks are working to stop scams where they originate, helping to prevent criminals from stealing money from hardworking consumers,” Zelle spokesperson Jane Khodos said in response to Chase’s policy change. She added that fighting scams needs a “multilayered approach,” alluding that more than one entity should step up.

Tamera Mowry’s Husband Lambasted For Post About SNAP Ban On Junk Food

Adam Housley is weighing in on SNAP benefits.

Adam Housley, the white husband of actress Tamera Mowry, is weighing in on restrictions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) on X.

On Feb. 19, Housley recounted his childhood experiences to draw a connection between his upbringing and the proposed policy changes.

The former FOX News journalist claims to have witnessed SNAP recipients abusing the system. As a 5-year-old, he recalls observing people filling their carts with sugary snacks and other unhealthy foods at a “neighborhood grocery store.” Then, according to Housley, customers use cash to buy alcohol. Housley expressed his 5-year-old frustrations in his post.

“As a kid who grew up in neighborhood grocery stores since I was 5, I can’t tell you how many times I saw people come in and buy crap food for their kids with food stamps, then open the wallet and use cash for liquor, beer, wine and cigarettes,” Housley wrote. “Then there were those who would repeatedly buy a lemon or lime, get the change, walk out the door, throw them away and do it again. Until they had enough change to buy cigarettes or alcohol. As a kid it pissed me off because there are some people who could really use the help and then there are these others working the system.”

Housley’s Upbringing

However, many social media users are questioning Housley’s claims, pointing out that he grew up in Napa Valley, a region famous for its vineyards.

According to NapaVintners, the area’s estimated economic impact is over $11.1 billion locally and nearly $34 billion across the U.S.

In a 2024 People magazine interview, Housley revealed that he retired from journalism to take over his family’s vineyard, adding credibility to the claims made on social media.

https://twitter.com/tsnmknd/status/1892203672966222264

RFK’s SNAP Statements

Housley’s childhood anecdote echoes recent statements by newly confirmed Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. regarding SNAP and school lunch programs.

“The federal government in many cases is paying for [SNAP and school lunches],” he said, adding, “And we shouldn’t be subsidizing people to eat poison,” the AP reported.

Similarly, the newly confirmed Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins agrees. Rollins expressed her concerns about how SNAP benefits are used.

“When a taxpayer is putting money into SNAP, are they OK with us using their tax dollars to feed really bad food and sugary drinks to children who perhaps need something more nutritious?” she said.

However, despite Rollins and Kennedy Jr.’s concerns, they do not have direct control over changing the conditions of the SNAP program.

Modifying how the benefits are allocated requires an act of Congress. Any potential reform must go through the political process, ensuring checks and balances are observed.

Anthony Edwards Tells Obama, ‘I’m The Truth,’ In Viral Video

The scene is captured in a new Netflix docuseries, "Court of Gold," which chronicles USA Basketball's Olympic road to the gold medal prize at the Paris Olympics

A recent clip that went viral shows Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards showing bravado about his game while speaking to former President of the United States Barack Obama at the Olympics in Paris.

According to Sports Illustrated, in a scene from the debut of a new Netflix docuseries titled, “Court of Gold,” which chronicles USA Basketball’s Olympic road to the gold medal prize at the Paris Olympics. In this clip, the former president is being filmed as he greets members of the Gold Medal-winning basketball team made up of NBA players like Anthony Davis (Dallas Mavericks), Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers), Kevin Durant (Phoenix Suns), and LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers).

One of the youngest on the team, Edwards is seen talking to the sports-loving Obama, who was known to be an avid basketball fan and player during his presidency.

During the exchange, Edwards, who is known for his confidence and trash-talking on the basketball court, does not hide that part of his personality when speaking to the former leader of the free world. As Obama chats with Embiid about Edwards’ game, the Timberwolves guard does not need a co-sign, and he responds with confidence to Obama’s question directed at the 76ers player.

Obama asked Embiid, “He can hoop a little bit, huh?”

Embiid gives Edwards props by telling Obama, “Just a little bit.”

But Edwards says, “Nah, y’all better stand down. I’m the truth.”

When James and Durant enter the frame, Obama questions them about the Timberwolves star.

When Obama turns to James, he informs the Lakers player that Edwards proclaimed himself the truth; James responds, “The truth? The whole truth and nothing but the truth. That’s what he said?”

Edwards lightly protests and explains the context of why he made that statement to Obama.

“Tell him the whole context of the situation, though. You (Obama) asked him (Embiid) what he thinks about this young man, and he said I’m OK. I said, ‘I’m the truth, you trippin.’ That’s what happened.”

After hearing the context, James and Durant stated that he “ain’t” lying.

Atlanta Falcons ‘BirdLady’ Indicted By DA Fani Willis

Atlanta Falcons ‘BirdLady’ Indicted By DA Fani Willis

The super fan is accused of collecting money with no intention of providing services.

Carolyn Freeman, the Atlanta Falcons superfan known as “BirdLady,” was indicted this week by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, according to Atlanta News First.

Freeman, 65, faces charges of “theft by deception” after allegedly stealing $14,155 from Kansas City Chiefs fans for a tailgate event that never occurred.

According to the Oct. 30, 2024, arrest warrant, Freeman obtained the money from about 300 fans to orchestrate a party for the Kansas City Chiefs-Atlanta Falcons game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sept. 22.

Fans believe that Freeman never intended to fulfill the service.

“I am glad the DA recognizes the severity of her actions. What she has done not only to our fan base but to others definitely shows repetitive intent to defraud,” Tammy Southwood, an organizer with the Kansas City Chiefs fan club, told Atlanta News First.

Southwood hopes her fan club can retrieve its funds. “I want her to be stopped,” she added, referring to Freeman. “No slaps on the wrist.”

The investigation into the BirdLady began after complaints mounted online. The indictment follows her November 3, 2024, arrest at the Falcons vs. Dallas Cowboys game.

Freeman, who gained national recognition as a 2016 Bud Light NFL Super Fan, had built trust with many fans nationwide. However, the allegations have raised concerns about her motives. The Birdlady claims she did attend the tailgate event but a detour caused her to be late. When she finally arrived, all the participants had left.

Following her arrest, Freeman denied the theft allegations. She maintained that her non-profit, BirdLady Cares LLC, was never involved in the transactions for the event.

On the contrary, according to Freeman, BirdLady LLC, a (501)(c)(3) non-profit did not receive its negotiated donation of event proceeds.

“I don’t need that money,” Freeman said. “I’ve never had a problem with money. I have money. My family has money.”

Freeman is scheduled to appear in court on April 29.
