Allyson Felix’s Next Feats: Working Motherhood, New Documentary, And Partnership With Danimals

The track-and-field legend and current entrepreneur talks about her new partnership with Danimals and her new documentary

Allyson Felix is used to a busy schedule. While the 11-time Olympic medalist has retired from track and field, she’s still making her own lane as a mother of two, entrepreneur, and maternity rights advocate.

Many are already familiar with Felix’s story, mainly her rise in Olympic glory to becoming a voice for pregnant athletes. Now, Felix’s advocacy is extending to her business ventures, building a female clientele in her talent management firm, Always Alpha, alongside her women-focused apparel line, Saysh.

She’s also powering the little Olympians of tomorrow through her new partnership with Danimals. As a former track and field star turned team mom, Felix is equipping her daughter and other young athletes with the foods they need to play strong, starting with nutritious snacks.

While Felix evens up the playing field for women’s sports, fans of the beloved runner can get a deeper scope of her journey in an upcoming documentary, ”She Runs the World,”  premiering at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival. From movie premieres to business meetings and tee-ball games, Felix is unstoppable in creating a better world for all athletes.

Felix, 39, talked with BLACK ENTERPRISE about how she juggles all her priorities with fueling up the next generation of athletes.

BLACK ENTERPRISE: Throughout your sports career, you’ve inspired multiple sectors of people, from Black women to mothers and athletes, no matter their age. Who do you hope to inspire next in this new era of your journey?

ALLYSON FELIX: I think it’s really just the next generation, you know. I hope they see that you can have an athletic career and motherhood, and then continue that with business ventures, and then be able to transition out of that as well. I’m really hopeful to be able to do that in the same way that so many people have done it for me.

Please tell us about this Danimals partnership and how it aligns with your mission to promote nutrition and wellness at an early age, especially as a mother and athlete.

It’s a really authentic partnership. It’s about being the snack hero and coming through for parents in a pinch. Every day, when I pick up my daughter from school, her first question always to me is, “Do you have a snack?” And so I feel really great that now I could hand her a Danimals smoothie and know that it’s packed with calcium and vitamin D, and just feel good that I’m giving her something nutritious. And it’s been a fun partnership. I got to surprise the LA Jets, a local track club here in Los Angeles, and be the snack hero, along with the parents.

Wow, to be so lucky to have Allyson Felix as the snack mom for your kid’s tee-ball team. Beyond that, you are the most decorated American track & field Olympian of all-time. Please share what your long-time fans can expect from your upcoming documentary.

I’m super-excited because it gives me a chance to tell my story and shed light on things I’m super-passionate about. And so I’m excited to share it with the world. It touches on everything from the Black maternal health crisis to my fight for maternal protections and also the work that I get to do now with my companies, Saysh and Always Alpha. I finally get to talk about a lot of those things.

Let’s take it back to mommy mode. You are a busy mom who continues to explore new pursuits while remaining true to your values. How is that shown with your children? Do you have any tips for working moms wanting to ensure the kids are alright?

My daughter is six now and she listens and gets it. I talk to her a lot about work. Like how I have to travel a lot, and about how important work ethic is, and the work that I get to do. And I think being really transparent around those things helps them understand because you’re going to have the mom guilt. I know that I do. I don’t want to miss anything. I want to be present, and I do my best to schedule those things and be examples to my team as well…And I think it’s great to do those things, but there are those moments that you’re not going to be able to, and I think it’s sharing why, and why you have a village. It’s knowing that it’s not just you that’s in this alone.

You already have your talent management firm with Always Alpha and also your women-centered apparel and footwear company, Saysh. How are these opportunities continuing to champion the causes you care about?

I just truly believe if you don’t see it in the world, then you need to create it. I get to show up for women holistically. Whether that’s creating products at Saysh, or being a representation for female athletes at Always Alpha. And then I continue to really advocate for women in the Black maternal mortality crisis. It’s something that is so devastating because so much of it is preventable, and so I’ll always continue to speak about that and work with other organizations around that.

What do you think we need to prioritize to even the playing field for women athletes, especially as women expect to outnumber male Olympians in 2026 and the LA 2028 games?

I think we need more visibility. I think we need more investment. We’re starting to see women’s sports have so much momentum, and there’s so many new players in the in the game now. But we need to make sure that it’s a true investment, not just here for this moment but deeply rooted throughout. We’re seeing more leagues pop up, and so it’s great to support there as well. And then just truly supporting athletes as brands, I think there’s a true opportunity to say, “Oh, we’re gonna have a long-term relationship, you know, and we’re gonna support through the ups-and-downs, whether that’s motherhood or mental health.” There’s so many struggles that athletes face because they’re just regular people, but ways to support as well. So I’m excited for where we’re at right now in women’s sports and the trajectory that is seeming to come.

To celebrate its Snack Hero program with Allyson Felix, Danimals is offering $15 worth of its nutrition-focused snacks, delivered through Instacart, starting May 1.

A Look At The Average Credit Scores and How To Raise Them

Nationwide, the average credit score as of 2024 is 717, which is one point lower than the previous year. However, there is a significant difference for Black Americans, who have an average credit score of 627.

If you have low credit scores, then it’s time to take the steps to raise them. Credit scores matter. The three-digit numbers, ranging from 300 to 850, determine our way of life. Without a good score, renting an apartment, buying a home or car, and securing employment could be jeopardized.

So, what’s considered a good credit score? According to FICO, scores of 670 and up are considered good. However, Americans usually need a higher score to qualify for low interest rates on new loans and credit cards.

Nationwide, the average credit score as of 2024 is 717, which is one point lower than the previous year, according to FICO. FICO stands for Fair Isaac Corporation. It’s a credit scoring model used by lenders to assess a borrower’s creditworthiness and predict their likelihood of repaying debts. According to Investopedia, the decrease was due to a rise in missed payments and more consumer debt.

Lenders and other financial institutions also use the VantageScore credit scoring model to assess a person’s creditworthiness. The three major credit bureaus developed VantageScore: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Like FICO scores, VantageScores range from 300 to 850. According to VantageScore, the average credit score was 702 in 2024.

However, there is a significant difference for Black Americans.

White and Hispanic communities had the highest median scores, while the Black and Native American communities had the lowest. The average score for Black Americans is 627, Investopedia reveals.

How Credit Scoring Works

One of the most significant impacts on an individual’s credit score is how regularly people pay their debts on time, which accounts for 35% of their score. The second is how much credit they have available and how much they currently use (also known as the credit utilization ratio), which accounts for 30%.

These two alone make up two-thirds of a person’s credit score.

The duration of accounts also matters, as does how many times a person has applied for new credit and a variety of accounts (think credit cards, loans, and mortgages).

Tips To Raise Credit Score

One of the first tips is getting copies of your credit report to ensure the information is correct. Experts recommend visiting AnnualCreditReport.com to get a free report from each of the three national credit reporting firms every year.

Paying off debt is another great way to raise your score. A financial expert told USA Today that Americans should only use 70% of the credit available to avoid indicating that they are overspending.

Another way to improve credit is to keep a mix of credit lines. You can do this by taking out a mortgage or car loan, but only if you have to.

Another way to boost your score is to keep your credit lines, even if you don’t use them. A lengthy credit history is essential, so do not close your credit lines.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson Encourages ‘Raw Courage’ From Judges Against Trump’s Judicial Attacks

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson sternly spoke out against the attacks on judges from President Donald Trump and his allies, saying they seem “designed to intimidate the judiciary,” NBC News reports.

Federal judges have pushed back against the Trump administration as it has failed to comply with court orders on key concerns such as foreign aid, federal spending, and government worker termination. However, the administration claims the opposite, stating they haven’t defied judges, while being openly critical of orders and judges that blocked their actions. “The attacks are not random. They seem designed to intimidate those of us who serve in this critical capacity,” Brown Jackson said at a judges’ conference in Puerto Rico.

“The threats and harassment are attacks on our democracy, on our system of government. And they ultimately risk undermining our Constitution and the rule of law.”

Without mentioning Trump or his MAGA allies by name, Brown Jackson, the first African American woman to be appointed to the high court, said she was addressing “the elephant in the room” and encouraged her judicial colleagues to have the “raw courage” to be outspoken without fear of retaliation. “I urge you to keep going, keep doing what is right for our country, and I do believe that history will vindicate your service,” the Biden appointee said, being met with a standing ovation, according to Politico

In early 2025, Chief Justice John Roberts pushed back on Trump after calling on U.S. District Judge James Boasberg to be impeached, calling him a “radical left lunatic” after ruling against his deportation orders. In a statement, Roberts described impeachment as not being an “appropriate response” to disagreements about court judgments. Allies like top domestic adviser Stephen Miller said statements such as the one from Roberts are power-hungry and said “communist” judges put the country at risk.

Elon Musk has also repeatedly called for judicial impeachments on X.

With the Supreme Court having a 6-3 conservative majority, the seemingly combative culture created by the Trump administration has raised concerns from some legal experts on the risks of a constitutional crisis. However, while expressing the loneliness that comes with speaking out, Brown Jackson highlighted how the country has been in this space before, using examples of attacks sustained during the Civil Rights Movement and the Watergate scandal.

She pressured her colleagues to draw inspiration from those examples. “I do know that loneliness. It is very stressful to have to decide difficult cases in the spotlight and under pressure. It can sometimes take raw courage to remain steadfast in doing what the law requires,” she said.

“Other judges have faced challenges like the ones we face today and have prevailed,” she said.

Pinky Cole’s Bar Vegan In Atlanta To Close

The closing is part of Pinky Cole's Slutty Vegan restructuring

Bar Vegan, the plant-based restaurant and cocktail bar founded by Pinky Cole, is will close its Atlanta location on May 5 after four years.

The closing is part of a broader restructuring effort within Cole’s business ventures, which includes the shuttering of Slutty Vegan branches in Duluth and on the campuses of Spelman College and Georgia Tech.

In an Instagram announcement, Bar Vegan stated, “This chapter may be closing, but the story doesn’t end there. Stay tuned;  there’s more coming to Atlanta this summer. Rumor has it, we may just be a part of it.”

Bar Vegan opened February 2021, taking over the space formerly occupied by The Mercury on the second floor of Ponce City Market in Atlanta’s Midtown district. The establishment quickly gained attention for its theatrical cocktails served in unconventional vessels like Ferris wheels and fire extinguishers. The restaurant also offered vegan meals such as Philly Cheesesteaks and eggrolls.

Despite its popularity, Bar Vegan faced challenges, including a 2022 lawsuit filed by a former employee alleging improper tip pooling and wage violations.

Cole also faced significant challenges in 2025 that led to the temporary loss of ownership of her business in February, due to financial difficulties, including a $10 million corporate overhead. She handed over control of the company as part of the restructuring process.

Cole reclaimed her company in March. She purchased it back under a new business entity, “Ain’t Nobody Coming To See You, Otis LLC,” a line from The Temptations biopic. Cole has plans to launch the “Slutty Vegan 2.0”

Bar Vegan has expanded to Lawrenceville, Georgia, where a location opened in July 2024.

The Notorious B.I.G. Apologized To Xscape On Night He Was Killed

Tiny said he apologized to the group for calling them ugly on one of his songs

When The Notorious B.I.G. was preparing his debut album, Ready to Die, he had a promotional song, “Just Playing (Dreams)” that dissed the members of the girl group, Xscape. One of the members of the group, Tiny, said that the Brooklyn rapper apologized for the diss moments before he was shot to death in Los Angeles.

According to a video clip circulating from the Morning Hustle Show, three members of the formerly four-member girl group appeared on the show and discussed Jermaine Dupri’s recent comment about promoting the group. He reportedly said that Xscape was one of the hardest groups to promote because people didn’t think the group, as a whole, was cute, although they were talented.

While talking about that, Kandi Burrus mentions that the group’s look was brought to light when The Notorious B.I.G. called them ugly on the “Just Playing” track. During the song, which details the industry women he wanted to be, let’s say, romantic with, he stated that he’d rather get with drag performer and reality TV maven, RuPaul, than “them ugly-ass Xscape b**ches.”

Kandi admitted that when word got to them that Biggie wanted to speak to them, she wasn’t trying to hear him due to the song. However, Tiny stated that she did go to talk to him, and he apologized to them for the line. Kandi regretted not speaking to him because, according to Tiny, “20, 30 minutes after” the conversation, the Brooklyn rapper was shot and later died.

When the group was approached about meeting the “Hypnotize” lyricist, Tiny recalled saying, “I’m going to see what he’s talking about. And you know, he was very nice, apologetic, and basically said, ‘I don’t know what I was thinking. Look, I’m ugly—I’m ugly as hell. Y’all is beautiful, and I just wanted to say I apologize.”

Trump Signs Executive Order Forcing Truck Drivers To Speak Proficient English

The order is a part of the Trump administration's efforts to make English the 'official language' of the United States

CBS News Miami reports that truck drivers who aren’t proficient in English risk losing their jobs after President Donald Trump’s latest executive order.

The latest mandate, signed April 28, requires truck drivers operating on U.S. highways to be able to read traffic signs and communicate with both law enforcement and safety officials. Under the order, “proficiency” is understanding road signage and interacting with agencies such as traffic safety departments, border patrol, and agricultural checkpoints.

The order will start to be enforced in 60 days. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) says drivers who don’t meet those expectations could be at risk of being pulled from the road.

But what does that mean for those who don’t meet that standard? Truckers’ opinions vary.

Russell Rocha, a 17-year driver, supports the rule, describing being unable to read a sign as “a little dangerous.” However, Yoman Rivera, a Miami-based trucker with 15 years of experience, calls the order “awful.”

“I never had an issue with English,” he said.

According to the USA Today network, the order is a part of the Trump administration’s efforts to make English the “official language” of the United States. However, with the trucking industry already facing a heightened demand with tariff wars brewing, the new rule could result in a slowdown.

For Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, the law is simply about putting truck drivers first and using logic.

“Federal law is clear, a driver who cannot sufficiently read or speak English—our national language—and understand road signs is unqualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle in America,” Duffy said. “This commonsense standard should never have been abandoned. This Department will always put America’s truck drivers first.”

Duffy justified the rule by saying there are data linking fatal crashes to drivers’ language barriers.

English proficiency is already a requirement for commercial truck drivers. It just directs the Transportation Secretary to enforce the law and review “state issuance of non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses to identify any irregularities,” guaranteeing “American drivers are validly licensed and qualified.”

The Trump administration claims the law was paused in 2016 after inspectors were instructed not to remove lawbreakers from service.

With job loss being a top risk under the executive order, Rivera predicted that “the consumer is the one who will suffer.”

Beyoncé Utilizes Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s Def Poetry Jam Performance On Cowboy Carter Tour

The Queen shows a video clip of the poem performed by the Newark politician before she starts her show

A poem written by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka appeared on the stages of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour.

The New Jersey mayor, who is preparing to run for governor, posted a video from a recent Beyoncé show that shows a poem he wrote and performed on Russell Simmons’ Best of Def Poetry Jam on HBO before entering politics. He titled his work “American Poem,” and the video clip is featured in the Dangerously in Love singer’s show before the singer comes on stage to start her performance.

The poem focuses on the impact of racism, injustice, and unequal treatment toward Black people and the underserved communities. He reminds us that the “American dream” has not been realized by many of us due to the complications we face daily in this country.

“I want to hear an American poem!”

“Hey, you! Hey, you! Where are all the American poems about Harlem numbers runners and barbershop conversations about Colored faces on colored TVs?”

“I am honored to be featured in the @Beyonce Cowboy Carter tour and grateful to share a vision in this American moment.”

NJ.com has reported that Baraka wants to become the first Black governor of “The Garden State.”

Others competing against him to become the governor include U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller, U.S. Rep Josh Gottheimer, and former State Senate President Steve Sweeney.

According to Politico, in a March 2025 poll, Mayor Baraka tops the Democrats running for office in the latest name recognition and favorability poll, according to a Fairleigh Dickinson University poll. In the race to succeed Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, Baraka came on top with the highest name recognition (78%) and favorability (43%) among 572 registered Democrats.
